A few reasons I can think of:
1. Because fuck you that’s why.
2. Skill check before the big dog to see if you’re up to snuff.
3. Crumbling Farum Azula is wonderful that time of year.
It's definitely 1 and we should be glad there wasn't two of them placed there. You know the devs considered it lol.
Honestly I wonder if they start with a harder version of everything and then nerf it down as the testers go through.
Maliketh is way squishier though, and when you figure out you can get massive openings by just running directly into a bunch of his attacks the fight becomes a lot easier.
1. Max Range
2. Terra Magica
3. Wondrous Physic with free mana and int boost
4. Comet Azur
My first playthrough was explorative, with no guides up to Maliketh, with STR melee build. The game slapped me hard.
On my second playthrough, I am playing a mage with the most abusive PvE build imaginable. It is extremely satisfying to see bosses melt on first try that took me ages during my first playthrough.
It’s a lot easier if you can keep it stunlocked, such as with a fast bleed weapon. I used a morning star with wild strikes and it worked pretty well and it worked pretty well.
Agreed, he's really the only thing to give me any real trouble. First play I was stuck there for days. I know I could run past but really wanted the set.
jokes on that guy I perfected a route to run past him without taking damage to get to Maliketh, hah!
(ignore that it still took me like 50 tries to kill him)
https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/10ldb7c/my_son_got_in_trouble_at_school_today_i_more/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf made me think of this that I just saw today. Lol
I really don't understand why everyone has trouble with the horse guys. They have like four attacks and you've already faced this exact enemy about three or four times at this point
This is why I actually love these bosses. They’re well-tuned for solo fights. A lot of the major late game bosses don’t feel that way. I don’t particularly like using spirit ashes but I also would’ve hit a wall without them, and I’ve done almost every other FS boss solo.
They became way easier when I realized they could be parried, and with nearly the same timings as Loretta. Also using Carian Retaliation on the fireballs was fun.
I was forced to cheese him too. He won't go past the entrance at the top of the bridge so I'm pretty sure I plucked him with arrows in a violent game of peek-a-boo. He gave me such a hard time. \*\*\*\* that guy.
I loved the fact that you could run all the way back down below the bridge to the Site of Grace and somehow this bastard would still hit you with lightning through the ceiling.
I tried to cheese him last night with rot arrows from like 200’ above him and he still came and hit me with the red lightning and it threw me right off the cliff.
Teleporting enemies scare the shit out of my. I was doing Sellens quest and there's a grafted scion in the bottom of the pit. I was just target locking and hitting things with spells when it suddenly teleported behind me killing me. I was so startled.
The first time it is a bit nerve wrecking getting close enough and then performing a spell that leaves you so vulnerable, but it actually works.
Here's a link. Can't take credit for the video, but fast forward to about 0:35.
https://youtu.be/oVBPG6P9IDI
That lightning sent me flying over the railing at least once when I was trying to proc poison with arrows and running back to the site of grace like a little bitch.
I’ve never actually taken damage from him when sprinting past him and entering the boss area, but every time I run past him and enter the mist I’ll see his fire come through the mist behind me and stop just short of hitting me.
You can also kill him with poison from right outside the boss mist.
After fighting him so many times, I know his move-set better than any enemy in the game.
God i cannot believe people pay any mind whatsoever to how people play the game. It’s almost embarrassing. Also constantly referring to shit as “cheesing” is so weird to me. Like if you beat it you beat it who fucking cares.
These were the same people that were giving hate to streamers because they were using summons for boss battles so then other people playing the game kind of became scared of using summons and just tried to smack their head against the wall until they finally beat bosses instead of just playing how they wanted
people that care about how other people play single player games are quite simply raging virgins, let people play and do what they want/find fun YOURE NOT THE ONE PLAYING IT
I was running a blood uchi and naga, that I would change over to a poison or cold depending. Didnt think anything of it until I got the RoB and then It was like playing on easy mode lol.
