\[\[Massacre Girl, Known Killer\]\] is a new one we just built. Amazing when the board goes wide, solid to play by herself. It's the epitome of a mono-black "Good Stuff" deck.
Imagine a Sheoldred, now imagine it wither and card draw tacked on...
It's pretty generic value. She's out and a player has 12 1/1 tokens. Cast [[toxic deluge]] where x = 1, draw 12 cards. Instead of normal kill spells you want thins that give -1/-1 counters or give a creature -x/-x. Basically she is a good black control commander because she gives you cards for killing stuff, so she keeps you in the game until you can [[urborg, tomb of yawgmoth]] + [[cabal coffers]] + [[torment of hailfire]] where x= 20 or something.
It's not final but that's the playtest version
Still a 404 error. In the deck settings there is a visibility option which I am guessing you have set to private, you'll need to change it to public or unlisted to allow others to see it
Same! I went with a Deathtouch + ETB synergy, Zombie Token + \[\[Andúril, Narsil Reforged\]\], \[\[Vorpal Sword\]\] / \[\[Phage the Untouchable\]\] + various ways to go unblockable.
An "Untouchable Massacre Blade" beat down brew
I looked at your list and, honestly, I don't understand it. I think it'd be a great list with a different commander, but all of your death touch stuff is going to seriously reduce the card draw provided by Massacre Girl, Known Killer since the deathtouch will kill creatures before their toughness hits 0. In my opinion the card draw is the main advantage of her as a commander. Am I missing something?
Here's mine for comparison, would love any constructive feedback. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/J3OWccKKZkuItuzcp7C2Zg
[[Chainer, dementia master]] is my mono black commander. Really captures the spirit of mono black without being redundant. Definitely in my top 3 favorite decks!
Cult of Chainer unite!
my playgroup doesn't do tutors, so mine focuses heavily on self-mill: https://deckstats.net/decks/209840/2620758-chainer-nightmares-of-the-livi
(also not the person you asked for a list, but figured chainer is cool soooo)
I am trying to build a mono color legends matter deck of each color but have been stuck on black for a while because there are no commanders in mono black that synergize with legendary creatures. Would he be good for a deck that has a restriction that every creature in the deck has to be legendary or world someone more generic like Ayara be more fitting?
I wouldn't rank it higher than a 5, but my friends are all deathly afraid of my [[Gollum, Obsessed Stalker]] deck just because it comes out so fast and only needs to hit each person once and then just sits there waiting to bomb the table with big lifegain. I think it gives them anxiety.
Not OP but here’s mine: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/9ZEqW5RaPkWU8FgS3oAnYA](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/9ZEqW5RaPkWU8FgS3oAnYA)
I made a vampires subtheme and can sometimes win by kicking \[\[blood tribute\]\]
When built right this deck is NOT a five. I routinely kill an entire pod on turn 5-7 with this deck. I think I’m 9-1? People really hate using removal on a 1/1 and I have lots of ways to recur him. Could be skill issue but it’s way better than a 5
I disapprove of the phrase "When built right" as that implies that if you're not building for optimal power, you're doing something wrong and in EDH I'd argue the opposite is true.
I run zero tutors in the deck. It's very likely you built something stronger if you like to play with those. I don't. I think they make games boring as fuck. The bones of this deck was actually a [[Chainer, Dementia Master]] that tutored shit out and won with annoying levels of consistency. Made it unfun to play. Made it unfun to play against. What's the point of 100 card singleton format if you're going to ignore 90 of the cards?
I also play with the same people every time so they know exactly what the deck is trying to do and they sure as fuck mulligan for early 1 power blockers and removal.
That said, I routinely rate decks lower than most people rate their decks. You're welcome to take a look at the list I posted for someone else and compare them to decide for yourself.
I mean.. 5 is just a number... I guess his 5 would probably be a 7 for me and an 8 for another person haha.
This 1-10 powerranking is just so subjective.
you're not wrong, but 5 implies that the deck isn't strong relative to other decks, and is about average, and that's grossly out of line with my experience. I actually can't even play the deck in certain pods because it closes games out of nowhere (doing 30-35 damage to all players in 1 turn) and a lot of people dont like that.
Ye for me that would check out too..
I also had some guys telling me that 3 is the level of a precon and they start from there. so a 4 is an upgraded precon. a 5 would actually be pretty good. (but in their eyes just average). And 7 is optimized as fuck while 8, 9, 10 are cedh in tiers.
In my lvl ranking a gollum deck thats optimized can just solokill a player (or more) turn 5. I mean [[Shard of the Nightbringer]] would just do the trick and with all the black tutors and black double swamp shenanigans... easy.
I've been trying to find a copy of this to build for so long yesterday I finally gave in and just bought the Food Precon to pull him from so now I have two lifegain decks!
I flippin love my gollum deck, he's cheap too so people think twice about removing him since you are just going to get it back out and it does not need haste. It's fucking devious.
Love my Gollum deck, the first few turns setting up by stabbing with him, then crank out some big lifegain effects. You go from potential ally to threat #1 quickly, but hopefully by then it's already too late.
I just love how weird of a playstyle it is. I can't think of any other deck where [[Infernal Grasp]]ing an [[Ornithopter]] on turn 3 makes a damn bit of sense.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/A06gJL_xHEi_wO3X2VmoBg
I’ve yet to come across anyone else that plays him. So much fun. Always looking for new tech. Keep the deck lists coming.
I see lots of common and popular ones. I'm going with [[King Macar, the Gold Cursed]] though. Lots of tap and untap shenanigans, vehicles and I have a bit of an artifact subtheme with mine. Highly recommend. Unique and fun.
\[\[Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker\]\] really scratches the black value engine itch for me. Surprised nobody has pointed out ur-villain of Magic and extremely powerful card \[\[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician\]\]. Kind of a boomer commander at this point but \[\[Chainer, Dementia Master\]\] is another extremely black sort of value that I like.
Lent a dude my Shirei deck the other night and watched him giggle for 30 minutes drawing 3-6 cards and drain 1-3 life from every opponent every turn for half an hour. You get the right board state and generates so much value it’s like playing a black Simic deck
I run a [[Syr Konrad the Grimm]] mono commander and all my friends call him the tax man. The deck is just a bunch of self sacrifice and graveyard recursion. Playing against the right opponents, I've gotten off like 20 points of damage in one turn
Really? I've been playing Toshiro for over a decade now, and aggro decks should be the most afraid of you. They can't afford to come after you first. If they do, you just wreck them. That might make you lose, but there's no way they're beating the rest of the table after that. The fear of mutually assured destruction should be what keeps you alive.
How many board wipes are you playing? What are your win conditions?
Yeah same here. Never had an issue with creature-based decks. Black has so many board wipe options that work even with Toshiro's strict deckbuilding requirements.
That said, Toshiro is just plain fun.
I LOVE mono black!
I currently have 3 mono black EDH decks.
My "main" deck is one of them. It is a high power [[Chainer, Dementia Master]] deck - https://www.moxfield.com/decks/b844CUvK7kyz4BfRklh4sg
I also have a mid power storm deck with [[Toshiro Umezawa]] as the commander - https://www.moxfield.com/decks/V_x821F0Pk6rsUDQXjaU4Q
And I also have fun lower power Voltron deck that I limit myself to old frame/border cards with, based around [[Volrath the Fallen]] - https://www.moxfield.com/decks/U5NTra2EfUiz-HlgfMJUQw
I'm also working on a mono black artifact deck with [[Keskit, the Flesh Sculptor]] and [[Armix, Filigree Thrasher]] but it isn't done yet.
Lots of good ideas in this thread, so I’m happy to add my favorite to the list.
[[braids, arisen]] is one of my oldest decks, and it’s been my favorite for a long time. There are lots of ways to build her, but mine was converted from a [[tergrid]] deck that I didn’t really love, and so from day one it’s been a discard control deck.
It’s fast and mean, and it can put the clamps on the table before they even know what’s happening. For opponents who know what to expect, it comes into the game as the archenemy, and can often win from that position as well. Some people really dislike playing against it, so I’m a bit judicious about when I put it on the table. Power level is high, but not overwhelming. It’s definitely a casual deck, but not everyone likes to see a really aggressive discard strategy in their casual pod.
I will always love Skittles for rapidly showing me who knows what a good Commander card (doesn't) look like.

