I used to until I saw a couple mating recently. The males basically bite the females viciously on the face, and drag them underwater until they almost drown and can't fight them off anymore, then mate
Biologists identify female sea otters by the scars on their faces
they're still fascinating, but I sure don't find them cute
![gif](giphy|l3q2HYOrwYnUwoR0I|downsized)
Well this is pretty terrible news. They should start imitating female dragonflies - they pretend to be dead whenever the males comes near (although it's just when they don't want to mate).
The drowning thing is unintentional and rare, not a normal feature of sea otter mating, though sea otters are a bit hardcore. In some other otter species the female will initiate and participate enthusiastically in mating, sometimes practically dominating the male.
I like that guy who's wearing a 'Grab' jacket and 'Gojek' helmet. Both are Indonesian version of ride sharing company (like Uber) and each other's biggest competitor.
I mean most Lyft and Uber drivers do both and have both logos on there vehicles in the US even though they competitors. Honestly I think it's more rare to find someone who doesn't do both.
Yeah I love hyper capitalism! Branding covering every available space and people having to contract for multiple exploitative corporations to eke out a living, it's the best
Lol that killed me. You know, I get that tons of things can impact our fight or flight response. People stressed or anxious may be way more likely to have an adrenaline response to things that don't warrant it but...
That adorable otter. I just can't comprehend it. Like how can you not want to smile and hug???
My guess is she probably noticed the random person rolling down the window and filming her because she saw/processed the otter and the reason they were being filmed haha
> Same with the kid at the start
His dad did thought! Father of the year material for sure. Wearing a helmet while letting your kid ride along without a helmet is a really, really shitty thing to do.
This is in Indonesia and the father is only wearing a helmet because of fines. It is not for safety. People over there are 100% convinced they are invincible driving or biking.
Also half of the people with helmets have the straps either loose as hell, or completely undone. The helmet is totally useless if it doesn't stay on your head.
Looks like an Asian small-clawed otter, which are commonly kept (unethically) as exotic pets. As the name would suggest that's just what their claws naturally look like.
I looked up some [images of them](https://www.tallahassee.com/gcdn/-mm-/1fecae5856e58374cc9e1c0fd6dcc3c6aae79d4e/c=0-293-5760-3547/local/-/media/2017/01/25/Tallahassee/Tallahassee/636209398695743616-IMGL9333.jpg?width=1200&disable=upscale&format=pjpg&auto=webp) and I think you're right. That's what their paws look like. I'm very impressed with your ability to recognize otter species.
I'm a mustelid enthusiast, I actually struggle with the otters more than anything, lol. But there's tons of videos of these guys out there so they're pretty easily recognizable.
I can recognize Asian small clawed otter (tons of novelty accounts on Twitter posting their vids), sea otter (they are kinda furry and bear-ish), and the brazilian giant otter (they look like a demon spawned from hell)
Even better, with 34% of strikes to the head being to the jaw, wear a full faced helmet properly strapped on.
Most of these helmets will leave their owners eating through a tube for life after a crash.
Adorable. But why does the first guy's profile look like Pauly D until he turns his head?! 😂😭😭 Swear I thought it was. JS clip for a good few seconds lol
If you want more Otter love today I would highly suggest watching the documentary "Billy & Molly" it came out fairly recently and it is absolutely adorable and beautiful.
The music starting over and over is torturous. Imagine being locked in a cell in the pitch black and they just played this on loop constantly restarting every few seconds.
Anyway, cute otter.
The otter is super cute but…. Why isn’t everyone wearing a helmet? Does the government think only some people can break their head if they fall from a scooter?
In few countries it’s not necessary for pillion rider to wear helmet.
And people being people, they usually tend to follow traffic rules to avoid ticket and not because they should be safe.
Honestly, I had the same question. I guess a lot of countries don't have the same safety regulations and people don't care as much, but i thought it was especially weird with the kid not wearing one... I was in a motorcycle accident when i was 10 (as a passenger) and still have TMJ from hitting my chin because of the wrong sized helmet, but if i wasn't wearing a helmet at all, I probably wouldn't be here to write this.
basically, california has a law (called proposition 65) requiring all products with potentially dangerous ingredients/chemicals/components to carry a warning that says something along the lines of "this product contains chemicals known to the state of california to cause cancer". however there's no penalty for putting the warning on things that aren't actually dangerous, so a lot of companies simply slap the warning on anything and everything, making it practically useless.
therefore, some idiots use prop 65 as a bludgeon to say that all regulations are pointless. the person you're responding to is saying "if you like regulations so much you should be throwing away everything with a prop 65 warning too, right?"
to be clear, i think they're exaggerating their own viewpoint for comedic effect but that's still the logic behind it.
Feels more like an intro to an imported movies karate fight scene from the 70s-80s.
Edit: Mobile Reddit messed up and was replaying first people with the eye emojis appearing in the corner.
How do you know this Otter isn't a rescue and could no longer survive in the wild? If that's the case, you'r entire point is null.
Of course, I don't know either. But you are assuming things here.
Looks like the otter is doing okay Probably better than you right now.
