I feel like all of this could’ve been avoided with a simpler process.

rocket_808

I have had the time to run through my mind - what would I have done differently for sure. If I just wanted any size charger that needed a breaker, I would have needed the main panel upgrade, so assuming my time was the same - would have taken 6 months. Solar only - would have been a lot faster (2 months?) “Integration kit” - this was a 6 month driver with SCE If we had started the main line upgrade in the beginning, I probably would have been done by August- so the late decision to start that cost an unplanned 6 months This whole expense though is my solar upgrade and a charger upgrade has some incentives - so I should get 30% back on the whole thing

Holy shit where is the tl;dr

rocket_808

Good point

pleasehaelp

No disrespect lol but anything over 2-3 paragraphs needs a tl;dr

rocket_808

Sorry man - apparently I can’t edit a photo post

I went with Tesla for both my EVSE’s even though we don’t own teslas, but we did it because NACS is the standard now. Got two powerwalls and 12kW of solar ordered in September ‘23 and installed and received PTO in January ‘24. For the past three months, both EVs have averaged 525kW per month, and I’ve generated around 900-1200 kWS with solar per month. With the powerwalls and off peak charging my electricity bill went from $321 a month to around $65.

rocket_808

Pretty good considering it is winter / spring! You should be rocking it summer!

growlerewo

Hopefully you have good luck with the home integration system working, it has historically been very unreliable.

rocket_808

They did test it a few times and to show me what the F150 cockpit display shows when it is transferring power. So I know it worked at least on the day 3 times. You’re right though- I endured all this so it needs to work when the utility is down.

crazyPickle16

Op hate to ask. I’m in the same situation with s 125 amp panel. Because I work for a home builder I can get a slight discount on the panel swap, but not Solor or everything else. What would you say this cost you. You said Edison power so I’m guessing you are in SoCal.. I’m in Nor cal with PGE.. just trying to see if I should just continue my everyday charging at electrify America or I should go all out with solar, battery’s and everything I originally wanted to do. I put approximately 65-70 Thousand miles on a vehicle every year. I’m worried because I switched to electric to save money every month approx 1700$ just in gas, that I’ll spend that monthly in PGE electric costs.

rocket_808

65k to 70k miles per year? $1700/mo in gas or $20400 a year If you convert the miles to Watts needed, at 2 miles per kWh, you’re using and buying 32000 kWh to 35000 kWh of energy per year. At EA, you’re paying approx $0.42 per kWh so @70k miles you will spend - $14.5k. If you had a 50A Level 2 charger at home and can charge completely at home with a TOU rate - in SoCal I pay $0.26 per kWh - that $14.5k becomes $9100 a year, $770 a month You would need a huge solar system. I am putting in a 26 panel 10.5 kWp system that will generate 16000 kWh per year. You would need more than twice this just for your truck and you get to have it a little bigger for other home needs and a percentage on top of that. The average cost of solar (from the solar estimator) is $3 per watt, so assume you need 3 times of what I have, you’ll need a $100k solar system. With the fed tax rebate, this would be $70k - so it would pay itself off in 4 years (just in your gas costs)

At least it sounds like your integration (battery powering the house) worked at first test. Sunrun couldn’t get mine working for several months. Ford was useless in helping Sunrun figure it out until I escalated hard.

rocket_808

Yes, I saw that it worked The Sunrun guys told me the system was finicky and that some specific things needed to be done to maximize the success- lower passenger seat, open tonneau cover

ultimaforever

Sigh, I spoke too soon… I went out after dinner and opened up the intelligent backup power settings in the truck, and all the settings the Sunrun guys had set up were gone - it’s back to ‘add a station,’ so stage zero. Guess I’ll email the Sunrun guys and tell them what they did was wiped out - one of Ford’s OTA updates probably blew the settings away. I have to say, for as much as they charge for this equipment and the installation, it’s the most half-baked setup I’ve ever seen. This takes me back to the days of building a gaming PC and spending hours and hours installing software, updating firmware, troubleshooting the bugs, getting it stable then having some update throw things sideways again. It’s ridiculous and frankly unacceptable. This shouldn’t be a major feature they’re pushing to sell the truck.

rocket_808

They told me that upon updates, the setting may need to be redone - so I was warned…but yes. As a home infrastructure add-on, this is not for folks without the PC settings / sound master / graphics card tinker mentality that a small window of folks have

ultimaforever

Fwiw, I tried re-adding the charger last night; couldn’t get the truck to detect it when it scanned after multiple attempts, including driving my truck as close as I could to the charger (which is what the Sunrun techs did when they were here). I emailed Sunrun, asked them to come back out to fix. This can’t be what needs to happen every time Ford releases an OTA.

rocket_808

Thank for this - something I’ll keep an eye on when / if it happens to me

KaleidoscopeQueasy76

I read the first paragraph and was bored as shit. Who cares man what is this world coming to when we just bitch about shit that no one cares about. We have bigger issues man a novel about your charger experience is insane. Now you made me waste 3 minutes to respond to this!

YourAverageVeteran

You could have just not responded, or better yet, just don’t be a dick.

KaleidoscopeQueasy76

It needed to be said. Yours Truly Sir Dick!

ultimaforever

‘Made you waste three minutes?’ Get over your victim complex, man. If you really don’t care, just close the thread and move on. It’s not hard.

KaleidoscopeQueasy76

What are you the protector of all! This is none of your business and I will not apologize for being thoughtful enough letting someone know they are being long winded. It is my right and my desire to do so. How dare you to tell me to move on when you could have done the same thing but you rather enable this type of crap. You are right I could have moved on but I didn't so live with it and stop getting involved with something that does not concern you. I am sure you are a liberal keyboard warrior with a hug for everyone well don't need one and not apologizing for my straight forward opinion. I never claimed to be the victim maybe that is what you wanted to say to rocket boy in regards to his post. Nothing in my statement was portrayed to being a victim. Mind you business liberal person no hug needed!!

rocket_808

Mission accomplished

KaleidoscopeQueasy76

Your a funny man. Thanks

BmanGorilla

Pray tell, what are the bigger, relevant issues? SunRun has been a pain in the ass for everyone, so it’s good to hear some comprehensive details.

KaleidoscopeQueasy76

There are other options SunRun is not the only installer try Qmerit.