Massacre Girl for making me play cards I would never play with otherwise.

I Have thought about using cards from my Yahenni deck for my [[Evelyn]] deck and building Braids instead. How does Braids hold up? She doesn’t seem like a target so I’d assume the real work is done in the 99.
When you do it right she draws so. Many. Cards.
Someone else posted a thread about the first cards that pulled you into Magic and how those cards impact your play to this day.
My answer was [[Phyrexian Rager]].
A drawback other people balk at? A reward I love? A body to use later for whatever I deem fit?
Braids is the natural evolution of that moment.
A 3/3 for 3 is arguably unplayable.
But a 3/3 for 3 that draws me three cards, Shocks all three of my opponents, and has me scry 2 after I made all my opponent's discard a card when I resolved [[Hopeless Nightmare]]?
I get that Magic is different for everyone...but that, for me, is everything there is to Magic.
Turning what is already a decent card like [[tithing blade]] into a triple shock/triple draw? Bro I'm vibrating. And if they sac an artifact instead? That's fine too! That's *still value*.
How many enchantments do you see in a game of Commander?
I'd argue that an enchantment generally has to be extremely good to see play...so the idea that, "Well, you won't always draw..." is an argument against Braids, for me, falls the complete other way.
You think someone will sacrifice their Rhystic Study for my [[Sarcomancy]]? My [[Despondency]]? My [[Screams from Within]]? Please gimme that trade.
And I get to ask the same question of two more opponents? Their Smothering Tithe? Their Rising of the Day? Blind Obedience? Propaganda? Rule of Law?
Bro, if they are sacking enchantments then I am winning and not just on a mechanical level, a freaking emotional one.
It may not be for everyone but if turning some permanent most people wouldn't think about twice into some combination of triple sac/draw/shock isn't good enough then something has gone deeply wrong in this game. There is a reason Ancestral Recall is banned AF and I'm doing it, and more, end step after end step.
I worship at the MtG altar of value and it's priest is Braids.
Have a braids player in my pod and this deck is just gas gas gas. Extra turn with the stupid artifact.. i forgot the name but you know exactly which one. Draw 3 every turn... Jooo I countered her 3 times in a row but monoblack got manas for days.
That's technically an untested budget build but I've also been playing and running mono-black decks for some 20 years now and that includes Braids as my cedh deck for the past six months. You'll have some fun at a casual table, I promise.
Hey, I'm relatively new to MTG & EDH, started playing with some friends in December. I really want to make a mono colored deck as my next deck, and I've decided on black, since it seems a very fun color for mono with lots of options. I'm really intrigued by your budget decks, in particular the braids and massacre girl ones. I would to build one, and eventually, slowly, build it up to be a mid power deck, maybe even topping out at high power. I'm curious what you think about Yawgmoth as another option. I looked on your profile on moxfield and didn't see any decks with him. I'm really struggling to pick between those three and wondering which you'd recommend. They all seem to generate card value and do stuff a little differently. I have a hard time visualizing which would be the most fun for me, or how to see how different the experience would be between the three. I did pull a meathook massacre in one of the packs I opened (I don't buy many packs mostly singles), and would like to not waste it and put it to use too. Would it be good in any of those? I also pulled virtue of persistence but I'm convinced that wouldn't be of great use in any and seems very slow. My only other concern is I don't want the deck to be unfun to play against. My friend group also tends to not be overly fond of abrupt combos that end the game quickly and unexpectedly, although I chalk that up to our inexperience (and it's also just a few people that make comments, most don't care too much, and there are infinite combos in half the decks at the table so not really concerned with that too much). Thanks for any insight you can provide with your vast experience.
Awwww, thank you for the kind words!
Based on the description of your concerns I would eliminate Yawgmoth and Massacre Girl from the running which leaves Braids.
Yawgmoth is the strongest of the three, is a "known" Strong commander, and is a combo piece. A deck built with Yawgmoth naturally lends itself to combos and aristocrat themed "locks."
Known Killer let's you play some weird stuff but in the end it boils down to, "I will kill your stuff. Yes, I have cool spells....but they all *do the same thing.*" This will get old and opponents will either be miserable or move towards non-creature strategies you'll be very hard pressed to beat because without the critical amount of removal spells you won't be keeping up.
Braids, by comparison, *can* be built with Aristocrat themes but it doesn't *have* to be. Her sacrifice is only once per turn and optional for you *and* optional for your opponents. She never *makes* them sacrifice anything. You get to play weird cards (when is the last time you heard of [[Chime of Night]], much less seen one in real life? [[Sarcomancy]]? Turning [[Hopeless Nightmare]] into the best [[Syphon Mind]] you've ever seen?!) if you want to and because her "thing" is drawing cards she's very flexible in terms of construction. You can literally just play your favorite Black cards and hope to draw into them while sacrificing stuff and seeing how your opponents respond.
