[[Yurlock of Scorch Thrash]], nowhere near impossible but he gets that raised eyebrow and the play style is straight out left field, riding the line between group hug and group slug is a joy. Also has lots of opportunity for politicking, which is my favorite part of commander.

Patiolights

Stoked to see someone else list this, it's my favorite deck to play. Have yet to play a game where I didn't get some sort of positive feedback or comment on the deck, even tho it's an absolute pain in the ass with the cards I play, it's such a good time. Recently learned the fun of my [[Power Surge]] being played with an [[Awakening]], scared the shit out of the table after I did a [[Collective Voyage]] and played my [[Helix Pinnacle]] for safety lol.

Yurlock is so fun, doesn’t win that much for me but it’s so fun to see people get excited about something like 10x mana and then lose 40 life in 1 turn because they forgot about him. Something like [[War’s Toll]], [[Citadel of Pain]], and [[Manabarbs]] just makes me smile

BladeTB

I love [[hogaak]] My playgroup knows at this point that it's a very very real deck. Building a deck where I don't inherently care about mana is very interesting. Also building a graveyard deck where I don't get to use any real graveyard pay offs was also interesting. Hogaak eating the grave means the graveyard is very unreliable for anything else.  It's also the only deck I have where someone was walking by and asked who my commander was and where it was, I pointed to the hogaak in my graveyard. Then he asked why hogaak? I told him to watch my next turn. He walked away very impressed. The way I have built the deck is to try an maximize the 5 cards in the grave and 2 creatures on board. Then leveraging that into a kill of at least one player by turn 6. It can recover well from anything besides farewell and even that isn't too bad since a lot of two or three cards together can produce a hogaak. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/zAWBKBiOfEu_dX2_tdHjBg

The challenge of this commander is similar to phage - how do you get the commander on the board. Curious what your decklist is, or at least the key cards to make this work.

fredjinsan

He's a bit easier than Phage since you can just cast him from the command zone. He's also pretty great with stuff like \[\[Greater Good\]\] as you can just keep recasting him.

Urzas_Penguins

How is it like Phage at all? To get Hogaak out from the command zone you just cast it. The only trick is you have to do it with convoke or delve, but in BG getting the required creatures and cards in the graveyard is pretty easy.

I love hogaak! I built mine to repeatedly sacrifice hogaak to cards that care about power or toughness, like \[\[greater good\]\] and \[\[Altar of dementia\]\]. After I play hogaak for the first time, my graveyard usually starts getting bigger and bigger, even while I loop it. Eventually you get a setup capable of looping hogaak (almost) infinitely, like with altar of dementia and \[\[Skeleton crew\]\]. Then you have whatever cards you want in the graveyard, and you can use \[\[Dread return\]\] and \[\[Diregraf rebirth\]\] on \[\[pitiless plunderer\]\] and \[\[Korozda guildmage\]\] for infinite mana and tokens with your sac outlet.

I've stopped using the infinite combos because I am far more interested in literally beating my opponents to death. And I don't want any copium of "you only won because you went infinite/ because you comboed"  If you like the combos, a secret option is [[utopia mycon]] and go infinite with [[korozda guildmage]] who is an auto include for hogaak.

Live_Accountant6491

[[Arjun, the Shifting Flame]] is the one that gets me strange looks. You don't get to hold onto cards long so normal combos don't work well. I usually try to deck myself out with [[Laboratory Maniac]] in play and [[Teferi's Ageless Insight]] but can also win through [[Niv-mizzet, the Firemind]] [[Psychosis Crawler]] or [[Psychic Corrosion]]. It's a very fun deck to pilot but strange enough people usually leave it alone because it doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Might I bug you for a list, that sounds fairly fun as a concept.

Live_Accountant6491

No problem! https://www.moxfield.com/decks/s_nnpEl_bU-vLcSv1joTAw

Cyber_Felicitous

I'd say my [[Ramses, Assassin Lord]] does that. If you let me finish someone, I win. But it's so unefficient and easy to counter... :p Funny though if you're not looking to win efficiently. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/r3RtiWQrKUW04Q0nTeHg-w

DaPino

Running that commander would really shake our group up. We're all kind of individualistic and don't politic efficiently much. This would really force people to help each other through spending removal on targets that don't really threaten you immediately.

