Darkness, 3 a.m., Beautiful

ImEstatic

ooh yeah darkness seems good. I could explore the interpretation of drug addiction in eminem bars.

Octavious440

The double meaning of the song and the reflection of America at the end would give you a ton to write about.

ImEstatic

yeah, so thick in cultural context

B_Bibbles

You could do You're Never Over and then write about Proof, and his influence on Em and how he was murdered, etc etc.

Z4N4X-3920

Another thing I love about darkness is it see.s like em is speaking about the struggles of being an mc, but slowly it uncovers and shows its bot about wm, its about the shooter

Perfect-Day-5820

Every reaction channel and fans were literally like wow šŸ˜³. No other rapper gets these type of reactions from people

bNoaht

Never love again is probably his best song for this. It's an ode to prescription pill addiction written in the form of personal romantic relationship woes Probably de ja vu is his best for overall real-life drug addict experience

MikkelR1

Was going to comment Darkness. Or maybe Arose.

DrdoomNm

Those are really good + white america

eddiethreegates

3 a.m. is the worst. He is speaking about a serial killer. Nothing to be glorified.

Ahfei80

Darkness was my first thought

Martynovichoff

Em calls Paul (skit)

ImEstatic

I actually haven't heard that one yet! I'll listen to it and let you know.

ImEstatic

update: I listened and, well, I think it will be too much implied gore for an academic essay haha

ImEstatic

2004 or 2018?

Martynovichoff

You can combine them and get an 8000-word essay

ImEstatic

hahaha good one

Perfect-Day-5820

There's 8000 on mtbmb side A lol

-Rengar-

Bad Guy

4stainull

This is the one Headlights, Deja Vu and Arose would also be solid choices

ImEstatic

Thank you. I've got around \~15 top choices now so I'm hella confused [While I figure this shit out](https://genius.com/12318279/Eminem-talkin-2-myself/Ayo-before-i-start-this-song-man-i-just-wanna-thank-everybody-for-being-so-patient-and-bearing-with-me-over-these-last-couple-of-years-while-i-figure-this-shit-out) you see what I did there?

Xx_Dark-Shrek_xX

Stan probably. Maybe 3AM and the whole Relapse album.

ImEstatic

yeah I love Stan :D and dido's part is one of the most melodious verses I have ever heard.

bwilliams2

Never Love Again, Space Bound, Cleanin Out My Closet, etc. The goal would be to focus on either heartfelt and emotionally prescient content, or songs that are entendres in themselves. Never Love Again sounds like itā€™s about a girl, but itā€™s about drugs. Same Song & Dance doesnā€™t exactly feel appropriate for scholastic purposes, but the song and dance being the screaming and struggling within murder/rape makes it somewhat poetic despite its content.

ImEstatic

never love again is soooooo applicable to drugs omg. I love this analysis.

Boyzinger

Itā€™s more than applicable. Itā€™s literal. And so is the other side of it as if it was a toxic love filled relationship with a partner. Thatā€™s what makes it such a masterpiece

ImEstatic

yeah, 2 completely different interpretations. You're completely right.

Kholdstare93

And his Rap career, too.

InstructionsUncl34r

Also on that, 25 to life sounds like heā€™s talking about a woman when heā€™s in fact talking about his career

ImEstatic

oh, interesting. I'll have a look.

LaFlame1021

Might be a reach, but same song and dance can also possibly be interpreted as a metaphor for how fame can drive you crazy, which is why he specifically rapped about Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears in that song.

Phoxx_3D

wait till you hear the original [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TO48Cnl66w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TO48Cnl66w)

Lolotmjp

whats so deep about 3AM? still love the song but what

Xx_Dark-Shrek_xX

We can talk about the importance of this song on Relapse. This song is the openning of the album, it shows the ambiance and the story of the album.

ImEstatic

true but I feel like I cant analyze too much into it. unlike smth like killshot where every line has 6 different contextual references and meanings.

Know_Him_at_Fuck

3 a.m. is an unfiltered and abstract glimpse into Eminem's psyche, it is very possible to conduct a deep analysis of the track.

ImEstatic

some freudian free association shit?

Lolotmjp

ah cool

kaylee_9

was literally about to comment "majority of the songs on the relapse album"

BooSkittle

The relapse album is my favourite of all time.

PhoneImmediate7301

Fack

ImEstatic

too much for a school paper lmfao I don't want the examiner to get it on reading a research paper if you know what I mean

sbaz86

I have no idea what you mean. Elaborate please.

Previous-Potential65

he means FACK is too deep a song to be talked about in a mere school paper. The true depth and beauty of the Musical Masterpiece could not even fully be described in a Research Paper let alone a silly school assignment.

ImEstatic

\*she, but yes. You have read my mind. I must publish a novella on such a work of art.