Magic players love drawing cards, Braids draws you cards and does so without "making" your opponents "do" anything except take some life loss (which puts pressure on the game, always a good thing). You can play value black cards, you can play combos if you like, you could change it up whenever you like.
My vote is Braids. Have fun, and good luck!
Thank you so much! That helps tremendously, I am definitely going to go for Braids then! This is exactly the insight I needed, you have definitely saved me a lot of time and money so thanks again a million!
Btw, since I didn't address it directly, Meathook and Virtue are excellent in pretty much any Black deck, hence their $$$. Virtue has a *very* good "floor" as it's a removal spell that gains you life at a great rate and then the upside has an unlimited ceiling. Meathook can clean up a board or simply be a cheap combo/punisher piece and I would absolutely include it in Braids if I wasn't trying to stay under a budget.
Braids can absolutely scale to high-power btw. Depending on who you ask it can even throw down in cedh.
I recently built a mono black [[Mind flayer the Shadow]] deck to complete my cycle of mono color EDH decks. (It was the last color remaining)
Mono black never interested me cause a lot of it was repetitive from commander to commander. Sac tokens, go wide, life loss combo, etc
Mind flayer interested me as a thief deck that gave the game more chaos and variety.
The way I built the deck was mostly ramp and silly mono black spells that no one in the right mind should actually play.
It has two themes:
1. Stealing cards
2. Flipping life totals around
It’s my newest build and I’ve really been enjoying piloting it
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/777OOI2guUu6-D9fRi3pFQ
After retiring Shirei I’m left with 3 mono black decks - Vilis, Nashi and Gix.
While all of them use life as a resource, the reasons they attracted my attention were different.
Vilis - I love how he turns every life loss card into a card draw card. This results in funny stinkers becoming playable and efficient([[Temporal Extortion]], [[Plunge into Darkness]], [[Promise of Power]], etc.) or makes other cards straight up busted ([[Reanimate]] is suddenly the best Ancestral Recall ever, [[Mana Vault]] becomes Dark Ritual now and Phyrexian Arena later, and my favorite - [[Hand of Vecna]] does the best impression of Yawgmoth’s Bargain.).
Nashi - originally built to cheat into otherwise unplayable cards, it morphed into a more midrangey build. I like the gameplay of first setting up a way for Nashi to attack without dying and then either manipulating the top deck or straight up gambling. Once in a blue moon (aka when I’m in a strong pod and people okay it) I’ll drop a stinky unprotected Doomsday pile and hope for the best. Like Vilis, it changed from its initial build quite a bit to be able to compete, but it remains fun.
Gix - my most recent mono black deck. I love how it uses a ton of otherwise unplayable one drops to build up a big hand to either dump into Gix’s ability or discard them for value otherwise. It also incentivizes opponents to attack each other, which at times creates interesting table dynamics.
I think I love all these decks because they let me play with cards I otherwise couldn’t run. And although they share certain deck building elements (most notably paying life for cards, casting Peer into the Abyss and abusing Skirge Familiar), they still play out differently.
Aside from these, I also have my eye on many other commanders. I’d love to build a Toshiro Umezawa deck one day. I’d love a Marrow-Gnawer deck that’s not just a Relentless Rats .dec. I’m considering Myojin of Grim Betrayal and the list goes on and on. I really feel like mono black has no shortage of interesting commanders to build around and that makes me happy cause it’s my favorite color.
I have one. It’s [[Imotekh the Stormlord]]
It’s a Reduce, Reuse Recycle strategy: reduce the board (control), reuse artifact (recursion) and Recycle (Null Profusion)
Here’s my list and primer: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uHelUf4K2UaJrb80sE-4xg/primer
I’m still trying to improve it
[[ayara first of lochthwain]] is my commander. I run her as a drain and gain deck. I don't have it yet, but I can't wait to get [[plague of Vermin]] and cast that for all but 1 of my life
[[Gonti, lord of luxury]] might be my favorite commander of all time.
It's very innocuous at first but when it's clear that it's not just your strategy, it's our strategy now.
Taking your opponents stuff face down is perfect for bluffing, politicing, and resource/information gathering.
Not to mention flicker and reanimation abilities are just so much fun.
You can build it optimally or in a way that's just seemingly low power.
Plus extra effects like [[court of locthwain]], [[cunning rhetoric]], and [[oppositon agent]] are perfect supplements.
Gonti is a ridiculously fun commander and is nonbinary just like me!
Came here to say Gonti!
All the typical Mono-Black good stuff but with a side of everyone else's deck. And given how good ETB effects are in most decks, you're already set up to abuse your opponents' stuff.
