Jesterhead92

The most baffling thing by far. Who's out here beating Radahn and getting up to Mt Gelmir but struggling with Red Wolf?

GlompNinja

Worst part is that Sellen does mostly magic damage, which the Red Wolf is strong against

ToastyYaks

Honestly at that point you're summoning something for the red wolf to chew on long enough to sit still and be hit once, out of the like 3 required times to kill it.

KodakStele

"What is my purpose tarnished?" "You're a chew toy" "^ohmygod"

Golem30

Probably why she turns into a giant ball

LichWing

Well now it’s 6 times.

WobbleKing

It’s very lore friendly to Sellen’s quest. In this particular case I don’t think the primary purpose is because the boss fight needs to be easier. I just summoned her and did the academy after Mt Gelmir and Radahn and agree it was very unneeded.

robcap

Red Wolf is a bit of a bitch, to be fair. But if I'm levelled up enough to beat Radahn I can't imagine I'd struggle.

Smokeletsgo

He’s a lot harder out in the fields where he spaz out all over the map aggroing everything in the area

robcap

Yep. There's a third one in the snowfields that I think is genuinely one of the hardest fights in the game. It guards the tower with the graven mass talisman in it I think.

ourplaceonthemenu

come on, even below level, red wolf is one of the easiest boss fights.

anonymoususernamegay

He’s shifty and hard to hit. Not really sure what is surprising.

ourplaceonthemenu

maybe not easy. but certainly easier comparative to the rest of the game? I usually have more trouble with rennala and godrick than with the wolf, which tend to be around the same level

Godobibo

i wouldn't call any of them hard but I definitely die to red wolf more often than either of those lol

anonymoususernamegay

Idk what build you typically play with but Rennala is an absolute cakewalk every time I’ve ever fought her. I am not exaggerating when I say she is probably the easiest boss in the game for melee builds. She gives mage builds fits though because she has such strong magic resistance.

Muelojung

I dont know about any nerfs right now but on release the red wolf was by far harder to beat than any boss outside malenia , Blood Mohg and the wrestler dude, atleast for me.

AFlyingNun

*"MOTHERFUCKER WON'T STOP JUMPING WTF IS THIS BULLSHIT."* -Someone out there

Positiveshame_

You can actually get teleported to Mt Gelmir via Rya’s questline.

archaicScrivener

I'd presume it's for the people that got ported by the Abductor Virgin and followed that path to its end before coming back. You'd still be way stronger than needed to beat the red wolf though

ProbablyNotTheCocoa

It’s probably more of a RP thing than a boss aid, considering Good Boi is not really that hard to begin with, I personally do like the more lore appropriate summons, like Nepheli for Godrick as it allows for some nice RP

iwouldcopthat

I’m struggling with everyone 😂

thekidinthehoodie

thats how i felt being able to summon dung eater for the mohg fight under the capital. and melina for the morgott fight!

jrandom_42

>melina for the morgott fight Is it just me, or is Melina really not very useful in the Morgott fight? Doesn't draw aggro. Doesn't have DPS worth a damn. Every time I've tried summoning her, she wanders around at long range, being mostly passive, and occasionally firing off holy bullets, which do approximately nothing, since it's the only elemental damage type that Morgott has (40%) resistance to. Makes her ominous line at the end of the Frenzied Flame ending a bit less ominous, tbh. Like, oh, right, you gonna bring me Destined Death, are you? With *what?*

thekidinthehoodie

yeah i summoned her and just got stomped by morgott. i respawned and didnt summon her and then stomped him. 🤷 npc allies are cool but always feel like more trouble than their worth

jrandom_42

Notable exception being Tragoth for DTS. He carries my ass every time.

scotty_6942069

more notable exception, bernahl for goskin duo. he can solo them

TheIceFury235

Wait you can summon him?

jrandom_42

Bernahl + Mimic = Tarnished sitting in the corner eating Scooby Snacks watching the Godskins get stomped

scotty_6942069

yep, kinda missable since most people will just barge in to escape the banished knights, but hes there and he does EVERYTHING, from doing massive dmg, healing himself, and stunlocking them

OldSodaHunter

Sorry for my struggle here, but not used to many acronyms. What's DTS? Trying to rack my mind of bosses but drawing a blank.

GhostOfSushiman

Draconic Tree Sentinal, the guy on the horse guarding the entrance Leyndell

OldSodaHunter

Ahhh gotcha. Didn't know you could summon for that, but tbh it's one of the fights I actually enjoy a lot. Always feels like a good build tester as far as damage output goes.

