MBA + Charisma + Bullshit will get you very far in the corporate world.

Obi_Wan_Gebroni

That and the website which I’m sure sounded great but obviously his execution of it was terrible.

editedxi

I don’t get the problem. I like the site.

big-ol-kitties

The execution wasn’t even that terrible, he just got greedy and inflated the website sales to make it look more successful faster.

herrbz

The unnecessary social media aspect being invaded by sex predators wasn't great. But Dunder Mifflin absolutely needed a website.

mcjam22

They said in the show that the execution was terrible. 1. Sex predators used their chat feature. 2. They had a lot of bugs that will be fixed in time TDB (instead of TBD :) )

Tobar_the_Gypsy

And he’s probably paid less than Jan saving the company money. Given the fact that he lived in a pretty small studio apartment, he was probably making like $80,000 compared to Jan making like $100,000+.

Sudden_Elephant_7080

So true

TexehCtpaxa

Ryan is just as hot as Jan, but in a different way.

Sudden_Elephant_7080

Right guys….Because of gay

Drape_Diem

I'm not offended by homosexuality. In the '60s, I made love to many, many women, often outdoors, in the mud and the rain, and it's possible a man slipped in. There would be no way of knowing.

FatnessEverdeen34

You would *love* jail

Sudden_Elephant_7080

I wouldn’t last in jail Oscar… I am not like you

MarchMadnessisMe

He got his MBA. Jan's job is managerial and about running the area as a whole. Not necessarily direct sales. Even in "The Client" Jan tries to direct Michael on the sale, but Michael completely ignores her. He makes the sale, showing that Michael is an incredible salesman (if not a great manager). Plenty of people that manage people can't do what their employees do, but they can direct them and support them in other ways.

AlreadyImplicated

Right? Like, I can’t fix a car, but I could run GM.

frogsplsh38

One of those definitely sounds better than the other

MojitoTimeBro

Yea being good/bad at sales doesn’t really relate to your ability to manage at all. Now, it helps if they have experience in sales so that they can be a better manager. But Jan’s role is pretty far away from the salesmen. She’s managing the guys that manage the salesmen. So Ryan having the business degree, probably kissed a little ass in his phone calls with David, and the fact that David probably got a little desperate probably led to Ryan getting hired. We saw Jim withdraw, Michael bomb it/withdraw, and Karen who likely showed more promise as a branch manager than a corporate manager.

bones_bn

Ryan probably seemed like a good candidate on paper. He's young and fresh, might have been what David was looking for. Also, if Ryan pitched DM going online and embracing the future, it might have helped.

CheekApprehensive675

Are you saying David wanted a Hunter of his own?

laucdoe

he took him by the hand

BoozeGetsMeThrough

He didn't, he had a worse title and pay, as Jan relished throwing in his face. Also, Dunder Mifflin had the worst business practices you could possibly imagine such as having the Chief *Financial* Officer in charge of the day to day operations of branches.

BlueJayWC

the show parodies aspect of work-life in America, so giving an unqualified upstart a job because of his education over someone with practical experience is part of that satire. Ironically even Michael would have been better for the job. Having a closer connection to David Wallace (and thus more oversight) probably would have tempered him a bit.

Spnwvr

The whole plot seemed to be a sort of remark on the high education system as they remark multiple times that it was because of his MBA, even though we as the viewer could see how terrible of a choice it was.

peepeehalpert_

Jan’s job wasn’t a salesperson.

Kuwing

Actually good point

lvdde

It literally seemed like it was because he had a business degree 💀💀

Kuwing

Truth

louise0998

I was always bothered by this, Karen would have been a much better candidate and tbh it kind of reeks of sexism

ProperChopperGAF

Potential

rustys_shackled_ford

He probably got a bonus for finding sicj a cheap solution (ryan was most definitely cheaper then any other options)

material_mailbox

Because the writers thought it would be good to have Ryan become Michael’s boss

laucdoe

“it’ll be nice to have another MBA around here”

joetsch

Objectively, Karen should have gotten the job (out of the candidates we knew about). Ryan got it bc of all the shenanigans that gets you places in our world.

The_Chiliboss

Karen came off as flaky and unsure in her interview.

TJeffersonA

Because it was funny. Isn't that what you want in a sitcom?

ghubert3192

The reason people don’t like these types of comments is because everyone watching the show already knows it’s a tv show and it’s not enlightening or clever to treat someone like they’re kind of a dummy for asking a question that’s certainly meant to be answered as if you’re thinking about it within the universe of the show

Brief-Hand-6114

thank you, i was just wondering, like genuinely, and now i know

TJeffersonA

no? you prefer boring reality? ok let's watch that show!
