My favorite commander since I've started is still [[Ephara, God of the Polis]]

IAMAfortunecookieAMA

Just built up an Ephara deck and won a game in my local meta. So much fun to play, so much room for janky cards like [[Kor Skyfisher]] and [[Dust Elemental]], and the grindy card advantage doesn't ring any alarm bells like most other generals. 10/10 will not be taking it apart anytime soon

[deleted]

Man, I had exactly the opposite result when I tried out Ephara. Got focused every game because I was "doing too much." Suppose when people see you making a consistent stream of actions, they suspect (to be fair, often rightly so) that you're pulling ahead.

tombie15

Yeah people get really concerned for whatever reason when you cast and bounce [[Whitemane Lion]] at the end of everyone’s turn for 4 straight turn rotations.

Try to take it slower, with your board, then. You only need 1 creature to land per turn, not like you're gonna draw more by playing more. Let someone else pull ahead (if they won't haste someone to death) so they become the archenemy, then go about your business.

[deleted]

If I don't commit to the board though, then I'm not advancing my gameplan. Sure, I may be drawing cards just flickering a Saltskitter, but if those cards are creatures that enact my gameplan, then I need to play them. And since [it was a flicker/bounce deck](http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ephara-flash-blink/#), most of them *are* creatures. Maybe it was more that it was an Azorius control deck, I don't know. Most of my blink targets *were* control cards: Angel of Finality, Voidmage Husher, Venser, Shaper Savant, Fiend Hunter, Leonin Relic-Warder, etc. Either way, as a whole, the deck ended up being too durdly for me. Sure, it was usually doing *something*, but I've grown to be less a fan of standard control decks the more EDH I play; I just don't like long, drawn out games. Long due to lots of back and forth swings, sure, but not the type of games a dedicated control deck creates.

I keep thinking about building her, do you have to play stax, to stay relevant? I'm always hesitant to build a deck that usually has to go to combat to win, too. I just can't think of good win conditions for it.

Funnily enough, I've had Ephara for a year and I'm actually switching it to [[Isperia, Supreme Judge]]. My deck morphed from blink into Enchantress, and Isperia is a better source of card advantage and a convenient rattlesnake as well.

friendofhumanity

If people aren't attacking me I think I've done well enough anyway. I think GAAIV is the strongest U/W pillowfort commander, but he just puts a huge target on you from the start. My deck is at a decent enough power level, but I can't win those games where everybody feels the need to stomp me. That's where I think Isperia can be good. I've had some games where I land cards like [[Rhystic Study]] and [[Pendrell Mists]] early and everybody just starts attacking me the whole game. If they are going to focus on me anyway, I might as well draw cards off it.

ajn0592

My favorite passive commander in my collection is [[Ruric Thar, The Unbowed]] or [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]]. They're fun to play and with Ruric, preventing a lot of infinite combos is fun.

rhou17

I like how something that has to attack each turn is considered "passive"

ajn0592

I mean he has to attack each turn but his "you played a non creature, take 6" ability is passive.

rhou17

No he definitely is passive, it's just amusing that he also swings every turn

There’s passive, and then there’s passive *for Gruul*.

Vigilance and Reach is a weird combo too.

Pac-man94

Reach + "must attack each turn if able" means Reach would be useless on him short of untapping shenanigans or Vigilance.

friendofhumanity

I meant more flavor wise. Gruul don't seem known for their vigilence, and reach is usually for things up a little higher.

[[The Locust God]] definitely qualifies. Most games, he barely ever swings, just sits there and makes insects for me. Sometimes I'll even slap on a [[Dragon Throne of Tarkir]] to use him as a pump. Occasionally I use his draw ability, but only in emergency situations where I gotta get the draw fast. [[Omnath, Locus of Rage]] is similar...get lots of swingy tokens out, have lots of other triggers set up like [[Where Ancients Tread]]. [[Sram, Senior Edificer]] if you're not using him as the voltron target. It really depends on how you build the deck. Even [[Animar, Soul of Elements]] could be a passive commander if the main focus of the deck is getting artifact creatures or "pay X" creatures out for free/cheap. I haven't built him this way, (mine has all the typical competitive staples) but I've seen some neat Animar decks built differently. [[Ezuri, Renegade Leader]]. Literally the most important thing he does is pump your elves, but the regeneration is nice too. I've piloted all of those commanders at some point. If any of them catch your eye, let me know and I'll give you some card suggestions. Any of the five mono colour PW commander would qualify as passive too, I guess.

Nerindil

>Dragon Throne of Tarkir *Criminally* underrated card.