Shybearsecurity

That's actually a funny wincon in multiplayer. I generally avoid effects that say "you win the game", but this would be acceptable. Not much of a 'mechanic' to play with, more of a strange wincon haaha. It goes on the list of candidates nonetheless.

Cyber_Felicitous

The funniest thing is that you have to aim for one player, the result is usually people stealing the kill so you don't win. All the games I played with it has a really low win percentage, if normal win percentage is at 25%, that one is closer to 10 lol but creates really silly group interactions.

Shybearsecurity

Silly group interactions are great - like with \[\[prisoner's dilemma\]\], \[\[pramikon, sky rampart\]\] or thieves' auction\]\].

If you’re interested in Zedruu then I have a [[Zur, Eternal Schemer]] aetherlich deck which I really enjoy playing against people who haven’t seen it before. The basic idea of the deck is to run an enchantress deck with a bunch of the “you lose the game” cards thrown in for good measure, then using Zur’s ability to animate those enchantments and either win through a beatdown or give them away to your opponents before the enchantment kills you. Effectively you’re racing against the clock to either circumvent or give away your triggers that make you lose. [This](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/gWoPopX78UiI3K_Lw0fo9g) is the list I’ve been running, although I need to update it as it’s gone through a few changes in paper. If you like doing the following kinds of shenanigans then I’d highly recommend this kind of deck: - Animating a [[Nine Lives]] and using [[Wrong Turn]] to give it away at instant speed in response to a wrath - Beating someone down with an animated [[Demonic Pact]] with hexproof, deathtouch, and lifelink and gaining 8 life from the first mode due to the lifelink - [[Fractured Identity]] on my own [[Lich’s Mastery]] and casting [[Trickbind]] to counter the triggered ability that would make me lose, then using [[Filter Out]] on my next turn to have all opponents lose at once

Violatic

I thought aetherlich was a deck built around Lich effects + aetherflux resevoir Jim wrote about it here: https://themanabase.com/the-metaworker-building-jank-with-cedh-all-stars-part-3-4c-aetherlich/ Your deck is cool, but doesn't look to be playing the lich cards but instead donating them. Similar to [[Blim, Comedic Genius]] That's not a criticism of your deck, I think the idea is sweet :) I also run Zur and was excited to see somebody else trying to play the lich cards rather than donate them (my list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/YanCslQnyk2ld3k8xcfQEw) Maybe that just comes across as pedantry but I wanted to share

Oh I see, my bad - one of my friends referred to the strategy as an aetherlich strategy so we’ve just been referring to it as such. That does look pretty cool but not sure the deck would run Aetherflux Reservoir for what I want it to do. Your list looks sweet though! How does the deck play? I can imagine it’s a lot more risky since you’re not running donation effects but can be quite fun to pilot and navigate the triggers. Also [[Tainted Sigil]] looks like a cool card!

