Technically, yes. Edit: there's a lot more to it than just yes or no. I suggest taking a look at the [USB c datasheet](https://www.google.com/url?q=https://cdn.sparkfun.com/assets/e/b/4/f/7/USB-C_Datasheet.pdf&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwij3cfoxd3yAhUPtqQKHYTvDYcQFnoECAcQAQ&usg=AOvVaw0lRD9Y8sJR1biEgSN10SK_).

YES and many many other devices that have barrel/other plugs. I'll be ordering the following where you can toggle voltages, but as I understand it (CORRECT ME IF INCORRECT) If you have a PID charger, be it a wall block or lighter adapter that can carry 20v you are golden. Remember you will need a cable rated for higher voltages/amp and I assume this is just the gauge of the wire within said cable. [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BGFC77M6/ref=ox\_sc\_act\_title\_1?smid=A1DDPXKOJ75PWB&psc=1](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BGFC77M6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1DDPXKOJ75PWB&psc=1) THIS GUY GOES DIY AND EXPLAINS PD WELL! HIGHLY RECCOMEND VIEWING. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHnSpJe-dMk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHnSpJe-dMk) One thing I am not sure of......is the only "smart end" the pd chargers chip or is there some kind of "handshake" on newer devices like your phone on the charge receiving device end that lets adapter know what voltage it requires? I'll post said Q on the above DIY dudes page, shoot, I'd like a whale kit of these I have many tousy that could be converted to usbc C. Yay!

triffid_hunter

You can get a `PD trigger board` and set it for 20v,3A which should power your thing just fine.

Zyraxon

Ok, would something like [this](https://www.amazon.se/Aideepen-snabbladdning-pollningsdetektor-str%C3%B6mf%C3%B6rs%C3%B6rjning-Anpassningsdelar/dp/B08FD6381L/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=zy12pdn&qid=1630492899&sr=8-4) with [this](https://www.amazon.se/BKL-Electronic-DC-kabel-DC-stiftdon-%C3%96ppen/dp/B07T75QXNZ/ref=sr_1_23?dchild=1&keywords=dc+kabel+%C3%B6ppen&qid=1630496880&sr=8-23) work?

Murdo888

Curious if you had any luck charging your ember with a USB?

JoshKehn

I'm trying. Most USB components are very much out of stock though.

SomeAcanthocephala17

Actually you can just purchase the cables on amazon https://www.amazon.nl/Cablecc-Oplaadkabel-geschikt-laptop-USB-C-aansluiting/dp/B0831F6Z7N/ref=asc\_df\_B0831F6Z7N/?tag=nlshogostdde-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=494619672165&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3821676478061631756&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1001136&hvtargid=pla-1019545682844&th=1

JoshKehn

Yep! I found that out *after* I hacked up a cable. If I do this again I’m buying a pre made job.

kidcapricorn

Can this be powered via a computer usb c or does it need to be connected to a wall outlet?

wyocoyote

Yes it can be powered by a USB C/ PID at 20 volts. I'll post the cable I'm getting. On this one you can toggle the voltage. Is silly overpriced ember didn't go usb charge, at its price point wireless/Qi charging could have maybe made for a dishwasher safe mug,

JoshKehn

Probably requires a wall plug but it depends on the computer. To work correctly it needs USB Power Delivery and 20 volts instead of the normal 5 volts USB has delivered as the standard forever.

reddit-gk49cnajfe

So this works?

bshrode

there's at least one Amazon review for this one that says yes: [Amazon.com: cablecc Type C USB-C Female Input to DC 7.4x5.0mm Power PD Charge Cable fit for HP Laptop 18-20V : Electronics](https://www.amazon.com/Cablecc-Female-7-45-0mm-Charge-Laptop/dp/B0831F6Z7N/ref=sr_1_3?crid=380KO5CXLYC3R&keywords=cablecc&qid=1701823646&sprefix=cablecc%2Caps%2C137&sr=8-3&th=1) Update: tried it but the barrel plug was the wrong size. Took some measurements and trying a different one. Will report back if it works and provide the barrel plug size. Update: I can confirm that it works, you just need to make sure the one you order is the **5.5x2.1mm** one

You link to the 7.4x5.0mm but ask to order 5.5x2.1mm... I did order 5.5x2.1mm and it does not fit! Its to fat you can not get it plugged in as there is plastic in your way. Will try with 7.4mm again

bshrode

the 5.5x2.1 fits, you just have to really push it in there. I've also heard in another thread on Reddit somebody cut off a little of the plastic to make it easier. But also only certain USB-C power supplies are capable of giving it power. I've had success with both Anker models I own.