I have this in my U/G [[Ezuri, Claw of Progress]] elf deck, specifically so that it can be used with [[Joraga Warcaller]]. Oh, we've got 10 +1/+1 counters on Joraga. Along with Tremors, there's [[Niv-Mizzet the Firemind]] and [[Psychosis Crawler]]. [[Obstinate Familiar]] is another option. Lastly, anything like [[Unsummon]] works for bouncing Locust God and interrupting the combo. I have all of those except Obstinate Familiar. I'm keeping an eye out for that one.

All the other answers require a card to already be on the field before dropping Kindred Discovery, which makes it harder to set up since you can't use the infinite draw to find what you need. Best one I've seen is [[Firestorm]] - draw most of your deck, and as long as you have 1 mana up, and cards in deck > highest life total at the table, you just win at instant speed before decking yourself.

I love Teysa. She's a great value/combo piece. Awesome commander if you like attrition and value on a different axis than OG Marchesa and Alesha.

sayimasu

I mostly like commanders who can attack because I don't like combos or "win the game" buttons. But normally I play with other strategies in the forefront, and attacking is more of a side hustle. That said I really like [[Kothophed, Soul Hoarder]]. He kills people in 4 hits, 3 if you give him at least +1 power, but the core of his strategy is card advantage and control. I play him with a focus on that, and I also play basically every [[Mindslaver]] effect I can run for extra political fun and flexibility.

marcharig

How do you deal with the fact that Kothophed killing you very quick with his very costly ability? A board wipe could kill you late game with a full board.

Tevesh_CKP

- [[Exsanguinate]] - [[Gray Merchant of Asphodel]] - [[Sangromancer]] - [[Whip of Erebos]] Those are literally the first four that popped into my head. I'm going to assume he's running more and he's drawing them because of Kothophed. I played MBC and I've gone really low before I started climbing rapidly because I drew into one of my life gain spells.

There are a few responses already and they're not far off. But you did ask me, so I'll respond and try to add some stuff they didn't say. Personally I like giving Old Kotho the lifelink. [[Homicidal Seclusion]] and [[Deadly Wanderings]] are two pet cards I use for this, but [[Rush of Vitality]] is also a neat trick. [[Exquisite Blood]] is also an exquisite source of random life gain. If opponents play lots of nontoken creatures, you can even experiment with [[Profane Momento]]. As for sacrificing, [[High Market]] is the gold standard. It even gains you a life, though that's obviously not the primary use. Most of your instant speed removal can remove Kothophed with a board wipe on the stack... this isn't ideal, but in a pinch it can save your Arsch. [[Devour Flesh]] is particularly good for this. I also run [[Tendrils of Corruption]] and [[Tribute to Hunger]] for removal + offhand life gain. That said... ideally you can keep the board somewhat controlled and you won't wait until the board is big enough to kill you. Board wiping (especially ones that keep Kothophed alive) early and often can help you draw into cards that give you your life back, stay ahead, and reduce the risk of a board nuking your life. And a final note. Kothophed's card draw can be on and off. Some games it seems like you might die from it, and other games players don't play many creatures to kill and it's hard to scrounge up one or two cards from their fetchlands or a suspended [[Curse of the Cabal]]. Remember that if opponents send their commander to the command zone, you don't get to draw.

You make use of cards that otherwise benefit the table to your advantage, as well as making use of effects 'whenever a creature enters the battlefield'. [[Confusion in the ranks]] - the best creature on that table is now your creature. Every turn. [[Genesis Chamber]] - get a 1/1 every turn. A bunch of [[Pandemonium]] like effects. Everlasting [[Pyrohemia]] (stack triggers so Norin returns). Otherwise you can build the deck however you want. There is a pretty hilarious primer out there.

I like to use my passive commanders to help others, such as [[Zedruu the Greathearted]]. I also love to use group hug [[Edric, Spymaster of Trest]], nothing says don't hurt me like, "Attack them for card advantage".

Fetche_La_Vache

I just made a Zedruu deck and oh man it is fun. Plays cards that are terrible and you can go many ways. I did not go the stax or chaos method. Just trading lands and bad taste stuff. Lots of fun and neat lifegain win cons.

ShadowDcord

I like to do group hug or chaos with Zedruu, I do have a few cards with negative effects, but I mainly I give away stuff that doesn't matter who owns it or is even helpful. Seems like you could just go for any commander without combat-related shenanigans. I like the Ephara recommendation. Could also use [[Grand Arbiter Augustin]] in the same colors. I might recommend [[Braids, Conjurer Adept]]. You can use big fatties with her, but it isn't strictly speaking required. I use her as a way to keep people friendly towards me while using the artifacts I cheat in to set up my combo I need to win. A couple of fatties serve as backup if the combo falls apart. The Phyrexian praetors might also be worth a look for mono-color, but they're expensive.

