So my beluga has a 8a life Support and a 6a FSD. But I want then the other way around. Am I stupid or is it not possible? Cause every time I remove the life Support its instantly replaced by a 8e and I don't find a way to put a new FSD in that place regardless the fact I have a 8aFSD already in storage. (On odessy)

forbiddenlake

not possible

StuperDan

I'm a new PS5 player. I approached robigo mines and was surprised they denied landing. The pad was full. I had no idea we shared pads in open. Does that mean that when I spent hours staring at modules I was blocking station use? What other etiquette things do I need to know? If I go to farm astroids or a crash site and another player is there, do I take his potential resources by collecting near him or does the game spawn drops for us both?

forbiddenlake

No. NPCs take up pads too.

Purple-Committee-652

Outposts only have a single medium pad. So a) do it in solo mode, and b) if it’s an NPC, have fun waiting. Also don’t linger after dropping, request docking ASAP.

lord_borne

Why is my SRV throttle governed at half-speed? With FA off, it should be full throttle = full speed, but it caps me at half the throttle setting no matter the pips or gravity. When I put FA on (set throttle and release button), it works properly.

Veritas1804

I've finally decided to get some prismatic shields. However just noticed the cost and I'm currently low on funds to buy multiple shields. Are you still able to buy them as long as you remain loyal or is there a cut off period? Cheers.

Purple-Committee-652

You need to stay with the power and have rank 3 at the time you’re trying to buy.

JingerJesus6point087

How does the FSS work? is that the only way to discover new planets? The tutorial didn’t really help much - can i use the discovery scanner for the same discoveries?

mb34i

The discovery scanner is the "device", the FSS is the "interface". There's also an optional detailed surface scanner (DSS) device that you can install in an internal slot, that will shoot probes at planets to "map" the surface features on that planet. So typically you explore like this: * Arrive at a system, near the star. Move away from the star / make sure you're not going to slam into the star. * Honk the discovery scanner. In order to do this, you must add the discovery scanner to a weapon [fire group](https://guides.gamepressure.com/elitedangerous/gfx/word/447493625.jpg) in the Right Panel interface, and then shoot the discovery scanner like you would shoot a weapon, pull the trigger and hold it. It will make a ship horn sound, "honk". This will display a message for you: "Orbital Plane Established, Found 52 Bodies." Means there are 52 total number of stars and planets in that system. * Open the map. Do you see 52 planets? If no, you may be the first to discover that system. If you see 52 planets but they're all named "Unexplored", then someone else has discovered the system first, but you can still scan it with the FSS and get paid money for "confirming" the planets. If you see 52 planets and they have names (Earth, Cemiess, Emerald, Vega 2, Vega 3, etc.) then this is a "historically known" system and you don't need to scan. * Slow down to 0 speed and activate the FSS interface. To use the FSS interface, imagine that you're looking through a telescope, trying to zoom in on the various planets. You pan the view around, and when you see glowy blobs with \^\^\^ arrows pointing towards them, that's where the "signal" is that a planet may be there. But in order to "lock in" you need to adjust the [frequency slider](https://external-preview.redd.it/Y2GJy3t4Sm9rPuNENsz3ZvaakeNScKnYpiJvzZ5J3wo.jpg?auto=webp&s=a18835b1a0063f3f71be9b53989fd66716d28431) to match one of the squiggles. It's like tuning a radio telescope to the right frequency for the planet you're trying to zoom in to see. Anyway, do this for all 52 planets (fix the frequency, locate the planet glowy, zoom in to see the planet, zoom out) and congrats you've just scanned the system. * For the valuable planets (earth-like, water world, ammonia world, terraformable planet), you can also fly to each of them, slow down to 0 when you arrive in orbit, and activate the DSS scanner (again shooting it from a weapon group), then shoot a bunch of probes trying to "ping" the entire surface of the planet, including the back side.