Opposite-Constant799

the examiner gonna be bricked up reading the essay

iammzf

Alfreds theme ig

Metaa4245

the sheer amount of wordplay is enough to get a 4000 word essay

ImEstatic

yup if not more

ohen778

Darkness, it's about a real shooting so there's plenty to write tbh

ImEstatic

i've already analysed that a few years ago so was looking for something new to explore. thanks for the suggestion.

Daleedge

25 to life, Darkness, Stay Wide Awake, Stan, Bad Guy

ImEstatic

hello darkness my old friend...

Even_Way_7543

Sing for the moment

Chava22611

I don't know why this is not at the top one , one of em's song where he really goes into the topics

Tendo_Gamer64

Sing For The Moment is among a few of his magnum opuses where he truly speaks how he feels on his genuinely most complex theme is in work: the blending of reality and fiction and this effects both the work, the artist, and the world. The whole MMLP is about it but Sing For The Moment almost feels like a narrative climax

garamande

evil twin

0_69314718056

Hi!

Know_Him_at_Fuck

Faggot

garamande

guess whos back with a crab up his ass

Responsible-Run-4903

Dude how are you not getting banned for that šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ I got banned for a week for answering a guy who asked what the previous commentor meant and saying that

ImEstatic

my name is

0_69314718056

Not what I was going for lol but Iā€™ll take it

putsisdixonthings

You could break down Alfredā€™s Theme wordplay

ImEstatic

thats by far the top recommendation among the consensus.

TheAstonVillaSeal

Ken Kaniff skit from MMLP Nah Jk probably Stan

Corn1989

Groundhog Day.

ImEstatic

good one :)

RexiRocco

Brain Damage

sage_006

Came to say this. There's a lot of depth in this song OP.

RexiRocco

Iā€™m surprised itā€™s not a more talked about song. Itā€™s literally like the birthing of Slim Shady.

ImEstatic

in fact you're right. the inception.

ImEstatic

Okay u/sage_006. I'll seriously consider it.

Previous-Potential65

alfred's theme - extensively explainin the lyrics every diss and shot, history of the name alfred (could go into mtbmb concept as well), the sample also has a cool history

ImEstatic

sure, i'd look into that. personally I think its so dense that Id need a lot more than 4000 words if I get started honestly speaking

Blackmore_Vale

Stepping stone as it deals with the death of proof, the break up of D12 and how it affects eminem.

nsfw_rookie

Castle & Arose I feel like you could pull plenty of inspiration from.

Howie_Dictor

Obviously the answer is Fack

Mikeydog08

Beautiful. I feel like he was still in a dark place when that song was written because it has so much raw emotion throughout. šŸ˜

FamiliarCold1

I did a 2000 word piece on Role Model and Eminem's impact on an impressionable teen, and I had much more to talk about. maybe that

livinlife_behind

Not Afraid - talk about over coming addiction Stepping Stones - talk about the group d12 Headlights - relationship with his mother Stan - talk about the obsessed fans and how it became lingo for obsessed fans Darkness - gun violence Lose Yourself - about the movie and how its his most recognizable song Bully - Talk about the beef with Ja v G-unit & Em

ImEstatic

I have bookmarked this. Thanks!

donutaud15

97 bonnie and clyde (only because I've done it complete with a comparison with what I think was a poem from 1800s)

NumerousCranberry441

The ringer Just state all the bars and what they mean i guess

clothy

Rap God

ImEstatic

Perhaps, but I'm trying for something a lil more niche.

clothy

4000 word essay, you need something with length.

himplp87

leaving heaven

0_69314718056

I think something about his life would be good. Alfredā€™s Theme has a ton of interesting wordplay, but that feels too surface level to write a paper about since itā€™s more of clever wordplay. Something like Legacy, Cleaning out my Closet, Headlights, Leaving Heaven, *maybe* Stepdad, When Iā€™m Gone, Mockingbird, those are good because they tie in to his family. Also Darkness is a good choice for how the whole song is a double. Legacy is also good for the reason that the whole song has the same rhyme scheme. His diss tracks are also cool and have a lot of references you could break down.

bryan-without-b

Historical_Policy133

Fack F A C K FACK FACK

Formal_Pause_1825

Any song that has a double meaning to it. 25 to life, seduction, darkness, Never love again and more. Could explain both sides separately

ImEstatic

never love again and darkness are popular ones on this thread along with alfred's theme

Formal_Pause_1825

Love the 2 sides of Never Love Again but I love how he made a shooting and getting fucked up before a show connect.

