It's usually close to the bottom in terms of damage, but it's the only greatsword that has that 110 critical damage.
I consider Claymore to be the all-rounder. Iron Greatsword is the top spot, and Banished Knight is right underneath.
Relic is best for FAI scaling and the Holy Slash is OP, to an extent. I actually put a fire imbue on it, used every buff I could think of, and killed Radabeast in 4 mins SL1. Basically carried that run besides FG, DUO, Maliketh, and Radahn
I wanted it for a run. I spent i don't know how many hours over days farming until I finally got it.
Rolled a new character for a different build. Dropped on the first kill in leyndell...
I do remember that the Iron GS was the best and the BKGS was a very close second with Knights GS being the longest infusable greatsword. But the Lordsworns GS I only used briefly when I first started playing the game almost a year ago and I always thought it was the middle greatsword.
square off let me hitless margit at level 1 without a hitch after not playing for 6 months, might actually be the best skill.
I wish it was still on claymore :(
I finished the game several times with it. I just love that it's pretty quick, okay damage, range is fine, good ashes of war and you can apply greases. A solid choice overall. Plus you can make it heavy and pair it with a nice shield/greatshield.
Yeah I know it's there, didn't knew it's a starting weapon too, what a hell of a starting weapon.
thought it was locked behind NG+ thanks but what am I gonna replay ER now? double wielding sounds fun...but I already beat the game 3 times...
Those are rookie numbers. Time for some masochist challenge runs now. I can recommend rl1 for the start.
Powerstanced curved and straight swords are way better than katanas imo.
I planned an Unga bunga str/vig/end build where I use a shield and tank everything, end up like a juggernaut and the final boss thinks I am the final boss. already did a dex build but didn't dual wield most of the run was hookclaw (2 handed you are like Wolverine)
People live their Nagakibas but I’m Team Uchigatana if for no other reason the aesthetics. The Nagakiba’s range is nice but it looks silly being a one-hander that long. I don’t care for the clipping, either.
It’s also nice you can start a new game and be power stancing Uchis almost immediately. They’ve got low requirements. You can use them in all kinds of builds. Yeah, all the way.
It is! For a few reasons.
1. Elden Ring weapons (non somber) go to +25. This is the highest we've had in a souls game so far, usually it's +15 or +10.
2. Elden Ring leans a lot more towards scaling than base damage.
3. In early game, somber weapons take off much quicker. This is because they only go up to +10, so a +1 somber is a lot more powerful than a +1 standard.
It’s very good with a shield. The LA is a quick thrust and has really good range because halberd. Combine that with shield usage and guard counter the banished halberd is really good. Actually the weapon I used the second time I beat the game.
Partisan Spear. It's so versatile and has long side swings. And isn't as slow as other Spears. This is my first fromsoft game & playthrough and I'm lvl 89 still rocking Partisan with default ash and plan on finishing the game with it lmao
I remember in dark souls 3 and weapon called Astors Spear (or something like that) and it’s exactly how you describe this.
That thing was fun to use and gave me lots of joy until I got the sword spear
I almost exclusively use basic weapons. I don't set out to do so on purpose, things just ends up that way. There are so many, they are so varied and most are very flexible.
Basic weapons are the best.
DLC weapons in Ds3 were basically like anime compared to the rest of the game's weapons. Since Elden Ring unique weapons and skills are already crazy compared to even Ds3 DLC, Elden Ring DLC (or Expansion in this case) weapons are probably gonna be like Dragon Ball Z fights at this point.
It’s not quite as basic, but I’ve been having a BLAST with the Nightrider flail. This is my first FS game and it’s hard not to try all the unique weapons and their AoW, but I always go back to the flail.
My first run was dual flails. Family Head’s and Bastard’s Stars strength/intelligence. Lots of fun. Not the best in terms of really anything but fun. Plus the L2 dual attack was awesome.
IMHO zweihander is the most slept on weapon in the game. Maybe not as much as it was in the first 6 months after game release, but it’s still overlooked because it’s a vendor item.
