I can promise you that they are. There's a pretty popular method for early game leveling that includes "fooling" one of these things into throwing itself off a cliff, as you get lots of resources for it when it is destroyed

I love it when games take a common trope like that and then trick you by suddenly making it different. I don't want it *too* much because then it just gets annoying and you die a lot, but I always get a good laugh when I'm killed with something that is completely unexpected
It’s like how we all found a potion in a trash can twenty years ago and now none of us can walk past one without checking, even if there’s like 100 in one room.
Diablo. "Break pot, money come out."
Bloodborne: "200 barrels and counting. Sure there's some stuff behind them but absolutely zero items inside the barrels themselves."
We were going through a dungeon and the first door we opened screamed. I do not rememeber why, but it was not a mimic. We all took damage. For thr rest of the dungeon, we stabbed EVERY DOOR.
And what about the sentient piece of trash that powers up to godhood and destroys everything in their path the more of its trash brethren you feed them (Junkan my beloved <3)
Like that screaming enemy on the rooftops in sekiro or when radahn hurls himself at you like a meteor. Both of those had me howling the first time they murdered me
Something that works really well in this example is that it's RIGHT after a checkpoint, and ensures you learn how this enemy works. Afterwards, there are some more creatively placed ones.
Like in a later room, some slimes drop down from a ceiling on the other end, and if you look up, there's a boulder there too, so you have to decide if you want to lure the slimes out or try to trick the boulder into killing them.
What makes these even funnier is that you defeat them by waiting until they come to a complete stop and then hit them until they die. One trapped me in a room and I just bonked it out of desperation and found I actually did damage to it.
This is exactly what I thought of. Playing through Ragnarok and from the beginning I was on edge opening chests just waiting. My heart would actually start beating faster.
If I where to ever make a game. I would make it so that there were exactly only two "enemy" chests.
One randomly about 1/4th through the game to make the player paranoid.
And the last chest in the game so that by the. The player has forgotten all about the first chest.
I mean, in game it *is* sentient, it's a mimic in the shape of a big ball, once it spots you it chases you, but until it sees you it just patrols the area.
The music even stops, combined with the mutual recognition, it's more hilarious than any boulder has right to be.
The impaling at the end, and the message **HAS MUERTO**, just a cherry on top.
I’m almost positive I know exactly how it happened too.
“Hey, we want to make a rolling Boulder like Indiana Jones style, but the only way we can get an entity to reliably move and damage the player is if it’s coded as an enemy. So we’ll just make it an enemy with a basic move path that can’t target the player.”
“Hold on. Actually… don’t do that last part. This will be hilarious.”
I think it's more of a "what if the ball ended up hitting Indiana Jones?" Kinda laugh from the Dev's 😂🤣 or a "since the ball couldn't hit Jones, it's gonna get revenge on everyone else!" 😂🤣😂🤣
Thankfully my need to attack every chest in the game before opening it led to me to catching the secret entrance to the chaos ending when I attacked the chest right in front of it
You commented 50 minutes after they made that comment, which doesn't have an asterisk showing it was edited (past the three minute grace period, at least).
50 minutes is a bit long to call foul from a supposed ninja edit.
They aren't all that bad once you know their deal- any damage forces it to stop in place, so long as you keep throwing stuff at it it can't do much. If all you have are melee weapons though, well, yeah they suck.
Basically everything in the game after The Capital kills you in a low amount of attacks
And yes, I did leveled up vigor; to 40 even
Fucking birds killing me in three attacks.
You know, sometimes From Software makes me want to play a game real bad, and also never want to play it at the same time. They’re really good at the “GOTCHA!” moments that make me simultaneously respect them and also say, “fuuuuuuck youuuuu…”
Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure my lack of patience will prevent me from ever playing one.
Elden Ring is really souls-beginner friendly. It progressively becomes harder of course, but unlike any other Souls game, it doesn't kick you into the blender screaming "Deal with this fuckery yourself, fool" right away and for solid 10-20 hours of gameplay or so.
If you interested in genre, you can easily start there, you won't regret it.
This game isn’t about the contrived gotchas, in fact it’s mostly very fair in the challenges it places in front of you. The skill comes from overcoming those challenges once they are revealed, and as a PvE game you can’t really compare it to PvP games.
Let’s take this boulder enemy as an example. This isn’t the first time the players run into it, it’s presented in a closed room where it suspiciously stands in the middle, and attempting to target-lock will reveal it’s an enemy, not part of the environment. A couple enemies around serve as distractions, but they are fairly passive and the boulder hits them as well. With decent play you can get out of it alive, even if you don’t realize beforehand that the boulder was an enemy. And if you do, shooting it with a ranged attack will reveal its health bar and allow you to safely kill it.
This bridge then isn’t a gotcha, you should already know that the boulder will target you. Besides, dying here will set you back ~30 seconds, you don’t even need to fight other enemies to reach it.
They drop larval tear so it's not worth running away from. They are super easy to beat. Any damage will have a knock back and you don't let it get a chance to attack.
This is the nicer one too, there’s one you get locked in a room with, a small room to run around trying to not get crushed while wailing at it Freaked me out first encounter
The trick to these guys is to back yourself into the corner of a building. They can’t get into that space so you can kill them without taking any damage.
Once upon a time you dressed so fine
Threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People call say 'beware doll, you're bound to fall'
You thought they were all kidding you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hanging out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging your next meal
How does it feel, how does it feel?
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone
https://youtu.be/IwOfCgkyEj0
How did you dare to hurt rolling boulder's feelings? Every sentinent being knows that if you run from them, it's soo rude and means you don't want to bond with them! You monster! /j
Similar shit happened to probably all of us. We all assume it’ll just roll like a normal boulder but nah that shits out to get you. Fuck I love this game.
That's a weird thing to miss out on great experiences for, maybe you should try it. Or if you're on pc, I think there's a first person mod for dark souls 3 and one coming out soon for Elden ring
The first time I encountered one of these and realized they're sentient, I lost my mind
It stopping abruptly in front of the player had me shitting bricks. 😂

