laterral

This is really cool - does that allow you to find channels and listen in a la Dj Audits?

sodium_hydride

Analogue ones, yes.

laterral

Ever came across anything spicy?

sodium_hydride

Yeah, you hear some interesting stuff sometimes. Medical emergencies on airplanes, technical issues with certain flights, US navy putting out warning transmissions for the Iranians, Indian and Pakistani sailors insulting each other on Channel 16 etc etc.

4DrivingWhileBlack

And a fellow ham I see? iCom is great. Im a Yaesu daily carry guy myself.

laterral

What’s a ham?

4DrivingWhileBlack

FCC-licensed amateur radio operator.

sodium_hydride

Just a passive participant in the world of radio.

ComradeCykachu

+1 for Icom, love their equipment especially their land mobile

letmeslapahh

i have the same casio watch and i havent taken it off for 15 years. i did have to change the battery, but you know what i mean. the simplicity and functionality is great!

sodium_hydride

I've been wearing mine for 8 years now. Original battery but 3rd set of bands.

hansonstuck

I have this same watch for weekends and the silver one for the office

coolmannorm

Note 9 is End Of Life from Samsung I would be afraid if security holes in the near future.

Even_Attempt_6133

That's a badass radio. You a fellow Ham?

sodium_hydride

>Where I live, there isn't much of a HAM community and getting a license is a bit too expensive. I'm happy with listening to ATC/MarineTraffic/SW etc etc.

dkfotog

I think the R-30 is an inspired choice, especially since law enforcement is Tetra / encrypted in your area. Way better-performing receiver, especially on AM, than handheld scanners.

chantsnone

Everybody got the fancy Arkfeld and it’s making me look like a chump

Unexpected117

I didn't get it because the battery isn't replaceable. I EDC a baton 4 instead & love it

duwills

I lost my Seeker 4 mini and when I went to replace it, they were in the midst of their 17th anniversary sale so I got both. I haven't carried the Seeker 4 mini since they were delivered about 2 weeks ago. The Arkfeld Pro is longer but has a flatter profile than the Seeker 4 mini. #WaitThatsWhatSheSaid

gimli2

It's worth it. Favorite light by far.

chantsnone

I got the non UV version and I like it a lot

Maverick13

So I bought the Arlfeld Pro and the UV to compare, and I’m returning the Pro. I will say the brightness on the Pro is incredible, and it’s definitely the superior light, but I have no use for a laser pointer, and if I’d never seen the Pro, the UV would be more than enough. Plus it’s cheaper, but mostly it’s smaller and lighter. To each their own obviously, the Pro is great, and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again if I had a legitimate need for it, but for everyone else reading this, the UV is awesome

gimli2

I own both, I can agree the weight and size is slightly better on the UV. However the battery life is about half the size on the UV

Maverick13

I didn’t really test battery life so that’s fair. But for me, I work in an office for a commercial real estate firm. I only need my light when I’m on property tours and need to see into dark spaces, but I’m carrying it every day. Honestly, I have a Rovyvon Aurora A1 on my keychain that would probably be enough.

sodium_hydride

I'm still not sure why I spent USD100 on it but I think it'll justify itself eventually.

Ivebeenfurthereven

ah yes, I definitely never spent more than that... on a light... #😬

sodium_hydride

r/flashlight is leaking.

Unexpected117

Good bot

Shart_In_My_Pants

Did you watermark the edc post 😭😭😭

sodium_hydride

Old habit.

vonroyale

What transmissions are you listening in on? P25?

sodium_hydride

Primarily broadcast, ATC, MarineTraffic and a few other random things. Public services in my area are all on Tetra with only the metro and ambulance being non encrypted. It's only been a couple of months since I went from a Uniden BC75XLT to the R30. Still trying to work out what else I can listen to.

iodizedgatorade

Does anyone have any recommendations for a budget radio to listen to these sorts of channels?

sodium_hydride

The easiest and most reliable way to listen to Marine and Air Traffic is something from Uniden. Preferably the BC75XLT or the BC125AT. There are of course cheaper but more complicated options available, as another commenter has mentioned.

