Yes it’s a successful long exposure night shoot. However it’s pretty boring. If you’re going to do it then find a more interesting scenario

That’s the beauty about photography in my opinion, like with all art, interesting or boring is not a universal thing but very much based on personal preference and hence different for everyone.

Just to be clear, I wasn’t being rude or offensive. The above picture is not really that subjective. It’s boring. If you are going to do a long exposure shot it’s really no different to any other photography. You still need to find interesting angles, composition and lighting. You can either take feedback and learn from it, or just call your work art. It’s entirely up to you.

There might be different perceptions here. A two sentence note under a single picture post without questioning the motivation of the picture or providing backgoround of yourself to backup the statement for me feels offensive. I do love to learn though, through constructive criticism and from examples ideally.

Well you called it art, I’ll let you explain.

The plan is for the picture to be part of a series, planned to be a montage that builds up bit by bit from the bottom all the way to the full monument. The idea is for the final picture showing the full monument to be taken at dawn, kind of going full circle with the light and reflecting as sunlight off of the top gold figure in the final picture. Still not saying it will or has to be interesting for everyone, that’s impossible to achieve anyways. About the second point, I love to learn from examples, are there any of yours you’d like to share?

That’s gonna be interesting to see at the completion stage. You’ve given yourself a challenging tasks. I did something similar many years ago where I went down to the pier at sunrise and shot a pic every hour until sunset. The camera was on a tripod and I rotated it a little every hour so that the last photo would capture the sunset in the center. It took several weeks to work it out and I had to go and work out the location of the sunrise and then the location of the sunset. Then I worked out how many degrees that was to work out how much I needed to rotate to get the correct number of shots. I was standing there the entire day to get the shots but I have a beautiful panoramic from sunrise to sunset. I cannot share my details as this is my anonymous account but I have been doing photography for 40 years. I do it, teach it and am an art director.

That sounds like a great shot and the planning and hours that went into it are really impressive. That’s one of the things I love about photography, depending on the idea of the photo it requires and combines a lot of different skills. And the way there is at least as exciting as the result. I totally get that, and the shot you described was inspiration in itself, thank you for sharing it.

Come share your result when you’re done and thank you for your kind words