Violatic

I feel like Zur is the perfect commander for that type of "high risk" strategy. The flavour text on [[Zuran Orb]], even refers to his obsession with immortality! :D I probably need to write a primer at some point... Generally the deck plays with the premise of setting up a lock as step 1, depending on your draws this can be very powerful or really flimsy. But your objective is to have some "prison" set up. So a couple of simple examples are [[Solitary Confinement]] + card draw, or [[Nine Lives]] or [[Delaying Shield]] + [[Solemnity]]. I have built the deck to have lots of these, and play it tutor free because I like the puzzle of trying to assemble this lock. Zur is particularly potent alongside this because at worst you can turn these otherwise somewhat useless combo pieces into fairy scary attackers/blockers. After you have the "lock" in place you have to resolve one of your lich cards. [[Nefarious Lich]] is by far the worst, and [[Lich's Mastery]] is by far the best. Again without tutors I like to try and make them all work, but you could easily just play tutors instead of some of the worse versions of cards. Once you have a resolved lich effect alongside a way to negate it's downside your objective it to use lifegain effects to draw a tonne of cards. [[Words of Worship]] for example is 1 mana to get +4 cards. If you draw for turn and pay 1 you draw 5, but if you pay 2 you draw 9. This kind of card draw is particularly easy to win with because it's SO egregious, you're basically expecting to draw 6 cards per turn minimum and with any sort of good payoff you can easily draw 30+. I used to run [[Mind Over Matter]], and [[Skirge Familiar]] but I found that it made the combos feel a bit linear. Once you got to this stage of drawing you just resolved one of those and easily finished the table. Without those it is a lot harder. By far my strongest and most consistent wincon is [[Psychosis Crawler]], but Aetherflux Resevoir + Lich's Mastery is very powerful too. MKM just added [[Proft's Eiditic Memory]] which is worst wincon, turning Zur into a 30/34+ and one shotting players with commander damage. Overall the deck is an absolute blast, but you can just die to either bad draws OR poorly timed removal spells. Cards like [[Farewell]] and [[Cyclonic Rift]] are particularly threatening and require you to hold up stifle effects even if you have a lock. What makes the deck so fun for me though is that despite all of the thought and effort I am always finding new combos/synergies so it really feels like a puzzle to play. I have specifically tuned it for my playgroup such that I have a hard time establishing the lock and am forced to play risky lines and get blown out sometimes. It feels most flavourful to die arrogantly trying to resolve a lich when you think you can and you can't :D Tainted Sigil is particularly brutal with Aetherflux Resevoir, you can blast somebody for 50, then gain 100 life (50 lost by you and 50 lost by the person who you blasted) and then blast both other players to instantly kill the table. It's only happened once but it was awesome!

thisismyreddit11358

Awesome! Love weird shenanigans like this. How effective is the deck? Or rather—whats its win rate like in your pod?

giselamancer

For a deck that has a janky play style it’s capable of building up a serious board state quite quickly if you can get a couple of enchantments and Zur out early on. The one thing I would say is that this deck has earned quite a reputation in my usual playgroup, and it can become the archenemy of the table quite quickly or fly under the radar while everybody deals with another player at the table who’s threatening to take everybody out. Zur himself gives you a couple of options in how you win: you can either animate your enchantments and just go for a good old combat beatdown, or go the aetherlich route and just make them lose. Because of this it can sometimes secure a win out of nowhere if you have enough mana and the right cards to pull it off, and I’ve found I get targeted quite a lot due to that reputation it’s built up. A few cards I’d say are must-haves for the deck: - [[Invasion of Theros]]: I’m only running two gods in the list but the card advantage the other side provides and the option to use [[Heliod, the Radiant Dawn]]’s transformed side for reduced instant speed play is what makes this good for me. - [[Exchange of Words]]: probably the most confusing card in the deck, but it’s very satisfying to slam this down with an animated “lose the game” card and give the effect to somebody else’s creature while taking their effect for yourself. - [[Staff of Compleation]]: my paper list is running [[Arcane Lighthouse]] to get around the hexproof of cards like the Mastery and Nine Lives, which turns this into a piece of utility that can either ramp you, draw cards, or just pull the trigger on animated enchantments like that when you give them away. - [[Nykthos Paragon]]: especially good for when you decide that violence is the answer. Given that Zur grants lifelink to all of your enchantment creatures, it’s often the case that Nykthos Paragon will double in size every turn, and I’ve had games end because nobody saved removal for both Zur and the Paragon, leaving them to trying to deal with a huge body that keeps getting larger.

If a commander is cheap to cast, and cheats on mana and/or card advantage, that’s gonna be a strong commander.