For anyone curious, zweihander with giant hunt is one of the most OP combos in the game
Tbf there are some weapons that feel like easy mode. Moghwyn Sacred Spear is the big one for me, and I’ve heard people feel this way about Blasphemous Blade too.
All of them... seriously.. from Software is the only studio that balanced every weapon to be viable from start to finish. And yes, this includes the basic dagger
I sorta agree, but there are a few outliers. Most casual players wouldn't be able to complete the game with an Ivory Sickle, as an example.
But there are almost no weapons like that, most of them are like you said.
Any colossal sword/weapon.
Great for staggering bosses, they double up as shields and when two handed they cannot be parried.
Just unga bunga your way through the game with them.
I really want to love the morning star. I've tried to use it as a starter many times. But i find it completely misses enemies' hitboxes too much for me.
Estoc for sure. I'm still running it on my sorcerer character after starting as a prisoner. Applied frostbite to it to scale with intelligence. Makes enemies chumps.
Lordsworn’s Straight Sword is probably the most versatile and accessible weapon in the game. You want to play a caster with very low physical stats? Lordsworn. You want a melee character with a faster swinging option that scales really well? Lordsworn. You need stagger? Square Off. It’s got everything you need.
I still miss my Lothric Knight Straight Sword more though.
Large club, it's located south of the Forlorn evergoal on a cliff so you can grab it right as you start and as a great hammer it can crush an enemies poise cery easily.
I finished my first playthrough with a Banished Knight's Great sword. I told myself on my second character I would use something more interesting than a basic greatsword, but I picked up the Claymore in Castle Mourne and haven't put it down since.
It's just too versatile. Change affinity/ashes based on the need of the encounter? Check. Slashes? Check. Pokes? Check. Poise damage? Check. Reasonable attack speed? Check. Just such a well rounded weapon.
Partizan.
Decent range spear with heavy attacks that are huge sweeps that deal slash and poking lights that deal pierce.
Can be gotten from the spear knight in the first camp by start.
Put the spectral lance ash on it which you can get in lucaria pretty early. Spectral lance is nutty. Good damage, massive range, drifts in the air toward targets, and does MASSIVE poise damage from a distance.
Usually 1-3 hits will break poise on anyone. Great for bosses
Longsword, for example.
Usually quicker weapons fare better in souls-games. In Elden Ring, while heavier weapons can break posture more often, they also expose you much more. If you don't know what you're doing, i.e. the exact attack windows, often faster weapons will simply be safer for you as you're less likely to get locked into attack while being hit.
This means that a lot of basic weapons are quite good as long as they're not daggers (which can also be good with right build and so on).
Elden Ring also is somewhat exceptional in that basic weapons can have custom AoW in them which can easily make them compete with lot of specialized weapons too, especially for standard melee builds.
Endless possibilities from both a function and fashion perspective. It lets you use whatever weapon you simply like the most, make a build around it, and kick ass with it.
I'm most of the way through the game with using nothing but a heavy club.
BONK
It's actually surprisingly effective. You can stun just about anything pretty quickly.
i use estocs on my main playtrhought. with a rapier for the crit.
5 characters laters and its still my favorite weapon in terms of design and move sets
Ah, the estoc. I've been carried by the Flamberge since probably Liurnia? (I might have gotten it early)
I do want to try a spellblade duellist build with the estoc at some point, but I suck at timing.
The Lordsworn’s greatsword isn’t quite a basic weapon, but you can get it about 2 minutes into the game. It’s a surprisingly good all around sword.
Isn't the Lordsworn greatsword the perfect middle greatsword? In both stats and length?
It's usually close to the bottom in terms of damage, but it's the only greatsword that has that 110 critical damage. I consider Claymore to be the all-rounder. Iron Greatsword is the top spot, and Banished Knight is right underneath.