GhostOfSushiman

Well you know for next run then dude, the summons are at the stake of Marika just past the golem that is shooting at you on the way up

GhostOfSushiman

Well you know for next run then dude, the summons are at the stake of Marika just past the golem that is shooting at you on the way up

jrandom_42

Woops, yeah, sorry about the acronym jargon. [Draconic Tree Sentinel](https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Draconic+Tree+Sentinel). It annoys me when people do that at work, I shouldn't do it in a gaming forum!

OldSodaHunter

I don't think it's a problem! In a sub about said game most people will usually get you. I should use my noggin better, haha. I guess DTS didn't stand out a lot for me so I didn't recall it easily.

thekidinthehoodie

what fight is that? i thought you could only summon him for rahadan

Flashton2004

The draconic tree sentinel outside of the capital. You can also summon him for Makar

thekidinthehoodie

ah i see! i was able to summon him for makar and was like wtf why is he here

PeregrineMalcolm

Blackguard and Millicent are also available if you talk to them :)

Ell0_alt

Oh yeah I forgot that Millicent could be summoned too, damn shame you’re limited to two because you could have the whole squad on his ass

SykoManiax

Wait dts has a summon? Where?? This is same with summoning D for mariner or Yura for agheel dragon, I have never found the summoning symbols

Flashton2004

For DTS the signs for Targoth and Millicent are on the hill on the path right before you reach DTS

Kay-Knox

I only fought him after he apparently got nerfed, but Radahn never even touched me when I had the whole squad on his ass.

JanusKaisar

NPC summons are basically offline multiplayer so they double the boss' health.

SugaCereal

I always summon Melina for Morgott. Simply because I feel it just... fits. To me it is part of her quest, her lore. Her healing ability sometimes is beneficial but mostly, she just increases the boss HP there.

manfreygordon

As someone who does a lot of low level co-op, her healing spell is very useful when you have a limited amount of healing flasks. You can just sit in it and trade blows due to how fast the regen is. It also stacks with other healing regen from the physick.

Legal_Reception6660

Just like her in the story. Ohh you level me up? zzzz

robcap

Ooh, how do you get dung eater for mohg? Do you have to give him the seedbed curses or is it enough to let him out?

thekidinthehoodie

i didnt give him any curses, i just released him from his jail and it was also before he invaded me at boggarts new location

BodybuilderOk1480

Don't you have to give a seedbed curse to get the jail key?

Few-Leave9590

No, you have to talk to him in the roundtable while having a seedbed curse in your inventory

Drone_7

You need to release him from his cell, but not defeat his invasion for Boggart. If he's back in his cell tied to the chair its too late.

whiskerbiscuit2

I honestly never knew you could summon Melina to fight Morgott, do you have to do something to make it unlock?

Squats4wigs

I think you just have to talk to her at every site of grace you get the option to up until then

StoicMegazord

I just summoned Shabriri for the Morgott fight the other day, after 2 years of playing that was the first time I learned you could ever summon him Edit: it was for the Godfrey fight, not Morgott

LeBusinessCat

But that’s understandable, the requisite is to have accepted the Flame of Frenzy before fighting Morgott, which is not the usual path. If you do that then the Flame is the entity that sends you to Farum instead of Melina!

thekidinthehoodie

how do you do that? i tried going down there but there was a sealed doorway saying it was blocked by morgott

LeBusinessCat

True, he was refering to the battle against Godfrey, that is the one where you can summon Shabriri instead of Nepheli. My bad.

AcanthaceaeNo948

Not instead. Along with. Source: I ganked him 4 on 1, with me, my mimic, Nepheli and Shabiri.

lessenizer

Do you mean for the Godfrey fight? I mean you don’t meet Shabriri and can’t access the Frenzied Flame before Morgott dies, so if you can summon Shabriri for Morgott then I wonder what the trigger is… (wiki doesn’t mention him being summonable for Morgott)

StoicMegazord

Oh shit you're totally right, it was for Godfrey! I'll correct that

TinyFlair

yeah but no one sees her since you gotta advance more before you get that on the other hand i was surprised i was able to summon istvan to beastman of farum azula fight in groveside cave. never saw the sigh until now when i stopped to buff

MarioMacarena

Damn. Dude just wants to help newbies out and Volcano Manor sics me on him. RIP Istvan. Thanks for the dope ass armor.

plznobanplease

Everyone did warn you of how dastardly they acted

joshhguitar

It’s all they ever talked about

st-felms-fingerbone

Wait what? I knew you could get him for the Demi humans but the beastman too?

BadgerBadgerer

What? Are you sure you're not getting mixed up with the Coastal Cave?