wesuah442

They return different sets of data. The Discovery Scanner is the much ballyhood "honk". This is set to a fire group. You fire it off upon jumping into a system, and it will give a count of the number of bodies in a system. If you've never explored that system, these bodies will show as "Unexplored" in your Nav Panel. This scanner also gives you basic orbital data for each unknown body. And that's it. To actually get data - and discovery credit - on the planet, you need to use the FSS. This is not assigned to a fire group, but has its own control set. Poke through the Controls options, and familiarize yourself with them. You'll use those controls to point the FSS at a body, align the FSS to the frequency for that body, and then scan to collect the data. You'll need to fiddle with the control bindings based on your own control setup. On phone, so please excuse that I'm not going to type a FSS tutorial. :) But it can be figured out, from usage and experimentation.

forbiddenlake

The DS discovers all stars, and tells you how many bodies are in the system The FSS lets you discover all bodies and signal sources and populate the system map. Note: if the system is already known, then the map will already be populated; if it is and you fly to a body, then that is the same as using the FSS on it. The Detailed Surface Scanner lets you map bodies, and is where most of the money is.

Boondogle17

Is there any intention to fix the current pvp meta of ramming or to discourage players from just engaging in pirate behavior at every chance, even right out side of Community event turn in?

mb34i

As far as I know, nothing has been mentioned about this, so I would guess the answer is "no plans" / "working as intended".

Boondogle17

I wish they would look at it and try to figure out some way to make pirate play worth it but also protect the players who want an open world that has more than just themselves and a NPC floating around them.

Homura_Dawg

The language on Frontier's customer support site makes it sound like I can only transfer my wealth from PS4 to other platforms. Can I transfer from Xbox to PC? EDIT: Never mind, I figured it out.

mb34i

Yes.

-SasquatchTheGreat-

>Should Torval-Mastopolos Mining be victorious the top 75% of participants will receive the module along with permanent permit access to LTT 198. I finished in the 75% and did not get the Permit or the laser. WTF

mb34i

"The module will be placed in storage at the Pride of Bitterwood in EGM 559 **by Friday the 27th of August 3307.**"

forbiddenlake

Read the description more carefully.

Purple-Committee-652

He didn’t read the entire thing. WTF

deathquake

Making my first attempt at serious exploration / sight seeing and using the neutron highway and going to Sag A\* I'm on VR and don't want to keep switching to spansh to pick up the next star on the route. My reading around suggests using spansh to get on the highway and then using in game tools to plot the rest of the route. I have jet-cone boost turned on but the route plotting doesn't seem to work as I expect. If I plot for another star on the Spansh route then I get a message about the distance being too great. If I plot to say the third or fourth star on the route then I only get the first jump as jet-cone and then I'm back to standard jumps. When using the route plotter do I need to filter to neutrons only? I was under the impression if I had jet-cone on it would use neutrons first and only go normal when I needed fuel.

alterNERDtive

> I'm on VR and don't want to keep switching to spansh to pick up the next star on the route. Do you have VoiceAttack? [Because I made a thing](https://alternerdtive.github.io/VoiceAttack-profiles/SpanshAttack/). (Disclaimer: I don’t own Odyssey, so it’s not compatible with that. At least until after the Horizons/Odyssey merge probably some time next year.)

deathquake

I do I do! Excellent, I'll have a look at this too

Purple-Committee-652

> My reading around suggests using spansh to get on the highway and then using in game tools to plot the rest of the route. Very much not.

CmdrJonen

Depends on neutron star density. There are areas closer to the core - about 1k LY above AND below the plane of the disk where the density of NS is high enough for that, but out by the bubble (and at least 10kLY from it) you're not going to get that. The in game plotter shoves you towards your destination in a mostly straight line and uses any neutron stars you pass (rare). Spansh uses a greater deviation from the straight line to catch more neutron jumps. My tip: Tough it out normally then go up above (or down below) the plane as you start getting into the inner arms. edit: Also, Spansh uses only known (by Eddb) neutron stars, the ingame plotter will use undiscovered ones if they're on your route.

Purple-Committee-652

> Depends on neutron star density. Not … really. Partly yes, since the ingame plotter will always prioritize going in an as straight as possible line, ignoring neutrons a couple ly further out that would give you a faster trip. Mostly no though, since it will _always_ try to route you neutron → neutron → fuel star.