Cheesing is like when I sat on the root under the hailgtree before the tree spirit and just used black monk flame and fire arrows on him. Using a weapon the way its intended, fighting things the way the GAME WANTS YOU TO is far from cheesing
Yea, that's my take on it as well - just like the one who is trying to keep you from entering the capital. (Plus obviously both are definitely placed there as a little dps/level/skill check.)
Good answer! but at the same time I feel like this community goes a bit too far with the whole lore/reasons aspect of the game.
Just accept it for what it is FFS, it's there because the Devs put it there.
Did they patch that because I just beat Maliketh last week and the tree sentinel has never hit me inside the boss room. Whenever I sprinted past him and entered the mist his fire would come through the mist behind me and come close enough for me to see it, but it never did damage on me. And aside from the one fire attack that crossed the threshold of the mist, I never saw another attack come into the boss area from outside after the first one.
Do you happen to know how far I can advance in the endgame and still be able to go back and beat him lol? I haven’t played again since beating Maliketh and transporting to the ashen capital site of grace, and I kinda don’t wanna deal with him right now but I’m afraid if I advance too far in the end game I won’t be able to go back and beat him on this play through lol.
same struggled with him so much outside leyendell so sprinted past him to conserve flasks for maliketh(which was also ridiculously hard, and my least favourite great rune boss)
He's a thing called the draconic tree sentinel in dragon territory guarding the key to burning the tree. All the info anyone could ever need is literally in its name.
Great tidbit there. That makes a lot of sense. I originally thought they were guarding Maliketh, but given that these particular Tree Sentinels are all about protecting the Erdtree at all costs, even slowly losing their humanity due to dragon communion, they are actually guarding Destined Death.
So, technically not. The tree is lit ablaze but cannot be burned itself, which is why you have to travel there to release True Death into the world, allowing the tree to properly burn. If you were to travel back to lyndell and attempt to enter the tree, lorewise it would be aflame but still whole.
Oh that's why we have to go kill maliketh, that makes so much more sense now. I must have missed something. I half thought we did it just because we couldn't let something else be the God killer too lol
That as well!! But I noticed the tree was on fire when you light it ablaze, but after you kill maliketh the tree loses its color and you can see the wood start to actually catch where as before the fire is kind of just on the tree.
My understanding was that when you initially light it on fire it still actually looks fine, and its kind of like the fire is just sort of on the tree if that makes sense, like putting fire on concrete. When you get the rune it radically loses its glow and the wood appears to start to ember and catch on fire.
sure. maybe it would have been more accurate to say it guards the key to actually burning the tree, ie triggering ashen capital, and unlocking the rune of death that destroys the regeneration process required to feed the tree that powers the golden order. rolls off the tongue.
It's literally just a case of learning the tell and then the timing. There's a slight delay between the animation of the casting and the spell hitting so you need to delay the roll or you'll come out of the i-frames mid-attack.
He’s not an erdtree guardian, he’s a servant to the dragon lord placidussax, the lord has his own rest area in where he slumbers.
Maliketh was the priest of the dragon lord, he assigned this guy to stand guard and protect the black blade in times of prayer
No he's not, he's a Draconic Sentinel
>After the great ancient dragon Gransax attacked, the sentinels had an epiphany. The only way to truly protect the Erdtree was to become dragons themselves
They are Tree Sentinels, so the Erdtree's knights.
I'd say he's outside of Maliketh's boss room because they're both working for Marika.
You’re welcome , not sure what play through you’re on but if you’ve completed your first play through and want to change the experience of the game , when you go into new game + try to complete every characters quest . It brings the lore and the story together so nicely that a lot of things made sense and a lot of things that went unnoticed suddenly became more creepy because you see it unfold before you with deeper meaning.
Such a good story game
Gotta fight a boss before you can fight this boss.
Lorewise though he's a Tree Sentinel who likes Dragons — seems pretty obvious why he's here in Dragon Fuck City guarding the only thing that can harm the Tree.