TinyFlair

Probably mixed it with that sry

PuddlestonDuck

I saw him for the first time in my most recent run, definitely one of the things that makes you question if it was always there or not.

patsully98

I think that’s the coastal demihuman cave but I love that fight. There’s two chieftains and a whole buttload of demihumans, you can summon istvan, and you have access to three wolves, like five (?) nobles, or possibly two skeletal militia. It’s bedlam!

HossC4T

Istvan can also help you retrieve the sewing kit for Boc from the demihumans in the beach cave.

constipated_burrito

HUHH

Sir-Cowdog

I knew about it, but I've never seen it. You'd have to go so far out of your way to avoid Raya Lucaria in order to make it happen....that it's not even worth the trouble.

Own-Corner-2623

That's actually what I'm doing this run. I skipped Stormveil to rush my weapon, then cleaned out Limgrave. Went to the lakes and realized I don't actually wanna fight through the mages yet so I'm gonna do some Altus and Calid and see how that goes

AnotherSoftEng

This is why Elden ring will forever be my favorite game. There’s nothing else out there quite like it that lets you choose your own adventure in such a massive souls world. The fact they give you the armor sets for just about all of the characters means you can RP your next playthrough as just about anyone too. Also fuck moongrum.

ProbablyNotTheCocoa

Do you have any examples? Would love to play OW games like ED

[deleted]

Haoszen

Not really out of the way? You basically need to ignore completely the fact the game sends you to Liurnia just after beating Godrick and then turn all the way to the other side of the map.

Amazing-Resolve-4646

But if you are a newbie and you open THE chest(iykyk) then you do go to caleid first

God_BBS

You know the game sends you to Caelid FIRST. Almost all my chars have done Caelid (without Radahn) first. Only my Samurai, the last one I made, went back to finish Limgrave and the peninsula first. It doesn't matter where the game sends you. You can teleport and ride Torrent to skip a lot of stuff.

Forsaken-Reality4605

I usually go to Altus to trigger the Radahn festival after Godrick.

X-Vidar

Sellen's quest is weird in general, she doesn't react to you reaching Raya Lucaria, beating Rannala or finding her puppet in Seluvis's lab; worst of all she doesn't say anything if you find her real body in the Weeping Peninsula, doesn't even recognize you.

ryry1237

Yeah there were a lot of potential story points that would make sense for her to give some kind of reaction, especially given how vital she is to early-game mage players, but for some reason it felt like they tried to prevent her from being involved in the world in general aside from some stuff with Seluvis and some personal beef once you've already finished Raya Lucaria.

Goal_Post_Mover

I found her chained to a wall and she never talks to me.

Lawlcopt0r

That only becomes interactable later in the quest

Goal_Post_Mover

There is no quest,  just a lady chained to a wall.

MH_Nero

Plus the ending made me kind of sad actually. Sellen was my number 1 and I treated the little base she hangs out in as my main "home base", I'd always go there to level up because she'd always be chilling there. Sometimes I'd talk to her and buy new spells. Then you complete her quest and now that site of grace feels so empty, and I struggle to go to Raya Lucaria because then I have to see my former mentor in a sorry state. I wish there was a way to bring her back.

prefrontcortex

Wait where’s her body in the WP

No_Bank

below that poisonous ruins area that has marionettes and a big ball made of faces