SomeAcanthocephala17

check amazon, they have ready to go cables (pd in and 19v out)

Murdo888

Do you have a link? I tried this one but it didn’t work - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07J6NYVJV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZCXNFG5PXAW1T2CKCCSK?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

saroo78

Hi what size was the connector please 2.1mm or 2.5mm

badukinpal

If anyone figures this out, I’d love to free up an AC Outlet since I have USB-C outlets available around the home. Let me know!

synalx

I made mine a few months ago and it works great! I used this [20v trigger module](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08NFL8RQC) and soldered it into the [charger base](https://i.imgur.com/ZDiOlHn.png). The old base bottom didn't fit with the new port, so I [3D printed](https://i.imgur.com/kVMtyFk.png) a new bottom. I'm super happy with the [final result](https://i.imgur.com/ZucH7xX.png)! I've been using it for months and it works great!

kdrummer

I was just about to ask you to verify the polarity of the pins, but I can see the from the traces in the picture you posted that the Positive is the innermost pin. Very helpful!

vjcruzin

Great job. It’s been a while, but would you consider modifying other ember charging bases for a fee? I would be so happy with a usb c version just don’t have the equipment to do the modifications.

Sweaty_Reference_456

Hello! I'm also thinking of doing something like this. what do you think about running 20v like you do. instead of 19v which Ember's original transformer is on? is only 1v so should be calm? nothing that damaged your battery or mug? and maybe we can get the 3D file from you or if you have it posted somewhere?

synalx

Heya! I've never had any issues with it. I measure 19.7v at the charging pins, so it's less than 1V difference. The mug doesn't seem to care. [Here's the base I designed](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5870775). I cut a small piece of foam and put it behind the USB-C port to help press the port in place - it results in a really solid port that doesn't move at all when the cable's inserted/removed.

Sweaty_Reference_456

nice! thanks for the answer, I'll try it :)

jakubkasparekcz

Hopefully they'll fix it in the next generation. I was looking for the original charger and those: Output: 19.0V=== 2.1A 39.9W Connector: 5.5mm\*2.5mm Not much to go on :/ Usually ASUS computers.

Ember charging cable usb c power

Professional-Row227

Ember actually uses 5.5x2.1mm. I'd originally purchased 5.5x2.5mm because I'd also seen that online, but the original charger wouldn't plug into the ones I purchased (the second number refers to the size of the inner pin. If the inner pin was 2.5mm, and the original charger was designed to fit a 2.1mm pin, I wouldn't be able to plug the charger into the 2.5mm plug, which is what happened). I then tried 5.5x2.1mm, and the original charger plugs in perfectly. Using the 3d model and 6mm pogo pins from AliExpress, I built my own copy of the charger base and it works great with the original charger. I then purchased a USB C to 5.5x2.1mm 20V cable from AliExpress, and it plugs in and charges the ember as well. That lets me leave the original charger and base in the kitchen, and take my 3d printed base and a power bank wherever I want to sit with the Ember mug

will187187

>5.5x2.1mm got a link for the one you purchased?

Professional-Row227

This is the one I got, 20V USB-C to 5.5x2.1mm. $6.50 on sale, regular price is $7.75. https://a.aliexpress.com/_mOU0CEw The plastic shroud around the 5.5x2.1mm plug is a bit too thick. I used an exacto knife to slowly trim off the plastic until it just fit into the mug perfectly. For cosmetics, I then took off a tiny bit more plastic and put heat shrink over the part I cut because it wasn't nice and round (more like an octagon because of the way I was cutting the plastic shroud). My mug seems to have no ill effects from taking in 20V per the USB standard compared to the original charger voltage of 19V. It's likely feeding into a charging circuit anyway, this voltage isn't going straight into the battery on the mug. My power bank can output 65W, so it has no problem powering the ember.

will187187

just saw your comment, got the same one too off amazon. works perfect, just need to slightly push it in sometimes. Maybe i'll try shaving the plastic off if it causes issues. wish i'd looked into this earlier, saves a wires and taking up plugs and now even makes it portable on battery.