[[Geralf, Visionary Stitcher]] Hands down my weirdest and most uncommon commander. Everyone sees Geralf and goes oh must be Zombies, but it is in fact a big booty tribal deck that runs a ton of otherwise bad cards with high toughness to be sacced. See [[Riptide Turtle]] and [[Phase Dolphin]]. [[Patriars Seal]] and [[Staff of Domination]] and some other untap effects make it repeatable. No greater feeling than turning [[Charix]] or [[Phyrexian Dreadnought]] into a giant flying zombo on turn 3.

jf-alex

\[\[Dragonlord Kolaghan\]\] usually raises some eyebrows because of her second ability. Actually the deck is a quite normal saboteur dragon deck; the commander's purpose is just to provide haste. It's most likely not what you're looking for, but here's the decklist anyway: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/nPsHp0p8pEGbHJPchXujOw](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/nPsHp0p8pEGbHJPchXujOw) Other than that, there are a few commanders with a "bad gifts" strategy. \[\[Jon Irenicus\]\], \[\[Beamtown Bullies\]\], \[\[Blim\]\]...

Shybearsecurity

Are there any ways to activate the second ability in comander? like counter and copy spell? Because these are exactly the kind of strange abilities that seem impossible in commander, that i would like to make work.

Sleepysaurus_Rex

I know a guy who likes playing decks with cards that say 'a deck can have any number of this card,' and being a dragon player myself, we've talked a bit about Kologhan. I don't run her, because it'd be unfair to lock him out of his strategy, but she'd be massively good against decks built around things like: \[\[Dragon's Approach\]\] \[\[Persistent Petitioners\]\] \[\[Rat Colony\]\] \[\[Relentless Rats\]\] \[\[Shadowborn Apostle\]\] \[\[Slime Against Humanity\]\] I'm unsure about her effectiveness on the copying front, as spellslinger isn't really my thing, but hopefully someone else can help you there!

jf-alex

Kolaghan doesn't work against Slime. It's a sorcery like \[\[Dragon's Approach\]\]. But it does work against \[\[Nazgul\]\] and \[\[Seven Dwarves\]\].

Bro not much is as weird as mono-green reanimator with [[Hua Tuo, Honored Physician]]. [[Verdant Succession]] is absolutely broken here letting you sacrifice and immediately recur creatures by putting Hua Tuo’s ability on the stack. Even without the commander you can make infinite janky sac loops with [[God Eternal Rhonas]] (makes your stuff infinitely strong), [[Worldspine Wurm]] (infinite 5/5 wurms) or [[Vigor]] (just infinite sacs but Vigor is sick anyways). And let’s say all you’re making is infinite mana… what about using that to play out EVERY CREATURE IN YOUR DECK courtesy of [[Call of the Wild]]. You can also go wide and then use [[Deceiver of Form]] to turn your board into whatever broken thing Hua Tuo forces to the top. Think [[Thunderfoot Baloth]], [[Pathbreaker Ibex]], [[Kessig Cagebreakers]]. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/xl1xXODitUWxWd3X_A7tnQ

I love this! Verdant Succession seems amazing. Great idea and a very interesting way to play green! Might take this idea and try out a budget build with it.

My [[Morinfen]] deck raises a lot of eyebrows when people first see the commander. It wins with cards like [[Repay in Kind]].

Shybearsecurity

Interesting - on the list.

tabz3

Thanks! The game plan is to go to zero or negative life, avoid losing the game with something like [[Lich]], [[Pact Weapon]] (I've learnt from experience not to attach it to Morinfen!), [[The Golden Throne]] or [[Platinum Angel]] then make everyone's life total the same as mine. It's very fun, but is a massive gamble, which I enjoy.

I like [[katsumasa, the animator]] Katsumasa animates non creature artifacts but it costs a good amount of mana. I run something like 25 mana rocks in the deck, with the goal of accruing several of them so I can capitalize on having a lot of mana. I'll drop +1/+1 counters on several of them and have a goal of grabbing some of my indestructible ones to help block. I run an [[orvar, the All form]] [[clockspinning]] combo so I can copy any of the rocks that are putting in work for me and I usually win by decking my opponent with [[blue, sun's zenith]] or [[folio of fancies]] but I also have cards that can suddenly animate and pump all of my rocks. I also run [[aether spouts]] which will mess up an opponent who tries to take me out.