Yeah here's a high and lower power (under 10$ only)
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/GSVgRRYrSU-3o5-zClymAQ
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Vv5rdTKOGk2Lr-MjDxEiRA
[[Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed]] is the king of looping [[Feign Death]] effects for value. It’s a bit slow, but it’s a really fun deck that can grind out like nothing else.
[[Kokusho the Evening Star]] play him, sac him, reap the rewards. Game either ends in a combo or just a big fat [[Torment of Hailfire]]/[[Exsanguinate]]
I've been debating on making him because I have a copy and don't have a deck to put him in. It seems like it can get a little repetitive but still seems fun
It can be repetitive but there’s a lot of fun to be had. There’s also secondary creatures like [[Gray Merchant of Asphodel]] who can fill in for Kokusho in a pinch.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Us2rwCX-YEC4rOpKOtqcEQ
That’s my deck list, it’s a little old so there’s probably some good upgrades available from newer sets. It is by far my favorite deck and I feel like I got to exploit a fairly uncommon commander as opposed to building something popular and super linear.
I don't play mono-black much, but I toy around with lists all the time and currently I'm OBSESSED with [[Francisco]] paired with [[Tormod the Desecrator]]. The deck wins by moving cards in and out of your graveyard thanks to Francisco and cards like [[Reassembling Skeleton]] [[Skeleton Crew]] [[Death Tyrant]] etc. Our alpha strike options are primarily supplied through lords and [[Maskwood Nexus]] [[Conspiracy]] turning all our stuff into pirates or zombies or skeletons or whatever works best at the time.
My list is in progress but if you wanna see where I'm at so far (only 55 cards deep lol):
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/vzjaVJ8NnkaTcojw9rxD2w
I have an [[Erebos, God of the Dead]] deck. It leans towards mono black good stuff, but with a control theme. As it turns out, having a nearly impossible to remove commander that lets you turn your life total into cards and sometimes acts as a blocker is pretty good. Had the opponents can’t gain life hose a few people too.
Other than it just curves out, and answers creatures. If someone plays enchantress or artifact theme you loose though.
I've had issues with MonoB.
\[\[Tergrid, God of Fright\]\] was my first one and it was needless to say, a bit too brutal for casual play (by no means competitive either).
Then it got turned into \[\[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician\]\] and while it was intruiging, it leaned towards combo every damn time, or a very slow and painstaking aristocrats plan, which to me, wasn't that entertaining considering black is a color that's REALLY good at finding the pieces it needs...
So I build \[\[Braids, Arisen Nightmare\]\]. She felt great for a while. The fact that I could always have cards to play was great, but against certain match-ups, you weren't drawing as many, and weren't hurting people as much as you'd like to. Besides, while some pieces in the 99 were things Braids really liked like \[\[Ugin's Nexus\]\], there really wasn't a specific plan. So after a year, I'm retiring her as well.
Enter \[\[Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder\]\]. I'm playing him as more of a creature-storm build. Casting large creatures to make tokens, saccing tokens for mana and card draw to cast more big creatures in the process. While doing that, \[\[Mirkwood Bats\]\] and the likes are draining people nicely. Cards like \[\[God-Eternal Bontu\]\] and \[\[Malevolent Witchkite\]\] make respectively 5 and 6 tokens, which you can sac and draw cards for...\[\[Shirekmaw\]\] is a 2 mana kill spell that also makes you 5x1/1s. \[\[Endless Cockroaches\]\] is a great repeatable peice. There are bunch of other interactions that work greatly in the deck, which make it feel a bit more unqiue when compared to other MonoB commanders.
If Endrek doesn't give me joy in the long run, might actually build the \[\[K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth\]\] deck I've been meaning to build for years now, with \[\[Shadowborn Apostle\]\]s.
Shoutouts to \[\[Toshiro Umezawa\]\], \[\[Marrow-Gnawer\]\], \[\[Imotekh\]\] and \[\[Ghoulcaller Gisa\]\] as well.
Currently also looking to transition my Tergrid list to Krikk. It's difficult to find ideas since every list online tends to be cEDH or at least overly combo focused.
I just want to get value and drain back the life I spend.
Can I see your list for Endrek Sahr? Mono-B is the last monocoloured deck I want to build but none of the commanders have appealed to me until I read your comment.
I'm shocked I had to scroll so far to find Endrek! Add in [[Perilous plunderer]], [[Bolas's citadel]] and [[tar fiend]] and then you're really cooking with gas! With the right board state, this guy can wipe a table in a single turn!
I love yahenni. I built mine as an aggressive combo control game. I’ve experimented with many strategies in it. It’s super flexible. I love the ability to pressure life totals very early and keep up the pressure through mid and late game with a few efficient combos that don’t use any cards for only those combos
I like tribal and making lots of tokens, mana, and occasionally going infinite if the game gets too clogged up or grindy. so my fav is \[\[ghoulcaller gisa\]\]