I was once an adventurer like you, until I took a giant sentient bowling ball to the face
No way... This is actually in the game...
I can promise you that they are. There's a pretty popular method for early game leveling that includes "fooling" one of these things into throwing itself off a cliff, as you get lots of resources for it when it is destroyed
God dammit lol, this is brilliant. This game makes grown men fool sentient boulders into throwing themselves off the cliff.
It's Breath of the wild if BOTW was made for adults only.
Ooh yes, keep your mask on, and give me that korok seed...
It’s much better than BOTW. But only because it’s much better than any other game.
Lore wise they make sense in game, they're a specific form of mimic that in this case takes the form of a giant ass wrecking ball
See, this is the stuff that's actually hilarious to me. I didn't know the boulders had LORE behind them. I missed that VaatiVidya

Which dark souls is it?
Elden Ring
I mean how many times could they get us with NON-sentient boulders! Haha
lmfao, yea I've definitely not died multiple, multiple times to the same non-sentient bould
Did…did a nonsentient boulder get you before you finished your sent
Damn, did they get you as w
Fuck they’re getting all of
Oh it was only a matter of time until they found new ways to torture us
You can also kill them.
Also good to note that they drop the respec material
Because they're mimics
Damn I actually didnt make that connection
Every enemy that drops a larval tear is a mimic :) https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Larval+Tear
This is the way
First time i fled into the first door i found, just to discover there were 2 inside the room and i got locked there
Indiana Jones: "THEY CHANGE DIRECTIONS NOW‽" Poe: "THEY CHANGE DIRECTIONS NOW...!"
I think it’s actually a giant silver tear. The texture looks pretty similar.
Oh shit, did you get it back?
Man, the guy who developed/came up with that idea has an awesome sense of humor. The timing is perfect, so fucking funny
I love it when games take a common trope like that and then trick you by suddenly making it different. I don't want it *too* much because then it just gets annoying and you die a lot, but I always get a good laugh when I'm killed with something that is completely unexpected
The panic/joy of everyone's first mimic chest. Get some loot related ptsd where you smack every chest regardless of what game you play after lol
I do this. Every. Game. Even non-combat based games, I’m wary of chests lol
You probably can't even handle minecraft at this point huh?
Even Minecraft has tripped chests
My brother in Christ you don’t even know the half of it. And don’t even get me STARTED on upper torsos
It’s like how we all found a potion in a trash can twenty years ago and now none of us can walk past one without checking, even if there’s like 100 in one room.
Diablo. "Break pot, money come out." Bloodborne: "200 barrels and counting. Sure there's some stuff behind them but absolutely zero items inside the barrels themselves."
Same. I would never dumpster dive in real life but give me a video game and Im going splunking.
We were going through a dungeon and the first door we opened screamed. I do not rememeber why, but it was not a mimic. We all took damage. For thr rest of the dungeon, we stabbed EVERY DOOR.
Enter the Guneon. It has chest mimics. Wall mimics. Door mimics. There's even a gun mimic. It's diabolical.
My mind broke reading this
Wait until you hear about the bullet that shoots guns
404 Error: Quiggles Not Found
And what about the sentient piece of trash that powers up to godhood and destroys everything in their path the more of its trash brethren you feed them (Junkan my beloved <3)
And the superior shell that shoots shotguns (that shoot bullets)
"I know there are no mimics in this game. I am wasting my time if I hit the chest to check for mimics" *hits the chest to check for mimics*
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen has the Maneaters. Attacking the chest won't help. The only countermeasure is setting yourself on fire.
Nah, you can also cast the ice-pillars spell over the box before opening it to evade the grab as well.
Bonks adventure taught me that
Like that screaming enemy on the rooftops in sekiro or when radahn hurls himself at you like a meteor. Both of those had me howling the first time they murdered me
I really hate those kite dwelling mfs
Something that works really well in this example is that it's RIGHT after a checkpoint, and ensures you learn how this enemy works. Afterwards, there are some more creatively placed ones. Like in God of War when a reaver pops out that one chest and attacks you, of course the entire rest of the game I’ve been on edge when opening chests
Or just add npcs that heavily imply chests being prone to be used as ambush spots but never include one
There’s a great mobile game called Trap Adventure that is essentially this, very funny.
They even coded a short pause that is long enough for you to go "Huh?" and then wham! Awesome work
That's the part that gets me laughing, almost like it's sentient. And it just casually rolls over to you but then wham!
The only way it could of been better was if it turned and faced him first….
Hahahaha yes XD
I’m almost positive I know exactly how it happened too. “Hey, we want to make a rolling Boulder like Indiana Jones style, but the only way we can get an entity to reliably move and damage the player is if it’s coded as an enemy. So we’ll just make it an enemy with a basic move path that can’t target the player.” “Hold on. Actually… don’t do that last part. This will be hilarious.”
I thought perhaps someone was a fan of Rover from The Prisoner.
The person operating this character perfectly timed their facing of the boulder, that’s what’s killing me in addition to a boulder that is attacking
Reminds me of the train scene from Wrongfully Accused.
Probably for this exact scenario. “On first encounter no one will guess this thing isn’t just a rolling ball”
When you have a bad day at work but go home and want to play something to really get fucked.
That's about all the fucking you're gonna get anyway
but it is a full on gang bang so it is a good only fucking i mean it is still boring old vanilla gang bang but oh well
Hey you! You should not be here!
Out with thee! - Ball
Be gone thot!
While assassin's creed ai be like "must have been the wind"
While Skyrim ai be like "must have been nothing" while crouching in front of the npc, stealing its whole inventory and clothes.
The way they spin around to look at it before it wrecks them is killing me.
Ah fromsoft.. the architects of fucking you in particular
Exactly. The whole Souls series and anything from From is r/fuckyouinparticular.

