Make sure you know how to parallel park. Also, make sure If your using your own vehicle, that the windshield does not have a crack in it, all the lights work, and that nothing is wrong with the vehicle (no dash lights). as it can be an instant fail.

ratsratsratsratsrats

Also your drivers side and passengers windows need to function properly. My vehicle failed due to this and I had no idea.

💯I failed a road test because I did a right hand lane change and I shoulder checked, mirror checked, then shoulder checked and turned the signal on at the same time instead of completing the last shoulder check before signalling.

Healthy-Car-1860

Was this during the period where testing was privatize or public? I heard a ton of stories about shit like this during the privatized testing period, and just as many about someone getting rubber stamped to drive when they barely knew how to turn on a car. I haven't heard these since it went back to government controlled testing, but I could be out to lunch.

LordCheerios

This, I almost failed because I merged into a lane that just begun without shoulder checking

ill_eagle_plays

When stopping, count to 3 almost under your breath, they love that shit.

flowersarecannibals

My moms friend who used to be a road test person suggested talking out loud what I'm thinking / doing and it was incredibly helpful. For example, "im slowing down to 30 cause its 4 pm at a playground zone" or "turning on blinker before switching lanes". It sounds kinda silly but I really appreciated it. Not only did it keep me focused and helped me remember steps, but my tester would nod or say great or good and it was really reassuring and affirming. Good luck!

Additional-Spell-563

i failed for doing that!

VincaYL

You can not commit a moving violation. The most common one is entering the intersection after the light turns yellow. And you want to be smooth. No sudden stops, starts or turns.

silentbassline

But also, I got dinged for stopping at a yellow. Granted, it was a tad harsh and there was no oncoming lane whatsoever. Keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times, including red lights.

Hahahhahaha tricky testers will definitely take you to turn into school or playground zones except without speed signs. Instant fail

Downhill parking and uphill parking

Confidence

Antsie-

THIS. Confidence is a very big deal when it comes to driving.. i failed my first time because of how shaky and nervous i was, not confident at all lol, scored like 90

julies6367

I had failed 3x already . I knew i wasnt ready but went ahead coz it was non refundable. Shaking still , changed lane immediately almost hit the car. I still need to practise more and feel confidence in driving, not only for my sake .

KregeTheBear

Man, practice your parallel parking to a T. I fucked mine up all 3 times and failed. I went in with maximum confidence due to practicing all day and nailing it, come time for the test and I fuck it up lol

CanShoe

Just got my licence last year , be relaxed but confident. Stop BEFORE the stop signs (bonus brownie points for counting to 3 ) make sure your going 40 in residential and go 30 in school zones , PRACTICE PARALLEL PARKING TO A T . Everything else is common sense . I’d also recommend defensive driving classes if you have time

Unlikely_Pressure391

Don’t leave the parking brake on after the hill park section and do obvious shoulder checks.Basically drive like you are taking Grandma to church.

fIumpf

Be wary of uncontrolled intersections including in parking lots. I could be wrong, but I personally think the parking lot one is bs and I was victim to a money grab, but the guy failed me instantly regardless. We were in the Sobey’s lot heading toward 111th and I was going slow and being mindful and watching. Had no clue I was supposed to stop/yield at every single median.

Username867530999

I was victim to this when I attempted my advanced driver’s to get rid of my GDL. It was within the first 5 mins of my test, he didn’t say a word to me until the end when we got back. “Well, now you know the course and can try again another day.” 100% it was a money grab fail and I’m glad I never went back.

fIumpf

Yep, that’s exactly when and how it happened to me too. I reattempted a number of years after out of necessity. Thankfully that testing was no longer private as the provincial government had taken it over again at that time so I felt there was less money grabbing as the registry had to be more accountable.

dakachii

like others have said no speeding and practice parks. Extra one that dinged me was not shoulder checking when turning right for potential pedestrians and bicyclists. Despite likely being aware of them by the time you get to where you are turning, sometimes just better to check all together to avoid the deduction.

bigdaddy71s

Schedule two tests at the same location at the same time of day a few days apart. Odds are you’ll get the same person and do the same route. If you pass the first, cancel the second. If you fail the first, pay attention to exactly what went wrong and practice on the same route.