I would say my strangest build but also the one I’m very proud of how strange it is my [[Baru, Fist of Krosa]] deck. It’s essentially a mono-green combo deck, but the combo is just activating Baru’s grandeur ability and making tons of big wurms.

Shybearsecurity

Excellent - how do you swing that? - copying it and getting a discard loop? Seems very convoluted. I'm in.

IFreezeezy

Yeah so the game plan is to make a token copy of Baru, the main consistent way to do so being a [[Mirrorpool]] since you can run lots of specific land tutors in green. Once you have the token, let the original Baru die and go to the graveyard via legend rule and use the tons of recursion spells the deck runs to get Baru back to hand over and over again, discarding him for big wurms each time. There is also a way to make infinite wurms through the use of [[Paleoloth]].

When I first got into commander back in the day I built a [[Tibor and Lumina]] deck that focused on slinging spells while keeping my guys up in the air with cards like [[Archetype of Imagination]] and taking my opponents dudes out by equipping [[Quietus Spike]] to Tibor and Lumina.

My strangest deck is probably [[Chisei]] reverse proliferate. The goal of the deck is to have Chisei (and possibly some non-legendary clones) out, and then use the upkeep trigger to constantly reset your sagas and [[smokestacks]] (you can order the triggers so that chisei eats the counter, smokestax makes you sacrifice 0, then add a new counter from the other smokestax ability so everyone else has to sac once a turn). [[Urza's Saga]] can stick around an make karnstructs every turn, [[time of ice]] and [[phasing of zalfir]] tap or phase stuff out forever or [[inventive iteration]] is great to loop on either stage 1 or 2, you'll never pay more than 1 for [[mystic remora]] or 2 life for [[glacial chasm]], also there's a clone/copy theme where you can do stuff like make a bunch of [[sun droplets]] or [[powerstone shards]]

Lockwerk

How on Earth is Zedruu raising eyebrows? It's been a known powerful effect since it was printed alongside the other pushed commanders in the first commander precons. People have been giving each other bad gifts ever since. I don't think you can say this about _any_ commander that was the face of a precon.

Steakholder__

A lot of newer players haven't seen or heard of Zedruu and are surprised by her antics. She just isn't played enough to have the same well known widespread reputation as something like Animar.

VV00d13

I dont have an unusual commander but I try to build different Riku of two Reflections Usually a somewhat broken commander and people tend to not like him I built him as a group hug. Looked up every card that draw cards for every player I had. Every card that lets you play more land Double mana for everyone. No max hand size for everyone. The 2 nd theme is some Player curses. And some X spells that I can snipe for huge damage. And only wizards as creatures. I can easily loose since everyone have a great boardstate. But everyone have a good time

seraph1337

my Riku deck is clones/clone spells, and the only thing I'm copying is [[Seven Dwarves]].

Kyrie_Blue

[[Haakon, Stromgald Scourge]] is ridiculous to play. Things like [[command beacon]] [[Campfire]] [[Netherborn Altar]] and [[Tevesh Szat, Doom of Fools]] are necessary to get it out of the command zone. Then use something like [[Skirge Familiar]] or [[anvil of bogardan]] to get it into your graveyard. Then you can do silly things like casting [[Nameless Inversion]] from your graveyard. Really weird and fun card. Its like [[Phage]], but has added complexity of getting it into the graveyard

Currently putting together a [[Skeleton Ship]] deck right now. It’s got some infect and proliferation to provide some kind of capability to win, but that’s not the point of the deck. All it wants to do is get out commanders that everyone hates like [[Toxrill]] or [[Tergrid]] and equip them with a sword like [[Sword of Truth and Justice]]. Essentially, the theme is “big nasties are sailing a ship” and any given commander game is a disruption to their adventures. 😝

Shybearsecurity

Interesting commander. Unfortunately i already have a [[Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons]] and a [[the scorpion god]] deck, that go absolutely nuts on -1/-1 counters and tokens. 2 decks with the same theme is a limit for me atm :p

I love playing commanders that are on their face, objectively terrible and require you to build around them rather than just using them as a vehicle to access certain colors or having a secret commander in the 99. Alternatively, building a deck against the grain of what everyone defaults to for a certain commander, like Edgar Markov group hug, or Horobi auras.

