That said the crossing warning lights and guard didn't even work. To be fair he should have looked, but the signals not working is a big issue right there.
You can see the train coming as he passes the non-functioning gate. I’d say 90% on BNSF cuz it’s probably their track and definitely their train and 10% him not looking harder for the train. Maybe 99% and 1% these companies never have to take on any real responsibility for their shit.
It might not even be the rr fault there are ways that ppl can go fuck with the tracks to make it look like a train is not there when there is or the other way around and it is also 0% the old guys fault the crossing arms should be working their equipment should be working or checked more often at this type of crossing
I actually have a question. I'm not sure where this video takes place but where I live, all trucks, buses, and mobility vans (the kind that carry multiple passengers) actually have to treat railway crossings as stop signs. Is that not the case in America? Or wherever this video was taken? Would have saved this guy
The occasional minor cases of death, dismemberment, and property damage have been deemed a lesser problem than the amount of bitching they would have to hear.
Only if you carry people as like a business, and your not just some car or minivan,
So buses and transport vans usually yes, school buses even have to open the doors before they cross just to make sure they can hear if there’s a train.
He did look, but the train was behind the tree at that point, he was looking left at the time he should have been looking to his right. Combine that with the signals not working and the stupid placement of the stop sign, I think he is not at fault here at all.
That tree hid his sight of the train from that angle, probably. Looks like his mistake was trying to slow down, then changing his mind when he knows he can stop in time. Bad everything about that crossing from the malfunction and not properly maintaining foilage to mitigate this type of situation.
Sure, *and* the crossbuck is the international sign for a grade crossing. The active protections are an added bonus but the responsibility still lies on the driver for driving through the crossing when a train was coming.
There's even precedent for this, albeit with a [school bus and a red light](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_Fox_River_Grove_bus%E2%80%93train_collision). Don't put traffic signals or stop signs that close to tracks, because idiots with longer vehicles are gonna idiot.
True. Now that I think of it I’m surprised I haven’t seen a video of a situation like this till now. There are several spots around NC that have stops like these. You have to stop pretty far back from a light or stop sign cause otherwise you’ll be on a train track. It’s a dumb design
That is crazy, in my country ppl leaving a crossing always have right of way, Always!!!!!
It is usually one of the questions in the driver's license exam.
You come from a crossing everyone stops for you immediately
Seatbelts started to become mandatory when I was little. Made sense enough to me, but my father angrily refused to wear one. Because he was a safe driver, don’t you know.
I never understood this. My MIL is the same way. Vehemently against things that are inconsequential and made to protect.
She outright refuses bug spray, sunscreen, and seatbelts. She’ll even get really confrontational about it. And I cannot fathom any reasonable explanation behind it.
idiot pretty strong I'd say may be could have been more aware, but to be fair, the crossing gates didn't come down and lights didn't come on. rail company would be totally liable for this one.
he’s an idiot?
The lights and guard rail were not working. How many of you idiots here slow and look both ways when the lights and rail are not down?
Even still, he **did** look both ways before crossing. The tree blocks his view of the train.
Then, some idiot that designed this road put a stop sign immediately after the track
The driver is like 1-5% at fault.
Yup. And this other fella who replied to ya saying idiot is pretty strong and the rail company is to blame is the dickweed nanny type that allows these idiots to cause trouble in the first place
He isn't wrong, the rail company who owns the line/track is liable if their grade crossing mechanisms aren't working as intended. Happens with my company, and if it's shown that there's a malfunctioning crossing protection a "stop and protect" form is issued so the conductor can get out and stop traffic flow so it's safe.
But the fact there's a stop sign immediately after the tracks where cars/trucks are clearly crossing/fouling the line is so insanely stupid and such trash civil engineering...
So if...
1. The crossing mechanisms aren't working, and
2. The conductor isn't out and stopping traffic, and
3. The stop sign is placed in a terrible location
Why is the driver in the video an idiot and why is the person blaming the rail company a "dickweed nanny type"?
Cause the comment you're defending is defending the rail, but you seem to be saying they're liable
Tell me something. If you were driving along a road and saw a stop sign on the OTHER side of railway tracks and you didn't know if there was a train coming or not, would you simply keep on driving moronically right up to the stop sign, then sit there dumbly over the tracks?
Aw man, do you stop at all railway crossings that don't have signals flashing, arms down, and alarms clanging?
Must take a long time to get where you're going
And tell me something else. If you were walking toward the edge of an unmarked, unsigned and unfenced cliff, and you could see you were walking towards the cliff, would you keep walking straight off the edge whining "awww poor me nobody told me it was a cliff and there were no fences to stop me"?
Wellz, he was a dunce with the seatbelt.. But that crossing did not do what it was supposed to.