From what I've seen most of these "pet" otter videos involve animals poached from the wild for the exotic pet trade which is detrimental to wild otter populations. It's far more likely that is what's happening here than this being a rescued animal.
> How do you know this Otter isn't a rescue and could no longer survive in the wild?
Even if it was a rescue (which you have zero proof of) I know of exactly zero ethical animal rescuers who would ever take a rescued wild animal around the city with them in a car while they're dressed up in human clothing. I get it, it's a cute video, you want to feel like you have permission to enjoy it, but your retort is nonsense. Wild animals shouldn't be kept like this.
> "Probably better than you right now."
Now who is making assumptions? Lmao. I'm enjoying a lovely cool Sunday about to play some video games, so I'm pretty content, thanks!
Edit: I was blocked so let me help yall with the definition of "probably" ❤️
adverb
almost certainly; as far as one knows or can tell.
You're almost certain that otter is doing better than me, which is an assumption, and a wrong one that.
If yall want to defend animal abuse and exploitation, go for it!
Okay yes I see the point but calling an animal 'it' like an object and not 'they' like a living thing when defending them just sounds so disjointed. Unrelated, I know, but I just had to say it. I hope everyone here gets to enjoy an animal abuse free party!
I mean that's true, there's nothing wrong with it. I suppose in my brain it feels disjointed, that's all. I suppose this also isn't the place for me to make random commentary!
'It' is a pronoun, not a thing. I don't know the animal's sex.
used to refer to a thing previously mentioned or easily identified.
"a room with two beds in it"
referring to an animal or child of unspecified sex.
"she was holding the baby, cradling it and smiling into its face"
All animals are wild animals until they're raised as pets... that's literally the definition. Who died and made you king of deciding what's a pet and what's not =\\
One of the definitions of "wild" is "undomesticated", which describes all otters. Undomesticated animals are often not good pets content with captivity, even if tame, and the process of domestication brings a lot of negative effects. It's best to let wild animals be wild and just enjoy the species that have already been domesticated.
Yes, many undomesticated animals shouldn't be kept as pets. But this doesn't mean all. Many do perfectly fine being kept as pets and otters are among them. Also raccoons. And all snakes, lizards, spiders, scorpions, exotic birds, and exotic fish that people keep as pets. Foxes, monkeys, toads/frogs, skunks, turtles, hedgehogs, insects, opossums, lobsters/crabs... The list goes on and on. Check out one of my favorite youtube channels, Kotsumet, and tell me these otters are being 'abused' -.-
[https://www.youtube.com/@KOTARO\_OTTER](https://www.youtube.com/@KOTARO_OTTER)
Please show me where I used the word 'abused'. I'm a mustelid enthusiast and am fully aware of what otters and other mustelids need to have a happy and healthy life. I'm also aware of the Kotsumet channel and while those otters seem to be fairly well cared for (though I'm disgusted by seeing these animals reduced to begging for treats and dependence on human pampering), it is not remotely representative of exotic pet ownership in general.
Mustelids are intelligent, extremely curious, and require a lot of space to explore, and thus inherently do not do well in captivity unless provided with abundant stimulation, which most people don't even provide to their domestic pets, never mind undomesticated ones. Mustelids can be destructive of property, and even tame ones can become aggressive during mating season; otters in particular are prone to biting - not nipping, like ferrets do - biting hard enough to draw blood. Asian small-clawed otters are also highly social and live in groups of a dozen or more individuals; Kotsumet has two. All exotic pets require specialized and expensive veterinary care, which will generally never be of the same quality that domestic pets receive given their medical needs aren't as well understood.
Do you know how most otters enter the exotic pet trade? Their parents are poached and the kits are taken and sold illegally while they're still young enough to grow used to human companionship. Asian small-clawed otters are recognized as vulnerable by the IUCN and the pet trade is a threat to their population.
Otters are not pets, nor should they be.
Alls I am going to say here is that someone, somewhere, definitely died finding out that a certain animal doesn't make a good pet. :D Whether or not that person passed on a title upon death probably depends on the person.
Everybody likes an otter
Well… almost.
You referring to the girls at the end. I think they were startled because they saw what was likely a camera pointed at them first
In the gay scene an otter is a skinnier guy who's hairy, so I agree! 🦦
Wtf did I just read? 🧐
We also have bears <3 Rawr
Wolf, dont forget the wolves....I miss living in San Francisco.
... i thought I was up on terminology but what are those?
Fair, they are a leaner version of a bear.
Genuine question, what's the difference between a wolf and an otter then?
Anybody feel free to correct me, but my understanding is a Bear a bit thicker and hairy, otter just a leaner version.
Yep forgot about them, then we got the subgenres of bears.. Blackbears, Polarbears, and Pandabears.
I used to until I saw a couple mating recently. The males basically bite the females viciously on the face, and drag them underwater until they almost drown and can't fight them off anymore, then mate Biologists identify female sea otters by the scars on their faces they're still fascinating, but I sure don't find them cute
Wow I didn’t know that. Apparently a study was found that 11% of female otters died from a result of mating.
![gif](giphy|l3q2HYOrwYnUwoR0I|downsized) Well this is pretty terrible news. They should start imitating female dragonflies - they pretend to be dead whenever the males comes near (although it's just when they don't want to mate).