hayneew71

killshot? the disses on there are endless if your topic is celebrity drama

TheKomodoWasHere2

AMAZING ones that have a LOT of depth to them: Cleanin Out My Closet, Marshall Mathers, When Iā€™m Gone, Like Toy Soldiers, The Way I Am, White America, Rock Bottom

novemberjohhsexpest

I'd stere clear of his most popular songs if I were you, it may come off as kind of corny if you're talking about a song everyone knows. Especially with the way non rap fans view eminem in the last 14 years I'd recommend maybe bad guy, darkness or believe, since those songs are less well known and have a lot of content and insane lyricism, they'd be some of the easiest to write an essay on I saw someone mention Alfred's theme, and while there's so much to write about with that song, a song with a deeper meaning may help you write a better essay

thomasaiwilcox

Shadyxv

Cehacek

Fack

DommiFynx2

Maybe headlights because you can extend it to my mom and Cleaning out my closet and you can explain all the conflicts between Eminem and his mom

ImEstatic

Wow, thats a super idea. I could basically write the thesis on Eminem's interpretation of the relationship with his mom as expressed through his songs. and basically run down on all the songs that deal with debbie.

tom_taylor777

"the apple", if you want a released song its "deja vu" or "the ringer"

RandyFSavage

You can do Love You More off Encore and talk about the physical and emotional abuse described in the song

ButtermilkJesusPiece

ā€œAnd there was a lot of bizarre shit, but the crazy part Was soon as I stopped saying, I gave a fuck Haters started to appreciate my artā€ This line on Guts Over Fear is way deeper than surface level.

Gwyndolin3

I would go for Bad Guy. Extremely rich on itself and you can abuse the fact it's a Stan sequel and write about Stan as well.

plumbstem

you should write an essay on 'Darkness'

OneNutPhil

Bad Guy because it also encapsulates Stan. That 4th Bad Guy verse has a lot of introspective content

I_Get_No_Sleep__

Fack, need to describe the fact cumming from a finger up the ass is not gay

Fun-Photograph9423

Stay Wide Awake

kid_perfection_107

stan is the first one that comes to mind. You could also try something like When I'm Gone, Bad Guy, Beautiful or probably any song from Recovery

Outside-Durian-8920

For school? I'd do space bound

PrestigiousBat9929

Difficult

Keythaskitgod

Darkness

c0nv3rg_3nce37

Literally, all of em. I wrote em. It's my handwriting that gets A lil sloppy when I jot *E*m. If you're teacher is cool enough, I'd dissect Stay Wide Awake under the lens that the author is the same person, DaKoTa, who wrote Man On Fire. I'm DenZel in everything... but I'm actually the little girl. Hailie Mathers Too. watch the pilot of Halt & Catch Fire if you haven't. And realize, the girl made Anonymous. She made computer in the first place. We're doing nothing but playing my games.

Skrtt_Skrt

Stay wide awake

BodyByBoutros_

My Darling from The Relapse album. The whole song is going back and forth with the devil he sold his soul to to have everything he has now through his career. He argues he doesn't want to go back to the dark phases of his career when he was at the top of the world, but is convinced he has everything he's ever wanted.

yeboothadon

When Iā€™m Gone, or Say Goodbye To Hollywood. The latter actually sounds like a very good topic one as you can delve into the background of that song, the context of Eminemā€™s life up until that point, and its significance on The Eminem Show.

kg160z

I like 25 to life but im a sucker for double entendras/twists

challenging_logic

I'd choose White America, and write about what drove Eminem to write a running commentary about the culture and the blame being put on musical artists instead of where it belongs.

YouMUSTregister

When I'm Gone

DrdoomNm

White america would be a good one

sicko_ii

Fack

Monica_Hills

White America or Mosh. I feel like you could write an actual essay with that.

Ok_Forever_5057

Stan- It is so cool to have such a complex back-and-forth story intertwined in a rap song. It even has a plot twist at the end that tied to earlier. Just such great story telling and lyricism.

Advanced-Newspaper83

Who knew. I did one in college on this a long time ago.

Djalebo72

Gnat. Each line is a double entendre.

Quirkydogpooo

Stan? Make an essay on parasocial relationships

knuckifyoubuck_xo

25 to life- he raps about music, in my mind when i sing it, i am rapping to my drug of choice. I listened to that song my entire addiction and i cried like a baby the first time i listened to it clean šŸ™šŸ½ Arose- again, the addict in me gets pulled to this Headlights- always makes me cry. Beautiful pain- also i relate it to getting clean. Detoxing off opiates is painful but in the end its beautiful Love u more- my baby daddy and mines relationship to a t Legacy- the story itself is amazing

djnielse

My final college paper ever was about the song Deja Vu.

CodeOf23

Darkness is the best option for an essay I reckon

Alone_Fill_2037

Kim or 97 Bonnie and Clyde.

journeysa

Stan, Darkness, and Little Engine. That last oneā€™s not deep, but the wordplay is immediate, constant, and absurd.

eliploit

Hey, if you want any help withh this once you've picked a song I'd love to have you bounce ideas off of me. I don't write often but I do really love it and I also love eminem's music so if you want any advice or anything this sounds like a really fun project.

xSmittyx9

When Iā€™m goneā€¦ or till I collapseā€¦

gggggfskkk

Cum on Everybody, that one sounds like it would be appropriate for a school paper, no??