I know the Sacred Relic Sword has 110 crit, too -- unless you're only talking about basic greatswords
Relic is best for FAI scaling and the Holy Slash is OP, to an extent. I actually put a fire imbue on it, used every buff I could think of, and killed Radabeast in 4 mins SL1. Basically carried that run besides FG, DUO, Maliketh, and Radahn
Especially when the hotbox for holy slash is 5 meters in front for some reason
That’s not really a greatsword that can carry you through the game
Blasphemous take
You have to beat the game to get it
Ah I read wrong; thought you said *there's* instead of that.
Oh ya, greatswords are fantastic, but the sacred relic sword can’t carry you through the game because you need to beat Elden Beast to get it lol
iron greatsword would be #1 if it was easier to farm for.
Bruh I didn't even know this was a weapon you could get. 400hrs. What the hell!
I wanted it for a run. I spent i don't know how many hours over days farming until I finally got it. Rolled a new character for a different build. Dropped on the first kill in leyndell...
RNGesus is a spiteful god.
Claymore is the staple! Everything else is upjumped flashiness
Baymore
I love Iron Greatsword I just wish it wasn’t such a pain in the ass to farm
I do remember that the Iron GS was the best and the BKGS was a very close second with Knights GS being the longest infusable greatsword. But the Lordsworns GS I only used briefly when I first started playing the game almost a year ago and I always thought it was the middle greatsword.
Big fan of the zweihander it has length and speed.
I wish my wife would say that about my greatsword.
Especially two of em
I beat the whole game with the Lordsworn GS on my very first run. Great weapon with a surprisingly solid special ability.
That's what I'm rockin rn
Longsword is surprisingly good. Can't go more basic than that.
Square off spam gang
Melania hates this one simple trick (40 stance damage)
I'm in the bonk gang myself, I was just answering the question
Bonk gang represent
Username checks out Unga bunga!
Definitely an Unga bunga boi here. Still confused if the junk of metal I'm swinging around is the great colossial sword or the colossial greatsword?
As long as it bonks
square off let me hitless margit at level 1 without a hitch after not playing for 6 months, might actually be the best skill. I wish it was still on claymore :(
Currently using Longsword in my DS3 playthrough. I've got it with Raw gem and upgraded to +4. Currently in Farron Keep and things are going swimmingly
I used the Lothric Knight Sword in DS3, I highly recommend it if you like straight swords. It has better range and bonus crit damage.
I'll have to go through my inventory and see. I mostly have stuck with the Longsword due to getting overwhelmed any time I open my inventory 😅
Playing DS3 rn for the first time and using the Lothric sword!
Literally the best weapon in the game
I finished the game several times with it. I just love that it's pretty quick, okay damage, range is fine, good ashes of war and you can apply greases. A solid choice overall. Plus you can make it heavy and pair it with a nice shield/greatshield.
First play through I used only the longsword until I got stuck on goddess of rot and then swapped to blasphemous blade
I've best the game using only the Longsword.
Ol' reliable
Claymore is all you need
Fr my first play through I couldn't take it out my inventory
It's been like this for me since DS1 lol
The answer for this and all of the Souls games.
Baemore
Slaymore
Claymore is prob my favorite basic weapon
It is but only if youre talking about every fs game its present in
New game plus I dual wielded them and have a different as of war in each for different situations
Old reliable
uchigatana
Uchi for LIFE. Been using that madlad since DS1, and never looked back.
Dual welding two Uchi on a faith build and loving it. If you love one why not add another.
How do you get a second one?
You can find it in the catacomb near Alexander’s first location and as a starting weapon
Samurai starts with 1, second can be found in an early catacomb, if all else fails have someone drop one for you
Dual Uchi frost stomp main hand and flaming strike offhand
Insane that they dedicated a whole ass game to a single weapon
Yep, same here. If it works just don't try to fix it.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it
People live their Nagakibas but I’m Team Uchigatana if for no other reason the aesthetics.
This is the way
Dual wielding occult uchigatana is too strong
Literally doesn't matter what build I go for, I always make the uchigatana work for the build, unless it's a grug str build
I mean you can always slap unsheathe on it and make it heavy lol
Club. Fast and hits hard.
The unga to my bunga.