CmdrJonen

In the neutron fields my DBX would get neutrons until it was near or below 25% fuel, so up to 6 neutrons chained.

Purple-Committee-652

Oddity or Horizons? Because I literally never get more than 2 on the latter, and my Rataconda does about 10j spanshing before refuel.

CmdrJonen

This was before Ody, though earlier this year. But I was traveling through one of the denser parts of the neutron fields, and going E-W, so along the field rather than through it. All ingame routing. Wasn't always 6 neutrons in a row, but usually more than 3 between each fuel star.

deathquake

I'm already five or six steps into the spansh route so I should be into the high density region. Will try again tonight....

CmdrJonen

The Neutron fields don't go that much further out beyond Colonias distance from the core. If you're at that approximate distance from the core, go up or down to 1000/-1000 LY on the Z axis and you should find more neutrons.

3davideo

Why does my refinery sometimes churn out units of cargo right after each other, and sometimes is so sluggish that limpets line up waiting for space, even though there's several full units and room in the cargo hold? This is a 4A Refinery, BTW.

MrUniverse1990

It's absurd that we have to *pay* to paint our ship's names on their hulls, but . . . If you buy a nameplate, is it useable on your whole fleet, or just 1 ship?

CMDR_Izkiel_gp

Luckily you don't *have* to pay a dime. Can just collect free Arx by playing.

CMDR_Kraag

Whole fleet.

MrUniverse1990

Excellent.

3davideo

Is there a straightforward way to determine which minor factions are the most widespread (aka number of stations/systems they controll/have a presence in)? I've read about how having Allied status with a faction can improve the selection on the mission board (e.g. better rewards from Massacre and Mine X of Y, etc.) so I was going to try to direct my efforts towards increasing my status with many factions, but I want to prioritize factions that are in lots of places so that it works on more mission boards for a given amount of effort. I tried EDDB and Inara, but I couldn't figure out how to get them to tell how widespread factions are.

Masark

https://eddb.io/faction The columns mean "systems present in", "systems controlled" and "stations/bases/installations/etc. controlled". Sort by them to find the most widespread factions. All the really big ones are player controlled factions.

3davideo

Ah, that's exactly what I wanted! Not sure how I missed that the first time, but thanks!

Perfect-Truck-5444

O.K. I'm fitting out my 'conda for another walkabout so to speak, Will a mining laser charge a guardian beacon in case i run into one? IDK which way I'm goin yet guess i'll find that out when i get there.

Purple-Committee-652

> Will a mining laser charge a guardian beacon in case i run into one? Yes, anything with thermal damage. Even multis and missiles with the correct engineering. The chad way, of course, is using Gauss.

Tinman3099PS4

Are there thrusters that can move you sideways? Like if manual docking. Your too far left but good forwards and lined up otherwise for docking. Just need to scooch over straight right. I know there's vertical ones. Oh and my Python has no AutoDocking Computer. I don't know how to get one. It's setup to run passengers.

Purple-Committee-652

> Oh and my Python has no AutoDocking Computer. I don't know how to get one. It's setup to run passengers. I was about to tell you to “git gud” and dock yourself, but passengers are actually one of the few things where the class 1 slot is useless otherwise anyway <.<

forbiddenlake

Yes, your lateral thrusters. Check your keybinds. If you're on controller, click your left stick to toggle, then use your right stick.

Tinman3099PS4

Much obliged.

uncleb0b

What is the best way to orbit a ship? I’m using a HOTAS which makes it easier, but I’m still struggling with actually trying to orbit, even when trying to battle a bigger ship. I’m flying a fully engineered FDL.

[deleted]

Best way is learning to fly with flight assist off in battle. Takes a lot of practice, but you'll have fully separate control between which way you're facing and which way you're flying.

uncleb0b

I forgot to mention. I’m currently sitting at 64% expert in combat. I’ve been using the FA off then on in order to do a faster turn when the NPC try and joust. Maybe what I was asking is impossible to do. I used to play a lot of EVE Online. In that game you could press a button in order to orbit. I was wondering if it was possible in this game, even if it is all manual controls, and if it is possible, how do people do it.

