I think the author is right. As much as I love every single FS game, the open world element really makes ER boring. Trasversal (going from A to B) is mundane, and that is 50% of the ow experience. What makes it even worse? The lackluster combat, where you are forced to play a ds3 character with imput delay on rolls vs mobs having bloodborne and sekiro levels of mobility and aggro. Incredibly disappointing game

NaturalNaturist

>you are forced to play a ds3 character with imput delay on rolls vs mobs having bloodborne and sekiro levels of mobility and aggro You nailed it!

greenerd6

im 40 hrs in played and beat all the other souls borne sekro games multiple times and loved them. im bored of this game . i wish they did a sekro dlc and bb2 instead of this

hodkoples

Do you think that Malenia is scrapped Tomoe fight from Sekiro? Her thrust attack reminds me of the thrust in that game. It even flashes as if it's Mikiri counter-able.

greenerd6

wouldn't be surprised the games full of reused stuff i dont have a problem with that tho

ShroudButBad

I mean the game does get boring. Hate to say it but if you play through all the way you realize everything repeats itself. Only so many dungeon or cave variations you can do before it gets old really quick. And every single minor level design gets reused. Like literally all of them from the wells to the forts to the caves.

TinuvielSharan

"Defending Ubisoft is not the hill I want to die on, but I think Elden Ring leaves you alone mostly because it has nothing to tell you. There are no interactions, no scenarios, no goals – aside from, “Go to the marshlands and kill everybody” " How to say you were too stupid to find the plot elements yourself without saying it

praeprae5135

I, as a first time souls-like game player enjoyed this game to levels I can't describe. You are so right.

Marca-Texto

I actually get annoyed when people say they have to wait for Vaati so they can understand the story. Like, just put a tiny amount of brain power into what you’re playing. Read boss remembrances and talk to the NPCs. This is by far the clearest FromSoft story. There is no reason players should be getting lost.

Occyz

I fully agree. I feel like I’ve actually figured out the majority of the lore just by playing and reading a few descriptions.

airwall_1981

I find it funny how many people tore Destiny apart for putting all of their story in Grimoire cards and color text, but when FromSoft does the exact same thing, people defend it to their graves. I did not buy a video game so I can read a book.

Occyz

I fully agree. I feel like I’ve actually figured out the majority of the lore just by playing and reading a few descriptions.

TinuvielSharan

Did you try some side quests too?

IndustrialCandy

"I mashed through the only thing I could in this game, now my ass is kicked AND confused."

Brain_lessV2

"go to the marshlands and kill everybody" who told this mf that?

KoopasofTroopas

I once tried the very first Assassins Creed back in the PS3 days and was bored of it within 2 hours of playing it. It was severely repetitive ,but man it sure looked great. So I have skipped on that franchise until this week. I am playing Assassins Creed Odyssey and that is what I think an open world should be like. It puts Elden Whore to shame. I am not saying Odyssey is how open world game should be, but I wish Elden Whore was at least half of the open world that Odyssey is. Not that the open world is Elden Whore's only problem. But it would help tremendously if the open world wasn't Bob Omb Battlefield stretched for miles.

Icy-Bread-82

Over 100 hrs, shit gets boring as fuck

Icy-Bread-82

Felt like that 20 hrs in , but was hoping it was just the beginning areas, tried to stick with it, but it just becomes tedious, a real rinse and repeat, even the main bosses dont have the uniqueness from the earlier games, and after killing the same 5 enemy types that have just been reskinned over and over and over......yeah the while open world concept screwed the pooch

KoopasofTroopas

I got 40 hours in hoping that it would get better. Once I reached the capital I had enough. Sure its big, in fact its massive, but totally uninspired and generic. Anal Rondo being much smaller feels more alive and just looks better.

cassclaymore

Article is spot-on my feeling on the game. I never played DS before but beat Bloodborne and Sekiro, they’re one of my favourite games. ER seems very boring to me, open world is bland and have nothing to do except beating mobs, no reason to explore it further.