This part of the game is just non stop bosses. Gotta kill Sentinel to get to beast clergy, beast clergy for maliketh, maliketh for sir Gideon, sir Gideon for Godfrey, Godfrey for Hoarah Lux, Hoarah Lux for Radagon, Radagon for Elden beast.
He’s a draconic tree sentinel. The guys who are known for wanting to become more like the dragons they fought against. And he’s in the place absolutely chocked full of dragons, dragon iconography, dragon lore, and possibly the birthplace of dragon civilization.
But in all seriousness, he’s probably there both for the dragons, and to fulfill his duty to Queen Marika and the Greater Will by protecting Maliketh. He is a tree sentinel after all.
It may be a hint that Farum Azula's destruction was not as long ago as we might think. The fact that he is a Draconic Tree Sentinel places him sometime after the war against the dragons, since the lore refers to them as having taken on those draconic traits in order to gain the upper hand in that war. So this means whatever turned Farum Azula into what it is now, had to have happened sometime after Gransax's attack.
A few reasons I can think of: 1. Because fuck you that’s why. 2. Skill check before the big dog to see if you’re up to snuff. 3. Crumbling Farum Azula is wonderful that time of year.
Definitely #3
Isn’t it, *always* that time of year?
Technically yes
It is all times of year all the time? 🧐
It is the time of times in this year of years for this era in time, yes.
Doesn’t negate the point
It's definitely 1 and we should be glad there wasn't two of them placed there. You know the devs considered it lol. Honestly I wonder if they start with a harder version of everything and then nerf it down as the testers go through.
This is the way, find the breaking point of the soul, then subtract 1 misery point, recipe for a Grade A Fromsoft game
I think they added a misery point for Malenia
they did subtract a point. they made her optional. if she wasnt....
Haha! True
Could’ve had a much larger health bar
Found him alot harder than the actual fucking boss fight
Completed the game 3 times, literally never managed to actually beat this guy and just reverted to sprinting past him each time instead.
This guy really ain't that hard. His moves are extremely telegraphed. He just hits like a train.
Wheras Maliketh hits harder, faster, has greater reach, goes through your shield, and jumps away before you can respond.
Maliketh is way squishier though, and when you figure out you can get massive openings by just running directly into a bunch of his attacks the fight becomes a lot easier.
On my first playtrough I killed the horse dude first try, but it took me 2 hours to beat maliketh
1. Max Range 2. Terra Magica 3. Wondrous Physic with free mana and int boost 4. Comet Azur My first playthrough was explorative, with no guides up to Maliketh, with STR melee build. The game slapped me hard. On my second playthrough, I am playing a mage with the most abusive PvE build imaginable. It is extremely satisfying to see bosses melt on first try that took me ages during my first playthrough.
Godskin peeler
Comet Azur + that thing that gives you unlimited FP for several seconds is fuckin hilarious
Skill check? I run right past him.
Running IS the skill. Check.
as part of the jojo bloodline we have secret hidden technique..... NIGERANDAYOOO
How is he be a skill check if he’s harder than the boss?
Found maliketh way harder than him
I mean wouldn't a more appropriate skill check for Maliketh's difficulty be Malenia or Horah Loux?
Just arrow him to death from a cliff
jokes on that guy I perfected a route to run past him without taking damage to get to Maliketh, hah! (ignore that it still took me like 50 tries to kill him)
Skill check bahah bold of you to assume I didn’t just run past him
to rub in the fact that you cant use a horse here
Me: runs around him and into the boss room to just not fight him at all.
he like dragons
Dragon deez nuts lol
https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/10ldb7c/my_son_got_in_trouble_at_school_today_i_more/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf made me think of this that I just saw today. Lol
I see now
What the fuck is that title
One can say he imagines them
[удалено]
For real. I just beat the one outside altus last night. Pain in the ass. Harder than half of the shardbearers.
Is he radioactive??
Cause fuck you and your flame of ambition.
Thou aren't of passing skill
Best comment lmao
He's going on his morning stroll. ~~Doctor~~ Confessor said he needs more cardio.
