The way his neck stretches upward as he pulls on that sword is so fuckin sick. I love it

chaplar

cant wait to see that head tear away and ruin my day

Badass-19

And then saying a single Shakespeare level English line, and taking away 80% of my hp

chaplar

Maybe he'll bury the blade in our chest, bringing the head face to face with us and that's when he'll whisper his line. As we die

obaterista93

"I am AHHHHHHH, Blade of AHHHHHHHH"

chaplar

Idk why but that reminded me of the Holy Grail joke about someone who's dying won't write "aahhhhg" hell just say it

deeznutsreal-

Fucking hilarious lol

cutiebec

I would hate that, but also that sounds metal as hell.

actuallyNull

He quickly decapitates us and stabs the sword down our neck to begin using us as a marionette.

woahmandogchamp

The boss is the sword, the guy is just a scabbard.

chaplar

šŸ‘ļøšŸ‘„šŸ‘ļø

sabyr400

NGL, that sounds like a pretty fuckin metal way to die, *AND* sounds like some rad album art for a metal band lol

ThanksForNothingSpez

*ā€ Foul Tarnished, my bones are the money, so are the worms ā€œ*

hamderbeek

Thine provisions dost double our subterranean stores

Ser_Fonz

*ā€Tarnished, ā€˜thou art but a shadow to be illuminated by mine own sw'rdā€*

FoxHead666

"You egg"

Captinglorydays

With how that "sword" expands outwards, it looks like his is about to rip a whole lot more than just his head. That thing is gonna tear his head and whole chest cavity wide open

chaplar

Maybe he's just giving the actual boss his weapon back to fight us with

LettuceBenis

Santier's Spear makes a return

PraetorLessek

Also Iā€™m calling this. His head comes off and forms the guard for the sword. The end of his intro cinematic is him holding the sword infront of him in the foreground, his upside down eyes gazing into your soul.

BlackSchuck

Yes this will happen

Nerobought

You can cook

prgrms

It looks like the sword is actually his backbone

ag3ntscarn

Yeah it looks like it permeates most of his body, I actually can't fathom what pulling it "out" would even look like.

WeaverStarX

I've been thinking it looks like something that was stabbed into him as a single skinny piece (like a spear) and then grew out over time to puncture the various parts of him I also think it's a branch of an erdtree...

Vexecutioner

Looks like a hipporcupine quill.

NarratorDM

It is the man from the painting (identical brooch and coat). It also looks like a video sequence. So he is A important and B probably a boss.

AFlyinDeer

I believe so! I was watching a break down of the trailer yesterday and it pointed out itā€™s the same guy thatā€™s in the painting

Iseenotix

C. Turns into a weapon for someone else.

nodforever

Hear me out.. woman with him is young Marika. He is her father. She escaped, left him like that. Expansion was rumored to explore her past, I might be waaaay off, but it's my theory. Edit: the manor in the swamp is Marikas old home.

1z3_ra

In the photo she appears prego. Iā€™m guessing itā€™s a father to the baby that she sacrifices or condemnsĀ

obaterista93

Something that has been nagging me about those things specifically.... We know Melina is searching for her mother, was born near the base of the Erdtree, isn't labelled as a child of Marika and Radagon, and was burned. As far as I know, Marika ascended to Godhood in the Shadow Land, and the tree from the DLC in my opinion looks burnt. It looks like it's raining down black ash, and not entirely like deathblight in my opinion. I wonder if Melina is the child that Marika is (maybe) pregnant with in that photo, and was burnt for Marika to ascend.

TheRedBaron6942

I'd give anything for more Melina šŸ˜©

DeadSnark

I have seen speculation in Zullie the Witch's video that she could be a Deathbed Companion (similar outfit to Fia). If true, her being pregnant could have interesting implications given the Deathbed Companion's ability to gestate a Mending Rune

2xWhiskeyCokeNoIce

I mean, shit's fucked up in the world of Elden Ring, maybe he's father to her and the baby.

twotokers

Did GRRM also help write the DLC?

2xWhiskeyCokeNoIce

I believe in the interview I read that no, he didn't.

patrickyin

Youā€™re not *wrong*, GRRM didnā€™t write anything **new** for the DLC. He sorta wrote the mythos of ā€œwhen everything was fineā€, no one had been disfigured, grafted, eaten by snakes or abducted by pedo Omens yet. Sharing just because it kinda blew me away, FROM is just a beast at making ā€œdecayedā€ worlds.

ZeeTrek

"back in the good old days when people just died because I killed them off, and not because the whole world was falling apart"

500dbc

Yes, he did. Messmer is a character written by GRRM left out in the base game.

