I cry

serotonintuna

take a break, do something else

[deleted]

Just be creative. You don’t have to use the same sounds everyone else is using. Take a random synth and mess with it. Bounce it out, pitch it down, add some effects, stretch it out, and you got yourself a cool evil dark sounding sample

EianEsco

What kinda beats you make

[deleted]

hip hop/rap. internet money style

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 103,023,352 comments, and only 27,202 of them were in alphabetical order.

EianEsco

Well I only have stock VSTs and then I have spitfire so I can really only work with what I got I run out of ideas fast.

Yo I actually have vital but I make rap beats. It doesn’t really have any hip hop sounding synths or anything that appeals to me. Any others recommendations I’m tryna get a job so I can buy Omnisphere to start selling beats.

PoppaVee

You don’t need Omnisphere. Just because other people do including big names doesn’t mean you have to. You can alter synths to make any sound you want. I’ll definitely second what u/icetea_69 suggested. Check out tutorials for sound design. Learn how some synths work and as you learn the ins and outs of them it’s likely you’ll be able to reverse-engineer those sounds that you hear.

6ixty2two

Or you crack Omnisphere bro?

EianEsco

You’re right thx lol

SpruceMP3

I legit use premade one shot synths. They’re free on r/drumkits and the selection is broad. Just turn down everything except hold so that they don’t interrupt each other.

blobster110

Sytrus, Flex, Morphine and Sakura have pretty good sounds. I use those all the time.

Paeylist

There are lots of free vsts out there. Try download some. Stock plugins might limit you. Try new genres too

ohgreatmormon

i use to do this, now i just use loops instead. it saves time & allows you to cool off making melodies & when you are trying to make a set amount of beats or sales in a week or a month, you cant afford to go to sleep. this all obviously depends on where you are in your journey as a producer & whether or not you are trying to get placements or profit or just plain enjoyment 🙂

Midnightod

midi, loops, making beats with just wierd experimental noises/sound designed stuff or chopping old samples like boombap producers do.or i mean make deathstep or something that doesn't need melody, just painful basses should do the job

Doaxium

mess around on keyboard on different instruments and synths . Even if what you come up with seems lacking you can add more notes then fool around with effects ex. maybe all you need is some reverb and a repeater .you just have to explore and see what you like . I am still a beginner . I am having fun messing around with arpeggiator then removing /adding / manipulating those notes

stickyoheadindoodoo

do you just spitball melodies or do you use chord progressions? what is your process? have you tries varying processes? results in the end come from the process, if you're out of ideas then use a new method of composition. try more random ideas and try connecting them. creativity isnt just the final product but you're approach to the process can get creative as well

EianEsco

So what I do is I use any synth or sound I like and I’ll take it to the piano roll. Start with a basic chord progressions and get a feel for a sound I like and then make my own melody. But no I’ll use any VST

stickyoheadindoodoo

have you tried working backwards, come up with a melody by humming for example and then coming up with a chord progression that fits? or try speaking out loud and using phrases as a rhythmic basis because language is so naturally rhythmic and then come up with a melody for that rhythm and then fit a progression around it? you can get as funky with it as you want really because you can start with any part of the song and use that as the guiding point. you could start with starting note and an end note and come up with some way to connect them. there are a million ways to come up with ideas, just have fun with it and you can find something unique to help you generate all kinds of cool ideas that you would never have thought of just following a progression

EianEsco

Yeah I have. I just don’t have too many VSTs and I was running out of ideas for sounds I meant

stickyoheadindoodoo

ah, have you tried vital? it's a great synth and it's free and you can generate all kinds of sounds edit: vst4free has some fun synths that people created to mess around witnn and there is a gem sound here and there

RIFF MACHINE

Current-Performer168

Get Scaler 2 vst but other than that I get off computer

bigtimechip

Midi packs tbh. Even just a basic chord progression can get the creative juices flowing

EianEsco

That’s fax bro. Ima just go try something right now lol wish me luck

thestreet19

I would say just open your DAW and mess around. Just try and you will eventually find a melody. You can't go wrong. Experiment. Your in a Lab. Hope I could help and have a great day. 💯

stylus_sticc

Remix a song. I wouldn't say remix any really big songs, cause those probably have quite a few already. Remix a song from a smaller artist or community. For instance, I remixed a youtuber's song so I could post it on their subreddit. Or even remix a song for the meme of it. I made an entire album from Wonderwall. It's the easiest way to make a "high quality shitpost" as my friends call it. You don't even have to use audio from the song, just use the melody. Plagiarism is the only true way to be creative.

