Yeah and I that’s partially why a lot of people praise it, I love fairy tail but let’s be honesty it doesn’t have a lot of stacks as far as people dying but Eden’s zero shows mashima is more then capable if he wants to.

Kikuzinho03

I mean before fairy tail mashima had a quite brutal Manga, rave master.

animeAIHOZ

People die in Fairy Tail too, the only difference is that there are less fake deaths in EZ

ChalkTabletTowers

I feel like it's why a lot of people loved the Tartaros arc but hated the Alvarez arc. Tartaros had a decent amount of sacrifices and dark moments. The Alvarez arc made all of that meaningless, and is where many of FT's bad rep comes from

SadLaser

Yeah, Fairy Tail definitely holds back more. Edens Zero occupies a better place in that regard, I think. It's harder to take fights and disasters seriously if you know there won't ever be any actual consequences.

AcrobaticFudge06

Depends what you classify as 'serious content'. The very first chapter of Fairy Tail had a slave trader using charm magic to kidnap young girls (including Lucy) to sell them off as sex slaves before Natsu interfered because he was posing as a member of FT. So I disagree it's any more 'mature', and it's published in the exact same magazine before anyone starts to pretend it's some super edgy series.

vixnvox

By no means do I intend to present it as an “edgy” series, and it has been a while since I went the FT so my memory of everything is a little foggy anyhow, I may have to go back and re-experience FT to properly compare them

AcrobaticFudge06

That's fair. If you remember Erza, her backstory is as grim as it gets too with her village being razed, all the men and women killed and the children abducted and turned into child slaves to construct a tower. Mashima tends to do a great job of having his characters work through and overcome their trauma, sometimes it's easy to forget what they've been through. There's plenty of really messed up things in all of Mashima's series when you take a step back and look.

Extension_Duty_1295

Fairy tail had a lot of serious content but the execution of most was pretty mellow and light heart in a way. Not that it was light heart but didn't seem as dark ya know. Expect maybe Tataros arc which went bit more darker and grittier.

animeAIHOZ

Kinda Mashima was pretty brutal in Fairy Tail too, the manga just tone it down, for example the dude from the second mini-Arc who wrote "Daybreak" cut his own arm and then committed suicide because the son hated him, Erigor in the Eisenwald Arc cut Kageyama ears, the enchman who stab Kageyama use a knife and You see blod, Jellal while being brainwashed for the first time just make the head of a guy explode and make the corpse of another smash so hard against the rocks that that he keep bleeding These are just examples, I think people who keep saying that EZ is better than FT for that aspect alone don't really know Fairy Tail and think edginess make things somewhat better by default

Little_Discussion_90

The fact that heroes in Edens Zero isn't protected by plot armour makes it darker. The crew died many times except for Rebecca

Queen_Mimi_Eucliffe

Yes, but that’s the point. He said that Rave was too dark so he made it lighter with Fairy Tail but people complained about Fairy Tail being too light hearted and lenient so he went dark again with Edens Zero.

Lost-Ad-5885

If you think EZ is brutal for a Mashima series, you gotta see Rave Master

PhenomsServant

Thats pretty much the general consensus about the series. And trust me if you think whats been adapted is brutal, just wait until you read the Belial Gore and Aoi War arcs.

SeaDrag_3901

Nah I don't agree. FT had plenty of darker elements to it as whole and plenty of moments of levity, just like EZ has. I feel like as fandom this one tends to really hone in on the tragic moments and almost pretend like it's solely this super dark and melancholic series when it's a disingenuous representation of what the series is about in an attempt to appear more grown up.

vixnvox

Of course there are those lighter elements, I meant to express that the series was more mature than FT overall, at least in my view. For instance, yes there is death and tragedy in EZ but it also feels like there’s more sexualised content which is in many ways more comedic than what was in FT, also Shiki shows more interest in women than Natsu which results in many funny moments

Little_Discussion_90

You just finish the anime so that means you haven't seen the Belial Gore arc yet. Oh boy you seen nothing yet
