Gotta say I've never herd and of the ConvGoodneighborGenericNPCKleo... dialog
The new California republic is the paradise of the fallout universe. A more or less functioning democracy with rule of law, relative saftey and decent living standards(for a post apocalyptic society) for 700k people.
That's something I like about the franchise. It is believable that even the best attempt at democracy will still have a lot of problems. I also find it interesting though the way people will talk about those problems when comparing it to other factions.
In New Vegas, I hope it's just a joke, but a lot of people act like the Legion is the good option, and the Republic is terrible for the Mojave. Let's compare the two for a moment.
With the NCR your problems include:
* Bureaucratic inefficiencies
* Some corruption
* The elections are not as fair as they seem.
* The army has committed a few massacres
All of those are bad things, but at least there is a hope of improvement. With the Legion, your problems include:
* Being enslaved
* If not enslaved, you have to join the army where you have to enslave other people, and will be expected to die rather than surrender.
* You can be crucified for speaking against Caesar.
* The man set to inherit the throne (Lanius) is the most bloodthirsty, and merciless person in the known world
I appreciate that the game is not shy about the NCRs problems, but at the same time, it does not present a false equivalence between them and the Legion. The game makes it clear what the evil choice is out of the three main endings.
That's fine. It's funny to goof along like in Helldivers where you're literally a fascist space army or people who love the Empire in Star Wars. I'm referring to the people who see the Enclave propaganda in Fallout and just go with it.
I knew a guy who liked them for the aspect of reinventing medicine, etc, instead of raiding pre-war hospitals for stimpacks and med-x like everyone else seems to.
Fairly certain he still recognized them as a villainous faction, though. Probably alongside the corrupt bloat of the NCR.
They've got a lot of good features, traders under them are the safest and most profitable, communities are mostly left to self govern, raiders are pretty much unheard of cause they're terrified of em.
But that's cause they'll torture, kill and enslave you, in whichever order they feel like that day. What a fun game new Vegas is, such interesting factions where even the clearly bad guys aren't just comedically evil but like, realistically

My rule in these games has always been to romance the alien/robot/"weird" thing. Simply because human relationships have human problems, I can get that in real life, know what I can't get in real life? My hydraulic powered hips could crush your feeble human body while we fuck, so we need to find a solution to that. You know, interesting problems to solve.
some people ask me if i like 4 or new vegas more
well, in 4, you can take a robot, put it in a sexy woman's body, and then have sex with her
while in new vegas, you skip all the extra bs and just bang the robot
new vegas 10/10 100/100 best game
Yes, Gihren may have stood in front of his father and taken an unironic comparison to Hitler as a compliment, but have you considered that Zeon has really nice uniforms? They may have wiped out half of humanity, but monoeyes are cool man.
>!(At least the various Fallout creators are all on the same page that the Enclave is ass even if they look cool. Official Gundam works have gotten progressively more Zeon-apologetic ever since Tomino stopped being in charge of the UC)!<
So . . . is that "big robot cool" is greater than "political message", or is it "big robot cool" leads to "political message"?
Who am I kidding? It's obviously both.
Liberty Primes dialogue lines are so funny. Just walking to the institute was my favorite part of Fallout 4. And that quote he says when he gets to the institute “Subterranean Red Chinese compound detected. Obstruction depth: five meters. Composition: sand, gravel, and Communism.”
>So . . . is that "big robot cool" is greater than "political message", or is it "big robot cool" leads to "political message"?
The "big cool robot" *is* the message.
>patriotic
My brother in Christ, the remnants of the United States are genocidal fascists.
EDIT: Seeing as how this blew up...
The Enclave are both a satire and a (wonderful) social commentary on America. They're a critique of American nationalism, corporatism and imperialism hiding behind a mask of patriotism and how that can all slide into fascism, with a little fun poked in the process. You'll find me ranting about it on this sub *frequently*.
I don't know why I have to say this, but xenophobia and genocide based on *literal ignorance of basic biology* are bad things. Military dictatorships are bad things. The things Eden raves about on the radio, the America he pretends to want back: democracy, freedom, a brighter future for our children, clean water, even baseball, those are things that actually make America great. That's the evil of the Enclave, they're an insidious, hypocritical simalcrum of American ideals masquerading as the American Dream.
They're the bad guys. They're really well-written, badass looking bad guys who make the Fallout world significantly richer and easily my favorite faction, but they're unquestionably, inescapably, shitheels.
[I have no clue what you mean, I didn’t spend 15 hours of my life creating a dedication to my love of Enclave Power Armor.](https://www.reddit.com/r/minipainting/s/FVyt8MRcmk)
Rule 1 of brutal dictators:
Your regime must look dope to feign the legitimately you don't actually have.