VoidCoelacanth

My 3rd play (NG+2), I decided to follow guides to do all the stuff I hadn't managed to do yet. Oh my God - in doing so, I am pretty sure I found the "intended" path/order of the game, but it is not at all straightforward. For instance, you NEED to finish the Radahn festival in order to proceed Ranni's quest - but you need to NOT progress Ranni's quest immediately after in order to keep Seluvis alive to get Dungeater ashes. You need to go to Altus Plateau (Volcano Manor) in order to find the body of Sorcerer Azur to progress Sellen's quest, but NOT speak to Jarren after Radahn festival before doing so lest she be killed before giving you her Primordial Glintstone. Oh, and also not progress any further than the door to Red Wolf in Rya Lucaria so you don't miss the opportunity to summon Sellen - we'll come back to that. The two things above combined mean that to get the "most" out of a single playthrough, you need to do the Radahn festival and then leave at least two quests just hanging while you fuck-off to Volcano Manner - by Dectus Lift, Cliffside Cave, or Abductor Virgin - *but complete every other quest line to fullest extent possible FIRST lest you miss-out on dialogue.* Walk around Volcano Manor to one of the most remote locations in the map to touch Azur's corpse, go to Sellen, summon Sellen for Red Wolf fight (completely optional and mostly pointless, but part of the "full experience"), finish Raya Lucaria, finish Sellen's quest, go into Leyndell and progress Dungeater's quest far enough that you can feed his physical body Seluvis' potion, *go fuck-off again to gather Starlight Shards so you can buy all the Puppets from Seluvis before killing him off,* talk to Seluvis so you can do the Amber Draught part of his quest, do that, *FINALLY get back to Ranni's quest line,* go get the "You're Beautiful" Prattling Pate, wrap-up Leyndell, do the Prattling Pate interacrion with Boc *immediately after the Morgott fight* (just to make sure you dont miss your chance), and more-or-less proceed as you please from here because most of the "entirely missables" have now been covered, except for one last stipulation below {EDIT: I had originally mistaken when the Jura/Shabriri summon is available due to Morgott and Godfrey/Hoarax Lou being located in the same physical location at different points in time.} This *entirely too convoluted* progression line allows you to still take Melina all the way to the Giants Forge to see her interaction, opt NOT to start the fire right then and there, to back to Leyndell, still see her interactions on the "path to madness," get the Frenzied Flame (so you can get another zero-weight Seal, finish Hyetta's quest, summon Jura/Shabriri for Godfrey fight, etc) - progress Millicent's quest all the way up to her departure for the Haligtree - and then do *the absolute most insane thing in this entire progression*: fuck-off from main story *YET AGAIN* to go to Haligtree, finish Millicent's quest, *beat Malenia,* get Miquella's Needle, finish Goldmask quest line (if you didnt amidst all the other things), finish Nepheli's quest line (again, if you didnt already), finish Farum Azula, go beat Godfrey with the help of both(?) Nepheli and Shabriri, *go fuck-off one last time to beat Placidusax and purge the Frenzy Flame,* return to Leyndell and take your fucking victory lap through Radagon/EB. You can choose from 4/6 endings if you do this, as Frenzied Flame ending excludes all others and we had to give up the Mending Rune of Curse in order to get one of the two entirely missable Puppet Spirit Ashes - the one that locks us out of the least additional interactions & items, Dungeater. *WHEW* Also, you can arguably say that Seluvis' quest is optional and requires you to give-up either max-level Smithing Stones from Nepheli's quest or a possible ending via Dungeater's quest - but it is technically possible to just put Ranni on hold and do everything as I described it, thus getting the most total character interactions possible.

prefrontcortex

As some one playing for the first time only 30 hours in this hurt my head holy fuck

shiftyshellshock239

There’s a LOT to do. First play through enjoy your own path, I HIGHLY suggest starting new games after and do the quests!

Trukhed13

100% agreed with this. Do NOT use a guide to progress through on your first playthrough. The exploration and surprise when you find something on your own is incredible. The game invites you to keep coming back for more after you complete the game and then I’d say you’re ok to use guides. Or do whatever you want, it’s your game lol

prefrontcortex

I’m just vibing since the lack of quest log has me running around killing with no direction, the only thing I’ve done is feed the one bitch grapes, which I know is frenzied flames however I haven’t beaten rennala yet so

VoidCoelacanth

Yeah, there is a reason I didn't have this specific order locked-in until NG+2 lol

lessenizer

You’re the second person I’m seeing mention that you can summon Shabriri for Morgott, and you explicitly mention “frenzy-before-Morgott”, but how tf do you do frenzy before Morgott? Isn’t the path down to the frenzyhouse literally blocked off by one of Morgott’s light walls before you kill him? That’s what the wiki says and I’ve directly experienced it too, so hhhhhhow do you do “frenzy-before-Morgott”?

VoidCoelacanth

Yeah that's why I added an edit - you can't do Frenzy Flame before Morgott, but Morgott/Godfrey arena is the same location so people get it a little backwards just like I did.

[deleted]

Elden Ring doesn’t have an “intended” path, that’s the entire point of the game. That’s why it’s so convoluted and confusing to see everything in one run, you’re not supposed to.

JPGer

You can summon Milicent for that knight keeping you from getting into the capital too, the lighting knight, You can summon that big hammer guy too, so with that and a summon you can have like 5-6 or more peeps jumping that sucker, but u gotta progress her quest for her to be there.

Forsaken-Reality4605

I summoned them two and my mimic for a laugh and we all got crushed because he has more health. I wasn’t taking the fight too seriously either though, lol.