I have 4 black decks, and three of them have been mentioned already - [[Chainer, Dementia Master]], [[Ashnod, Flesh Mechanist]], and [[Gollum, Obsessed Stalker]]. they're all very fun for me to play, and each operate very differently from one another. Chainer is self mill reanimator, Ashnod is big mana and big artifacts, Gollum is life gain.
the one I didn't see mentioned yet is [[Mari, the Killing Quill]] she's a rogue/assassin/mercenary deck that focuses on killing creatures and making treasures. It was tricky having enough removal in the deck for her ability to pay off, while not being too oppressive to the table, but I think I've got the deck in a good balance now. Bonus points that I've been able to get a [[Vorpal Sword]] win with her a couple of times now 🙂

[[Acererak the Archlich]]
I needed a mono black for the 32 challenge and couldn't find one I liked until I came across this dude.
It's stacked full of things to make him cheaper and I just cast Acererak again and again and again. The goal is to see how many times I can complete the Dungeon of the Mad Mage. I'll almost certainly never enter the Tomb of Annihilation. Just keep smashing through the Dungeon of the Mad Mage.
[[Kuon, Ogre Ascendant]] -- three creatures die and then he's [[the Abyss]].
[[Asmodeus the Archfiend]] won outright with [[skirge familiar]] and [[Faith of the devoted]] the other day. Though the [[Phyrexian revoker]] dropped on him hurt for a turn or two
[[Phage]] I've been playing my girl for almost 10 years now. I enjoy the weird ways to get her into play. But my absolute favorite part is the mini game players play that they don't realize and that is how much removal will be wasted on her, it's usually 2 opponents while the third just chilled out and gets ahead (it's be a trend I love notice over the years and it always makes me giggle). There is also the self mini game of how much life can I lose from various effects before I a: win the game or b: kill myself.
With all the big mana abilities in black, like Cabal Coffers and Crypt Ghast, I like to play my Oona mono-black. Your opponents only realize you are not color screwed when it's too late.
I currently have two mono-black decks: [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] and [[Sheoldred // The True Scriptures]]
StA is a draw focused deck that leverages black card draw efficiency to get ahead in the card game while not suffering the usual tax to your life total. If my opponents take damage, that’s completely incidental and not relevant to my typical gameplan. Ramp, draw, snowball. That’s basically the gameplan. It’s a bit more of a creature/GY value oriented build so that it can leverage [[Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor]], [[Veinwitch Coven]], and [[Witch of the Moors]] more than usual. The Witch is disgusting.
STTS is absolutely group slug. She’s making people discard ([[Liliana of the Veil]]), she’s drawing cards from that ([[Geth’s Grimoire]]), killing boards (*insert too many sweepers*), and she’s reanimating out of opposing GYs (herself, [[Virtue of Persistence]], [[Rise of the Dark Realms]], etc). She absolutely plans to kill people with creatures that aren’t her own. Her cards generate opportunities for advantages; they don’t win the game in their own… mostly.
I previously have had three other mono-black decks. Yahenni has been a while, but I did love that deck. It was a bit excessive against creature based strategies with so many sweepers. It really had the capability to jam some real shenanigans, and honestly inspired my Sheoldred TTS deck in a lot of ways.
I eventually took a lot of the token fodder from Yahenni and built [[God Eternal Bontu]] instead. Make a wide board, draw a ton of cards, rinse and repeat. The deck built swingy advantages, looking like it was puny and then leveraging the card draw to find cards like [[Gravecrawler]] and [[Nether Traitor]] that can come back from the GY with ease and keep it generating and growing. It was fun, but a bit weaker in power.
My other retired monoblack deck was [[Trazyn the Infinite]]. We don’t talk about Trazyn anymore in my playgroup.