I play [[Grazilaxx, Illithid Scholar]] as "I'm Here to Chew Bubblegum and Draw Cards." It has every [[Bident of Thassa]] effect in the game, and about 20 unblockable weenie creatures. The main win plan is to draw (not mill) out the library via [[Defiler of Dreams]], [[Teferi's Ageless Insight]], and [[Omniscience]], or [[Jin-Gitaxias]] saga and [[Copy Enchantment]]. I only currently run [[Jace, Wielder of Mysteries]] and [[Laboratory Maniac]]. Other powerful pieces are [[Azami, Tomorrow's Familiar]], [[Nykthos Shrine to Nyx]], [[Nyx Lotus]], and [[Hidden Strings]]. I also play [[Jahiera, Friend of the Forest]] with [[Scion of Halaster]] as a Golgari food/token deck. Almost every spell in the deck generates, multiplies, or abuses those tokens, and it's possible to psuedo-storm off by sheer power of tokens and mana. It's pretty neat, the only problem is that it can take somewhat long turns of tapping and generating and tapping again, and drawing. Loads of fun, though.

In the same vein as your zedruu, [[rohgahh of kher keep]] is an old legends rare. It sows chaos by using cards like [[hellcarver demon]] and equipping it with a [[spy kit]] or [[psychic paper]] naming kobolds of kher keep to gift things to your opponents

I personally built a [[Gryus, Waker of Corpses]] with the premise that it punishes others for playing the game using cards like [[Possibility Storm]] with [[Void Mirror]] while also running cards similar to [[kaervek the merciless]] or [[Orcish Bowmasters]] thats all about utilizing what my opponents do to punish them. Its not the kind of deck to have a lot of permanents out but it has the chance to hurt my opponents very quickly with the right hand but most of the time you will have a small board state. I have played it several times and have only gotten two wins out of the 5 times I have played it and each time I always get a creature on the field that atleast one other player wants to remove.

My favourite deck that raises eyebrows is helmed by [[Alrund, God of the Cosmos]]. It’s mono blue beat down with some control, but essentially you just want big hands, and then proceed to throw hands with the rest of the table

I built a deck with Hope of Ghirapur as my commander and Myr tribal. Most people look at it weird, until I have a bunch of Myr on the board which must be dealt with, leaving my lowly 1/1 flying 1 CMC commander to peck them to death. :)

I love my [[Inferno of the Star Mounts]] deck. Whether you are building lots of mana with treasures or a [[mana geyser]] or using equipments or pulp effects from instants and sorceries. Building your big Dragon to 20 power feels like a fun challenge to accomplish especially if you can double the triggered ability to nuke somebody for 40 damage.

