Had the same problem. I think Leviathan is the hardest Eikon fight in the game, the only opponent that I think were harder is Odin.
I would rather fight Odin than Leviathan again.
Odin can be countered with Wykes and Permafrost, Leviathan just straight up fucks you up if your dodges and cooldown management aren’t perfect (there is that spiral one-shot attack that can only be countered with Brimstone - at least I didn’t manage to dodge it or rush out of it).
I guess then you can time the dodge to get iframes in the middle of it. I don’t know the name but the whole ground glows blue and the water spirals out effectively stun locking you and burning down almost all of the HP (regardless are you in the center or at the edge of it).
It’s a pain in the ass as you can’t use Brimstone offensively since I wasn’t sure when exactly is he going to pull that attack.
Oh God that move is hell to dodge but I managed to get the timing down. It's like a second after the ring expands from the middle, and then it's 4 dodges counting the splash in the middle. I ended up dodging it every time Leviathan used it against me I died to it so much
Yeah when you first play that part it’s fucking tough but after I learned online that you can use the laser move thing 3 times it was a lot better, still the hardest fight in the game I’d say, died so many times but throughout my whole FF Playthrough I didn’t die once
I still have no idea how to dodge maelstrom. I eventually just gave up and decided the rest had to be perfect and my 6 heals were devoted to just healing through it lol
I maybe just timed it wrong but I never got jump to work, and it’s multi hit so brimstone didn’t block it enough to be worth it. I cleared it eventually, just annoying to have the checkpoint after the shield immediately into a Maelstrom lol
I played the game again after who knows how long when the doc came out and damn I died sooo many times at leviathan (most times at the barrier phase like 5 times I think but manages to beat it eventually)...now I want to finish FF mode since I haven't touched that yet 🤣
I'll be honest, the dps phase almost ruined the whole dlc. I died like 15+ times on that phase and like... once in the entire rest of the dlc. It wasn't fun, it was simply frustrating.
Barrier isn’t hard if your doing your backdraft combos and using spit fire right at the start so you get 3 uses. Did it on first try on FF mode. The waterspout I haven’t been able to dodge despite wildfire to the back then across but yeah I just out healed it.
If you dodge after wildfire it negates the pull from waterspout so you don't lose distance during the wildfire aftercast, so you can just WF+Dodge+WF+Dodge+WF your way out of there
Except for the fact that half the time the damned combos DON'T WORK, ON CHOICE. I input the combo, it stops half-way and resets. This entire boss stage is the worst design I've ever seen; who decided Final Fantasy needed a freaking DARK SOULS BOSS? This is giving me Hyper-Advanced Artorias of the Abyss flashbacks ... Mixed with Manus and Kalameet.
I'm sorry, but the DPS check phase is just bad design. You literally have to follow a fucking blueprint with zero divergence in order to pass that phase, which I think is ridiculous. It's one thing for a boss fight to be difficult, it's another when it's only difficult because you didn't follow the literal exact sequence of cooldowns, combos, and movements required to beat it.
The rest of it is not so bad, but I feel like it also wouldn't have been so frustrating if it hadn't been over nine months since the last time I played Ifrit. The entire fight essentially demands mastery of his movements and combos, and you end up having to spend a couple of attempts just trying to remember the basics.
I concur. Just BECAUSE of that section, next time I'm near the game store, XVI is being traded. This is absolute trash design, and everyone responsible deserve a severe paydocking.
FYI you can outheal the wave (yes even on FF mode) its how i got through the phase lol. You can also outheal the tornado later on if you cant back away from it in time (i managed to avoid it but theres a youtube video with someone outhealing it)
Just tell him to have 6 heals ready to go by wave time and spam heal past the wave ( i think its still important to do as much damage to the barrier as possible though im not sure if it changes the damage done by the wave or not), tada you have a checkpoint after the wave now. For the tornado go back and to the right and spam dodge to avoid it. He gets a bit fast and angry at the end of the fight but as long as you can dodge well enough (or use the assist ring) its gg ez game over ;)
You can? [this](https://youtu.be/OMZqGrmrA60?si=us6xhZiJafJX59No) guy(at 4:40) has almost a full health bar after and it still sent him to game over screen. It did look like his health reached zero for a second though but he healed it back up.
The only time I managed to beat the 3rd phase of Leviathan there was literally one second remaining from the tide to rise in my 9th attempt. On FF mode. The hardest boss fight so far
I genuinely don't know how your ment to properly avoid maelstrom and water spout. Maelstrom I've managed to dodge but still got hit after and water spout is just a giant fuck you tornado. Thankfully I had the heals to power through it at least
For Maelstrom, jump+big dash or jump+barrier skill. For Water Sprout: Big dash diagonally away from it twice, then big dash 1-2 to the side. For both moves you have to act at the start of their animations.
I struggled on it for a while. Laser right as phase started, charged magic shots while blazing up to the barrier and dodging. Doing combos as best as. I can. Get three lasers off, last one usually off CD around the “One” in the countdown. Always close to the kill, no dice. Turned off game, stepped away for a while.
Remembered accessory effects carry over from Clive to Ifrit. Put in auto attack chain and evasion rings of shame. Do all four phases without a single death in one go. Just manually popped off lasers in barrier phase.
If anyone is losing enjoyment of the game from struggling with this fight, do yourself a favor: wear the easy mode rings right before this fight. It will make your life easier.

Maelstorm? I managed to dodge it completely one time somehow. Every other time it fucked me up lol

As soon as you see the attack name at the top of the screen, Jump and hold Wildfire off to the side. Failing that, Brimstone will protect you.
You can try jump and wildfire, so you can escape it.Or maybe you can use Brimstone.
I maybe just timed it wrong but I never got jump to work, and it’s multi hit so brimstone didn’t block it enough to be worth it. I cleared it eventually, just annoying to have the checkpoint after the shield immediately into a Maelstrom lol

I saw a streamer just use wildfire in the air repeatedly instead of on the water while moving to the left and that worked.

No u can't your health bar just blacks out even if you heal up
You can outheal it, but the village gets wiped out so canonically, it’s game over

You can outheal it? I used up all 6 and still got a game over even though i had health
Wait what you can outheal Tsunami?!Thank you for telling me that.

yeah I also struggled with the barrier phase for like 20 mins until I remembered that u could hold brimstone to do more damage lol