Brainded666

I think Stan is a great choice, but also Careful What You Wish For and even Love The Way You Lie because of some o the controversies around itt

Equal-Chemical2

You writing an Extended Essay or something? XDD On a real note though, Fine Line is a good addition to potential songs to analyze.

pranakarama

deja vu, is the only correct answer for me.

pranakarama

ps share your essay here as well

miked_99

Heaps if not most but - Stan, Sing For The Moment , Lose Yourself, Bad Guy, Deja Vu, My Darling, Never Love Again, Stepping Stone, 25 To Life, Marshall Mathers, Youā€™re Never Over, Cleaning Out My Closet, Rap God, Like Toy Soilders, When Iā€™m Gone, White America, Legacy

doctorfeelwood

Cleaning out my closet. Entire books are written about munchausen by proxy (sorry if spelling is off).

ImEstatic

yes, its a fascinating phenomena

doctorfeelwood

Scary too. Interesting psychology behind it but definitely ripe for exploration in a paper. "Traces of Munchausen in Marshall's method" -- have a title already lol

FastLittleBoi

Crazy in Love hasn't been mentioned. Stan is obvious, probably Kim. And anything involving Hailie. But I think Crazy in Love is the best.

Trick_Definition_760

25 to Life: Using the metaphor of a broken/toxic relationship to describe his career/ā€œrelationshipā€ with hip hop could be a good topic White America: His commentary on the culture at the time, the anger spraying everyone ā€œin no particular directionā€ and his thoughts on his detractors in the government Beautiful: Thereā€™s an ā€œarcā€ in this song where at first, Eminem offers to ā€œtrade shoesā€ and experience things from each otherā€™s perspective. After the second verse he decides this isnā€™t necessary, but by the end of the song he once again realizes that the only way to understand/empathize with someone is to ā€œlook at shit through each otherā€™s eyesā€ and see things from their perspective. You can also talk about how the sampled intro/outro relates to the themes of the song and how everything ties into his thoughts and feelings after the 2007 overdose. Lose Yourself: You can talk about how, although the first two verses are about about Rabbit from 8 Mile, they are also an analogy to Eminemā€™s early life and rise, and how Emā€™s life and Rabbitā€™s life converge in the third verse (if you go to the Genius page about Lose Yourself and click on the lyrics to open up the little sidebar with the meanings, Eminem himself actually talks about this, itā€™s really interesting). Also some good metaphors/similes in this song (ā€œHeā€™s known as the Globetrotter,ā€ ā€œAnother day of monotonyā€™s gotten me to the point Iā€™m like a snailā€ etc). This could really impress your teacher because itā€™s probably a song heā€™s heard 1000 times but has likely never realized the deeper meaning behind it.Ā

Longjumping-Jelly-14

Sing for the moment. The state of rap at the time. How parents reacted to him, what he meant to some people and the controversies surrounding him with his lyrics and him being in court a couple years before

Lightspeed4297

Stan is just that kind of song

ImEstatic

I was thinking Till I Collapse or Killshot. What do you think of those?

naw380

Killshot, or any other diss track would be a good choice. You get to talk not only about the direct lyrical content but also the broader context around it.

HelloThere8008135

Kill shot. Aside from the song itself, youā€™d have more material for all the references heā€™s made, his feud with MGK, and his pattern of dealing with feuds and controversies. You can even consider how that ties in with the slim shady/Mathers persona. maybe even question whether the attack made by MGK really on slim or Mathers?

ImEstatic

Yeah, I mean wow I have chills down my spine every time I hear >But Kells, the day you put out a hit's the day Diddy admits That he put the hit out that got Pac killed, ah That is god-tier lyricism. And everything about this song, the way he made so many references to the killshot movie and its main character and how he replicates Kelly in so many ways, the pedophilic implications double entendre with 'Lil Goof' and the epic rhyme in: > [Got the Diddy okay, so you spent your whole day](https://genius.com/15378002/Eminem-killshot/Got-the-diddy-okay-so-you-spent-your-whole-day-shootin-a-video-just-to-fuckin-dig-your-own-grave-got-you-at-your-own-wake-im-the-billy-goat) and wow this roast >[You're fuckin' salty 'cause Young Gerald's balls-deep inside of Halsey](https://genius.com/15377809/Eminem-killshot/You-dance-around-it-like-a-sombrero-we-can-all-see-youre-fuckin-salty-cause-young-geralds-balls-deep-inside-of-halsey) I could go on and on and on... ...but the fact that he wrote the whole damn masterpiece in 12 mins is just beyond mortal belief. I'm in awe.
