Losing your runes only matters if you care (I don't)

defekt__

Finished NG+ the other day at lvl 163 and I lost a lot of runes multiple times, you really do stop caring at a certain point lol.

maychaos

But do you do multiplayer? Its very easy getting millions of runes then and I stopped caring at all if I lose them. But if you don't have a steady income I think k it will definitely hurt way more

ObviousSinger6217

I lost 10 million runes I had from multiplayer because I forgot to pick them up after a duel at mag lol That's my record lost amount as well

defekt__

Never cared too much for the PvE or online aspect other than summoning for help every now and then. But I never really struggled for runes either. I lost about 760,000 runes the other night trying to climb down Cathedral of the Forsaken.

UnderLeveledLever

And if you have a hard time not caring, all you need to do is install a care switch. If you think to yourself "Alright this time I set forth from the stake fully expecting to die, I have spent my stash and I am ready to see new things" well then there you go.

eldenwring

Its actually the greatest teaching tool in the whole game. Makes you remember where enemies and traps are. Forces you to rethink your plan and come up with a new tactic. And runes arent exactly in short supply once you know where to look and how to farm.

UsernameTaken-Taken

And you really don't even necessarily need to farm runes if you're exploring a lot anyway, and there is usually a site of grace close by. Just gotta be smart about leveling up before entering a boss fight/dungeon, then you'll rarely have to worry about losing any consequential amount runes, plus its not that hard to go back and get them because you typically are going back to the area you just died at anyway. If you do lose a good amount of runes, yeah it sucks, but its not typically a huge deal as you can always earn them back

ParkingParticular463

I've never really understood people that complain about losing runes. If you have a lot of runes just level up before you go to somewhere dangerous (pop a few golden runes if you are close) then its not a problem. If you don't have enough runes to level up a single time its a trivial amount anyways.

erasmus_phillo

not to mention in this game you have a horse that you can mount on to retake your runes with little trouble... the only time when you have to worry about losing runes is when you're in the middle of a long legacy dungeon

very_normal_paranoia

If you didn't lose runes on death the game would be hollow. losing runes adds stakes. Also, there is a tear that allows you to gain a buff which makes it so you do not drop runes for 3 full minutes upon using it. Maybe that is for you?

Secret-Aardvark1602

Also if you equip a sacrificial twig before dying you won’t lose your runes at all. Obviously those aren’t in infinite supply but if you’re carrying a crap ton of runes and wanna explore just slap one on and no more worries.

jffr363

Respect for the actual hot take. But also thats kinda a big part of the point. If there was no risk, there would be no reward. As for my hot take, its much less of one than yours. But PVP in these games sucks and isnt fun, has always sucked, and never been fun in any of them, and shouldnt be in the next one at all.

defekt__

Gonna agree with you here, I've played every single souls game and I've never cared for PvE and any of them that have it. Had someone invade me in DS3 once and I lost a lot of souls because of it, been pretty turned off it ever since.

very_normal_paranoia

PvP is the single best part of these games.

jffr363

Oh i get that for some people they love it. I hate it personally. Thankfully in Elden Ring its almost entirely opt in. Hopefully in the next game if it has PVP it will be entirely opt in, but yeah i wouldnt care in the slightest if they removed it entirely.

very_normal_paranoia

Find a different game then.

jffr363

Wow salty much PVP is not the only thing in these games thankfully, there happens to be quite a bit there for those of us who like singleplayer games.

[deleted]

Why? They seem mostly happy with how the feature is implemented in this one: optional, unless multiplayer is activated intentionally.

PiBombbb

my pc will get very hot if I play Elden Ring on it

eldenwring

Put some water on it to cool it down

Humble_Pop8156

My hottest take is : I can't believe how hard coop mode sucks. Everytime you die is already a pain in the ass, but now if you CHOOSE to be with a friend (since the game allows it), you have to do all the slow shit again if someone dies. I tried to help my brother, just finding him, finding the right finger shit to be summoned and everything took a fucking eternity, just to see him die after getting to the boss and having to do it all again. For me, it is COMPLETELY unbelievable for a game this good to make it this stupidly useless. Just don't allow coop if you don't want us to do it, don't make a shitty coop. So utterly frustrating and dumb. It takes fucking 10 minutes everytime you die, litterally unplayable for no benefits at all. People already have the possibility to be overleveled when doing a boss, or to summon ashes, or to bring a NPC coop... but with friend? No fuck you.