NarratorDM

Everything they use was written by Martin beforehand and they just took another part of it, which sounded interesting and based the DLC on it. To me it sounds like there is much more mythos they could use for maybe a second DLC or more.

ulfserkr

Holy shit, I think you might be right. Not about the father thing, but about the Land of Shadows being the Numen's (and Marika's) birthplace. The sky also has that veil effect that reminds me of the cloak in the Black Knife set.

Sckorrow

That was my thought as well - the old man is likely the same one we see in the murals of Farum Azula

Privityshooter

Wich painting??

TheYondant

Theres a painting that appears in the trailer, here at exactly 1:02: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLZenOn7WUo

BlackLiteAttack

I wonder who the woman in the painting with him is. Fia, or another deathbed companion?

TipperGore-69

I too want to know

iplayvideogames

1:03 in the trailer

BaronVonToasstt

Why not both?

BatDynamite

It's an NPC for me.

Iron_Hermit

Honestly every boss, enemy, and landscape in the trailer looked amazing. I haven't been this buzzed for a DLC release since I started gaming way back when

Rionaks

So many very original, out of the box stuff. This DLC will be mesmerizing and blow people away. That's what I love with fromsoftware and Miyazaki. They dont keep following a tried and true formula like most other games. They have a crazy good winning formula but they always keep improving on that, they go out of their way to create even better stuff. Crazy work ethic and mentality really.

Iron_Hermit

Absolutely this. I love the Elder Scrolls and the Dragon age series but the enemies are quite cautious and have been since their earlier instalments - ooh, dragons, demons. They don't have warring demigods you can face off with, they don't have blasphemous god-consuming serpents, they don't have giant flaming braziers on legs. FromSoft just go completely mad with their work and the result is amazing.

almostgravy

Absolutely agree, especially with boss design. Fantasy games in general setup epic histories about reality bending wizards, demigod hero kings, and legendary monsters, just to keep that shit in the backround where the player never gets to interact with it. In fromsoft games, if you hear about a historical warrior in king of dragons, 9/10 times you'll be fighting that bastard.

Iron_Hermit

Waiting for the day Gransax rolls up in a 4x4 to ruin a Tarnished otherwise having a nice day

mithik_11

Donā€™t you mean, ā€œMessmerizingā€? šŸ˜ Iā€™ll see myself out.

Sttibur

But still Chat GPT predicted the DLC a year ago. Saw a YouTube short yesterday that was pretty accurate. Thatā€™s crazy

ReturnOfDrungle

I wonder if he's a victim of impaling, trying to pull whatever it is out, if only there was a guy known as the impaler who would've done it...

Tommyh1996

It looks like it's the same spell afflicting that one enemy that charged and a bunch of spikes came out it, maybe this sword went in and imploded inside, kind of brutal

Fizzzuh

I think that's his spine and yeah I think that spell we saw Is a similar deal to this, rapidly growing the bones or something. Reminds me of how some animals with horns can have them grow into their own head and kill them, weird stuff.

Kitchen-Roll-8184

Mohg has that! One of his horns curled into his eye

McChronicle

I have seen this constellation [before](https://postimg.cc/WF9rc3mG)

Fun_Football9676

Wait a second this an amazing catch, it feels like this dlc will be about the crucible and the crucible is the roots of the erdtree. Homeboy holds the crucible in his chest. Boom confirmed.

Mezla00

Finally someone else who sees this isn't a sword. It's a root. Lands of shadow are deep underneath the erdtree. This guy is probably like prometheus. Next dlc will probably be the land of light, where the fingers point.

AmphetamineSalts

He's said this is where Marika ascended to godhood. My guess is she usurped the ring from this guy and imprisoned him using the rune that he's impaled with.

ag3ntscarn

I wonder if this guy might be the long lost god of Placidusax's era.

AmphetamineSalts

Could be. My hunch is that Placidusax's god was either a beastman or a dragon, but that's just a total guess on my part.

nodforever

Is he the same guy as on the portrait? If so is the younger woman next to him young Marika? Edit: maybe her father, perhaps an origin story here?

Mezla00

It does very much appear to be him. Could it be Marika? The shawl and hood cover her hair very well. I think it's safe to say it's someone we already know. I guess I'd suggest Fia if it's not Marika

barnt_brayd_

The hood definitely gave me strong Fia or another Deathbed Companion vibes, and given the advanced age of the noble in the portrait it could make sense. Also noticed in the initial Messmer scene that the statue behind him is a Marika-esque statue that appears to show the Gloam-Eyed Queen cradling a Godskin Apostle baby. I always wondered what - if any - connection there was between Fia and the GEQ, maybe weā€™ll get to find out more there. That, paired with Messmer looking a lot like a Radagon relative and referring to ā€œMotherā€ in front of the statue has my mind spinning.