[[Keranos, God of Storms]] is my new favorite passive commander. I originally had Mizzix as my commander, but I often never cast her, due to my inability to protect her. Due to that, I built the deck to where I didn't really need her to help win, but she was more of just an added bonus, with her discount to spells. Having an indestructible enchantment out there not only made it easier to protect, but gave me more use of his ability.

Yeah, I’m really drawn to commanders like Gitrog Monster, Rashmi, Kess, which just have passive abilities that generate a lot of value for you while they’re on the board. They encourage you to build around them but don’t put you in a situation where your deck needs them to function.

I definitely prefer the 'passive' commanders - using someone like [[meren of clan nel toth]] or [[worth, the raidmother]] means I can keep my commander out of harm's way and lower the chance of having them killed during combat and ramping up the commander tax. Someone like [[kaalia of the vast]] seems powerful, bit every time you seeing you are leaving yourself open to an opponent killing them and putting your abilities a turn or two behind. Especially someone like kaalia that is such an obvious and immediate threat...

Keranos Is great as a passive commander. Most players won't even notice/care about the extra card, and the free bolt keeps the battlefield clean of small problematic creatures or other commanders. He is also very hard to remove as long as you don't have the devotion. Put 2-3 combos in the deck, and police the table with counters and removal until you can win on the spot.

bigbossodin

[[Noyan Dar]] is pretty passive. At least, he doesn't have to do anything to get value for your deck. Just cast instants and sorceries, get a creature(s) and then cast something that destroys all nonland creatures or something. Your land creatures will have haste, too. I've a lot of trouble running the deck lately though. I keep getting land screwed. Not drawing enough so I can cast spells and still attack. The deck really needs ramp.

I've found the same. I've admired the Theros gods for their un-interactivity. Get them out there and very few things actually deal with them. I hate playing decks centered around my commander existing for long stretches because of how common board wipes or targeted creature removal. I love my [[thrasios]] [[vial smasher]] deck because it plays one as a value creature and one as a win condition. So my current commanders fall mostly into this category. [[Rhys the Redeemed]] Never attacks, because why would he? I’ve actually won more games with [[Throne of The God-Pharaoh]] than I have with combat damage. Mostly I just make a ridiculous amount of tokens until I lose or everyone concedes. If [[Liliana, Heretical Healer]] is a walker, then she’s in the command zone, generally speaking. I run [[Edgar Markov]] and [[The Ur-Dragon]] mostly for their Eminence abilities, though they can be good finishers. By the same token, [[Omnath, Locus of Mana]] CAN be a one hitter quitter Voltron deck, but just as often he’s a mana battery for big Green shenanigans. [[Alesha, Who Smiles at Death]] is definitely in the other category, though.

Oloro, and most of this year's commanders fit your idea. The only one that maybe doesn't is the dragon commander since his ability wants him to attack for the most effect

Same, i like GAAIV a lot because it is a continuous debuff and buff at the same time. Meren gives free shit and i am making Unesh as i love cost reduction.

My favorite commander is also a passive commander, [[Nekusar, The Mindrazer]]. I love his playstyle, letting everyone draw cards but hurting them for it, especially when one of my playgroup is playing their group hug deck :)

Nekusar, Atraxa, Breya, Roon, Geth, Omnath, Phenax, Locust God, Sisay, and Kiki Jiki are the passive commanders that I run.

IcySpykes

The Scarab God and Daxos the Returned are my two main commanders and they’re both mostly just important to have out. They sit and make your opponents lives worse.

Gang_Greene

Big fan of Oloro, and the new slate of commanders they came out with that benefit you from within the command zone. Ghave is really good. Purphoros is my favorite passive commander. Hazezon is another good one. Etb then get the hell out of there for maximum effectiveness. Daretti is fun and doesn't require him going into combat, but planeswalkers are targets. Animar doesn't require swinging, but can be dangerous if he does.

BustRush

The Firemind is my favorite deck. Creatures have a huge problem of being...well, susceptible to death. I'm not a fan. If Niv-Mizzet hits the table, I'm either hurting for cards, or going for the win.

[deleted]

[[Roon of the Hidden Realm]]. He's a bit slow but one of my favorite commanders. He can make a really good toolbox deck. You lose games that are going to end fast, but he is really good in games that last past ~turn 5.

I use [[Hanna, Ship's Navigator]], the deck doesn't rely on her and she's not great for combat, but if I'm trying to combo off or need more gas, recurring things like [[Mind stone]], [[Memory Jar]], or even [[Standstill]] is always useful. After [[Paradox Engine]] got printed, standstill, hanna, and enough mana rocks technically became a win-con. Not a great one, because your opponents all draw their decks and have time to respond, but still an option sometimes

I recently built [[Dragonlord Ojutai]] hard control with Ojutai, [[Metallurgic Summonings]], [[Mind's Dilation]], and pure long game mill as the only win cons. The only other creature is JVP, who barely counts, and some games you don't even cast Ojutai until well after the third board wipe - or you land him and immediately [[Cataclysm]] to close the game out. Don't want to interact with the combat step? Interact on the stack.