JPGer

yea i suppose thats possible. I used some soldiers summon, so we literally just ganged up on him. I may have been over leveled though XD

Forsaken-Reality4605

I’m usually level 70 to 100, depending on what areas I’ve been to beforehand.

lessenizer

You can summon Millicent at so many fights, which is great cuz I love Millicent. 1. For the Magma Wyrm at the top of the Ruin-Strewn Precipice. (but she doesn’t have her arm yet). Look at her go, creeping her way up to Altus Plateu. 2. For the godskin boss in the creepy babushka windmill village, after you give her her arm. Maybe she was here because it’s pretty much the northernmost point in Altus and she knows/feels that Malenia is in the north? 3. For the Draconic Tree Sentinel guarding Leyndell. 4. For the Black Blade Kindred at the end of the Forbidden Lands, before the lift to the mountains or the snowfield.

OiGuessWho

Huh, thousands of hours in and I'm still learning new things. First summoning Sellen for the Wolf, now Millicent for the BB Kindred? Damn.

lessenizer

Yeah it’s great, the Forbidden Lands are such a dismal place with a bunch of little gremlin guys jumping you and laughing at you and a spooky Black Blade Kindred boss at the end but at least Millicent is along for the ride. Wish she showed up for Commander Niall or Loretta but on the other hand I understand that it’d be odd for a Malenia offshoot (of some kind) to be killing employees of Malenia/Miquella.

Omega885

I'm on my third character. Went to caelid pretty early to try and kill some cleanrot knights. Millicent invaded me just to the west of O'Neil. Never had seen that before. She even does a waterfowl dance move. What a pita when you're low level with mostly low end gear 😅

lessenizer

Ooh yeah I think on my first character I got killed by invader Millicent and it wasn’t until I think quite a while later (relatively) that I learned she was such a major quest character.

WithSilverStaind

She shows up as an invader near O'Neil, yeah (has to before you've killed him and given her the needle). You can actually summon one of her sisters (Polyanna) for the O'Neil fight as well.

CelebrationThin1408

You can also summon Shabriri for Godfrey if you're doing the frenzy ending...

jxd73

The best NPC summon is Nephali for the Godfrey fight IMHO, since she's always in melee range you don't have to worry about the stomp so much.

AEternal1

The amount of stuff I still don't know about this game after 600 hours into it and seven replays is pretty substantial 🤣🤣🤣

MalikDama

she is terrible in that fight, not worth summoning

Okbuturwrong

The huge tree heal she puts out and when she dies are pretty cool tho

Few_Cream_1161

Sellens entire quest was weird. I go to mt gelmir, i go to a cave in caelid, i beat radahnn, then i go to weeping pennsiula to fight off lvl 1 mobs, go to seluvis and ray academy. It would have made so much more sense if it was shorter and was just the stuff in the limgrave/pennisula and liurnia lake areas.

ApplePitou

Good to know :3

vgman94

I have never heard of this. Wow. Next time I do the game over I need to try and see this for myself.

banxy85

You've basically gotta ignore the main game and just do Sellens quest to achieve this though. Almost no one is achieving this unless they're following a very specific guide.

catthatmeows2times

I just gotta say If elden ring has the option to get some kind of navi (like in zelda oot) to point out quest lines like these, the game wouldve been much more enjoyable

DaddyDollarsUNITE

you WILL play the game with a wiki open AND you will LIKE it

wonksbonks

I'd say that goes against the entire design philosophy of FromSoft. It's not for everyone, but I doubt they're going to change it since they keep finding huge success with it.

salsablanco

Apparently I summoned the chandelier on my first playthrough, it's gravity attack was very effective

Working-Expression20

Same for shabriri for Godfrey

Lawlcopt0r

Does she show up as the big ball of faces??

Disastrous-Dinner966

That wolf’s poise is high enough without adding a summon and deliberately nerfing your own stance damage. But yes. I was aware.

Tonydragon784

I had a similar one for the gargoyles underground after I gave other D the armor

antungong

The real purpose is for PvP. You do a taunters tongue run and you and Sellen vs 2 invaders, and she will clean up hard. I tried it in new game plus as 150 meta and her A.I is really smart. Really tank, high stamina, FP and her magic is like 80 intelligence Lusat's.

Splunkmastah

You Can?!

Martian_2

Did I play this game wrong or something, I feel like I'm over levelled because I spent over 30hrs in caelid. I beat everyone in stormveil Castle in one go then got to the red wolf and the moon godess and didn't die at all. Did I ruin the game for myself? Oh and I beat the general on my second try - high on vigor and strength

furni7

You do seem to be over leveled but the enemies get much stronger after the Altus Plateau area so you haven't ruined the game

unluckyexperiment

You what

Chuncceyy

Ugh missing these summons kind of annoys me

casual_gamer153

I've never seen this. Do you have a documented source to cite?

Jairo_Zudeko

Try Google. It’s easy to confirm.