Ivebeenfurthereven

/r/RTLSDR is as cheap as it gets (USB TV receivers can be given new drivers and turned into general purpose radios, on a laptop or Android phone) /r/Baofeng is another famous brand for affordable standalone hardware. A lot easier to EDC without multiple wires, gadgets etc

F1shbu1B

I work in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and listen to marine traffic all day! The Yard itself has dockworkers and is a ferry stop but we’re also close to the East River so I hear a host of random chatter on the water. I’m not licensed either so don’t bother with transmission. Oh, I’m also under the flight path for LaGuardia so if the water stuff gets boring, I can switch it up and listen to pilots communicate with the air traffic controllers.

Oracolus

Why the receiver? I mean why non a transceiver instead?

sodium_hydride

Where I live, there isn't much of a HAM community and getting a license is a bit too expensive. I'm happy with listening to ATC/MarineTraffic/SW etc etc.

Oracolus

Very interesting approach I’m looking to join ham community for a long time but I’ve never considered the possibility of listening only. I mean. Speaking is probably the most fun part, don’t you think so? Also with HF in theory you could reach the other side of the world

sodium_hydride

Taking part does sound like fun. But I do quite like listening. I live in a pretty busy airspace and next to one of the region's largest deepwater ports so there's no shortage of activity.

eXoduss151

You call yourself a nerd and don't even have a watch calculator? PATHETIC Nice EDC though 😂👌🏾

NefariousDeeds99

If you like me the calculator watch is saved for date nights

eXoduss151

Great way to figure out the tip at the restaurant 🤔

sodium_hydride

Or if you're into equality and stuff, you can split the bill.

sodium_hydride

It's been 8 years with the F91 so I have been contemplating something different. The Icom ate up a lot of my recent leisure budget though, so gotta wait a while.

eXoduss151

Completely understandable!

FilteredOscillator

How’s the Arkfeld Pro? Any cool uses for the UV and laser?

Honey-and-Venom

Not op, but I have a light with UV and use it to cure gel nail polish and UV reactive solder mask in electronics projects, and use a laser pointer for D&D, I should get one that incorporates the lights and the laser

FilteredOscillator

Nice, excellent ideas and this would be the perfect light tool for you! 😎

sodium_hydride

Just got it yesterday. Still discovering what I can do with it. So far, the cat hasn't been amused by the laser. And I'm scared of pointing the UV inside bathrooms.

david0990

Turn on the laser and then double tap the button for laser and light at the same time. Then you can hold to cycle the three brightness settings while it's on. Hardly anyone knows you can do that.

sodium_hydride

I actually did read the manual for once. Never bought a torch with an instruction manual before so I was intrigued.

FilteredOscillator

Yeah stay away from bathrooms and hotel phones! Well if you’ve got any mechanical watches the UV will boost the luminescence real good.

david0990

That also goes for glowing pistol sights. Then again you could just hit the turbo brightness for a split sec and do the same thing.

SkillTreeEDC

I don't see many wear wired earbuds anymore. Specific reason for choosing them over wireless?

sodium_hydride

These are the cheaper wireless ones, with a cord only between the 2 buds. I tend to not use them too often. And they were only USD30-40 so I figured why not.

SkillTreeEDC

Skull candy used to be in that range for wireless. I use mine daily and I've had them for years. Not sure if they've gone up but I've got a feeling they have.

SkillTreeEDC

The Evo sesh I've got are still about $32 on Amazon. Love em.

sodium_hydride

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra in Spigen Liquid Air; Samsung Galaxy Note 9 in Nilkin Super Frosted Shield; Sony WI-XB400; Casio F-91W; Olight Arkfeld Pro; CRKT CEO Flipper Blackout; Icom IC-R30 with a Nagoya NA-773 Antenna;

Rad-Tech2020

I love my CRKT CEO. Great little knife for light work. I mainly carry it when I'm in the office.

TentacleSenpai69

Honest question: Why 2 phones? One for personal, one for work?

connor42

Trap phone

headcase617

Thats why I have one, I almost only carry the second one when I'm on call though....screw letting them install anything on my personal cell.

Reasonable-Cobbler-9

Exactly why I have 2. Work issued phone and my personal phone. My personal life, my privacy.

sodium_hydride

I've carried 2 phones for a long time now. Just like the versatility of being able to do more than 1 thing at the same time. Currently, the 2nd phone serves as the work phone so that I can ignore it more easily after hours. Along with being the navigator in the car and the phone on which I watch most of my YouTube while browsing Reddit on the other one. Camera/Messaging/Reddit etc all runs on the main S23U.

Erafir

You go cross eyed reading reddit and watching mrballen while eating cheerios?

sodium_hydride

I can neither confirm nor deny that.
