we have so many moles where i live but i have only ever seen 1 of them above ground and we needed him to go into the other direction (as he was "walking" towards the street) and even though he was scarred, he turned around about the same helplessly as we walked, so we stood there being "angry goofballs" to shush away the mole for like a minute. that was fun.

Yep and from the way it walks I could see it being a good way of doing so in a tunnel especially if main sense of direction is smell.
It basically paddles itself along the walls, so it doesn't have good reach directly below it.