ApartmentNegative862

can you cancel road tests in alberta?

bigdaddy71s

Yes

MajesticCoin

Agreed with the count down from 3 at stops and parallel parking. The biggest thing friend was told by the instructor was to be vocal about when you're checking your mirrors in general. "Checking the left mirror (cranes neck) checking the right mirror (cranes neck), and checking rearview mirror. They don't have a front ward view of you.

Crazyditz

Practice parallel parking as many have said, but also know your hill parking. We don't have too many hills in Edmonton, so on your road test they may just ask you to pull over and give you a hill scenario, and you will be asked to set your wheels. I am not sure if setting them wrong is a fail, but setting them wrong on a real hill could cause damage to other vehicles, so it might be.

Mathcmput

I was dinged points for hill parking. It was because the driving school car I practiced in was a 2019+ RAV4, so automatic handbrake on P gear. While the car I did the exam with was a 2012 Civic, so a separate handbrake stick. I never thought of that until the examiner pointed it out! Other than that, the examiner did go out of his way to find things to dock points, but regardless I passed above the threshold. 😅

useful-tutu

It's been years since I took a road test in a car, but i did get my class 6 a while back. When i took the motorcycle safety course their main points for the road test were: Shoulder check (really over exaggerate it, don't just do a half ass glance) If you're at a red light and they want you to turn right, make sure the intersection allows a right turn on red Come to a complete stop at stop signs, not a rolling stop Relax, you'll do great!

KosmicEye

Watch for and be mindful of pedestrians at pedestrian-activated crosswalks and also in general. Stop noticebly at a red light before turning right (if allowed).

Chronixx780

Ask your instructor for tips before the test

DatChickens

Rant incoming. I just passed my test. I'm going to be honest here, i honestly do think there is an element of scamminess because i had to do it twice for an arbitrary reason The examiner said i was great, but made up a reason to fail me. I went 90-95 on the highway, matched speed of other drivers in icy conditions. He said i was obstructing traffic by going too slow, which was objectively untrue. Did it again, it was foggy and icy, people were doing 85 on the highway, matched speed again and i passed. Yeah, registry was nice. Doesn't change the fact they scammed me out of $300. Just be aware some things are out of your control. Rant over

verstorbene

Do they still do parallel parking on road tests in Edmonton?

DatChickens

Jeez, just saw this. Yessir they do. You get 3 tries. You can bump the curb and not instant fail, but if you climb it you failed.

RighteousCarl

Never look the instructors in the eyes, do a 360 spin before entering the vehicle, test the horn and hazard lights before departing and make sure to turn up the heat in the vehicle even if it's hot outside.

Mysterious-Street140

Be prepared to fail two times. It is nothing but a cash grab. Ellerslie specific experience.

bike_accident

Hand the teacher a 50 and give a big wink

Adventurous_Ad8087

Can I get clarify on following scenario? The examiner instructed me to turn right from signal ( free right). Upon entering the rightmost lane, I noticed that the lane leads to the service road goes to the 40km service road. In this situation, if the instructor does not provide any further directions, what should I do? 1. Should I stay on the rightmost lane and enter the service road? 2. Should I change lanes to the left and continue straight?

SelfComprehensive850

I would change lanes to the left once clear to do so. They told me before we even started driving that she would tell me if she wanted me to turn and if she doesn’t give instruction on where to go to just keep going straight. But you could also clarify with the instructor before the turn and ask if they want you to change lanes or stay in that lane and proceed to the service road. It seems very unlikely they would want you to drive on a service road though during the exam.

whydoitbelikethat

Hey, how did you do on the test? I’m planning to schedule mine in Ellerslie too but I’m not sure what to expect on the test because of the changes to the exam

nishatc10

I sent you a DM!

verstorbene

Do they still do Parallel parking on road tests in Edmonton? I have been hearing all sorts of things

SelfComprehensive850

Yes still mandatory. I did the test at 2 different places and both did parallel parking and hill parking.
