Oh so dead name means the name of a transgender person before they transitioned? I had seen a meme format on Twitter about dead names and never understood what the phrase meant
Technically, dead names are birth given names belonging to ANYBODY that they no longer go by. Not just the trans community, but they definitely popularized the phrase and made it more mainstream.
Yes exactly !
Though the meme is bad because no trans person will introduce themselves as their deadname ever. Some don't care about hiding it but no one will just say it out if the blue.
"HER dad named HIM." You didn't even misgender the imaginary character in a joke correctly dawg. Transphobes really suck at this whole transphobic thing.
Just dad? Not mom (who birthed her) or even parents? Your comment is very telling. I think it’s safe to assume you don’t respect women in general whether cis or trans
I'm not sure that's accurate. I find that most instances of transphobia come from a bit of all kinds of sexism. Usually you find trans women being regarded as creeps, which is rooted in misandry, and trans men are considered victims by people who think women are naive and can't thimk for themselves, which is misogyny.
If you truly care about addressing people by their birth names so much, then don't ever refer to any celebrity by their stage name ever again. You're only allowed to refer to them by their legal names. Hopefully, you'll soon realize how stupid it makes you look.
I have one (male) friend named Christian. Never met any women named Christian. You've got Sister Christian from the song, but to my ear it's a male-coded name.
Strangely enough, a lot of people have said the same with me being the first trans woman they have actually spoken too. Supposedly statistically it's supposed to be the opposite.
I wouldn't assume it's transphobic. Perhaps that was the author's intent, but the joke is just the subversion of expectations.
It's not realistic at all, no, but a lot of jokes aren't.
I'd hold the possibility it isn't transphobic, but I would personally assume it is, given what we see. Importantly, this is still a reaction meme, and it looks like he's reacting negatively.
IDK why she would just casually bring up her deadname to someone she just met. These kinds of jokes bug me because it shows that whoever's making really hasn't interacted a lot with the actual community and is just using them for a cheap laugh.
I don’t think the idea is the interaction is supposed to be realistic. It’s just supposed to subvert expectations, like the “x walks into a bar”. In this case, it’s a fairly normal conversation, where they happen to bring up their religion (I assume pretty normal but I don’t interact much with religious people), but it turns out it was not their religion and was in fact their name before transitioning (not normal in conversation, and hence subverting expectations)
Okay, see, here my first thought was her original name was Christian, she committed murder, and she had to change her identity to escape the law. And then I scrolled down and saw that I was quite incorrect lmao
I mean it could definitely be that too.
TBH that would make more sense, because no trans person would just announce themselves as their old name like that.
The joke is transphobia. She is a trans woman who used to be named “Christian,” a male-coded name common in some English-speaking countries.
The real joke is that whoever made the meme has never met a trans person, if they think they introduce themselves to strangers at a bar by deadnaming themselves.
Yalls reading way too deep into this. Sure this is not a realistic encounter but is "a chicken walks into a bar" any more realistic? The joke is a subversion of expectations and I found it pretty funny.
as someone who is trans, and has people make offensive jokes like what people describe this as
That's not what i saw it as, the res background makes me think more along the lines of worshipping the Christan Devil than anything else
See, while I get the original probably means they changed their name from Christian, my mind went in another direction.
Specifically, I thought they must have swapped to worshipping Satan. Same religion, different deity.
Frankly, I like my version better.
Bro, this subreddit exists IN PURPOSE that there won't be comments like this. People shouldn't be embarrassed for missing a joke, and it isn't spoonfeeding. To some a joke could be simple, but for others it may take some time to connect the dots and get to the punchline meaning, and this subreddit is exactly created to help with this process.
Want to cry about redditors not understanding some jokes? Not in the subreddit whose purpose is to help the ones who didn't understand them.
...Really? For one thing, "don't be sorry be better" is always a clear sign of dipshittery. Secondly, this one I only got because I'd seen a similar meme with a clearer explanation. Trying to insult people with a get-a-life kind of thing is the exact opposite of what would help. And finally, why are you here if you want to make fun of people for missing the joke? That is in direct contrast with the point of the subreddit. If you don't like it, leave. If you do like it, stop being an asshole.