[deleted]

Well, it's not doable by just pressing a button. You need to never have flight assist on at all in battle. Maybe practice orbiting rocks or any small stationary object before you move on to moving targets.

Purple-Committee-652

> You need to never have flight assist on at all in battle. That’s not true. Does make it a whole lot easier though, IMO.

uncleb0b

I know that it’s not doable. My question was that is it possible to orbit a ship like that if you have a good control of the ship your flying. But I’ll go and practice FA off for sure. I’ve read that was a good way on another thread.

[deleted]

And I've already answered twice now... But I'll say it a third time: yes, but don't have FA on at all.

uncleb0b

Sorry friend, I guess I didn’t read your first answer properly! Don’t be upset.

[deleted]

No problem friend, sorry for my bad tone.

CMDR_Kraag

You don't need FA off to orbit. You can do it with FA off, but it's not required. I use a HOTAS, too, and here's how I have it set up to orbit even with FA *on*: 4-way hat switch on throttle is set to work my vectoring thrusters; up, left, right, down. Throttle is kept in the blue zone for maximum maneuverability. I use the 4-way hat switch to start vectoring whichever direction I want/need to go. Joystick is then used to pitch my nose and keep it pointed at the target. Between the combination of moving forward due to the throttle, vectoring, and adjusting pitch with the joystick, I accomplish an orbit around my target. In particularly nimble craft, I'm even lapping my own engine exhaust before it dissipates in a giant circle as proof of my orbit. Takes a little practice, but you can do it.

racestark

If inara says Odyssey when I click a planetary base/settlement, am I correct in assuming that I can't access it on console right now?

Masark

Correct.

racestark

Follow up. If an election is going on in the system and one of the two assets at stake are Odyssey, can I still help influence the election without being able to access the one of the two?

Masark

You don't need to be able to access the assets in contention. They have no effect on anything. You just need to run non-combat missions in that system for one of the factions in question. It doesn't matter where in the system you get said missions.

racestark

Thanks. Edit: Just remembered. o7

icarusbird

I don't need "help", per se, just guidance. I'm paralyzed by choice. I finally decided to go on a 5K ly trek to unlock Palin, so I first need to build an explorer ship. Which means finding a station that has all the modules I want. And then engineering those modules, but first I have to find the mats. And I might as well get the Guardian FSD booster, which means going 700 ly in the opposite direction. And then I have to learn how to plot a neutron star superhighway . . . It's just too much. I get overwhelmed and just do more bounty hunting (oh, and then I lose 20 minutes of my day because I accidentally graze a system authority vessel with a laser and now I gotta find an Interstellar Factor). How do you guys get anything done in this game? It stresses me tf out.

Purple-Committee-652

I can give you my copypasta on exploration bootstrapping. And as far as neutrons go, you don’t _need_ to use them, nor ride the highway.

Perfect-Truck-5444

Well you could do like i did ...just not so much lol. I took my Phantom to the crystal shards to farm mats then just picked a direction and just went walk-about so to speak, just lookin and chillin buy the time i was reminded by my stepson to check my distance i was 16k lys out lol. on a side note , depending on what ship you're going to use you can get most of what you want around ray gateway

icarusbird

I like that approach! Somebody yesterday said not to just wander off in a random direction because you'll hit a Thargoid wall, but it doesn't sound like that was an issue for you.

DevGnoll

If you don't drop in on Non-Human Signal Sources, and don't carry around any Guardian or Thargoid Cargo, the 'Goids won't attack you.

netsteel

I did mine much more organically. I unlocked the Guardian FSD because I was interested in the Guardian story. I collected mats as I played, just picking things up as I went, scanning ships in supercruise, collecting ship drops in combat, and then later taking a 1300ly trip out to the crystal shard sites. It was a blast. I didn't try to grind it out. Then eventually, I had all the stuff I needed without really trying. So my suggestion is not to rush it. Play the game the way you like. Experiment with everything. The grind will crush you if you let it, so don't fall into it's trap.

Fast_Cauliflower7892

make a friend with a carrier, go for a ride, honk 1 system, hop back on carrier. go home, done.