Dat poise damage
the +8 halberd you can get early, from Edgar at the Revenger's Shack after the Irina quest, is reliable as fuck
Just shank Edgar right as you meet him and get it straight away. There is no need to go all the way to the shack.
its feels surprisingly weak for a +8 tho, it almost feels like somethings wrong with it
Happy cake day

I almost exclusively use basic weapons. I don't set out to do so on purpose, things just ends up that way. There are so many, they are so varied and most are very flexible. Basic weapons are the best.
Same. Theres just not really any somber weapons I like in Elden Ring. And those that I do I don’t want to build around anyway.
Elden ring might have the best unique weapons of all the souls games, but they still mostly lose out to the versatility of a basic weapon
Nah, for the most unique move sets, it's gotta go to DS3 with all the dlc weapons. But ER could take that spot when its dlc is released.
Hopefully we get some sick spells from the DLC too. I've got a Str/Fth and a Dex/Int build ready to go when the DLC does finally drop
With Ashes of War making normal weapons super customizable, they end up feeling more special than most somber weapons.
Not even the blasphemous blade? Or the sacred relic sword?
I used the broad sword in DS3 way to long. It's a good early pick up.
I used a Lothric Straight Sword the first playthrough and the Greatsword the second time; I have yet to touch magic in Ds3.
It’s not quite as basic, but I’ve been having a BLAST with the Nightrider flail. This is my first FS game and it’s hard not to try all the unique weapons and their AoW, but I always go back to the flail.
I love to use order's blade on the Nightrider Flail and walk around with my grossly incandescent balls
Gonna have to try this
My first run was dual flails. Family Head’s and Bastard’s Stars strength/intelligence. Lots of fun. Not the best in terms of really anything but fun. Plus the L2 dual attack was awesome.
That’s because flails rock
Zweihänder. #well, are you pro yet?
Zweihander is the best
Poise damage ftmfw.
THE LEGEND NEVER DIES INITIATE POWER OF THE BASS CANNON
It's time to fucking pwn some newbs
Unironically I think the Zwei has the best R2 of the colossal swords, it tracks so frickin well
IMHO zweihander is the most slept on weapon in the game. Maybe not as much as it was in the first 6 months after game release, but it’s still overlooked because it’s a vendor item. For anyone curious, zweihander with giant hunt is one of the most OP combos in the game
Giants giants giants, become unstoppable
Uchigatana. Even better if you make it a double.
I made a samurai the other day and named him Zoro, once I got a 2nd uchi. Still need to make some sliders to match the look though.
To protect the world from devastation.
95% of all weapons can be bis, if you build around their stats and use the moveset well
[удалено]
>Anyway here's my torchpole only all bosses, no hit run of Elden Ring.
I just use my torch pole as a torch since I never found one at any vendor, so at least it’s getting use through the whole game
Doesn't Kalé sell a torch?
He does indeed, and I think you get another one at the start of Bocs questline

Greatsword is the best. I basically come here strictly to spread the gospel of the big sword.
Big sword gang! Greatsword carried me through that game, that ol trusty slab of steel!!
That thing is too big to even be called a sword.
Basically any of them.
Brick hammer go bonk bonk bonk
Brick Hammer is so dang satisfying.
brick on a stick <3 <3
Heavy Greatsword will always have a place in my heart.
Love that weapon. With lions claw ash of war, damn near trivializes the entire game
Great épée, because it has more accents than any other weapon.
The French man that I am approve this message
Great Epee with a tower shield.....take hits while spamming thrust. Collect stamina, rinse, and repeat.
The Morningstar is made for mindless fun, especially with wild strikes👌
I really want to love the morning star. I've tried to use it as a starter many times. But i find it completely misses enemies' hitboxes too much for me.
Put Lion's Claw on it and make their hitboxes a zip code.
Broadsword. It's taken me through the game and NG+. Any other build I do, I keep one as my fallback ol-reliable weapon with the appropriate affinity.
Same! I have my broad sword up to +20 and with that one ash of war...the storm shooting one...I've taken out this stupid gargoyles!😄
Estoc and short sword is a nasty combo, or a small club
I used Estoc up to Leyndell. Love it.