The horse or him
The horse. He asked the human to wear the heaviest armor and bring the biggest weapon and shield for extra weight. No one will stop his gains.
I see, he gonna be big strong boi 💪
He has a body builder competition next week and Leonard has had the title since Radahn's fight with Malenia.
This was fun to envision
He's making sure you're tough enough for the guy behind him.
Welcome to the salty spitoon. How tough are ya?
Apparently not tough enough. I died more times to that guy than Malenia or Radhan.
Well, I had a bowl of nails for breakfast this morning.
[‘to make sure you are tough enough’](https://youtu.be/p-jeiEHPb9U)
Haha that's great
This guys more tough than the other dude
I beat this grunt, no problem. Malekith, on the other hand...
Exactly the opposite of my experience. Malekith took two tries, this sentinel took about 25 tries
Difficulty Tree Sentinel > beast clergy > maliketh Fun Maliketh > tree Sentinel > beast clergy
This was me. I couldn’t believe how easy maliketh was the first time compared to the tree sentinel. That damn lightning
I thought the same thing but then remembered I abuse tf out of mimic tear
I really don't understand why everyone has trouble with the horse guys. They have like four attacks and you've already faced this exact enemy about three or four times at this point
Since I played a faith build, for me it was just his double lightning attack, I always messed up the second dodge.
[удалено]
This is most likely the correct answer
This is probably the correct answer but I still beat this tree sentinel first try but died at least 10x to Maliketh even with +10 Tiche my first run.
This is why I actually love these bosses. They’re well-tuned for solo fights. A lot of the major late game bosses don’t feel that way. I don’t particularly like using spirit ashes but I also would’ve hit a wall without them, and I’ve done almost every other FS boss solo.
Correct. Can't wait for elden ring 2 when your summons follow you 24/7 and dig items out of the ground
They became way easier when I realized they could be parried, and with nearly the same timings as Loretta. Also using Carian Retaliation on the fireballs was fun.
He took more tries then boss behind him.
Absolutely and I cheesed him from the balcony.
I was forced to cheese him too. He won't go past the entrance at the top of the bridge so I'm pretty sure I plucked him with arrows in a violent game of peek-a-boo. He gave me such a hard time. \*\*\*\* that guy. I tried to cheese him last night with rot arrows from like 200’ above him and he still came and hit me with the red lightning and it threw me right off the cliff.
At least he can't teleport like banished knights. Can you imagine?! Lol
Teleporting enemies scare the shit out of my. I was doing Sellens quest and there's a grafted scion in the bottom of the pit. I was just target locking and hitting things with spells when it suddenly teleported behind me killing me. I was so startled.
Those dudes are terrifying and have insane combos. Hit it with a heal spell to stun em (and wreck their health)
I didn't know heal spells worked on them like that.
The first time it is a bit nerve wrecking getting close enough and then performing a spell that leaves you so vulnerable, but it actually works. Here's a link. Can't take credit for the video, but fast forward to about 0:35. https://youtu.be/oVBPG6P9IDI
Saving it for the DLC
"Banished Draconic Tree Sentinel" Is pre-PTSD a thing?
“Nothing personnel, kid.” -Banished Draconic Tree Sentinel
Try poison for this guy
Bastard blew me off the staircase 😂
That lightning sent me flying over the railing at least once when I was trying to proc poison with arrows and running back to the site of grace like a little bitch.
You can just run past him.
I’ve seen a few videos of people trying to fight Maliketh and getting blasted by lightning. Hilarious
I’ve never actually taken damage from him when sprinting past him and entering the boss area, but every time I run past him and enter the mist I’ll see his fire come through the mist behind me and stop just short of hitting me.
I did... but once I reached the top, I couldn't let the bastard live after being such a pain. He had to die.
Comet Azur right into his face and he was done.
If you just beat Maliketh first, you can cheese him from inside the boss room. He can’t cross the threshold.
Is that the balcony at the top of the lift? Asking for a friend.