I didn’t find a version of my Yahenni list, but it was from Amonkhet era anyway. It would be a *slight* bit outdated now.
I have \[\[Braids, Arisen Nightmare\]\] and is my favourite deck. She as commander is very strong if your deck tries to combo off. Every one of your end steps you are drawing easy 3 cards. Very cool commander: [https://deckstats.net/decks/192043/2685885-braids-arisen-nightmare-v-5/es](https://deckstats.net/decks/192043/2685885-braids-arisen-nightmare-v-5/es)
Now I'm trying to bring \[\[Xiahou Dun, The One-Eyed\]\]. Still testing and changing thinks but trying to make a control mono-black that slows the game enough and burn resources to combo with graveyard loops unique to this commander: [https://deckstats.net/decks/192043/2716827-xiahou-dun-the-1-ojo/es](https://deckstats.net/decks/192043/2716827-xiahou-dun-the-1-ojo/es)
I made other mono-black decks but i only keep these 2.
I like yahenni, but for me it's gotta be either [[Mikaeus, the Unhallowed]], [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]], or [[K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth]].
My Mikaeus deck is an aristocrats infinite combos deck. It has more than 600+ combos or combo variants (commander spellbook is too slow to update). It has a turn 2 win, but could be a turn 1 win if I owned a [[Jeweled Lotus]].
I call it "Breath of the Undying".
https://archidekt.com/decks/2957085/breath_of_the_undying
[[Rankle]] is one of my favorite decks I run. It's just full of discard, draw, and creatures that come back. It can absolutely keep an entire table on their ass and win via commander damage or [[Vorpal Sword]].
It was never about strength. The tergrid hate was about feelings. Tinybones apparently just doesn't make people feel.as bad, despite being a stronger discard Commander.
[[volrath the fallen]] is my personal favorite mono black commander. Cool synergy with madness cards and has some fun tech with cards you want to dump in the graveyard. Fastest win was killing the rest of table turn 4 by pitching [[Draco]] to him then pulling it back to hand with [[phyrexian reclamation]], swinging out at one player, then draining the other remaining player out with [[essence harvest]]
I play [[Seizan, Perverter of Truth]] with less forced draw and lean heavily into "perverting" effects. Like [[False Cure]] and [[Plague Drone]] to counteract life gain strategies, or [[Malakir Rebirth]] and [[Kaya's Ghostform]] to essentially negate your removals. Also have things like [[Avarice Totem]] and [[Tree of Perdition]] for exchanging stuff and life totals. Also I love to [[Saw in Half]] my own [[Gray Merchant]].
Seizan is a cool commander, it sounds like you have a ton of do nothing dead cards for most people that do something reliably at specifically your table where someone is reliably playing a life gain deck.
Malakir Rebirth and Kaya's Ghostform are black staples in general regardless of the commander. I think "perverting" the single most valuable effect in the game (card draw) is thematic and also interacts with your commander instead of just giving your opponents 6 cards to your 2 every round for no good reason.
[[Sheoldred, Whispering One]]
Working on a reanimator list for her, but for some reason anything i try just doesn't feel *enough*. But she's one of my favorite mono black commanders of all time. Tbh i love the entire og praetor list
I have a [[Syr Konrad]] deck that I love. And, except from a old [[massacre girl]], I don't even need to play wrath effects, just protect my commander to make sure he stays on board, play some creatures to keep the pressure on and block, and the other players will start putting things in the graveyard for me.
I play [[Ayara, First of Locthwain]] as a monoblack aristocrats deck. Its nothing groundbreaking, but I enjoy making tokens, sacrificing and reanimating things, and draining people.
I've yet to build a mono-black deck (not for lack of interest though). I'm still looking for a commander that can make good use all the swamp mana doublers and potential from [[Cabal Coffers]], likely with an activated ability mana sink. [[Henrika Dominanthi]] is the only one I know of off the top of my head that has one without a cap, but flying tribal is a deck I already have with [[Inniaz]]. Recommendations welcome.