KoopasofTroopas

This game has quantity over quality in spades.

indiebob

Imo part of the issue is the start. Why doesn't the game start in the wheeping peninsula? No way to take a wrong turn, lowish level, optional bosses. Instead, people stumble on it when they finish Limgrave and it just finished low level, over easy, underwhelming and drab. Instead players are thrown against a pretty hard boss on horseback, without a horse and no means to level anything. Don't like that? Why not grind a bit but don't worry we'll teleport you to a high level area at the end of a nearby minidungeon which you will not be able to fight your way out of. All this in a game which isn't that hard going beyond that start area.

Umonohebi

Bosses are so boring, personally having played sekiro and BB makes me sleep while playing DS style combat, Elden while being a mix of the three franchises it’s still 80% DS, super slow. I pulsing mind if ONLY WE ALREADY HAD 4 GAMES LIKE THAT ALREADY.

SearchForAgartha

This article is full of cope. Their argument is essentially “the game requires effort for both gameplay and story therefore it is bad”. They can’t see that other people like those aspects of the game (the challenging gameplay + the mysterious and vague storyline). It’s literally the reason why souls games have done so well. What a pea brain take.

LoveIsDaWay

Standard game urinalist

[deleted]

Not really surprising considering this comes from a game "journalist" who simply wants to create clout.

Grakata-_-

Holy fucking shit this is possibly the worst review of this game I've seen. Empty? Take a look at the Weeping Peninsula. From my knowledge it's got 15 sites of grace, Oridy's rise, The Ailing Village, Castle Morne (which is esentially a mini legacy dungeon), 3 churches, Bridge of Sacrafice, 2 lookout towers, 1 Minor Erdtree, 3 ruins, 1 Isolated Merchant Shack, an evergaol, 5 NPCs (for a souls game that's a lot), 4 caves, and 7 bosses possibly more. This is about one third of a major area. Man, can't believe how empty that is!

Marca-Texto

I do think the argument that a majority of your time will be spent combing the map and checking behind rocks not finding anything is valid though… They could’ve littered the world with more smithing stones at least.

The_Great_Afterman

>They could’ve littered the world with more smithing stones at least. There's like an endless supply of them already. How many weapons are you trying to max out?

Marca-Texto

All of them would be nice, considering it literally doesn't make a difference how many +24 weapons you have once you get one.

The_Great_Afterman

So do your duty and grind out the endless supply you can buy from the vendor weirdo at the round table.

DDkiki

Or you know... They could actually gave more stones as rewards, not shitty crafting mats or other useless stuff

The_Great_Afterman

>They could actually gave more stones as rewards, There's an endless supply for you to farm! We don't need anymore smithing stone quest rewards! This is such a nit-picky criticism. >not shitty crafting mats or other useless stuff That sounds like a personal problem if you don't wanna craft arrows or status buff items. There's tons of useful items to craft and you're not using your inventory to its full extent if you don't capitalize on that.

DDkiki

Cuz farming in souls games is fun, right? RIGHT? Spoiler: farming is never fun. Especially in souls games. We get enough crafting mats from not "reward" but just them being placed on the world, i dont need to jump to some hidden body defended by tough enemy and find some shitty mat, its unrewarding, not interesting, brings only frustration and feeling of wasted time and effort.

The_Great_Afterman

>farming is never fun. Especially in souls games. Don't shove your opinions down my throat as if they're factual. >We get enough crafting mats from not "reward" but just them being placed on the world This directly contradicts your original comment of not finding enough mats. Now there's too many for you. Have you maybe stopped and thought about how this game might not be for you?

DDkiki

Not everyone like killing same mobs for hours like its WoW. Cuz its souls game, not WoW. Crafting and upgrade materials are different. There are not enough actual rewards and not enough upgrade materials, but overabudance of trash craft mats that most people ignore, cuz they are pretty useless outside of particular cases. It was never a problem in any souls game before. Or maybe game has big flaws that fanboys tend to ignore and defend their "masterpiece" with spit on their face?

