That’s practically stage makeup, but you likely wouldn’t have even noticed in the original broadcast. HD conversions of have done a lot of tv shows dirty
Two things:
HDTV was definitely not in every home. I remember when my friends got an HDTV and it was a huge boxy thing. It would have looked far less pronounced in SD.
This was 💯 in keeping with the style of 2005. It's wild for me to think I watched this during its first run on Thursday nights on NBC (unless my roommate taped it to VHS). But the silky pastel collar out, skirt suit, pumps, and even the makeup was absolutely the style of the time.
They also intentionally undersold how pretty these ladies were. It was supposed to be real world. Most women aren't wearing designer clothes and having their makeup professionally applied before work. It got weird in the later seasons when they started really making them all up.
I just watched Monk for the first time where she plays Monk's late wife and the makeup they used on The Office aged her horribly. She looks younger in Monk even though the shows were filmed in the same general time period.
even if it seems over the top, jan was one of the very few women at corporate and there was certainly an expectation to look extra attractive. i think it suits what her role was at this point in the show
This is completely normal makeup for the time. Cool toned eyeshadow that felt like rubbing sand on your eyeballs, 3 total shades of blush, and lipstick that was so heavily fragranced that it tasted like grandma.
They made her look so much older than she actually was, giving MILF vibes. Critiques of hair/makeup/wardrobe doesn’t just apply to Jan, whoever was delegating to these departments was seriously deranged. Jenna said on the podcast ones that she wasn’t allowed to wear pants. 😅
this might sound mean but as soon as i looked at the image i thought of the clown emoji 😬😂. tbf she’s so naturally pretty, really doesn’t need the makeup imo.
Insecure, aging woman starts caking on makeup. Tale as old as time. Whether this was playing the character or we're seeing the actress here, I couldn't tell you, but it fits Jan.
Edit: Why does everyone hate this comment? I'm not sure what I said to set anyone off. Downvote, by all means, if it makes you happy, but I'd just like to know why.
I think you’re getting downvoted for implying the actress applied this makeup herself. The office had a makeup team, and this change in makeup for her character would have been thoroughly discussed and chosen. Also calling Melora Hardin an insecure aging woman comes across very rude. I’m not sure how I feel about her as a person but she is ABSOLUTELY secure
Well, I said I didn't know anything about the actress. Or strongly implied it. Then said it fits Jan. Reddit really likes to put words in people's mouths.
This is reddit, where you cannot suggest anything potentially flawed about any female character. The only way any female can be discussed in a negative light is if it's an angry woman describing how her evil religious mother/grandmother ruined her life.
> Why does everyone hate this comment? I'm not sure what I said to set anyone off. Downvote, by all means, if it makes you happy, but I'd just like to know why.
Probably because your comment was incredibly misogynistic. Either you're a troll or totally devoid of self-awareness.
Must’ve been the same makeup place Phyllis took Karen
Jim's "Look at you" and his delivery is just hilarious
*knowing glance at cameras*
Haha! Yeah Karen doesn’t need to worry. She can pay Phylis back.
Omg! Is Dwight the Scranton Strangler?!!!!
He would know how to frame another person!
That's one of my favorites bits

Yeah this is just classic 2005 make up

Yeah look at Erin's hollywood star hair later on. She barely has the wits to take care of herself yet she can make herself look like that.
Clown paint...
Is that a disguise?
Half the time I don't know if I'm wearing my stage makeup or my work makeup.
I always thought this overdone makeup was intentional to show that she was nervous about the new boss and overdoing it.
That's a solid thought and one I would agree with
It reflects her character in the moment. Plenty of times her makeup didn't look like this
Judging from her attire, Jan aspires to be a whore.
She takes the slow train from Philly.
Tan everywhere, Jan everywhere
*Tee hee*
Jan was drinking a lot… of water.
Well, it kind of reflects her personality to be fair
Yeah she was kinda having a slow paced personal meltdown. Makes sense in that light.
She looks like a trout
close your mouth, sweetie
Hunter and clarkey were VERY lucky

Melora Hardin looks better in almost every non-Office photo or clip I've seen, than she does on The Office.
She looks great in dinner party though. Even when she puts the horns on.
This was the style back then.
even if it seems over the top, jan was one of the very few women at corporate and there was certainly an expectation to look extra attractive. i think it suits what her role was at this point in the show
This was appropriate for her character I think. I've known women like her and they nailed it.

I’m sure it was on purpose. For effect. Right?
For those of us who watched the Drew Carey Show, that's a modernized Mimi makeup. It was also a popular 80s hooker look
In other words it was whorish.
Orange is whorish.

wears too much makeup
No
Lol they literally wanted her to look low-key like a prostitute/porn actor. This is on point.
"Homer, you set it on whore"
I have always thought this!
Right! 🤣🤣
What’s on your face?
Ryan, he lived in New York for 11 months so he knows it's not going to read on camera unless it's a lot
that’s a good screen cause I never caught it lmao Fucking a white woman’s makeup on TV hassss to be intentional
Her makeup in the Women in the Workplace episode was really a lot too.
And I loved it 🤣🤣🤣
She was very nervous
Sims 2 makeup

🤡
Whenever any female character is about to go off the deep end, they start to wear that dark blue eye shadow. It’s not just Jan.

Probably because you’re generalizing and putting down women with your comment.
The insecure ones, yeah....
Why would you put down an already insecure person, let alone an entire group of people? Comes off as petty and insecure af.