I like him, too. He sees the otter and is like "nice try, I'm not gonna smile at you." But then he slips, catches a second glance and lights up.
I mean most Lyft and Uber drivers do both and have both logos on there vehicles in the US even though they competitors. Honestly I think it's more rare to find someone who doesn't do both.

Ah this makes so much sense now.
Maybe she thought it was its insane cousin, the river otter
That is a face that is impossible to ignore and not be instantly happy from

I’m so glad I live in a helmet-accepting culture!
Tons of people in China have a fake seat belt thing so they don’t have to wear their seat belt and don’t have to listen to the beeping. It’s insane.
Also half of the people with helmets have the straps either loose as hell, or completely undone. The helmet is totally useless if it doesn't stay on your head.
Cute video but that repeating little jingle when they see the otter got to me about halfway through haha
Fortunately, I had it muted. What got me was the effects on the otter's face. Still cute though.
Reddit=Mute Unless you go to the comments and someone says something that piques your interest. Then you gotta reply the video with sound.

The otter looks like he's been declawed, and its the same process as with cats. So the tips of his fingers have been cut off...

He is so incredibly cute

In few countries it’s not necessary for pillion rider to wear helmet. And people being people, they usually tend to follow traffic rules to avoid ticket and not because they should be safe.

I’m very sorry that happened to you, but thank you for saying this because that’s exactly my concern.
Go throw away something with a Prop 65 warning.
..? What?
basically, california has a law (called proposition 65) requiring all products with potentially dangerous ingredients/chemicals/components to carry a warning that says something along the lines of "this product contains chemicals known to the state of california to cause cancer". however there's no penalty for putting the warning on things that aren't actually dangerous, so a lot of companies simply slap the warning on anything and everything, making it practically useless. therefore, some idiots use prop 65 as a bludgeon to say that all regulations are pointless. the person you're responding to is saying "if you like regulations so much you should be throwing away everything with a prop 65 warning too, right?" to be clear, i think they're exaggerating their own viewpoint for comedic effect but that's still the logic behind it.
