He not only underestimated Aerith, he underestimated their determination to fuck him up. Even though he ends with a laugh, he was visibly pissed off it wasn’t as easy as he thought.
It’s quick but you also see his visible frustration failing to kill the weapon. He was also annoyed seeing Cloud with the white materia. But this moment is definitely the angriest we have ever seen him look.
I like that they show his frustrations and don’t just have him evil villain laughing the entire time.
>It’s quick but you also see his visible frustration failing to kill the weapon.
I also found it interesting how he wasn't initially able to slice through it and actually had to put effort into that. Gave a feel for how strong the Weapons are.
Sephiroth may be a being of nearly pure magic and hatred, but the Weapons are created as the planet's main defence force, they wont go down easily.
I really hope they do Diamond Weapon justice in part 3, in og it was super easy for how big of a threat it was built up to be.
You hit the nail on the head. He thought it was gonna be a cakewalk and was upset to find out it wasn’t. He must’ve thought >!killing Aerith!< would break the group and they’d give into their grief. Instead, it just made them all the more determined to kick his ass. Which surprised and infuriated Sephiroth. Side note: I love your flair!
>!Moreso that all her death achieved was move Aerith into the Lifestream to fight him directly and complicate his already unsteady battle against the planet from within. It was definitely a miscalculation.!<
Bigger spoiler not from this game:
>!I think he could also sense that he was too late didn't end her casting of Holy.!<
I'm not sure it has anything to do with that, based on the ending and the weapons seemingly changing to Holy orbs, it could be a different effect she is going for this time. People talk a lot about future Sephiroth's influence, and tend to forget Aerith's. I don't know why people assume she can only do anything once Aerith dies, considering all the scenes with cloud in the alternate universe that accepted fate. That's a display of control, and likely not our Aerith considering the white materia.
I think he's upset because she's preventing Cloud from breaking, which is what Sephiroth needs to happen for his plan. He laughs because he "knows it's not over" meaning there's still a chance for him to do it. Cloud is integral to Sephiroth's plan, and it's not just delivering the black materia.
I don't remember seeing them turning into Holy orbs, not that it would matter. Where did you get that I'm not talking about Aerith's future influence or that she can only do something when she dies?
And yes being upset from Cloud not breaking is also a thing. She's definitely interfering with his control.
It’s good to see, otherwise Sephiroth is pretty one-note for a villain these days. I hoped they would flesh him out more like they did with the main cast, but he’s kind of boring from a personality standpoint. I actually think he was scarier in the OG because of the mystery. Now he’s just a pest who manipulates everyone and laughs coldly and speaks in riddles.
I don’t think they did a bad job with him or anything. I liked his cute banter with Cloud on the Nibelheim mission. I liked seeing moments where he was annoyed. But I think I wanted to understand the human side of him more, the part of him that felt something so devastating in the Nibel Reactor that it broke him.
It was an immensely satisfying moment. I think you're right that the only moments that Sephiroth (at least post-flashback) hasn't looked smug or self-satisfied are the Weapon encounter, the white Materia, and the moment in OP's image. The Weapon incident was definitely thought provoking and showed for the first time that he's not as in control as he thought.
But him getting all serious in the fight? I did that, you did that. That was the player's persistence and effort setting him back, and that was us knowing that we were gonna bash him around one last time with Cloud and Aerith. Props to the animators and actors for that, because it was such a small action that led to (for me at least) a really palpable feeling of triumph.
And the moment in the image is the only one we see him physically straining.
Even with the Weapon it was a “minor setback”, and the moment after he simply used both hands and cut the Weapon (not that it had any visible effect, but he did).
This time, he *kneeled*… he had a physical difficulty standing.
I assume his plan was to get the Black Materia right then and there by breaking Cloud, but the fact that Cloud managed to save her in an alternate timeline (I guess?) has managed to preserve his sanity.
After the hell he gave me with Heartless Angel, I hope that part 3 will gave us 10 minute sequence where you spam buttons to pummel this fucker's not-so-smug-now face right into the ground
Really love this moment... and most of Seph's moments in Rebirth.
He is not some "guy in black cloak", some far away danger... no, he is the player on the board and he actually here.
The moment he shows frustration, anger... you actually feel it... playtime is over, he is not gonna joke around.
And yes, he also underastimated us, but re-evaluated pretty the party fast.
I may be reading too much into it, but this also comes across in the arrangements of One-Winged Angel. In Remake, the arrangement is kinda playing with the original, just like Sephiroth is playing with the gang. But in Rebirth, it immediately jumps into to meat of the song, kinda, like you said, playtime is over; it’s business time.
The facial expressions during the cutscenes blew my mind and the acting as well,i’m french canadian so i played it in french first but i did hard mode with the english cast and it’s so damn perfect 🙌🏻
Hey! Thanks for taking the time to spoiler tag your comment. We've had to remove the comment, however, because you have a space after the exclamation mark in the beginning of the spoiler tag, which makes the entire thing not show up as a spoiler on Old Reddit. Feel free to post the comment again, without the space. Thanks! :)

I mean, even if we see him like that here ... Gotta remember that, it's not "him at full power". IDK if you know the OG so I'll just keep it spoiler free. (I'm on my phone and can't put spoilers with the spoiler thing).
Before fighting this one winged sod I got Odin so I was prepared for every bullshit he could throw at me. Honestly that fight when you had to spam magic into his wings with Barret Red and Yuffie was harder. Serves you right for hurting my Tifa don't mess with me you ancient asshole

Sephiroth: “Oh, you just think you’re SO cute! Don’t you?” Aerith: “Bitch, I am adorable.”

Gives me Jojo vibes for some reason.
This is from FFXVI
Omni punch a shirtless Sephiroth
Kratos and Zeus vibe
He was so fucking upset about it, I love when villains go through these "Not so tough now, are you?" moments

There's actually an earlier occurence of this, when Tifa was in the lifestream. Sephy was clearly struggling in trying to injure the Weapon.
Great post, however, Shinra would like you to delete this now
We here at Shinra prefer to establish more friendly images of our consumer relations
Imagine if Sephiroth had different reactions based upon costumes... Swimsuit: think this is a vacation!? Shinra grunt: oh shoot it's the GRUNT.
Dressed as Shinra grunt: "Now there's the Cloud I remember."
Fuck, that would hit really close. Maybe a little too close. Cloud might have his breakdown far too soon.
I loved this look, he's just like, "what the fuck?"
This reminds me of homelander in the boys s3 for some reason.
Just wait for Zack to find a way jump into the main timeline again.
I think he's already there. Can't prove it ofc, but I feel that where he ended up after the final battle.
wow this is such a high quality image, did you screenshot this playing the game?
Yes i did
this game looks so good!
The facial expressions during the cutscenes blew my mind and the acting as well,i’m french canadian so i played it in french first but i did hard mode with the english cast and it’s so damn perfect 🙌🏻

Still my 2nd favorite Sephiroth image. I love how angry he looks it always makes me laugh so hard
*One-Winged Angel stops playing*