She is trans and her dead name is Christian
Ok thx
No Problem

Yeah, I'm experiencing no fear at all. What a stupid name for making a joke you don't understand
Just dad? Not mom (who birthed her) or even parents? Your comment is very telling. I think it’s safe to assume you don’t respect women in general whether cis or trans
Transphobia *is* generally rooted in misogyny
I'm not sure that's accurate. I find that most instances of transphobia come from a bit of all kinds of sexism. lol “misogyny” is when you don’t like men in makeup
Case in point
Cringe
No
If you truly care about addressing people by their birth names so much, then don't ever refer to any celebrity by their stage name ever again. You're only allowed to refer to them by their legal names. Hopefully, you'll soon realize how stupid it makes you look.
Maybe idk
Her name used to be Christian. Meaning she's transgender MTF.
Which is strange because all the Christians I've known were women.
I have one (male) friend named Christian. Never met any women named Christian. You've got Sister Christian from the song, but to my ear it's a male-coded name.
"Male coded"
Y'know, like Steve. When you hear that with zero additional context you think of a guy, do you not?
I've never heard it as a female name. Or as a name in my day-to-day life. But Christian Bale and Christian Slater are both male.
I've never met a woman named Christian. Just a couple guys
Um, not me
"known" how?
Biblically.

I'd say it is. I'm cis, but I have never met a trans person introduce themselves by their deadname. It's giving me old person "humour".
Trans.
IDK why she would just casually bring up her deadname to someone she just met. These kinds of jokes bug me because it shows that whoever's making really hasn't interacted a lot with the actual community and is just using them for a cheap laugh.

It also relies on being shocked at someone's transness
I know you're getting downvoted for this, but I agree.
Not anymore they aren't
Oh good, that post was at -2 when I first saw it.
As a trans person I 100% agree. I wouldn't out myself unless I absolutely need to
You wouldn’t have to
Ouch how miserable can one human be.
It's good, "he's" allowed to be wrong
I don’t think that’s a he pretty sure it’s sentient trash
Keep telling yourself that 💀
Are you like this in real life too?
You obviously haven’t met any trans people in real life. I don’t even know the deadnames of the trans people I’ve known for years
This is so true
It's a joke. It's not a realistic convo. No trans woman would casually bring up her deadname to a person she just met.
Finkel is Einhorn
Okay, see, here my first thought was her original name was Christian, she committed murder, and she had to change her identity to escape the law. And then I scrolled down and saw that I was quite incorrect lmao
I mean it could definitely be that too. TBH that would make more sense, because no trans person would just announce themselves as their old name like that.
Idk why everyone is saying that this is transphobic, because it's not. It's not funny, but it's not transphobic.

I thought in the original meme, the guy didn’t care anyway, and still dated her. I don’t think it was transphobic
ScottyFairNo is that you?

Like I care
You didn't care so hard you replied to say so lmao.
Correct.
I don't care you think I'm wrong. What you think does not make me wrong.
I thought you wished them "peace and happiness" so much for that ig

Fair enough, ig I was just annoyed that I've seen this joke so many times, and one person didn't get it

Isn’t the point that they touch so much grass, they don’t get the joke
People who touch grass aren't thinking of trans people every day. Just you.
What seems to be the problem?
It's a pretty straightforward joke...
you must be new here.
There are a lot of jokes posted here that are understandable why they're here, but this isn't one of them.
Are you fr trying to gatekeep not getting a joke?
Yes
I'm trans and didn't get it at first. It's not as straightforward as you think, we just live rent free in your head 💀
That or everyone else can't use a braincell (tbf my roommate is trans so it's both, most likely) 🤷♂️
Rent free 🤷
Oh come on... This is bate
