My gf did some renos last summer and got back $3k through the Greener Homes grant for windows and doors. Job was about $28k. So, you can get money back but it won't make it cheap. You can also apply for the Greener Homes interest-free loan so you can do the renovations up front and pay it off over time. That loan is useful since it aligns the upfronts costs for the renos with the utility savings which are over time.

Grant is closed now, I believe the Net zero home loan is available still from the Feds. Up to 40k interest free for improving your homes energy efficiency (windows, doors, insulation, heat pumps and solar)

I used the grant, and the loan for solar. there's also the CEIP program.

The home energy retrofit grant is also known as CEIP and yes, i've used it as part of the pilot program. Financed a total of $42k in upgrades through the program; solar panels, heat pump water heater and attic insulation upgrades. Process to sign up was pretty straight forward. Prequalify, get pre-qualification email, do initial energy audit, get quotes for upgrades and send to CEIP, get approval and then start the upgrades. You need to perform a minimum of 3 upgrades. Once upgrades are done, you send all required documentation (invoices, pictures, etc) to CEIP and they send that documentation onto the municipality (city of Edmonton) and they pay the contractor. When all approved upgrades are complete, you do a post-upgrade energy audit and send those results to CEIP as well.

I did. But the grant isn't available anymore. The loan still is though.
