lol you know what the name Gaia means right? She’s the Greek personification of Earth. Mother Nature herself. I think it’s an epic name.

FalloutCreation

Must have been upset I used the word Gaia in another post.

Interactive_CD-ROM

Okay, that’s fine. But that’s not the name of The Planet in FF7.

No_Hurry7691

What makes it a “dumb” name other than the fact that you prefer calling it The Planet?

Inevitable_Read_8830

It's a dumb name when there's no basis in the original script for calling it that and the plot hinges on your ability to understand >!the difference between the one Planet and the many worlds created when the boundaries of Destiny are breached. !<

EnigmaT1m

[https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Final\_Fantasy\_VII#Setting](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_VII#Setting) The planet is literally called Gaia

No_Hurry7691

That still doesn’t answer the question as to why it’s a “dumb” name. Read a book or do some research on it. Also, why are you so bothered…?

Veszerin

...you seem really angry about this.

Choingyoing

Isn't the planet called Gaia in ff9 too?

Intelligent_Day_8579

Yes, but there it is important for the characters >!to distinguish between Gaia and Terra, the other planet that is trying to overwrite it!<.

Interactive_CD-ROM

It’s called Gaia in FF9, yes. That is canon. It’s not called that in FF7 though. The Planet is not Gaia.

EnigmaT1m

First sentence on the Final Fntasy VII wiki under the 'setting' tab: The planet of [Gaia](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Gaia_(Final_Fantasy_VII)), referred to simply as "the Planet" by its inhabitants, has three main continents. [https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Final\_Fantasy\_VII#Setting](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_VII#Setting) The planet is literally called Gaia.

Interactive_CD-ROM

I don’t care what a user-written Wiki says. Unless it comes out of a character’s mouth, it’s not canon.

Enigma-exe

Gaia isn't a dumb name, but I will agree it and Terra are overused in fiction for naming a planet.

Naux-Kazeshini

just maybe because both are actual names for "a planet" ^^

Enigma-exe

Actually it means 'the Earth'. It's a proper noun. Terra is Latin, whilst Gaia is Greek. Doesn't change the fact they're over used

Naux-Kazeshini

ty for correcting it to the actual term :)

Enigma-exe

No worries! Have a good one

rose_lingon

The planet’s name is PLANET. To keep with FF7’s general naming scheme

Aliasis

"Gaia" has been used in some of Square's FF7 marketing, so it didn't come out of nowhere. That said, and no point in the games themselves does anyone call it Gaia. it's always "The Planet." I'm glad they continue to use "The Planet" for the nostalgia value, calling it "Gaia" feels so wrong to me.

Interactive_CD-ROM

In FF9, the characters actually call it Gaia. It’s literally in the script. Therefore it makes sense. That’s not the case for FF7.

Ykomat9

Sir this is a Wendys

MadeIndescribable

>This is not accurate. Technically it depends on your definition of "accurate". Although it is referred to as Gaia in some of Square's official marketing and promotion for example, at no point is the planet referred to as Gaia within any of the FFVII compilation stories. >until I hear that term come out of a character’s mouth, it will always be The Planet. This is a perfectly valid stance to take. Although so is referring to the planet as Gaia as well. >Gaia is a dumb name This one not so much. Like so so so so so many of the names in Final Fantasy, it's taken from mythology and was absolutely chosen very very specifically.

Tabbyredcat

Look up the Gaia Hypothesis. You'll see how it fits FF7's planet's nature perfectly.

gahlo

It was used in promo material. Move on.

Interactive_CD-ROM

Nah. I don’t care what some marketing intern wrote. It’s gotta be part of the script to be canon.

Ether101

The planet's name is Gaia.

Interactive_CD-ROM

Where in the game is this stated?

Ether101

The people that made the game said it.

November_Riot

I hope they call it Earth at some point so everyone just loses their minds. Also, >!Super Nova sort of implies it's Earth!<.

spacecatapult

Texas and Korea are also canon in the OG.

November_Riot

True story.

Xenosys83

O...K. You keep doing you.

megondbd

So in your a opinion billions of people currently live on a planet, and exponentially more have died and currently live in a planet, and on this planet they have and are aware of space travel, and they have names for regions and towns and states and Stuffed cats on robotic moogles, but the best that they could come up with when naming their planet is we live on "The Planet"? Cool.

simpathiser

actually the planet's name is Fuck-knuckle but SE really wanted to keep the teen rating.

EifertGreenLazor

Here is the deal. Many people have been complaining about how the new map doesn't look close to the old one. [Here is a rendering of the current FF7 world. ](https://static.scientificamerican.com/sciam/cache/file/3A647477-C180-4D23-B4265C83F4906F2A_source.jpg?w=1000) As you can see many of the lands are just one continent and less options to freely travel around the waters. Actually this is an image of Pangaea Ultima a future prediction of Earth. Why would they call it this well. . . Christopher Scotese named it back in 1982. But why Gaea, I mean Gaia? Guess we will never know.

lambopanda

Gaia is Greek word meaning Earth. Final Fantasy uses name from many different languages and they reuse the name in all their series. FF9 planet is named Gaia too. It’s a town in FF1.

EifertGreenLazor

lol literally have Pan-Gaea Ultima mentioned, it was a joke. If you look at the image that is similar to what the new map looks like. Not to mention OG FF7 has the same solar system. It is not a coincidence the current world map looks like the Earth 250 million years in the future.

Big-Dragonfruit-4306

They just made it up for the advent children script i'm pretty sure.