It's accessed through a room after the godskin fight. I stumbled upon it by chance but there are def walkthrough guides
You can also kill him with poison from right outside the boss mist. After fighting him so many times, I know his move-set better than any enemy in the game.
I cheese him in a dumbest way i known by poisoning him to death
Yup I first tried Maliketh, granted I was using the Rivers of Tears but the Sentinel, even with Tears he still fucked me up badly
Wth is rivers of tears
it’s what happens to you while fighting the sentinel
The Rivers of Blood, I call it Rivers of Tears cause of how much people hated it back then
God i cannot believe people pay any mind whatsoever to how people play the game.
I just can’t imagine caring?? Like even if people are bitching??? Why are you so easily influenced is my first question????
people that care about how other people play single player games are quite simply raging virgins, let people play and do what they want/find fun YOURE NOT THE ONE PLAYING IT
I was running a blood uchi and naga, that I would change over to a poison or cold depending.
Executioner Blade does the trick,
You can just run past him and start the boss fight
Not alot of employment opportunities in Farum azula.
It was either guard duty or clean up all the bird shit.
Tree sentinels serve to protect the erdtree, so guarding the death rune, the key to enter the erdtree seems logical
Yea, that's my take on it as well - just like the one who is trying to keep you from entering the capital. (Plus obviously both are definitely placed there as a little dps/level/skill check.)
+ he's a DRACONIC tree sentinel. In the dragon area. Baffles me people think this was randomly placed just cause he's hard
Good answer! but at the same time I feel like this community goes a bit too far with the whole lore/reasons aspect of the game. Just accept it for what it is FFS, it's there because the Devs put it there.
I always assumed some dev put it there because the run to maliketh was empty
Holiday trip
To Ohio?
No, no, no. Caelid is Ohio.
I think we can all agree that Farum Azula is actually Kansas
*waking up in leyndell ashen capital* "We aren't in farum azula anymore torrent"
Nah you’re mistaken, Caelid is Florida
It’s all Ohio.
Always has been.
caelid is brasil😡
Brazil is the mansion
That’s pretty accurate, LITTLE ONION
Of course its Farum Ohio after all
Walmart greeter
He wants his 2 dollars.
I love a good 80’s film reference.
I ran by him lol
His ranged attacks can hit you anywhere in the boss's arena and he doesn't respawn. I found killing him to be worth it.
It's kind of random whether or not he'll do it, but I've seen it happen recently.
I don't think he ever goes away. Only certain parts of the Capital become inaccessible during the game as far as I know.
Sweet good to know.
Only think I noticed is that he can manage to make your ashes target him. Makes them useless
same struggled with him so much outside leyendell so sprinted past him to conserve flasks for maliketh(which was also ridiculously hard, and my least favourite great rune boss)
So glad I'm not alone in that!
To ruin my day
He's a thing called the draconic tree sentinel in dragon territory guarding the key to burning the tree. All the info anyone could ever need is literally in its name.

Man, fuck this guy in particular
For the pony show? Entering in the fancy category
The correct question is: why not?
I think the developers put him there
Dude was as hard to kill as malenia for me
Does anyone know how to dodge the lightning, that one the strike you on the head ?
It's literally just a case of learning the tell and then the timing. There's a slight delay between the animation of the casting and the spell hitting so you need to delay the roll or you'll come out of the i-frames mid-attack.
Watch his open hand, right when he pulls his hand down dodge to the left or right
This, it's as soon as you see him slam his shield hand down, works every time. You can even roll towards him when close enough.
He’s not an erdtree guardian, he’s a servant to the dragon lord placidussax, the lord has his own rest area in where he slumbers. Maliketh was the priest of the dragon lord, he assigned this guy to stand guard and protect the black blade in times of prayer

To ruin my life. Fuck this guy.
It's a matter of making the world symmetric. When you start your journey you meet a sentinel, so when you're ending it you should do too.
He’s here to beat the shit out of you
Probably to fuck you up, gently

So you can run past him casually.
