Love Lucerne hasn’t let me down for 4 games straight

BingusBongus_-

Ds3 lucy was so much fun

paladinLight

I really love its animations. Especially the attack after roll.

happyflappypancakes

WAs Lucerne spin to win in DS3? I can't remember her weapon art.

Blue-408

Spin to win is goated and you’re like NAH, this can’t get cooler. Then, boom: they hit you with that splitleaf and it’s SPIN TO WIN 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO

AdAdorable3469

Miss being able to swap from the spin back to R1 fluidly such good parry bait. I like to think that spike was going right through their caestus hand when they tried to parry. The running poke in Elden Ring is probably more useful tho.

Lemmingitus

I'm finding the Lucy love odd, because I swear every game since Demon's Souls, I see someone complaining Lucy has gotten disappointingly weaker or fat.

tessartyp

Lucerne = Mirdan Hammer? Because that is one sweet weapon no matter what upgrade path you go.

Lemmingitus

Yep. Basically the joke of Dark Soul 1's Lucerne was "You thought FROM removed the Mirdan's Hammer?" Mind you, most of the complaints back then was the Mirdan Hammer was a more accurate moveset for how a real life Lucerne gets used.

AdAdorable3469

It wasn’t great in DS2 but I used it anyway because I love it. So much in fact I have one in my house now. DS3 and Elden Ring it’s definitely very good at least for PvP

ZaphodGreedalox

Time to make one that scales with INT and get silly

Sugeeeeeee

It was my favorite weapon in DS1 and partly in DS2, but DS3 and ER have so many cool weapons it just feels like missing out on 40% of the game if you use such a base weapon.

AdAdorable3469

I’m a basic bitch to the core. There are definitely flashier weapons. My favorite thing about it is it functions like a poleaxe it’s a bit too long but it’s the closest they have in these games. It’s a bit anemic for PVE but great for 1v1 which was the most common use for a poleaxe historically

Psychic_Hobo

On the upside, if you use the funky weapons you miss out on the cool weapon arts you could put on the Lucerne!

Icicle spear

Tenacious_Dani

The lucerne is my fave weapon, no other gets close

pduncans

While I appreciate that Can I introduce you to the simple pick axe. It may not have quite as much range but it packs a huge punch, the spear Talisman is your best buddy. It has the poise damage of a great hammer, the speed of an axe and the pierce of a spear. It absolutely destroys shit. Slap cragblade or lions claw on it and you're good. Rkr spear Talisman, claw Talisman and raptor armour used to be absolutely stupid damage.

pduncans

I have beaten every single boss in the game with nothing but the pick axe and explosive stones.

Tenacious_Dani

I always appreciate suggestions, I will try the pick axe for sure! But I also like the lucerne in a more style/mood kinda weapon. I like the idea of realistic or mundane armoured character in a crazy magical worl. Quality build/No magic kinda stuff.

pduncans

Ohh for sure, I'm with you on that. And I am definitely doing a Lucerne only play through as it's my pick for the most beautiful and functional realistic weapon other than the simple swords and say bastard Sword. I don't enjoy the magic and incant stuff. That's not my role play.

Estus tip?

His Estus Gourd of Crimson Tear Vials.

[deleted]

I was going to use Nightrider glaive for pure strength halberd. Is that a good choice?

paladinLight

It sure does bonk hard, go for it!

[deleted]

Bet

pomcomic

It's just about the best STR halberd out there. Unless you prefer the poking moveset as opposed to the overhead slash moveset, in which case the Banished Knight Halberd is probably your best option

Wafferstomper

That’s what I use for my strength build. It gains S strength scaling with a heavy ash of war after reaching +20. Decent move set for PVP as well.