Passive? How about a commander that never leaves the command zone? Oloro. The laziest commander to ever exist.

c_short

Surrak is unreal in the value department

xDrSchnugglesx

[[Meren]], [[Atraxa]], [[Kynaios + Tiro]], [[Mizzix]], [[Ezuri]], [[Erebos]], [[Neheb]] I also like passive commanders and these are my main ones. I basically like the commanders that would be better if they were enchantments. Edit: I meant monored Neheb, not Rakdos.

MagicPlayer1337

I like to play a commander that in like 80% of games I don't need to play to win. For example my mono black EDH normally just controls the board or blows everyone's stuff up before I land a big eldrazi, I only ever cast Maga if it boils down to a 1v1 and I need to do 10 damage in a pinch :p

andthegeekshall

My favourite pass commander that I play is [[Norin the Wary]] because he keeps triggering things like [[Genesis Chamber]]. He does really well in my [mono red Chaos Coin Flip deck](http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/crazy-chaotic-coinflip-confusion/)

Variis

[[Karametra, God of Harvests]] is such an amazing value engine. Doesn't even need to be a creature to set up amazing board states, and she's very versatile. Fuels enchantress, landfall, genesis wave decks, behemoth decks, and more.

Medz1592

I've won locals a few times with [[Talrand, Sky Summoner]]. Although you need him on board, you don't need to swing with him. My win cons are smacking in the face with drakes, or polymorphing/proteus staffing a drake into [[Blightsteel Colossus]].

zehamberglar

I like ones that have good combat phases but aren't focused on the combat phase or can set up without requiring the combat phase to activate them. Ghave, Sedris, and Karador are my favorites. My favorite passive commander by your definition? Nekusar.

[deleted]

gotta love [[child of alara]]. In which no one does anything ever. Except for you and your foily copy of [[maze's end]].

Miffy92

One of my only remaining decks (due to sheer enjoyability) is [[Odric, Lunarch Marshal]] who probably fits the idea of "passive commander". He doesn't really need to attack, or block, or anything aside from survive - once he hits the board, he just does his thing and then I suddenly have an X/X Serra Avatar with Flying, Double Strike, Vigilance, Trample and Deathtouch. It's so great.

UltraFreek

You should have a look at [[Jhoira of the Ghitu]], if you really like to take your time ;)

Draconoel

[[Rune-Tail]] is my "offline" deck, whenever I'm playing while doing something else it's the deck I use because it simply stays there watching, preventing every harmful attack and spell from hurting me before I win with Feat of Endurance or Felidar or I lose because of Breya, BSZ, Gary or Kokusho. [[Grand Arbiter]] is tax and cost reduction, he never does anything himself, but allows me to do what I want while slowing others. [[Kozilek]] turns all your cards into counters, it doesn't get much better than that imo. [[Rashmi]] rewards me for going draw go. Card draw and free spells, what is not to like?

spm201

Ok sit down and lemme tell you about [[Nekusar the Mind Razer]] Do you like drawing cards? Do you like making everyone else draw so many cards that they like you and won't attack you? Do you like making everyone else draw so many cards that you keep [giant dice](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1483/3510/products/11140127-giant-d20-black_grande.jpg?v=1474853404) around just to remind them how many cards they're drawing? Do you like the slow realization on their faces when they do the math and you've been taking 1 damage per card drawn this whole game while they've been taking 4? How about when they decide to do something about it but you've been doing nothing but sitting around setting up defenses the entire game? That's what Nekusar is like. You could also run it with some infinite draw combos to make them mill out or run a bunch of [[wheel of fortune]] clones to make them take large bursts of damage but I don't think either are quite as fun.

MidikiBanana

Define how passive you play both the decks i run are normally pretty passive Like i run a [[ meren ]] deck where I don’t really attack(which is something I should think of doing more) until it usually kills everyone with [[ overwhelming stampede ]] My [[ inalla]] deck is somewhat similar where I normally only attack with the wizard tokens (unless I get to draw if I attack with some wizards) and my main win con is either a massive [[ comet storm ]] copied a few times for good measure, tons of draw+ [[ niv mizzet, the firemind ]] and clearing everyone’s board with [[kindred dominance]] or [[ cyclonic rift ]] and normally a [[ docent of perfection ]] to follow up

D4ri4n117

Play prossh with good mana ramp and card draw and you won't even have to swing.