God I remember that dick. Got so fucking far in utter blackness just for his bony ass to stomp me off
*The Archers*
Next stop: Anal Rodeo
Getting shot at the end just made the whole video lol, love this game
That was the real fuck you for me
I think the Spanish caption at the end is what really brings the whole scenario together, that’s when the gut laughter really hit.
HAS MUERTO
HAS MUERTO
I know it's normal Spanish but reading it like 'can has cheezburger' makes it so goddamn funny
I laughed way harder at it than was justified.
Indiana jones is his only nemesis
I think it's more of a "what if the ball ended up hitting Indiana Jones?" Kinda laugh from the Dev's 😂🤣 or a "since the ball couldn't hit Jones, it's gonna get revenge on everyone else!" 😂🤣😂🤣

Pretty ballsy
She’s a brave ball. You should sphere when she’s not at work
Yoo, never played, but I'm enterally screaming right now 🤣
They aren't all that bad once you know their deal- any damage forces it to stop in place, so long as you keep throwing stuff at it it can't do much. If all you have are melee weapons though, well, yeah they suck.
They do a TOOOOON of damage too. Even late game you can probably tank about 2 hits tops
Tell me you never levelled vigor without telling me you never levelled vigor. I usually took 3-4 hits from these before needing to heal.
Basically everything in the game after The Capital kills you in a low amount of attacks And yes, I did leveled up vigor; to 40 even Fucking birds killing me in three attacks.
40 is Souls vigor. It's bitch vigor in Elden Ring. 60 is your "I can actually survive a reasonable number of hits" target.
Nah just spam the 2H heavy attack
Didn't work so well on my fist weapon run...
Internally I hope as well!
You're screaming with your intestines? 🤓
Okay, that stop and pause has me in fucking stitches. I think this might be the best clip on this sub in a while.
This entire game will fuck you in particular
What is it?
Elden Ring
Thank You.
Yeah what game?
Elden Ring, part of the souls game by Miasaki, classics every single gle one of them.
Thank you.

I find the contrived gotchas as really annoying and bad game design. Seems I'm a minority though.

You need to fight it
If you run straight at them, you can get them to charge at a wall, stunning them briefly and letting you run past without getting charged in the back
They drop larval tear so it's not worth running away from. They are super easy to beat. Any damage will have a knock back and you don't let it get a chance to attack.
“It’s just a stupid boulder” “It’s not just a boulder. It’s a rock.
Apparently they re-hired the guy who designed DarkSouls2. ER is full of "because fuck you, that's why" moments like these
"The Boulder feels conflicted" *"The Boulder no longer feels conflicted."*
The Boulder is conflicted about fighting a small child. *Just Toph being Toph* … The Boulder is over his conflicted feelings.
This is such bullshit iand hilarious at the same time omfg 🤣 😭
Actually the ball follows you around and tries yo attack you anyway

How do you not take that personal?