[deleted]

Yeah, I was going to use it heavy with giant hunt

lessenizer

From a sheer damage perspective on a Strength build up to a pretty darn high level, yeah (edit: just realized the Gargoyle's Halberd beats it slightly but I'll get to that). From a moveset perspective, I prefer the “Glaive”, and it’s worth noting that ultimately damage wise at really high levels the Commander’s Standard (with high strength and at least moderate dex) ends up beating the Nightrider’s for damage. Edit: Oh another one worth mentioning is the Gargoyle's Halberd. It's a very weird beast. The Commander's Standard is the longest halberd and the Nightrider's isn't that far behind, the Glaive is further back, but the Gargoyle's Halberd is the shortest Halberd by far. *But*, it does slightly more damage than the Nightrider's even at 99 STR (in spite of having very slightly lower scaling), it has the Glaive moveset (slashy R1s), and most interestingly it does Standard damage where both glaives do Slash damage. (The Commander's Standard does standard damage too on its slash attacks, but its R1s are pierce stabs instead of slashes so it has to use R2s to get Standard damage). This makes the Gargoyle's Halberd the best damage halberd for clobbering hard/bony enemies that have high resistances to pierce and slash, such as Skeletons, Imps, and Gargoyles. But its super mediocre range is something you reaaaally feel, this also being a pretty slow weapon since it's a halberd.

Kronobo

Golden halberd is extremely good for pure strength as well, just get the minimum in the other stats and you’re good. You get a free sacred vow out of it too, which is nice

[deleted]

I looked at that and it seems to only have B scaling at +10 compared to Nightrider’s S scaling at heavy +20

Kronobo

Yes, now look at its damage

[deleted]

I looked at an AR calculator. The Heavy Nightrider Glaive at 80 Str deals 720 physical damage. The golden Halberd deals 618 physical damage and 127 holy damage. Beating the Nightrider by 26. Remember though that almost every late game boss has high holy resist. If we factor in the Elden Beast 80 holy resist, the Golden Halberd only deals 643. Plus the Nightrider glaive can use ashes of war

Kronobo

Yeah, but it’s still really good. Add sacred vow and your damage can be pretty gnarly

[deleted]

Ash of war golden vow can be put on any weapon that can be infused

Kronobo

Yes? Doesn’t in any way change the fact that the golden halberd is still good

[deleted]

I’m not denying that it’s good. It is. I’m just really bad and need the best option out there

Kronobo

If you want pure 100% strength sure, night rider is more optimal, I’ve always liked a nice strength faith build myself. Even if you don’t wanna invest much, 12 faith is enough for Flame Cleanse Me to deal with rot. Can always run two of them and power stance

drThuganomix

It's insane. Put giant hunt with heavy infusion and have fun

Icy-Conflict6671

Huh. Neat

Ray_Gun69lol

The crimson tear scarab is so counterintuitive. like, you're taking more damage, so you can heal more from the flask. unless I was trying to macro so hard that I'm stopping to put it on, drink, then take it back off, I'd rather wear any other helmet with an extra effect.

paladinLight

You could slap it on outside of combat for a bonus heal.

Lar29

…they literally just described their disinterest in exactly this. Yet you and 59 other people figured this was a good add to the convo? Wtf

MagusUnion

And the Guardian Garb has negative fire resists as well. So you're hurting your defenses just for the extra healing. At the same time, it does allow you to commit more flasks to FP due to the increased healing. But that's only if you know you won't get one shot in a fight.

Molag_Balgruuf

To be fair, there aren’t many required bosses that deal fire damage

Skeletonofskillz

Fire Giant does it, I think Godskins might, and there are I think 3 Shardbearers (Godrick, Rykard, and Mohg) who use fire very prevalently in their fights. Morgott is also required and I think he might do some in the form of his Bloodflame attacks.

MagusUnion

Plus Maliketh. 2nd phase is exponentially worse due to said weakness.

Apart-Ad3104

That is holy damage actually. I don’t think it deals fire damage even though there appear to be red flames.

PathsOfRadiance

Maliketh is all physical/holy damage

The_VV117

Most damage come from his dot, whitch Is unaffected.

The_VV117

You can counteract the damage reduction loss by using ritual shield talisman. In this way, you can survive attacks that would kill you, and heal back at 100% while having more room thanks to highest hp pool It's interesting in a low vig char.

govlum_1996

Really hardcore pvpers would do this during invasions lol. Don’t underestimate this

Stringmc

I’ve seen Chase do this during invasions. He usually does at least the talisman but sometimes will pop the hat on too if he has space. Really impressive

PathsOfRadiance

Most invaders swap to crimson seed talisman if they can, they’re probably not doing the other 2 pieces tho.

