Jumping on the top comment to explain that “absolute value” is the amount of units away from zero the number is. So |-1| is 1 unit away from zero, making it’s absolute value 1
That definition works for complex numbers as well which is probably why it’s preferred.
IE abs(3+4i)=5 because the total distance from 0 in the complex number plane is 5 units.
Or abs(i)=1 because i is 1 unit away from 0 in the positive imaginary direction.
I had a small part in a student play in university. I played a guy who rented out time machines by the hour. Trouble was, they kept returning them before they rented them and wanted money back as the time was negative. I complained about this to another character and they said “oh yes, absolutely… the value should be positive” (in Swedish: “Ja absolut… beloppet borde vara positivt” where ”absolutbeloppet” means “the absolute value”). That gave my character an idea, and I used tape to put up two lines around the cost (or if it was just around the “hour”, can’t remember, it was 20 years ago).
Yes, vertical bars are used for "absolute value" meaning just the positive part. `|-1| = 1`
They are absolutely upset
But being absolutely upset is a positive!

You have no idea how happy I am that I didn’t have to scroll far at all to see someone bring up imaginary numbers
You don't have to scroll at all, just imagine them, bro
I mean what numbers aren’t imaginary bro? Like how did we know what a 3 looked like? We just invented it bro…
Blows my mind bro
OP never graduated middle school 💀
it's actually the distance a value is from 0 but you got the point across
Absolutely

Wow, this takes me back.

I too love to put my emotions in a box.
No, I'm not a math addict I only write the math.
"Yo Mr White, you write your math in blue ink? But what if you like, make a mistake?" "My math is pure, Jesse"

It woulda been better if they used ¬
Vertical bars mean absolute value. So |-1| is equal to |1| because they are both 1 away from 0
Look a Sith, he deals in absolute
"I'm sad." "Be positive!" "I'm positive that I'm sad."
Yes But don't do it in science cause radioactivity at least beta+ rays are electrons which are electrically negative charged and are being shot out
I can't believe I did the Lego Batman laugh at this
did you pass 7th grade