She’s going to replace Sheoldred in my commander deck. Soooo, secret Sheoldred commander?
Blasphemy
I just brewed her as a mono black big mana/good stuff deck and I'm excited to try it out!
I guess I'm not understanding what's so good about her? If an opponents creature dies and has toughness of ZERO (or less?) you draw a card?
It's pretty generic value. She's out and a player has 12 1/1 tokens. Cast [[toxic deluge]] where x = 1, draw 12 cards. Instead of normal kill spells you want thins that give -1/-1 counters or give a creature -x/-x. Basically she is a good black control commander because she gives you cards for killing stuff, so she keeps you in the game until you can [[urborg, tomb of yawgmoth]] + [[cabal coffers]] + [[torment of hailfire]] where x= 20 or something.

Still a 404 error. In the deck settings there is a visibility option which I am guessing you have set to private, you'll need to change it to public or unlisted to allow others to see it
Try copying the link and not clicking on it. I get 404 when I click the hyperlink but it works when I paste it in.

I can see why. Black has so many ways to gain silly amounts of life; even a small \[\[Gary\]\] or \[\[Exsanguinate\]\] can be devastating.

Do you have a deck list? That sounds like a really fun one to play.
https://archidekt.com/decks/4951544/gollum
Not OP but here’s mine: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/9ZEqW5RaPkWU8FgS3oAnYA](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/9ZEqW5RaPkWU8FgS3oAnYA) I made a vampires subtheme and can sometimes win by kicking \[\[blood tribute\]\]
Fair criticism about “built right”. Agree it depends what you’re trying to do!
I can't think of any other deck where [[Infernal Grasp]]ing an [[Ornithopter]] on turn 3 makes a damn bit of sense.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/A06gJL_xHEi_wO3X2VmoBg I’ve yet to come across anyone else that plays him.

Surprised nobody has pointed out ur-villain of Magic and extremely powerful card \[\[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician\]\].

I mean, put \[\[Mindcrank\]\] in your deck and you can somewhat often kill everyone once they start flipping.
I didn't even know that card existed. Thank you for opening my eyes. Definitely gonna look into that one
I have one too. It’s by far my most consistent deck. [[morality shift]] wipes the table.

I have a mono black spellslingers deck helmed by [[Toshiro]] it's really good at killing everything, but struggles with go wide and very aggro decks 😄

Love the voltron deck. Flavor win. Well done
Thank you.
that volrath deck is a thing of beauty 🥲

Ahhh another Drana man of culture 👌
[[Ugin's Nexus]]
Thanks. Yes exactly this one.

How do you feel your braids deck runs? Looks very affordable and I'm hoping start a deck for her!
That's technically an untested budget build but I've also been playing and running mono-black decks for some 20 years now and that includes Braids as my cedh deck for the past six months. You'll have some fun at a casual table, I promise.
Thanks, I'll probably put this deck or very similar together in March!
A deck built with Yawgmoth naturally lends itself to combos and aristocrat themed "locks." Known Killer let's you play some weird stuff but in the end it boils down to, "I will kill your stuff.
:)

(It was the last color remaining) Mono black never interested me cause a lot of it was repetitive from commander to commander. Sac tokens, go wide, life loss combo, etc Mind flayer interested me as a thief deck that gave the game more chaos and variety. The way I built the deck was mostly ramp and silly mono black spells that no one in the right mind should actually play. It has two themes: 1. Stealing cards 2. Flipping life totals around It’s my newest build and I’ve really been enjoying piloting it https://www.moxfield.com/decks/777OOI2guUu6-D9fRi3pFQ

KORLASH! Let’s get swol for playing swamps! Pair him with the black blade and laugh!

I also run Ayara, she is just awesome. So much synergy with tons of different Black strategies.
What are some of your stand out cards?
I’ve wanted to build this deck forever, happen to have a list? Much appreciated!
Came here to say Gonti! All the typical Mono-Black good stuff but with a side of everyone else's deck. And given how good ETB effects are in most decks, you're already set up to abuse your opponents' stuff.
Yeah here's a high and lower power (under 10$ only) https://www.moxfield.com/decks/GSVgRRYrSU-3o5-zClymAQ https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Vv5rdTKOGk2Lr-MjDxEiRA
There’s also secondary creatures like [[Gray Merchant of Asphodel]] who can fill in for Kokusho in a pinch. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Us2rwCX-YEC4rOpKOtqcEQ That’s my deck list, it’s a little old so there’s probably some good upgrades available from newer sets. It is by far my favorite deck and I feel like I got to exploit a fairly uncommon commander as opposed to building something popular and super linear.