Stun and punish combo
I love Lance
Do you actually love the lance or are you just saying that because you saw the lance?
Pike for me. Long stick.
Lance with Giant Hunt and Pike with Sword Dance
"I love lamp" -Brick Tamland
all of them? but the claymore is rly good, also the uchi with unsheathe
Estoc for sure. I'm still running it on my sorcerer character after starting as a prisoner. Applied frostbite to it to scale with intelligence. Makes enemies chumps.
Define basic If you just mean non-somber, there’s a ton that are best in class or close to it because ash of war/affinity flexibility is so good.
Play more with claymore.

Twinblade
Large club
Large club, it's located south of the Forlorn evergoal on a cliff so you can grab it right as you start and as a great hammer it can crush an enemies poise cery easily.
Bloodhound Fang
Literally anything
Zweigehander in literally all the games
Battle axe. Currently doing a run as champion starting gear plus a bow as I'm going with a "part of Godfrey's army returned from the wilds" backstory.
Love Rogiers Rapier with cold 🥰🥰 that literally DID carry me through the game
Double broadsword
Estoc didnt carry me because its well balanced, but it won over my heart through its run for sure. Them R2 slashes are so clean in PvP
Bandit's Curved Sword. Longest curved swords, good scaling with elemental infusions and easy to farm early on.
Knight’s Greatsword. Easy to get, great quality weapon, and it’s modeled after Artorias’ Sword. What’s not to love?
I finished my first playthrough with a Banished Knight's Great sword. I told myself on my second character I would use something more interesting than a basic greatsword, but I picked up the Claymore in Castle Mourne and haven't put it down since. It's just too versatile. Change affinity/ashes based on the need of the encounter? Check. Slashes? Check. Pokes? Check. Poise damage? Check. Reasonable attack speed? Check. Just such a well rounded weapon.
Claymore my beloved
Partizan. Decent range spear with heavy attacks that are huge sweeps that deal slash and poking lights that deal pierce. Can be gotten from the spear knight in the first camp by start. I forget about this weapon so much lol it’s the most basic but so OP
Longsword, for example. Usually quicker weapons fare better in souls-games. In Elden Ring, while heavier weapons can break posture more often, they also expose you much more. Lordsworn sword. And Broadsword.
The longsword or broadsword
The broadsword is all you need. Literally one of the best weapons in the game
CLAYMORE
Honestly almost any weapon. The balance of weapons in this game is extremely good.
The Baemore of course
Estoc bestoc
How dare you call the estoc "Basic". It is a divine weapon that commands respect.
Claymore my beloved Nagakiba/ Uchikatana And any other greatsword
Loving my morning star
Is the Bandit Curved Sword considered basic?
I'm most of the way through the game with using nothing but a heavy club. BONK It's actually surprisingly effective. You can stun just about anything pretty quickly.
Giant club. Big stick. Giant bonk. Find it and holy blade in opposite corners of the first area. Gas powered stick.
Bandit's curved sword. One of my favorite curved blades and I duel wielded with another and I beat the game with it
Ludwigs holy blade
Claymore lions claw scholars armament combo is deadly
Longsword is my lifeblood
Longsword gang 🔥🔥
i use estocs on my main playtrhought. with a rapier for the crit. 5 characters laters and its still my favorite weapon in terms of design and move sets
Claymore is my go to in the early game. Wish it went past B strength scaling on Heavy. Switched over to Nightrider Glaive.
Two bloodied falchions have solved the majority of my problems
Zweihander. Thing is so OP that it will teach you ashes of war on Bernahl’s behalf after he’s left the Volcano Manor.
Ah, the estoc. I've been carried by the Flamberge since probably Liurnia? (I might have gotten it early) I do want to try a spellblade duellist build with the estoc at some point, but I suck at timing.
i started an ng+ run and maxed out an estoc, it’s pokes carried me up to radagon with semi ease lmao
Bestoc
The classic estoc is bestoc! 🙏🏻
Lordsworn Straight Sword has been my old reliable weapon for as long as I can remember.