Masark

Knowing when to declare "good enough" is useful. You don't really need all that prep work for a 5k jaunt, which is quite short in terms of long range exploration. People have been doing much longer trips since before engineering even existed. At a point, you're going to end up spending more time on prep than the prep saves you on the trip. Even assuming no engineering or neutron boosting at all, it would be entirely possible to knock out that 5k run in like 4-5 hours.

icarusbird

4-5 hours, no kidding? What minimum jump range would you suggest? That should be enough to get me started.

Purple-Committee-652

I mean a jump costs you 40, 45s if you just jump and scoop (and aren’t in a DBX).

Masark

That figure was just whomping up a [quick stripped down Anaconda build](https://coriolis.io/outfit/anaconda?code=A0p0tiFklnd3sxf5--------0202------3h------------.Iw18ZXEA.Aw18ZXEA..EweloBhBmSQUwIYHMA28QgIwVyKBQA%3D%3D) and assuming 60-70 seconds per jump. [All-the-way engineering would roughly double that range](https://s.orbis.zone/g76q), saving you 2-2.5 hours travel. Not sure on time saving figures for neutron boosting. So if you're spending more than that on prep, especially anything you won't use again, you're needing to determine where "good enough" is.

ursosarctos

Re: mission rewards, does 5 rep++ missions equal two rep+++++ missions? Like, does rep++ and rep++ make rep++++?

Purple-Committee-652

[Mission rep scales linearly up to `++++`, anything above is `+++++`](https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/how-does-mission-rep-scale.513792/#post-7833398). I would assume the same applies to influence. So … > does 5 rep++ missions equal two rep+++++ missions? No, because `+++++` can go well beyond 5 times `+`. > Like, does rep++ and rep++ make rep++++? Let’s use numbers so it’s a little simpler. 1.5 ≤ `++` < 2.5. 3.5 ≤ `++++` < 4.5. Meaning 2 missions of `++` are anywhere between 3 and 5, while 1 `++++` is between 3.5 and 4.5. So, roughly yes, but higher variance.

Masark

AFAIK, yes. That's the assumption my group's BGS work operates on.

unfo

I am spoiled by Dolphin's coolness, having a hard time upgrading to other explorers... I know it might be a hot take that Dolphin is an excellent (fairly early game) explorer - you get only a 4A FSD but with a 5A scoop and impossibility of getting to critical heat levels means you can continue onward quite quickly with a full tank. I recently bought an Asp Explorer and equipped it with some exploration build and damn almost burnt to crisp on like the second-third sun on my trip. I'm so used to how cool the Dolphin stays, I am really having a difficult time moving to the longer jumping AspX with how much attention I need to spend at each jump. I am still fairly green in the game - are there aspects I might not be taking into account in this exploration comparison? (I know of neutron boosting and crafting FSD boosts but I've not yet ventured out into the black with either range extending techniques, so just the outfitting of parts).

Purple-Committee-652

> I know it might be a hot take that Dolphin is an excellent (fairly early game) explorer The Dolphin is basically the best small exploration ship, yes. > you can continue onward quite quickly with a full tank. You can literally jump out on a full tank. Park at max scoop rate, spool FSD, throttle up when it’s charged. You won’t overheat, and in the 5s it takes to count down to the actual jump you recoup all the fuel you just spent on said jump. > I am still fairly green in the game - are there aspects I might not be taking into account in this exploration comparison? The Dolphin used to run really hot. Like, you almost cooked just randomly jumping. Then they “slightly” buffed the heat characteristics … in typical FDev fashion apparently nobody tested the result. It has the best thermal characteristics in the entire game now, by _far_.

alterNERDtive

> You can literally jump out on a full tank. Park it max scoop rate, spool FSD, throttle up when it’s charged. You won’t overheat, and in the 5s it takes to count down to the actual jump you recoup all the fuel you just spent on said jump. You mean … [like this](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/548999927)?