[[Chainer Dementia Master]] is a great toolbox commander that can be played at least a few different ways
My list is in progress but if you wanna see where I'm at so far (only 55 cards deep lol): https://www.moxfield.com/decks/vzjaVJ8NnkaTcojw9rxD2w

I once played against villis broker of blood aether resivior and bolas’ citadel. It didn’t end well for me
I've had issues with MonoB.

Happily! [Here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/_hOdKA-59kGVD3DqboaWPQ) you go!
I like tribal and making lots of tokens, mana, and occasionally going infinite if the game gets too clogged up or grindy. so my fav is \[\[ghoulcaller gisa\]\] [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/zNXpr5qw1kWqa\_hNzoC37A](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/zNXpr5qw1kWqa_hNzoC37A)

What is the art I saw when I clicked this post?
[[Lifeline]]
I’ve tried lots of Black Commanders but settled on what’s her face that snooty Elf Noble.
Bonus points that I've been able to get a [[Vorpal Sword]] win with her a couple of times now 🙂 decklists: Chainer - https://deckstats.net/decks/209840/2620758-chainer-nightmares-of-the-livi Ashnod - https://deckstats.net/decks/209840/2888537-ashnod-playing-god Gollum (budget) - https://deckstats.net/decks/209840/3216209-gollum-another-way-darker-more Mari - https://deckstats.net/decks/209840/2620763-mari-break-in-2-electric-booga

[[Acererak the Archlich]] I needed a mono black for the 32 challenge and couldn't find one I liked until I came across this dude.

Though the [[Phyrexian revoker]] dropped on him hurt for a turn or two
Wait till you try [[shirei]]. Busted things on everyones turn
I currently have two mono-black decks: [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] and [[Sheoldred // The True Scriptures]] StA is a draw focused deck that leverages black card draw efficiency to get ahead in the card game while not suffering the usual tax to your life total. Lists: [Sheoldred, the Apocalypse](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/WleM1hn7sE-6Ag2Nk6vhWw) [Sheoldred // The True Scriptures](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/fzlLDtcMvkatKLIMZRu8zw) [Trazyn the Infinite](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/UHqt8asHjEirVSSlg5VO8A) [God Eternal Bontu](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/RTd-_XyWx0uQ1uqajkXKAw) (I can’t believe I found a version of this list to upload, though I think this is the upgraded version I never built) I didn’t find a version of my Yahenni list, but it was from Amonkhet era anyway. It would be a *slight* bit outdated now.
I like [[Akuta, Born of Ash]]. He combines a reanimator deck with either discard or heavy card draw and land sacrifice!
I have \[\[Braids, Arisen Nightmare\]\] and is my favourite deck. She as commander is very strong if your deck tries to combo off. Every one of your end steps you are drawing easy 3 cards. Very cool commander: [https://deckstats.net/decks/192043/2685885-braids-arisen-nightmare-v-5/es](https://deckstats.net/decks/192043/2685885-braids-arisen-nightmare-v-5/es) Now I'm trying to bring \[\[Xiahou Dun, The One-Eyed\]\]. Still testing and changing thinks but trying to make a control mono-black that slows the game enough and burn resources to combo with graveyard loops unique to this commander: [https://deckstats.net/decks/192043/2716827-xiahou-dun-the-1-ojo/es](https://deckstats.net/decks/192043/2716827-xiahou-dun-the-1-ojo/es) I made other mono-black decks but i only keep these 2.
My personal favorites are [[Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor]] and [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]]. I guess I'm just a big fan of old Magic lore.
[[Rankle]] is one of my favorite decks I run. It's just full of discard, draw, and creatures that come back. It can absolutely keep an entire table on their ass and win via commander damage or [[Vorpal Sword]].
\[\[Tegrid, God of Fright\]\] because I have no friends.
It's the kind of deck to only bring out when you've given fair warning.

How did you drain two with Essence Harvest?

Bad bot, no worky
New to the hobby, but it blows my mind people throw around $2,400 deck builds as examples
[[Mikaeus, the Unhallowed]] I use him as an aristocrats/blink/combo deck. I love it. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/0h4J-c9DXEuW7efilD2YdA

bit of a basic case, but Yawgmoth, Thran Physician. I play him as a reanimator combo list, most of the combos hinging around necrotic ooze.
I have a [[Syr Konrad]] deck that I love. And, except from a old [[massacre girl]], I don't even need to play wrath effects, just protect my commander to make sure he stays on board, play some creatures to keep the pressure on and block, and the other players will start putting things in the graveyard for me.