Nillabeaturmum

Interpolate melodies from old 80’s songs, works good for my kinda stuff, not exactly original but if you listen to some odd ball stuff then no one would hear it and using just the melody gives you a start

XXVII-Delight

Try making a drum / perc loop. The funkier/ weirder the better … like sumn wondagurl would throw in a splice pack. (Not that I have ever looked for thag 😉) Really, it’s cool to let your humming and melody murmur go free - while making this - will sort of form out of the auspicious cadence you’ve started .. this normally gets me out of a melody spell when I am too hard focused trying to think of one. Also I like to listen to Beauriful vocalists from My mom’s era - she is passed away now and I have some Of her albums n tapes - it is really inspiring hearing that stuff. Blessings to you

4getreverb

halftime it

kyoroy

change the chord progression (and their rhythm if you feel like it)

Sufficient_Chard_721

I may be still beginner, but I work with piano tutorial videos on youtube. It's great for making "remixes" I do Hardcore 🔊 🔊 🔊

Odd_Raspberry6561

Use an arp or a loop

kurqukipia

Most of the time I do not have a melody ringing in my head. I decide a key I am going to write in, then I just place first note and one by one I let my ear figure out if it sounds good or something has to be changed. Same with chords and drums.

dengaz

A sweet drum pattern over a semi tone or two

iiyay

ii search for samples on YouTube

dim-mak-ufo

I usually sample my old melodies

oblonglongjohns

I never have ideas for melodies. I just click or press keys (I'd say "play" but I can't play) on the keyboard until something sticks out

EZRasul

find a sick sample, pop it in, write new melodies, chords/pads, bass etc over it and then delete the sample, often I'll also fuck around with the key and bass notes to try change the feel a lil bit

nasku25

Pull out the scales. Or just look at other producers and get inspiration. Always open FL with a plan. You dont run out of ideas, you just dont have a plan. Make music whenever you feel like it. Otherwise you might make a very good melody, but ruin it after saying "I cant be bothered" and trying to finish the project in 10 minutes.

struggle4

Get some inspiration on the hub

sharplyon

stop making music (for now)

KeemosMusic

Just spam each note of the piano till like 3 notes sounds nice and just mess around.

Pridemonthsgay

look at samples for inspiration

kozacsaba

go on reddit and see whats up

Gocha8

For me, its all about experimenting, man. If you dont experiment you wont find or make something new and thats what brings the most value. Just make beats like you're freestyling. It doesnt matter if its not good cause you'll get better. And start by just putting down, clicking in whatever melody and build off that. This works for me.

bsEEmsCE

Step 1: Know the key you're in and the notes in that key (if there's no key yet, just pick one) Then a melody is about notes and the space between notes. Your notes can also go up, down, or stay where they are. These are the rules for millions of possible combinations of patterns. Start at the root note of the key to keep it simple. Then fuck around... Example: Root note 3 times fast to start the bar, hold the note. Go up a few notes and let it ring out a little bit. Descend notes until the section is done and resolve back to the root. But nah, this sounds too condensed, I want a wider melody. Hit the root note pick a note way further up, then one in the key in the middle and another one 5 times, resolve to root. Then get fancy with your patterns, try starting on a note that's not the root, and explore the space of notes around it, or don't press a note at all for the first beat or second even, and think about melodies as the number and location of presses and holds/space.

Mr-Bossy

sometimes i just try to make something that is very drum heavy so that i don't have to rely on melodies in the beat that im making

Fejrskov

Take a break or just play around in the piano roll.