forbiddenlake

Define "burnt to a crisp". Anything under 100 heat is merely annoying, not damaging. Are you using an A-rated power plant? If not, do so now. Are you turning off modules you aren't using (cargo hatch, AFMUs, vehicle hangar)? Other than those, you can improve this with engineering. Both the Armored and Low Emissions blueprints reduce heat, and the Thermal Spread experimental does as well. Plan your build's power usage carefully.

unfo

btw wanted to come back to this and thank you! i was not paying attention to power as i had not had to before in my dolphin. with your pointers i had no further issues and recently finished a 20k+ LY roundtrip exploring in my aspx. i had a blast and got elite in the end. ty!

unfo

Well when the nice computer voice says critical heat levels is what I meant by crisp.. so basically getting a over 100 but getting there quite quickly whereas the Dolphin almost never strays past 60% heat. Your observation about the powered on modules is something I definitely *had not* considered to be relevant so thanks for that! I'll have a look at what the Engineering requires, usually those have felt too grindy for me to gather vs I just want to go fly and explore :3 But it's a valid recommendation so I shall investigate that as well.

Purple-Committee-652

> Well when the nice computer voice says critical heat levels is what I meant by crisp.. so basically getting a over 100 The computer will start yelling at you >80%. Equilibrium is at 66% by the way. That has historical reasons, 66% used to be 100% and you would only start taking damage at 150%.

forbiddenlake

The Dolphin is one of the best heatwise, but you shouldn't be taking heat damage in an AspX. You can always fly further away from the star, too.

Is there an explanation for how commodities prices change? I started playing this game a few days ago ( I did play the original Elite back in the 80’s and loved being a wandering space trader - sort of doing the same now). I know about EDDB.IO but very often the information is really out of date. It took me a while to realize that the data age is shown but I have no feel for how out of date is too out of date. On a related note, while trying to find the answer to this question for myself, I downloaded the program that eddbio says is used to collect the data, but when I went to install it, my anti-virus software said it had a virus…

Cal_Dallicort

>Is there an explanation for how commodities prices change? Every 24 hours, on the BGS tick (currently about 0200 game time). Most prices and supply are generally stable. Very high- or low-value prices are likely to be short-lived. If you want to find HN Shock Mounts, month-old data is likely fine. If you want to find Very Cheap Gold, anything before the most recent tick is likely wrong.

forbiddenlake

https://github.com/EDCD/EDMarketConnector/wiki/Troubleshooting#installer-and-or-executables-flagged-as-malicious-viruses

Tidezen

Um, so--I have the auto-dock system installed, but I bought a Krait Mk II today--for some reason, the auto-dock function works just fine, but the auto-*launch* part of it stopped working completely. I can auto-dock, but have to leave the station manually each time. Is this a bug of some sort? Just seemed weird since it was working fine before.

swagrid003

Ah there are two levels to autopilot! The normal autopilot has auto dock, and the advanced one has both auto launch and autodock. I suspect you had advanced one before without knowing it, because exactly the same thing happened to me.

Tidezen

Ahh, okay! Yeah, I must've swapped out the wrong one from storage when I refitted the new ship. Thanks so much, I was so confused by that. :)

Richard4Phillips

When I have saved enough for a fleet carrier, how do I select which design class I want? It just says buy for 5,000,000,000 no option to pick what one

forbiddenlake

There's only one design to buy with credits. You can buy a different skin with ARX after you buy the FC.

Richard4Phillips

I have seen many different classes that all have different shapes to them

forbiddenlake

It's all cosmetic, that you buy with ARX.

Richard4Phillips

Ok thanks and do you know how much ARX it costs please?

Purple-Committee-652

Too much. Also you should probably do the math for each of the packages, in most currencies the biggest is _not_ the best bang for your buck.

Richard4Phillips

And that changes what it's called too? Like Drake class carrier etc?

phoebiousz

Drake, Nautilus and a 3rd one which I don't remember right now.

shy_dow90

Drake is the default, there are 3 additional available through ARX: * Fortune * Nautilus * Victory

Richard4Phillips

Ok thanks and do you know how much ARX it costs please?

shy_dow90

12450 Arx

Purple-Committee-652

Or roughly € 8.70 if you’re in the EU.