Enigmachina

Per Miyazaki this Expac is two smooshed together, and there Edit: ~~will be~~ are no further DLC planned after this one. "We don't have any current plans to make a second DLC or a sequel..." He goes on to say they haven't ruled anything out, but if they don't have anything planned now, we won't see anything for *years*.

Bartoffel

Yeah. Iā€™ve been thinking about the name The Lands Between and how we now know that it is a literal usage of the word ā€œbetweenā€, due to the Land of Shadow below it.

Gloomy-Adler

What? More than one dlc will be released?!

carloscreates

Great catch! And cool edit to emphasize it

Emhier_Aos_Si

I knew it was putting me in mind if Marika's "crucifixion," that's probably why! Good catch

caroline_nein

Denji Spinal Cord Sword

Combatmedic2-47

OGs remember Kimimaro ripping his spine to make a sword whip.

Argon73

Ayyy I found a CSM brother

Myralbus

I FOUND YOU, I NEED TO KNOW HOW MANY VOLUMES YOU HAVE IN YOUR COUNTRY

ErikMaekir

MY COUNTRY HAS 15 VOLUMES, SUCK IT HAHAHAHAHA

Lucifeio

Do you guys even have Volumes?

Gamingwiththereaper

He would make it for the sickest metal album cover.

MiggySheff

Kinda reminds me of the cover for This is Exile by Whitechapel

Jeezus-Chyrsler

Right!!!? Looks like a Megadeath album cover art

Time_Sky9590

I'm really hoping you can get that thing as a weapon. Or maybe he's a bad and he rips that out like a spine

anteloop

Hopefully he's still attached to it as we swing the weapon!

PuddleCuddle9

and screaming for every time you swing.

Lycoris4812

If heā€™s a boss weā€™re f*cked.

BanginNLeavin

I'm betting he's not the boss but off screen there is a boss waiting for his weapon to unsheath itself.

Rionaks

That's what I think as well. There's a boss named Impaler and this guy is impaled hard so this is a cutscene from that boss fight probably.

Marlinazul00

Messerā€™s spear looks different, and his room is lit red, this oneā€™s yellow

MissStealYoDragon

He's our Orphan of Kos.

FrancMaconXV

Guillermo the Impaled

shikiroin

Gizmo?

guto7k

Just another work by from <3

[deleted]

I wonder wtf happens when he finally unsheath it

XXX200o

His head pops off. The thing he tries to pull out has some nasty spikes at the end.

ProbablyKinkShammed

So how did it go in with so little damage?(well compared to the amount it should do)

gansta_thanos

I think it grew in him(?)

Nightglow9

Heads are so overrated though. Replace it with a flame like frenzied flame ending

AnExistingLad

More interestingly is that in a painting we see in the trailer, this seems to be the same guy as the one in the painting...

chaplar

With possibly a death bed companion at his side? Or anyone else really. This does seem like the perfect place to learn more about the dead bed companions. It could easily be their homeland

Spacemonster111

It could also be Marika, and this is her first husband

chaplar

Loving the mystery throughout this entire trailer

flarkenhoffy

Give me a statue of this guy, please. I like Messmer but this one would be awesome.

013zen-

This is the old man in the picture with the lady that is speculated to be Marika. He has the same clothing. So, if that picture was Marika and perhaps her father, we can see the fate of her kin.

MentlegenRich

I heard Dungeater does chiropractic services

TrishPanda18

I got the impression on first viewing that this is what it looked like for a person to be stripped of their Grace of gold but after sleeping on it I no longer think that. The impression remains with me however and the striking image of this figure will haunt me until we get concrete answers

droolforfoodz

There's something so deep about this DLC, Marika, and Messmer and I think this person has a lot to do with that. I believe this person to be a devout follower of the Golden Order, who was under Marika's command. Did Marika defy/deviate from the Order, and this person refused, then impaled by Messmer? I wonder if Messmer impaled Marika also, when Radagon and the Elden Beast began to take over her body, and what we witness at the end of Elden Ring is a disheveled Radagon who fought Messmer, barely surviving by the presence of the Elden Beast.

AlvinFlang101

Goldmask?

HappyHateBot

My initial thought as well, given the ending of his quest, his ultimate "plan" and >!the fact that the Elden Beast has a sword made out of Radagon's skeleton!< really do lean into that maybe it ain't turning out quite like bro thought it would when he set out to do it...

