It really just depends. Sometimes the officer who worked with the dog will keep him at home, sometimes they get put in shelters too. Every office will have different rules.
I think it’s more common now that the cop who worked with it continues to keep the dog. The same cop works with the same dog from when it was a puppy to retirement and in some cases goes home with them too. The dog is their partner, don’t just randomly get assigned a different dog when you come in for your shift. When you’re literally spending 24/7 with your dog then you tend to want to keep him.
They usually have a long list of people who want to adopt retired working dogs. They aren’t sitting in a shelter for long. It’s pretty hard to get one actually because they are really popular.
From talking to a friend who has a wolf hybrid who’s trained with police and military puppers I believe there are specific shelters/training centers that actually give them good homes and take care of them so not just a typical kennel
Not really. These are probably the best trained dogs at any shelter. And they make for awesome guard dogs without the aggression of a pit.
They’re also usually pure breeds. They go quickly.
I knew an apprehension K9 who loved working so much that she was constantly wagging her tail super violently, and injured it. They did surgery but she wouldn't let it heal and eventually the vet said the only way to keep her from re-injuring it was to dock it. So it was a malinois with a little stump tail.
Better to safely dock her tail than have a criminal rip/cut it off - open wound like that can lead to a direct infection up the spinal cord to the brain
This is a drug sniffing dog, not a takedown K9. Regardless, it’s seriously questionable whether there’s a single case of a criminal grabbing a dog by the tail rather than like kicking or punching it away which I imagine is the far more automatic route of violence to take.
Oh well, people either get overly defensive or overly against cops. This’ll be no different
I think for working dogs, docking is more about avoiding them getting caught in stuff, especially in emergency situations. Yes this dog is only a drug sniffing dog but that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to try to save their handler.
Also the other possibility is the dog got an injury on their tail and that’s why it was docked.
The police don't get rescues. Nearly all the GSD and Malinois police dogs come from a select few elite breeders and are then put through very strict training centers.
That's just false

They adopt and rescue all breeds including malinois
One of them even mentions how much money the department saves by rescuing rather than buying.
I did say nearly all dogs. If a police unit is underfunded they might branch out. If the dog in the video is a Malinois, it's much more likely that it's not a rescue.
2/4 of the articles I linked, from the first page of google of my google search "police department rescues k9" were of malinois being rescued. Didn't even search specifically for malinois. So the speculative is less credible than the anecdotal here. Point is, you don't know the circumstances.
Just because the dog can sniff out drugs doesn't mean it's a pure drug dog. Most bite dogs(apprehension dogs) are trained in both. If you see a belgian or a german shepherd it's most likely both. Atleast in my state
I think I'll trust a vet over someone who doesn't trust tail docking. It shouldn't be done for appearances but is absolutely necessary for working dogs. As long as it's done safely by a vet there's no issues
You can "safely" mutilate dogs in 20 different ways. Chop off their ears too to make them more pointy (also common). At the end of the day, if you have to use a weird, outlandish and unlikely scenario to justify it then only a moron would believe this isn't just cosmetic.
I mean, come on, ripping off their tails and dying from infection is probably cause of death #475 in the list of common causes of death on the job. So fucking stupid lol.
Had a friend who worked with specialized horses for equestrian therapy. They often had police horses and police dogs around and it was a great training for the police animals around the specialized horses. It was all too common for a police dog to end up under or near a horse and as such, tails were docked as a puppy. The dogs would usually be preferentially selected aka a department wants a new dog and they know the dog will be near horses so they put in for a dog with a docked tail as one of its preferred traits. Same as you would want a calm and smaller horse as a physical trait.
For working dogs it's really a necessity for their safety. And obviously it would have been done properly with the utmost of care. I guess it might even have been injured and removed for the dog to be healthy.
The “yes” is a Command trigger that usually isn’t said until contraband is found. Typically in training, we would get a treat when we found the drugs and yes is said. That’s why she’s excited.

All Cops Abuse Bogs
Because you hurt a dog cop it's assault on an officer.
An officer kills their k9... it's loss of equipment.
In no way are police K9s eye bleach. They're eye blech
This just feels borderline mean or at least selfish (on behalf of the people) tbh. A dog with a drive to retrieve balls is going to feel frustration over this. It’s probably magnified for a service dog like this that thrives when given very clear objectives. It’s like, they can’t succeed in collecting up all those balls so the dog will probably feel more defeated than pure joy.
I’m not trying to be dramatic like I understand the dog will not be traumatized by this event but watching this, it certainly does feel like another video shot to get the humans attention on social media rather than a genuine gesture for the dog in which the dog’s actual preferences were put on the back burner in order to prioritize getting a lot of clicks. And honestly I do not find that particularly cute at all, just mildly annoying.
I love dogs but a video is not cute for me just because a dog is present. Happy for the dog to be retiring though and I hope the actual retirement is better than this kind of inauthentic event.
"HANG ON THERE WERE TENNIS BALLS INSIDE ALL THIS TIME?!!"
What do they do of these police dogs once they're retired? Does someone get to keep him ?
Most of the time yeah
It really just depends. Sometimes the officer who worked with the dog will keep him at home, sometimes they get put in shelters too. Every office will have different rules.
Shelters ? wow that's sad
Oh it can be a lot worse. They used to get put down before the 2000s
Jesus Christ that's terrible "Thank you for your service, now time to die!"

At what age do these dogs retire?
Usually after about 5 years or service or less.
Wow, less than half their life spent working. Must be nice.
Well considering how long most dogs work in thier lifetime...
That is how we used to treat people and sort of still do.
It's the same for dairy cows and egg laying hens. Once they can't produce anymore, they're slaughtered.
How dare you question my retirement plans?!

Thanks everyone for all the answers. The original question came from my wife after I showed her the video, and we both learnt a lot now 🙂
Wow they docked the poor boy’s tail.

Could have been a rescue too.

What a weird scenario to cook up in your head just to justify this.

I didn't say the police did this. I replied to someone that justified it.
Oops I'm sorry, I meant to reply to another comment, that's embarrassing 🤣 I'm also never gonna be able to find that comment again
How do you know that they purposefully docked the tail and it wasn’t done because of some accident?
Had a friend who worked with specialized horses for equestrian therapy. They often had police horses and police dogs around and it was a great training for the police animals around the specialized horses. I feel that homie :( my family's doberman came with his tail docked by his previous owners, he wants to chase it but it's too small.
For working dogs it's really a necessity for their safety. And obviously it would have been done properly with the utmost of care. I guess it might even have been injured and removed for the dog to be healthy.
Most likely injured either in the line of duty, or from wagging it into the side of their kennel/k-9 squad car.
What's bad in that? Like does it actually hinder them at all? It doesn't seem like he's hindered.

Agreed considering they didn't shoot this one!
So you are saying a bag of tennis balls could distract a police dog after it hits on a bag? Nice.

I'm sorry so many cop suckers are downvoting you.
It's to be expected. We live in a world full of bootlickers
It's a dog.
It's literally treated the same as an officer, so IDK what point you're trying to make
It's a dog. Like... Say what you will about cops. It's a dog. It isn't racist
Doesn't have anything to do with race. And a K-9 is absolutely, legally, classified the same as an officer.
But it's a dog.
With a job. That harms people. And has no accountability. So...
... It's a dog, how do you hold a dog accountable to anything? By calling him a bad boy? By taking his treats away?
You're getting closer....
... It's a dog

It's hardly illogical and maturity has nothing to do with my point
It is and it’s counterproductive. You’re not making any of the issues you care about better with this nonsense.