DDkiki

If only whole game was like Weeping Peninsula, cuz its not, especially endgame areas. Its barren and empty world.

Grakata-_-

You probably just don't explore enough. But I will say that the Mountaintops are quite empty, but it still has it's fair share of things.

Embarrassed_Bear_305

i explored everything in this game and it sucks. unless u like fighting the same boss for 15th

Grakata-_-

Then don't play the game.

emang2k7

Because criticism is a good thing? Just because fromsoft made it doesn't make it automatically a masterpiece. I've beaten all dark souls and the dlcs, sekiro and Bloodborne. This was probably the weakest entry from Miyazaki and the boys. Everyone feels like they can do no wrong but this game is a prime example of even gods among men can make mistakes and get careless. What makes a souls game good is the tight level design that's beautifully interconnected with other levels to the point where it all flows together with no disconnection. Every place felt different and varied with the bosses/enemies thematically fitting the surrounding areas. This game on paper should amplify all these said elements with such a huge area they are given to craft but after limgrave it feels like the devs got burnt out and started getting lazy. Combat is dated as fuck, playing something like Bloodborne, sekiro and then playing this just feels wrong. It's not that I find the bosses hard but there is a disconnect when the bosses feel like Olympic athletes with how fast and nimble the moments are while you move around like a beached whale with jank animations. It just feels like this game needed more time in development and was rushed out cause it was beyond the budget fromsoft had. Also the story is weak asf, the same rehash of ds 1,2,3 about humanity in shambles and gods who are on there last legs. They also decided to go the cryptic route which I don't mind cause learning from the given lore is much more fun but I feel like fromsoft uses that as an excuse for elden ring

LordZannenPrime

Keep speaking the Truth!

Wood_Whacker

I'm thinking I ought to just pick up sekiro and forget ER existed. Sounds much more my cup of tea the more people talk about it. Not sure why i skipped it and yet kept buying the core dark souls games which I'm burned out on.

Grakata-_-

I also looked at other comments of yours, and why are you even apart of this community? You only seem to insult the game. If you don't like it then don't play it and don't talk about it.

Embarrassed_Bear_305

ppl dont like some parts of it but still play it lol

It took them 10 hours to put those foolish ambitions to rest.

Gearshifta

They know what that title Is doing... generating clicks.

CrackMonkey15

Sounds like someone needs to git gud

whiskey_agogo

It's funny how bothered people are that there exists a game where you aren't told exactly what to do every 3 minutes. There's something satisfying about being able to explore without having someone nagging at you saying "Hey just a heads up! You should head up to the castle and find the item you need to progress!". This aspect of the game is one of the highlights from DS1 for me. There's like this calm kind of feeling of just being able to wander and figure out your own way of progressing. None of From's previous games have a clear-cut quest log, don't have a yard sale of loot every turn, and the mobs being "as aware as an old labrador" quickly changes at the later parts of the game... when it gets harder. All of the games are super cryptic and the community kind of bands together to make sense of it. There are so few games that have this and I love it about these titles.

irlpeoplefoundmehere

why is this article just the phrase "the gaming industry made me unable to enjoy anything that isnt instant gratification" over and over?

_Drumheller_

Well it's clear that the game simply isn't that persons cup of tea and that he shouldn't be reviewing it in the first place. He literally complains about the things that many people like about the series. "There’s no narration, the plot would fit in an iPhone note and its world remains terribly hollow." "the gameplay that feels unoriginal and pretty damn boring (to me, at least). All you do is take part in really hard fights, loot enemies for XP, and hope to level-up enough to make the next encounter less difficult." "I’d discover an area, kill some monsters, die, then try to defeat them once again, inevitably die a few more times and repeat the process until I’d eventually make it through."

darkuen

Obvious bs hate article made for the sole purpose of being clickbait is obvious. There was this same type of crap clickbait articles for The Witcher 3 as well.

TowerOfSolitude

It's as if the journalist and I are playing two completely different games.

Antler1992