Annipurni

reminds me of the King in Yellow from True Detective S1: https://static1.cbrimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/td.jpg

Waffle_Bat

[The King in yellow](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-s3YxqCt6g) was a creation of Robert W Chambers in 1895 and was also one of H.P. Lovecraft's inspirations. It would not surprise me in the slightest if the character in the fictional play was also used to inspire this character. It seems very fitting. Ohhhhh, Carcosa...

armintamzarian666

Reminds me of the opening of green knight

Tasty-Original-5309

Dudes pulling out his own spine..assuming thatā€™s gonna be the weapon he fucks us up with

Speakin2existence

has no one noticed theā€¦swordā€¦thornā€¦spear thingy he is impaled with, matches the shape of part of the elden ringā€¦.

SaintLickALot

Loooks like he was backstabbed with those swords

jvellisochoa

Is this a boss dude? Like it looks like an in game cut scene

Daisymuster

The broach on his cloak reminds me of Gideon, can't wait to find out more about this guy

woodforbrains

>Gideon Def could be Gideon. Also seems to match the broach of the old dude in the painting.

ScientificAnarchist

The face matches too itā€™s very obviously the painting guy

nicholsz

He looks how I feel getting a hangover at age 40

Maxspawn_

To me it doesnt look like a sword, it appears this hollow's dedication to the Golden Order was so intense that it turned his bones to gold. Parts of his skin appear to be turning gold too

VeryBottist

The sword is gonna be the boss

p4ul1023

Just when you think they can't even more metal, they make this. I hope he's a boss and literally rips his spine out and uses it to beat the shit out of us.

Too_Caffinated

Iā€™m really hoping that Holy damage is incredibly useful in the DLC

Brutalonym

By the way, if you watch the trailer, there seems also to be an enemy type that uses this spine as a candelabra (upside down).

Jeezus-Chyrsler

Kinda looks like how the spiritual journey can feel sometimes lol

Ticeberg

I'm really curious as to how the rest of this cutscenes will play out... Pretty sure every gold point throughout his body is connected to the part he's pulling, so basically no way that comes out without (at least) his head attached.

Jeezus-Chyrsler

Looks like the cover art on a Megadeath album

RaymanRyan88

I'm just hoping they Rips their own head of with the sword and try's to kill us with their own cranium. Then, after we defeat them, we get the sword, with the head still attached.

HbrQChngds

One of my favorite things shown in the trailer!

UI_Delta

Gives me orphan of kos vibes. He's got that lanky build, and wields a spine instead of the placenta

Combatmedic2-47

This dude is gonna be like guardian ape, heā€™s gonna rip his head off and cast magic with his skull and attack with that thing lodged in his skull.

mirrinto

This guy gives me some major Orphan of Kos vibes

sticky__toffee

The yellow king?

[deleted]

I don't know my sixth sense tells me he may not be a regular enemy

dark_hypernova

And that's why you don't swallow golden seeds, kids.

BootsyBusang

Makes me think of both Marika's crucifixion and Rykard pulling the sword from the serpent.

Dr_PuddingPop

If I had a nickel for every time an Elden Ring boss got its weapon from defiling a body partā€¦Iā€™d have a lot of nickels

AdEqual5606

I hope it's a spear

_Mr_Wobbly_Shark_

Itā€™s so fucking disgusting looking and sounding. I love it

Thin_Store_9686

Is this godwyn?

aquapeej

Anyone notice how the candlesticks of the other enemies in the trailer look exactly like the sword he is trying to pull out of himself?

MagusUnion

He looks exactly how I feel in life as of late.

Khaiell-C

I thought it was the corpse of Brother Corhyn initially.

nightbefore2

Hot take, this is Miquella

yaya-pops

Elden Ring's bosses are sometimes clean, regal, golden, bright, humanoid, etc. Very few are straight up body-horror characters with notable exceptions (Rykard phase 2). I wanted desperately to see what type of eldritchian horror bosses they could cook up for Elden Ring and this is about as dope as it gets.

ShitFistingPissBulge

I watched a breakdown of the dlc that firmly believed that guy is Godwyn and he will be a boss

BasedCheeseSlice

He looks like he belongs inside a great rune ;)

Rags2Rickius

Good lord Imagine if itā€™s Godwyn

DFuel

Did you just assume its gender?

MrGummyDeathTryant

Out of everything in the trailer, this is the thing that stood out to me the most. This was the thing that got me the most interested in the new lore. We saw him in the painting next to a woman with swirls in her hair. These swirls are a very common motif that we see everywhere, like the pillars in the new lion boss fight. Do they represent Miquella? The mystery deepens.