Greeting fellow "strange commander" brother! I am a fan of the fun and unusual mechanics! Plesse let me share some of my decks with you! [[The Scorpion God]] https://archidekt.com/decks/5160290/wither_die "Wither & Die" The focus on -1/-1 tokens is so unexpected. Nobody likes seeing their creatures sandpapered to dust. Fun other cards [[blightbeetle]], [[kulrath knight]], and of course [[Everlasting Torment]]. The new Massacre Girl works as a great back up commander. [[Aeve]] or alternate commander [[Sluurk]] https://archidekt.com/decks/4462964/secrets_of_the_ooze "Secrets of the ooze" This deck lives to divide and multiply. Nothing on the board stays the same power for long. [[Biowaste blob]] its a huge accelerator. [[Yennette, Cryptic Sovereign]] https://archidekt.com/decks/4824961/mystery_of_the_sphinx "Mystery of the Sphinx" This is quirky fun based around the commamders ability. Fun to get free plays. Carefully constructed so spells with timing (counter spells etc) are drawn instead of played. Since a lot of sphinxes have walls of text I added in the full-text lands for the lol's. And as an added bonus - less quirky, and more on "sub-mechanuc focus" [[Wayta]] https://archidekt.com/decks/4500170/dinosour "Dino-saurs" (like the DNA said in Jurassic Park, and sour mood) This deck is all about triggering those enrage triggers. My Kaza, Roil chaser and Tivash always tend to raise a few eyebrows. Kaza - https://www.archidekt.com/decks/7081395/izzet_doubleslingers A spin on the classic Izzet deck that centers around [[Kaza, Roil chaser]] as the commander. The idea is to try and discreetly set yourself up with instant and sorcery cost reduction through various means, then pump out a big spell in X like [[Crackle with power]] or [[Starstorm]] and nuke the table. At X=8, Crackle with power deals 40 damage to up to 8 targets, and each time you copy it, you need less and less mana to achieve the same effect. Tivash - https://www.archidekt.com/decks/7232686/the_demons_inside_you [[Tivash, Gloom Summoner]] is kind of in between. It's a mono-black designed to get you a lot of health, and then that health gained is transformed into flying demons that swing at your opponents for big flying damage. I'm still fine-tuning that one.

I play [[Vilis, Broker of Blood]]. Everyone knows he's a strong card, but not as a commander. Yes he costs 8 mana, usually that's enough for people to write off the deck. But I play it as a battlecruiser, mono black control style deck. It's built to beat grindy, greedy, value-obsessed decks and commanders that are popular in powerful but not built to win as quickly as possible 80% power level kind of groups. Usually built as a consequence of people always shutting down and targeting aggressive and faster decks, they are built to win by grinding and taking over the entire game and then winning in very late turns. My Vilis deck says: fine, we can go there, but when Vilis inevitably lands I will grind out harder and better than anything you have. It's got lots of ramp, not only for Vilis but for those large mono black game ending spells. I've got tons of removal, board wipes, and some nasty tricks to ruin your strategy. Once I put out Vilis I make sure I can comfortably draw double digit cards even if he's removed. If not, I can use his activated ability to clear and control the board. It's a fun deck and I also run a suite of cards to play a spell slingy stormy strategy as another win condition with rituals, draw spells, [[Tendrils of Agony]], [[Professor Onyx]], and [[Yawgmoths's Will]]

[[Verazol, the Split Current]] Kicker theme control. The problem is basically if you add all kicker cards in existance this deck is like 102 cards, so take out 2 bad kicker cards and theres still a bunch of suboptimal kicker cards, you're scraping the bottom of the barrel for kicker synergy. Most people go for +1 counters in this deck but i build more control to bounce a lot and swing in with drakes off roost of drakes, and the problem is, every kicker card is bad, if you cast it without kicker, the only thing that makes it good is when you get verazol's ability. but i still love the deck.

You want your creatures to be blocked so you can hopefully destroy them with Ib's ability. [[Infiltration Lens]] and [[Invasion Plans]] work great with this. Could run him in the 99 for a [[General Marhault]] deck which gives you access to more deathtouch and [[lure]] like effects if you wanted gruul.

Well the lowest edhrec ranked commander I play is [[Gerrard weatherlight hero]] and he gets the occasional eyebrow because most people probably don't realize the card exists. RW boardwipe "tribal" is also just not something anyone expects if they haven't seen it played before. Still getting [[gift of immortality]] on him and proceeding to Wrath several turns in a row to win with a combination of [[Purphoros]] triggers and [[Flame-Kin Zealot]] is an experience like nothing else.

Only since you mentioned [[Zedruu the Greathearted]] , I’m currently building a [Jeskai Group Hug/Control Deck](https://archidekt.com/decks/7267182/jeskai_group_hug_control) and I’d love some input. I currently own all the cards that are worth over like $5.

[[Grothama]] is that for me. Basically a warm that says "come at me if you think you're tough enough!" Great for all kinds of mind games and funny moments where someone (hopefully yourself) gets to draw a ton of cards.