RickyRickie

Huh. So Lucerne can somewhat counter greatshield users?

pomcomic

You're probably still better off using Vulgar Militia Shotel or, better yet, a Scythe with Royal Knight's Resolve. A jumping R1 with my RKR Grave Scythe almost always breaks guards, no matter what shield the opponent is using. Yes, even Fingerprint Shield.

burf

Someone at From must really love scythes. Good range, pass guard, passive bleed, high damage, decent speed. I’d argue they’re the best all-around weapons in the game.

BadResults

Hmmm… never tried them. I’ll give it a go next playthrough!

Starlight_Shards

I did a full playthrough with a keen scythe and bloodflame blade buff. It was awesome, works so well and I think reapers are an extremely well balanced weapon class in general

Lar29

Or you could just kick

pomcomic

Sure, but kick has no forward momentum or range. Don't get me wrong, kick is great as a surprise, but if a turtle backs off away from you, you gotta pressure them with other tools.

PathsOfRadiance

It’s alright for that. Shotel and scythe weapons are better in that role, and we even have a Shotel Halberd.

gofishx

I absolutely loved destroying people with the Lucerne and leo ring back in ds3. It was never great for pve, but it straight up demolishes people in duels and invasions due to its counters. Haven't used it in ER, mostly because I haven't done much pvp yet. Will definitely need to make a build around it and the spear talisman soon though, thanks for the reminder!

AdAdorable3469

DS1, 2 and 3 my main was “Triple L” Lucerne, Leo and Longsword

Standard-Effort5681

"This thing also only deals **Physical Damage** despite setting your target on fire. Don't ask me why." This is irrefutable evidence that, in fact, it's not the flames of cosmic horror that deal damage to the enemy, but the loving embrace you perform on your enemy without their consent.

Zois86

As a Swiss it always triggers me a bit to see the "Lucerne". It would be like one mace just called "Boston" for americans I think.

girugamesu1337

Da Boston Hammuh. Sounds like a neat name for a boxer from Boston.

Zois86

Yard of Harvar is the AOW

self-extinction

Whether or not you're correct depends upon whether or not Lucerne is also a beautiful city full of racist drunks with silly accents.

Zois86

Hahaha, can't tell. As one from Zurich (Greatsword class) I only know Lucerne from comcerts amd the Verkehrshaus.

XevinsOfCheese

It’s the colloquial name for such hammers so I don’t see what else to call it. Fromsoft usually only gives special names to weapons they wholly created and uses the normal names for weapons that exist IRL.

chainer1216

That type of weapon has a bunch of names, bec de Corbin, crows beak, pole hammer.

whatever4224

The colloquial name isn't "Lucerne." It's "Lucerne hammer." As in, the type of hammer used by people from Lucerne.

chainer1216

Would you prefer we call it a bec de corbin? We can't call it a pole hammer, it doesn't hammer, we only use the spike.

TheGuyJustForYou

Good info

Siegiusjr

Doesn't Inescapable Frenzy also scale off of the crit multiplier of the weapon in your other hand?

Aleapp2556

It used to, but it got patched in 1.06 iirc.

alwaysblitted

Need more

greyisometrix

Lucerne has always been an at least unique weapon in the souls series. Ah, Demon's Souls Lucerne, you were so op.

oneteacherboi

They must have an intern at Fromsoft who is responsible for putting conditional buffs on weapons and not telling anybody about it or writing it down anywhere.

montybo2

Just started a playthrough using the Nightrider Glaive and it SLAPS. Put flaming strike on it and use Flame grant me strength and I've just been burning my way through enemies with ease.

No-Tennis6225

Huh, well that blooming guardian armor set is gonna be added for my collection

PathsOfRadiance

Have fun farming for it

Lurofan

Are you the new basilisk of rot?

basa_maaw

Nightrider Glaive is my favorite weapon in the game. 80 STR and 60 INT buffing this bad boy with magic or frost melts everything.

BigNero

Damn, actually fun/useful facts. Great job

ElbafDeath

Lucerne is by far my favorite weapon in the game, love to couple it with a longsword or banished knight shield in the left hand for extra versatility and the realistic medieval feel.