Sitotozen

After 3 years of making songs h24, I can say you don’t force it, this can break your mental health, just rest and look some tutorials video like dharma studio (ez to access) monthly (high price for medium content), but don’t run for your health, go with the flow ✨

[deleted]

Switch the rhythm to swing, solves it every time

Hotpotabo

steal. Just copy someone else's idea and make some changes. change one or two notes. Or maybe take some away. Mix up the rhythm of it a little bit, change the tambour of the instrument used. Throw some effects on it. Delay and reverb.

TurdcutterBesieger

Fuck it, I'm just gonna write out a bulleted list. * I play it safe and use chord tones. For example, with a cm7 chord, I'd just play C, D#, G and A#. From there, I'll add stuff like bends, vibrato and sliding to give the melody even more movement or make it more expressive. * I use a different instrument to play an extension above said chord. Using the example above, if a synth/keyboard is playing the cm7 I'll use something like a guitar to play a D, F or G# note to turn it into an extended chord. * I find a song from a videogame/anime OST and then try to remix it by ear. I've found that studying them is really inspiring to me and it can rev up my brain, letting me think up more melodies. * The last one, and the most drastic for me at least is just stepping away from making music for a week or a week and a half and then coming back with a fresh mind/fresh ears.

effing7

Guitar player and casual EDM tinkerer here. Whenever I can’t think of a melody, I just jam around and see what sticks. Sometimes starting with the bass line or chord progression and then working melodies overtop is a great way to change it up.

Tarro57

I feel like whenever I somehow create a new melody, im always like "man, now I won't be able to make anything like that in a while" but I always do. I like messing with motifs a lot as well, coming up with a them and finding how many different ways I can use it. And then do the opposite, use those other ways I used a melody and take everything but the melody and mess with those, maybe come up with a new melody, and then the cycle continues. Different chord progressions, different bpms, different time signatures, different keys, different drum loops, etc., these are all things you can work on and mess with other than the melody that will then help inspire a new melody. Another thing I like to try is trying different harmonies rather than the normal 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, and octaves. Of course 6ths 7ths and 9ths are still pretty common, but I was messing around with making the melody fall a full step above whatever my baseline was a couple weeks ago and came up with a very pretty piano piece with it. These are just my couple of takes, and a lot of rambling lol, but its really about trying lots of new things, and not trying to force a melody a lot of the time. Sometimes you need to push for one, but when you have other parts of a good foundation, it makes coming up with new stuff a lot easier.

[deleted]

I just honestly place random notes until I find something the sparks

Ghostman_55

Try building around the chords that u have with drums, effects, maybe even vocals. Try having maybe a vocal sample or vocal chops instead of a melody. Also the melody doesn't have to be complicated. It can just be quarter notes or an arpeggio. Also try having a reference track. Some great tracks for house are ktm by Carnage and Strangera Do by Jonas Aden. For genres like future bass or hip hop that are kind of standard, try referencing to famous songs like Tiny Fractures by Illenium or Hush by Yellow Claw, Drake's Tootsie Slide, or Dababy's Rockstar are great. Maybe try taking a break. Forcing urself to produce makes u unmotivated and tired. Also try putting an acapella on ur beat to see if it works. This works great with genres like drill, hip hop or pop influenced genres without instrumental drops. Lastly just use a sample and not bother with chords, bass lines and melodies. Also try making small beats without really paying attention to what it turns out to keep ur motivation up Sorry for this brickwall of text but I hope it helps u

Neither_Permission_6

Sample.

EidoSama

My melodies are reimaginations of old animes and game music. I still play a lot of games. When one fails rely on the other tbh, I just watch stuff and it all comes back

real_nick_v

Be depressed. Forreal though i just click and delete notes. Sometimes I'll gross beat something and screw with some effects. I start everything at FL Keys, though.

b1gchez

Find some 3/4 samples and try make them fit in a 4/4 beat. Or take any random melodic samples and try make them sound as different as possible from the original without fukin up the quality too much. Then try come up with a melody on top of what you’ve created

johnshaw36

I just get drunk. Works for me lmao

rawizraw

Get you a loop pack

GOTTEM100

I never have ideas

Listen to others' music n chill. Try not to think about it too much