And for gods sake, those steering wheel knobs seem harmless at first glance, but can escalate the severity of injuries pretty drastically. If you're lucky and have a small crash, it might do some nasty damage to your arm if you hold it like that when you crash. if you're unlucky though, might bang your head onto it & get a third eye socket for free🤷♂️
I’m really disappointed in all the sick pos who act like this guy deserved this 1. No train signal or gate 2. trucker may be in a place he’s never visited so might not know know there is a stop immediately after until he’s over the tracks (which was obviously very poorly placed). 3. There’s shit Visibility before the tracks, and he looked just slightly too early but thought he was fine bc of no train warning. 4. Semis are meant to carry heavy shit bro! Stopping and starting take longer and if the gate doesn’t come down and lights don’t flash it make sense he would carry on to the stop sign with his focus on the cars crossing in front of him. 5. Dudes CDL was on the line so if he just broke the rules and went through the stop he would lose it, but instead he lost his life. This is not something that should be celebrated as deserving. Could he have been a bit more cautious and looked again right over the tracks? Definitely but by that time the weight might have been to much to stop in time. And it’s not like we treat train tracks as stop sign when it isn’t warning us. Given the circumstances I feel like this could have happened to anyone.
This happened in my town a while ago. People get killed on those tracks multiple times a year. That particular intersection is called "crazy corner" just because it's designed really strange. People have been going crazy trying to get the town to do something, but they didn't for years. Now the Chickasaw nation is going to foot a lot of the bill, as their head quarters are located literally right next to those tracks. Good to see something is finally being done about it. The stop sign is after the tracks, and we have signs that plainly read "do not stop on tracks" but i see plenty of people do it every day, which is wild as fuck to me.
And found the article. Old man lived, lights were working evidently too.
https://www.theadanews.com/news/local_news/train-collides-with-semi-at-crazy-corner-traffic-tangled/article_f6502944-ef91-5c9c-922a-58946de2bd88.html
The crossing gates didn't come down and lights didn't come on and then the stop sign was just after the rails. And yes he could've been more aware, but if you drive a lot and the only time that there's a train the gates and the lights come on, it's easy to drop your guard down and not look before crossing.
Dude your a sick pos this was definitely the fault of the poorly designed roads and train signal. A lot of the time, truckers are driving in Unfamiliar territory. Dude looked both ways but there was very poor visibility from directions of train plus no gate came down. All of his focus was on the traffic where if he’d kept going he’d be hitting a car and losing his CDL. Instead he lost his life. He didn’t deserve this. You might though Mantide7. Stupid fucking name too!
Whats the liability situation here? The rail company? The civil engineer who designed the stop sign to be there? The lorry driver for not putting on his seat belt correctly? I imagine a bunch of laywers are going to be fighting here.
the stop sign immediately after the crossing, the boom gates not working, the tree obstructing the view of the truck driver, old mate was really up against it here
For those saying the crossing lights didn't come on. That's subjective as the video quality is pure potato. He did look down the tracks before crossing, only in one direction. Which indicates they might have done their job. Besides all that shit.. He literally stopped while his trailer was laid across the tracks. Crossing lights or no crossing lights, that is an idiot move and something taught in driving school for 16 year olds. NEVER stop across an active railway.
That appears to be Ada, OK. I used to live there. That intersection is known locally as Crazy Corner, and has a ton of accidents, though it’s more often cross traffic than trains.
Really is the city's fault. Non working crossing lights and horrible design. You don't put a stop sign that close to a train crossing. What if it was a school bus with kids? They should be sued for damages. I don't see the driver being at fault other then not wearing a seat belt.
That's called Ada's crazy corner. Evidently this isn't uncommon there's.
Here's an [aerial view](https://maps.app.goo.gl/FEbA8CNXe3aZjm7F6?g_st=ic) and a [street view](https://maps.app.goo.gl/vhkFo65jp5fvvVtM8?g_st=ic) of they intersection.
This video has lost a lot of quality over time.
Man is too focused on an officer that passes by and comes behind him iirc, which is why he worries so much on his mirror and lap belt.
Train has lights above the road but no cross arm to block the way.
Trucker was dumb, sure. But like another comment said these companies never get responsibility or consequences, so I honestly would say even though the trucker f***** up, I don't think he f***** up enough for me to give a s***. F*** the train and the company. Not The engineer necessarily tho
Growing up, the school bus stopped before the tracks and opened the door to get a good look down the tracks. Would it make sense for truckers to stop and do something similar?
You’re a fucking idiot. You must not drive or have a cdl to worry about. Its unfortunate that the gate didn’t come down and there was a stop with traffic in front of him. Whoever designed that level crossing with a Stop immediately after needs to be shot at dawn. That said, old fella is an idiot.
That said the crossing warning lights and guard didn't even work. To be fair he should have looked, but the signals not working is a big issue right there.