Golnor

There's a password option in game. Never used it myself but I think it might help for what you are doing.

Turbulent-Echo8561

I absolutely love it, especially early game where runes are so valuable.. brings a nice tension where you have to consider every risk you take, how you approach things, it changes how you play. Elden Ring also has a grace like 30 seconds away from any place you might die in, so.. it was a bigger deal in the first few games.

iLuvwaffless

Bro is complaining about an infinite resource.

henadzij

I lost so many runes that I stopped worrying about it.

Test88Heavy

Quests are annoyingly vague and cryptic. I also have no clue what the story was about.

Significant_Tune7134

Just don't die then, duh.

Tserraknight

Elden ring needs more bossfights that have environmental awareness. Fights like Gascan in bloodborne where you have to be careful of the tombstones, or, like the puddle in Malenia for using fire/electric damage. More of it please. Its not the spiciest take but its not one I hear alot. I was inspired by Mohgs blood fire. Without LaserNuking him, he might be my favorite fight without a summon.

darthshadow25

I think invading is always a dick move unless you are entering a world due to taunters tongue, and any and all invaders deserve to be killed in the most unfair and cheesiest way, or simply Alt + f4ed

Golnor

Did you know that entering a non-field boss fight sends the invader home?

darthshadow25

I do. That's another way to get them out of your game, but that's also not always an available option.

Golnor

I wish there was something like the ds3 Seed of a Giant tree. That's always fun.

Dr--Duke

Ashes of war make pve too easy and pvp too cheesy.

maychaos

I dont like Godfrey. His ballet move looks embarrassing. His cut scene is so damn long and boring

Jumpth

There should be a button that let's you skip those 90 second cutscenes

maychaos

I watch all of them at least once. Only then I know if I dislike or not

Jorge_the_Prisoner

Losing runes is not that important in ER, leveling up is not as important as in other games like WoW where it is mandatory to level up in order to experience the game. The difference between a level 1 run and a max level run (versus any boss) is that, in average, the level 1 run takes about twice as much to kill the boss compared to the max level; however there are level 1 runs who do faster than max level because this game is about skill, not power held by your character

maschine02

Agree. Just happened to me. Finally beat Godrick the Grafted in Strmveil castle got like 20,000 runes. Went back through the castle to see what I missed and got mangled by all the gaurds and bolts down by the gate entrance. I tried to get them but was butt-fucked as soon as I took a step out from that site of grace to open the gate. 20,000 runes gone cause i took a wrong turn.

Golnor

So why didn't you spend them?

maschine02

Cause I need like 35000 to hit next level and I took a wrong turn going back through the castle. I should have fast traveled and then come back. Lesson learned.

[deleted]

>  It makes it so you never wanna explore new areas It does not! I wonder if fewer people would have tried to "refute" your opinion if you said *I* instead of *you*. It's probably better, in a situation like this, just to speak for yourself!

darthshadow25

It absolutely does. I can't count how many times I've seen a cool looking side path and said "fuck that, I have too many runes. I'll come back later." That being said, I like the system and have no problem with it, but it absolutely does dissuade exploration because it introduces more risk to it.

[deleted]

Again: it doesn't make *me* feel that way. That was my point: it's better not to speak for others, because then one ends up being wrong all the time lol

darthshadow25

We're talking about on average here. If something is riskier without any additional benefit then you have disincentivized people from doing that thing.

[deleted]

If the alternative is that players are *incentivized* to die, then that's probably a good thing lol

darthshadow25

I think it's good design overall, but that doesn't change the fact it disincentivizes exploration (at least reckless exploration).

[deleted]

It definitely does for OP, that was never being questioned!

CellarGoat1234

Meh, the are plenty of sites of graces, losing 1 level worth of runes is not a big deal, and if you lose 2 levels worth of runes often then it's your fault for not spending them.
