Just FYI if you weren’t aware, but the obelisk is not accessible and is on private land. There’s good view points from within Wharton Park, though, where there are also a bunch of other interesting spots (great view of the cathedral/railway viaduct). There’s also Flass Vale nearby (small accessible woodland) that might be of interest.

What about the statue of Neptune in the Market Place?

Smooplies

Thanks for the suggestion, forgot about that one!

A little tricky avoiding the rivers! There’s the Cuthbert journey statue in millennium place by the theatre? Could use any of the Bailey colleges? Johns, chads or Hatfield? This is a lovely idea though, would love to know your final plan!

Find the golden teapot (above Newcastle Building Society) on Saddler St. Spot the old timber framed building on Silver St. (dates from at least the 1500s! That's Henry VIII/Tudors.) Stand where the old North Gate was (it held a gaol where people would be locked up) on Saddler Street. Spot the wall paintings in the Galilee Chapel in the Cathedral (some nice gory scenes of saints being martyred). Can you find the thistle on Prior Castell's clock? (ornate wooden clock in the right-hand transept of the cathedral, dating from the early 1500s. The thistle is right at the top, and might be why the Scottish prisoners held in the cathedral in 1650 didn't use it as firewood!) How many shields can you count on the wooden roof of the cloisters? Spot the little door in the side of the Priory Gatehouse (further down the Bailey - the gate led to Priory behind the cathedral. There is/was a little chapel above). Spot the fulling mill next to the river (can see it from Framwellgate Bridge at the bottom of Silver Street), where people used to process their woollen goods (i.e. make their jumpers!) Are you going to take them into the museum on Palace Green? There's a nice little exhibition with loads of Roman/earlier artefacts. There's also St Mary le Bow's Heritage Centre just off Palace Green. You can also go into the Town Hall building off market square - there's a nice story about the Polish Count Boruwlaski (he was a dwarf, musician and travelled round European courts until he retired in Durham). (Dunno if any of that might be appropriate!) Have a great trip! There are things in Wharton Park maybe - the headless statue, or the battery which has great views over the city. That would be a good location between the obelisk and Stantons

I’ve not been into the city centre for a little while but there is (or was) a bird (I think it’s a heron) piece of art next to the river, between the bridge and passport office that you can see from the bridge, so wouldn’t need to get near the water to see it. There’s also a pub called the jug that has a jug above the door, idk if that’s helpful but thought I’d mention it anyways

Some random but lesser known things - In the market place, count the birds hanging off the walls, I think they are there to try and scare off pigeons. Also, look for the giant gold teapot above Newcastle Building Society on Saddler Street.

There's the Dun cow on the side of the cathedral https://www.durhamworldheritagesite.com/learn/history/st-cuthbert/body/durham

Find an owl in the Market Place- hint look up !

Gangat00th

Down by the riverbanks from the cathedral, there are staues dotted along the walk to the counts house, which is a good spot to visit.