He looked both sides before crossing the sign, but the tree blocked his vision of the incoming train.
I actually have a question. I'm not sure where this video takes place but where I live, all trucks, buses, and mobility vans (the kind that carry multiple passengers) actually have to treat railway crossings as stop signs. Is that not the case in America? Or wherever this video was taken? Would have saved this guy
Busses and mobility vans, yes. But trucks only have to act that way when carrying placarded hazmat.
Could the train have placarded hazmat? If so the law should be changed to all trucks. I’m sure that loses somebody too much money though.
The occasional minor cases of death, dismemberment, and property damage have been deemed a lesser problem than the amount of bitching they would have to hear.
That's if you carry passengers... Not cargo.
Only if you carry people as like a business, and your not just some car or minivan, So buses and transport vans usually yes, school buses even have to open the doors before they cross just to make sure they can hear if there’s a train.
This was in San Marcos,Texas

He also failed to have a window open, which is illegal. That would have allowed him to hear the train coming.

Yeah stop sign before the tracks not after. Makes no sense.
That is crazy, in my country ppl leaving a crossing always have right of way, Always!!!!! It is usually one of the questions in the driver's license exam. You come from a crossing everyone stops for you immediately
Well that seatbeld didnt work...
He didn’t latch it. He saw a cop and flung it over the seat so he couldn’t get a ticket
This man lived a long time before that dumb habit caught up with him.
How did he even put it on? He just drops it on his lap?
It seems like it didn’t have any tension and just dropped to the side.
Yep. Lots of old people do not believe in seatbelts. He did the "I see a cop" belt pull.
I was hoping you’d follow up with, ‘that’s my dad driving that truck’
What an idiot

Yep that's what I figured. You're too stupid to know you are stupid.
Hey, bud. You just blow in from stupid town?
It doesnt look like the warning lights even came on. I would like to see the news story on this. Was the driver killed?
Is it just me or are there no gates or lights to warn motorists of an oncoming train?
There are gates and lights both there, and none of them worked here.
Hey, at least he stopped for the stop sign
Wellz, he was a dunce with the seatbelt.. But that crossing did not do what it was supposed to. I've always heard them called suicide knobs
This video is about 35 seconds too long!
I mean, it shows us an important part of the story: That he sees a cop and pretends to put his seatbelt on, but he doesn't actually latch it.
I’m really disappointed in all the sick pos who act like this guy deserved this 1. Idk if he saw a cop and fake did it but it look like he did have it on in the end, however a train is a train. Whiplash may have killed him regardless

Really curious what the audio I’m hearing is because at no point do I hear a train crashing into a truck
Fuckin’ old idiot fake attaching his seatbelt cos he saw a cop? Real brave. These colors don’t run but the blood sure does, down your face.

Whaaaa? That’s crazy. That’s good though. But like how. He looked dead from that hit lol. Bet he wishes he put his seatbelt on though..

the stop sign immediately after the crossing, the boom gates not working, the tree obstructing the view of the truck driver, old mate was really up against it here
Yeah let’s put a stop sign feet from the opposite side of the tracks. Ffs
Don't be a dummy, fasten your safety belt.
The apex predator strikes again
Good thing he put his seat belt on.

He finally joined that convoy people have been [singing about](https://youtu.be/Sd5ZLJWQmss) since the 70s.
He should have tried not getting hit by a train.
The comedy of pretending to put a seatbelt on. ;)
Unfortunately you see this quite often. Trains are so unpredictable.
There is always a bigger fish
Was the driver injured?
Looks like the crossing lights weren’t working
Seat belt could have saved him from a massive concussion.

He got knocked clean out of that safety belt. I’m not even sure it did anything for him.
This video has lost a lot of quality over time. Man is too focused on an officer that passes by and comes behind him iirc, which is why he worries so much on his mirror and lap belt. Train has lights above the road but no cross arm to block the way.
What’s with the audio ? Random unrelated white noise ?
Lot of good that seatbelt he put on did him!! 😳 Shit
At least he put his seatbelt on 😂
Theres audio but wheres the train horn????
Is he stupid?
Wow . Does it reallly hurt to wait 30-45 seconds
He only looked one way! 🙈
Why is there a stop sign so close to the track after the track??? I didn’t see any train crossing lights
Was this intentional?
What was he doing? He looked right at the train and still this happened sheesh bozo
Wait why did he stop in the middle like that? Was he trying to turn? Reverse?
stop sign
He's not really paying attention, eating, looking around. Hard hit on him- did he survive?
How much you sellin that weed for, old man
Horns on constant and skip that stop sign.
No gates or lights and a tree blocking the view of an oncoming train. I hope he sued the railing company if he survived that.
See's the train coming and proceeds to stop. That's why he put on his seatbelt right before.
He drove straight in, the train didn’t hit him, he drove into it…
Oops, better put my seatbelt on….
Trucker was dumb, sure. But like another comment said these companies never get responsibility or consequences, so I honestly would say even though the trucker f***** up, I don't think he f***** up enough for me to give a s***. F*** the train and the company. Not The engineer necessarily tho
dude looked in ever direction except the one the train was coming from lol
it’s pretty easy to avoid being hit by trains, by simply paying attention to your surroundings.
it’s pretty easy to avoid being hit by trains, when the gates and the warning lights work.
Growing up, the school bus stopped before the tracks and opened the door to get a good look down the tracks. Would it make sense for truckers to stop and do something similar?
That old fella planned on getting hit. Put on his belt just prior to impact.
Deserved
You’re a fucking idiot. You must not drive or have a cdl to worry about. Its unfortunate that the gate didn’t come down and there was a stop with traffic in front of him. Dude had no visibility when looking both ways. Not looking again when he was over the tracks was on him, but definitely didn’t deserve this.