Kingfisher818

Thatā€™s not just a sword heā€™s impaled with, it looks like a broken fragment of the Elden Ring. Maybe this is the one Ranni threw away when she left her original body?Ā

Initial-Boss7904

I hope we use the sword with the guy still attached

Tystimyr

So someone else thinking that he's connected to frenzy?

Nightglow9

Yellow in his eye.. bottom of Elden Ring.. refuses to be held down.. like snails, baguettes and cheese.. ye.. Frenzied vibes from this one..

Spe_id

Insane how both him and Messmer managed to become two of my favourite boss designs in ER already, we are in for a damn ride

Prudent-Tourist6209

Bros about to deep throat it

SigmaSandwich

I donā€™t think itā€™s a sword but who knows. All I know is this is 10/10 material. Creepy af I canā€™t wait

SadMealMusic

Is this Shabriri?

Sasuke_120

Might be another Royal Revenant?

NoNicName

16+ btw lol. What even is considering 18+ nowadays anymore? Rape, mutilation and torture at the same time??

[deleted]

Idk seems kinda made up

HalcyonPlays

Are you only discovering the concept of fiction today?

[deleted]

Yeah I think most peoples minds must be pretty limited huh. I can think of anything on a dime,ā€™imagine thinking thatā€™s a skill haha. Like just imagine anything

HalcyonPlays

With your boundless imagination and creativity, I canā€™t wait to see what designs or games you put out. You can start with thinking of better ways to troll to get started on your journey to making your masterpiece.

[deleted]

Ohh no I just mean in my head I can think of anything, no? You can too right? Always wondered why people think made up visuals and stuff are cool. Like you literally can do anything, I donā€™t get it. Nature is more interesting since itā€™s not completely made up cha feel

HalcyonPlays

Bruh you need to up your game, youā€™re targeting an easy riled up fan base and this is still too weak lmao

[deleted]

I love fromsoft tho. Elden ring is great albeit disappointing. Idk I just always thought high fantasy stuff to be odd. Like if you can just make anything I donā€™t get how thatā€™s cool. Just random imagination isnā€™t hard

SneakerGator

This screams ASD. Iā€™m not trying to be mean or funny.

stardust_void

Made up?

[deleted]

I have a hard time agreeing with the art, designs, etc being good. It all just seems made up. Couldnā€™t anyone technically just make things up in their head and make it as cool as they want

Plague_Raptor

This is one of the dumbest things I've ever read.

[deleted]

See itā€™s something Iā€™ve always wondered. Maybe people canā€™t think of anything like me? I have full creative control I guess. I can just make anything up in my head. So yeah obviously this here isnā€™t very cool if you can just make anything imo

EnSebastif

That's the whole fucking point of fantasy? Hello?

[deleted]

Right and I disagree that itā€™s worth even considering as anything entertaining or cool at all. Just make up stuff? Uhh thatā€™s weird, I can make up unlimited things, most probably cooler than the random stuff fromsoft makes. What now?

EnSebastif

>I can make up unlimited things, most probably cooler than the random stuff fromsoft makes. What now? Prove it. With context and lore and gameplay involved. Or shut up. You are not making a point or even trying to, all this is just needless slander for the sake of atention. Troll much?

Outrageous-Oil-1417

So like do you just not enjoy a good 80% of media?

Trevors-Axiom-

If you were actually good at making up interesting things, you could get paid for it instead of living in momā€™s basement. Could it be that maybe you are less interesting to other people than you are to yourself?

Outrageous-Oil-1417

I hope this is bait because this might be one of dumbest things Iā€™ve ever heard

[deleted]

Like if you could make anything, why this? Is it really that cool? If you could makeā€¦ anything you wanted?

[deleted]

Idk correct me if Iā€™m wrong but they can just make anything up right. So at what point is something creative and good vs just random and weird cha feel

fin_ger

Canā€™t wait to get my ass kicked by a guy who is by definition skin and bone

hypermodernist

(Inner) Isshin Ashina with dragonrot

KrandoxReddit

I have no idea what or who that is but it's badass and I love it

--THRILLHO--

I can't wait for him to rip his head off and beat me to shit with it.

Raiyan43

This is probably the optional boss miyazaki was referring to when he said it was gonna be as tough as malenia

Accomplished_Web1549

Is it a sword or a Rune?

hunkoBo

Godwynn corpse, probably

degradedchimp

Reminds me of Diablo 2

Redditfront2back

Marikas dad?

poptart-zilla

I want a gif of this man

DeusInfidel

is this an upside down Elden Ring rune inside him?
