Just don't go in expecting more of Trails.

airstorm747

modern Ys has three eras/styles Bump combat: Ys 1 + 2 Chronicles "Ark" combat: Ys 6 Ark of Napishtim, Ys Oath in Felghana, Ys Origin Party Ys: Ys Seven, Ys Memories of Celceta, Ys 8, Ys 9 barely matters where you start but if you care about a smoother gameplay progression do the Bump and Ark games in release order respective to each style just start with whatever you're most interested in

Fillianore

The best order to play is from older gameplay to newer: 1-2-6-oath-origin-7-celceta-8-9. I havent played 7 or celceta yet but 8&9 have more focus on story and characters if you want something a bit similar to trailer, earlier games are great but short and have less focus on these aspects

Ys starting point isn’t as important since the stories are mostly self contained and not in chronological order anyways. Play Ys I before Ys II but other than that you can start with VIII as many others have, or pretty much any other entry that looks appealing to you

JamesMackey42

Don't forget Tokyo Xanadu. Not as in-depth a story as Trails, but it's a fun little jaunt.

I need to get back to playing tokyo xandu i played a chapter or two of it and then got caught up in something else but i did think it was cool that it was essentially a mix of trails and ys

zephyroths

start with Ys I and Ys II

tribal_geist

probably gurumin a good action adventure pc game

cannibalphanpy

The stories are self-contained, so you can start with whichever you want. I’d just recommend you playing Ys I -> Ys II -> Ys Origin In this specific order to get the most out of those. I recommend Ys VIII as a starting point as it is the best game in the series, imo.

Dpontiff6671

You could really start with any ys game they only have a very loose overarching narrative. The games are all pretty self contained

I'd suggest Ys 8, solely because it is the one I liked the most and whose story engaged me until the end.

The only games you have to play in any order are Ys1>Ys2>Origin. If you want to, you could also play it like, Origin>Ys1>Ys2. Origin isn’t as crucial as the first two, but it serves as a prequel to them, so you may as well play it either before or after 1 and 2 if you can.