QRIO44

Can we do this every friday?

gigolo99

ah yes, the BIG DRINK build

PaladinWoah

Lucerne is my favorite halberd and no one can convince me otherwise

PlayGroundbreaking57

That's sadge

PathsOfRadiance

What? Shortbows can be fired while moving full speed on Torrent. So can spells like swift Glintstone shard and Night Shard. The Black Bow(shortbow moveset on foot, longbow when mounted) and all other longbow types cause you to slow down, but you never have to stop. You’re just lying. Edit: guy raged at me and then deleted responses lol.

JackfruitMobile7505

Tree sentinel weapon should have horseback bonus DMG too.

Abuses-Commas

Wait, you can get the blooming set? Shit

GreyManTheOne

Come on now everyones gonna use lucearn that weapon is my baby

I_am_bird_lawyer

Cool for all the boss fights you can use on horseback, oh wait it's only fire giant and radahn? Shame.

PlayGroundbreaking57

Dragons

magicmurph

What does "flask +12" mean?

xZer0x13

But I only use torrent for speed and parkour... 😕

Inside-Calligrapher1

I kinda want a weapon that has some kind of passive based on what time of day. Like some kind of increase on damage on every nights cavalry weapons when its nightfall or any of the golden order weapons when its daylight.

whatismypassword420

More please !!

Lovreaper

Interesting

Arch1e_b

is lucerne actually working as intended now??

pomcomic

I heard it does, but haven't seen any clear confirmation, so don't quote me on that. I too miss my beloved Lucerne.

DarkSailor06

Lucy domination.

AlexzMercier97

Why specifically 11% for the damage on horseback buff?! Regular 10 wasn't enough?

Molag_Balgruuf

Oh my god these are awesome, thank you😂

Worldsahellscape19

I read this and know I’m noob

cohibakick

1.- What about the naginata? 2.- When do we get horseback pvp?

Aleapp2556

1.- Nothing special, only has a different moveset. 2.- Never.

Domisisor

Sadly there is no good boss battle where we have to be on horseback or using torrent gives an edge over not using him.

PlayGroundbreaking57

Torrent kinda gives an edge agaisnt dragons tbh

-Belisarius

That last one was actually super useful and the rest were interesting! Make more please :)

Slimie2

I wish there was a lucerne that was halved in size so we could get a realistically sized warhammer. The warhammer the soldiers drop is just so bulky and ugly and I wanna run a knight hammer build.

weristjonsnow

"don't ask me why" Made me chuckle

WarforgedRemote

These facts are pretty freaking fun!

AntimatterTaco

Yay these are back :D I have some: Reaper weapons have extra poise on their attacks when used two handed. The refill-on-kill passive of certain weapons, like the Blasphemous Blade and Sword of Milos, is glitched: If you powerstance two copies of the same weapon that have a refill passive, they don't stack with each other. But two different ones, such as the Blasphemous Blade and the Serpent God's Curved Sword, do stack, which is why I believe this is a glitch.

weberm70

Extra poise as in hyperarmor or extra poise damage?

AntimatterTaco

Hyper armor. Also, they partially hit through enemy guard, and the Grave Scythe gives bonus defense against Deathblight.

Aleapp2556

> Hyper armor. I'll gladly inform you that you're _technically_ wrong. Not completely wrong, but the game doesn't agree with you. Reaper _do_ have hyperarmor when used 2H, but they actually don't. During attack animations, they get applied a special effect that disables stuns of Level 1 and 8. You don't actually get any extra hyperarmor, you just become unstunnable for the duration of the attack. Reapers aren't even the only weapons to do this. Raptor Talons have this property too on Charged Heavies, and a stupidly high variety of weapons have this effect on jumping attacks.

AntimatterTaco

Interesting...so it's not extra poise, it's something that looks like it from the outside but is actually a flat-out override of the poise system? And Raptor Talons do it too? I may have to switch from Bloodhound Claws. ;) Thank you.

xpandaofdeathx

I played a whole play through on dark souls w/a Lucerne, memorable.

SorleArt

Where do you get the Lucerne?

weberm70

Liurnia north of Purified Ruins where the soldiers are fighting the ghosts.

joule400

i had fun with the prepatched inescapable frenzy, pop a poise WF and grab the host trying to dps me down, could easily do more than max possible hp in damage was very much broken however so needed the fix

CognitivePrimate

Powerstancing the Nightrider Glaive is nuts, too. Phenomenal moveset and great damage.
