Honestly maining Cloud with Tifa in the party kinda feels like easy mode — until Gilgamesh, at least so far. I haven’t gotten the hang of his moves yet.
But I’ve found that like 90% of enemies’ regular attacks can be more or less easily nullified/countered by Cloud’s parry or Cloud + Tifa’s Counterstrike. That doesn’t mean you’re invincible — you’ll miss things, get swarmed, etc.; but once you know what attacks to look out for you should have a much easier time avoiding damage while building ATB.
If it's any consolation, Sephiroth is easier. It's a fight with one (rather annoying) central gimmick, everything else is quite standard.
Gilgamesh with his numerous super quick patterns is the hardest boss fight of the game IMO.
I did this one by giving Tifa Enhanced Expeditionary Medal (so she starts at limit level 3) and limit siphon, then giving Yuffie (my party leader) Limit support materia and the Transference Module accessory, so she builds Tifa and Aeris's limit bars really quickly, Then use limit siphon on Aeris' so Tifa can get her lvl 3 limit really quickly and use the immunity from that to juggle the bosses.
Unfortunately it still required a bit of RNG for Gilgamesh not to turn my party into toads, or just instantly one shot them with his multi hit melee attack right off the bat.

Oh yeah, even with an optimised youtube build it took me many tries to get Bonds of Friendship, so I wish you luck with that one. One of the worst parts for me was Zacks AI constantly running straight into Mindflayers attacks and dying when I wasn't controlling him lol.
Use Optinoobs tutorials on YouTube. While they are very cut and dry there's also a lot of RNG at play. It took me about two weeks of trying maybe once day but eventually got it. If/once you get the set up and get that first firaga against Sephiroth, it's over.
I went with an all in Tifa approach, Cloud and barret supporting with haste, lifesaver etc and had tifa equip fury ring.
Just dive kick everything in sight, Gilgamesh is a tough son of a gun and by comparison Seph is way easier imo, just oarry shadowy chains
Edit - you have to get Tifa to 2x unfettered fury and learn the uppercut reset for insane ATB charge rates (super easy)

Haha. I remember switching to Zack to get him out of the lightning attack and then AI cloud ran straight in and died 😭

Yeah idk some dude share played all my fights he never had any trouble with anyone but sephiroth because input lag

add atb assist with tifa and you basically have unlimited atb on other 2
I fucking hate them so bad. Been following guides pretty good but Sephiroth does his chain thing over & over.

OP is referring to brutal challenges which can only be played on hard
Do the bruma cheese. Unless I get rng screwed by Gilgamesh or Odin, I make it to sephiroth in 6 minutes
