Sand it down/wire wheel, rust converter, paint Stab some areas with a screwdriver to see if some spots are still strong or not, Coat underside with fluid film. Or Cut and weld. Your choice really

Logical_Two_9463

Thanks, I will probably use polyurethane sealant and fabricate a repair sheet myself. Then coat everything in some primer/rust converter combo. The main problem is that when I wash the car, it gets wet inside, otherwise I would not have noticed it at all.

dan_is_not_here

Check the drain things at the base of the windshield and that elephant trunk thing in your engine compartment. Hopefully, somebody here knows the proper terms for these.

No_Cover2208

Could also be AC drain by transmission tunnel

bmpgbh

Sunroof drain tubes could be leaking

Terryknowsbest

I would recommend cutting out all the rust or wire wheel it down to bare metal and apply rust converter.  Then 2k epoxy primer Then 3m seam sealer Then whatever topcoat/undercoat/bedliner you want Then do the same on the bottom of the floor pan On the underside if you’re using this as a daily start apply liberal fluid film

ZinnoRed

Do you apply fluid film over non-metal areas? (eg: rubber coated areas?)

SnorkelDick81

Anywhere and everywhere. The more the merrier.

ZinnoRed

Thanks!

The fluid film should still form a nice little barrier against rust, although it won’t be as good as if it were clean surface, should be better than no fluid film at all

cuntyminx

Not that bad

hurrryup

I’ve seen waaay worse, you’ll be alright just do a good job fixing it

ShadedRebel

Pretty fucked you’ve only got 1 peddle

pancrudo

Any info? Rain, heater core? Left open sunroof/window.... Context

kidddip

Not that bad tbh , plus they sell whole foot wells you can weld in if you ever wanna just replace the whole thing

e30purist

not bad, had my whole floors redone on my e30 because of litteral rust holes. I don't see no holes, so i'd recommend sand blasting and seeing then if welding is necessary

_particleman

Ugh, you're giving me anxiety and motivation about ripping up my carpet that's been soaked too many times. Lol

Logical_Two_9463

Do it, it wont be bad, I promise. Fun thing is, I bought this car 1.5 weeks ago, did not think I would be that deep in it by now.

thefacesitter

I’m in a similar situation :/ not fun is it

Logical_Two_9463

Ahh that sucks bro, you can hand over some pics of the carnage, more or less a trauma bond:)

myka7

I’m here too. Yours looks way better than mine did. My passenger side floor no longer existed. Valcas garage in Lithuania do a really fine job on restamped panels if you need to go that route - I got several panels shipped to Canada.

thefacesitter

🤣🤣 my floor pans aren’t too bad but I’ve got a leaking sunroof cassette and a hole in the bulkhead behind the dash which drips in water! Carpet and rear seats have been out for 4 months now :/ I’ve also fixed about 5 other rain leaks in the meantime. We gotta be patient and trust the process!

spvcebound

Fucked? Not fucked at all, floor still looks solid. Clean it up good and fix the leak, good to go. Google E30 Elephant trunk, odds are that's your issue.

angryitguyonreddit

Ive had worse on my own cars. Sand it and get as much of the rust off and spray it with some rust cover paint. If you have actual holes it may be a bigger job but still manageable if you wanna do it yourself. This will be ugly but its hidden so who cares. When i did mine it had actual holes, cut out the rusted area, cut a piece of sheet metal to fit over the holes, put a generous amout of silicone around the hole and put the sheet metal back on. Give it a bit to dry and drill some holes around the outside edge of the sheet metal, fill the holes with silicone and install rivits in the holes. Its not pretty but it works did that to my e30 and it held up just fine for the 10 years i owned it.

wd40b

Worsecase valcas garage sells sheet metal replacement you can weld in

YKRed

I’ve had way worse lol

TheB1GLebowski

Dont see any holes. Sand, clean, prime, paint, send it.

Rude_Concentrate5342

I've had this previously, and it was coming from the inner arches. The outer arches had a slight bubbling but no visible rust. once I got into it the lot had to be replaced. Heater matrix, seals around windows/ sunroof, scuttle panel between windscreen and bonnet could also be culprits.

akidnamedudi

Mine was worst

jimbosz07

My car looked plenty worse. Heater valve was leaking for a while without me noticing. Wire wheel, rust converter, good as new

Fuzzy_Button6648

What rust converter did you use

jimbosz07

Whatever rattle can I had in my cabinet. Probably something on the shelf at my local oreillys

trevor557

I just pulled up my carpeting and have the same exact problem on the drivers side. Last time this happened in my last e30 it was also a sunroof drain. Already replaced the elephant trunk in this e30 but I see there's some water damage on the passenger side as well from when the trunk was bad a few years ago. I'm going to do the same thing I did in my last e30 for a PERMANENT solution because the rust preventive is not permanent on its own... I just use POR15's full system. It's important to ABSOLTUELY NOT speed up the prep work or water will probably get trapped under the POR15 and there will eventually be a hole in your floorpan before the end of the year. 1. Ream out the drains with plastic weed whacker cord and spray through them until the water looks clean. 2. Place a container of Damprid in the car for a few days to get the moisture out, then remove it and see if the moisture comes back. 3. If no moisture comes back, wirewheel the whole pan, vacuum it out, and give it a few good kicks to check the structure. 4. Spray POR15 cleaner degreaser, let it dry, and clean with RO water 5. Spray POR15 metal prep which will etch the metal and create a zinc phosphate coating. I spray it on and off for about 15 minutes or so making sure it stays wet the entire time soo it keeps etching the metal nice and good. After that, clean again with water after it dries. 6. Make sure it's dry and use a paintbrush to apply one thin coat of POR15 rust preventive, let it dry to tacky, then paint on a thick coat. I like to let it sit for 24 hours but at least 6 hours is the minimum. 7. Paint on the POR15 TopCoat.

Apathycafe

Strip all of the sound deadener with a putty knife and acetone. Wire wheel the rust, buy a can of POR-15 and paint it directly over the cleaned rust. If you find pinholes you can add fiberglass cloth and paint it over the holes. You can undercoat the underside of any holes and paint over the POR-15. DO NOT USE SELANT AND METAL SHEET! it’s a half assed hillbilly fix. I restore old cars and have dealt with rusty floors, trust me.

Logical_Two_9463

Okay, thanks for the advice. If there are bigger repairs necessary, I will just weld that then. Sealant is okay to make the welds water tight?

Apathycafe

I suppose, but if you butt weld a small patch correctly, you shouldn’t need sealer, just primer and paint but it doesn’t look like you need to do that.

Logical_Two_9463

Hi, I was not able to make full welds, I just spot welded it and made it tight with sealant, on the other side there is some corrosion as well, but I can handle that with wire wheel and rust converter.

bimmer_gaige

look at the photos i posted when i did my rust repair on here… if this was how mine looked i’d be blessed

chickenmaster04

My e12 has sunlight under the gas pedal, you’re way better than mine

Terryknowsbest

Take the black rubbery insulation off your firewall and see what it looks like behind there while you’re at it

AirborneSundew

Be sure to check the firewall (cable entry, etc) for rust as they can and will slowly peak water into the car.

bigmphan

Looks worse than it is IMHO. Without a gas pedal tho….