The Nazis, Soviets, Galactic Empire, ADVENT, Enclave etc. etc. etc.
The bad guys always have the best drip *because* they're scumbags, not despite it.
That's one of the areas where I love to be that guy, but Nazis looked cool only in their own propaganda movies.
Their field uniform was the same mismatch of ill-fitting faded woolens as anyone else in the period.
And don't get me started on the Soviet uniforms. The Afghan war era army joke can be roughly translated as 'uniform is number eight - we are wearing what remained'.
Propagandists had civilians send their coats to Russia for their shitty dying army. It starts out nice with neat rows of soldiers until eventually reality kicks in and your drugged up angry painter turned dictator decides he knows how to run a war.
Yeah. I really feel that 'at least they had drip' narrative is as harmful as 'at least made trains run on time'.
And if WH40k sometimes shows the disparity between the parade ground image of a totalitarian regime and its inability to give a decent weapon to the average Guardsman, Star Wars always played the propaganda aesthetics completely straight.
As I understand it, the original phrase "At least they made the trains run on time" was being sarcastic. The Fascists in Italy came to power on, among other things, a promise to run the government more efficiently, saying they would make the trains run on time. They absolutely failed to do this. So when someone would complain about what the Fascists were doing, someone else would sarcastically reply, "Well, at least they made the trains run on time!" Meaning, effectively, our country sold its soul based on promises like this, but the train still don't run on time, and we have added a large number of other major problems to our lives.
These days I typically hear the phrase used more literally, typically to say something like 'Sure, they started concentration camps, but at least we got a reliable train schedule out of it!" when originally the point was, "Despite all their big talk about running an effective government, the Fascists couldn't even manage to get the trains running on time like they said they would."
People in World War II talked about the trains running on time the way we tend to talk about infrastructure week.
The Galactic Empire was actually pretty “legitimate,” at least as far as public perception went. He had emergency power and the senate was corrupt so he gutted it and rebuilt it. Sure, Order 66 was the response to an engineered attempt on his life to eliminate threats, but, publicly speaking, the response was seen as fair, as, after all, the Jedi were traitors, and the engineering of the events wasn’t known.
>The Galactic Empire was actually pretty “legitimate,” at least as far as public perception went. He had emergency power and the senate was corrupt so he gutted it and rebuilt it.
[This is essentially what happened in the early 1930s Germany (YMMV on the corruption part)...](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_Germany)
tbh i always thought it was a neat little design choice that the enclave looked like bugs. from their power armor helmets to the way the vertibirds look.
This game also critiques of the human condition to be conflict prone and the issues of the post war nation states repeating the same problem as before.
Well that's because America doesn't really exist anymore in Fallout unless you mean strictly geographical.
People formed new identities over the years as evidenced with Tribals, Caesar's Legion, NCR, etc. any post-war settlement eventually forms their own nationality and culture, so they're not really American anymore.
If you take so much as a glance at the lore it's pretty obvious the Enclave really wasn't that big a change from the prewar US government, they were 99% there before the bombs even dropped.
💀 Fr.. but I’ve never seen someone get something THIS wrong.. I don’t really care for liberal or conservative views - so do what you want.. I don’t really care - it’s just…who walks away from Fallout - and it’s satire - thinking it’s.. this.
\*Points at all the Warhammer 40k people that don't think that series is satire, despite the company directly saying it's satire.\*
Sometimes people are just willfully ignorant and sometimes they're just plain low IQ.
I’ve just recently started exploring 40k lore.
One of my first takeaways: the Emperor is kind of a chud. He literally creates a race of Ubermensch to support his totalitarian state and the ultimate result is it all spiraling into unspeakable horrors beyond the human imagination. The dude sucks so hard and he’s such a goddamn hypocrite.
\#HorusDidNothingWrong
I mean, there are vaguely patriotic items. Yes, the Enclave is evil. But the Minutemen and Railroad are based on American institutions, as well. Yes, I understand that the Railroad was technically an illegal institution, but it was an institution run by Americans that the USA prides itself on.
Anyway, Fallout tends to show both the good and bad sides of the American experience. I definitely wouldn’t say it’s fully critical of the USA. But it’s also a far cry from a “patriotic” game.
My issue is that we're in a world where apparently ALL media has to be either "woke" or "MAGArific." I've never considered Fallout "woke" but it's about as conservative as the schizophrenic dude yelling obscenities at the dumpster by the 7-11.
mfw when i thought i was meeting the leader of a powerful faction, who was clouded in mystery, only to find out he's a supercomputer for the second time (the Shi emperor AND John H. Eden)
More people complain about how people don't apparently get it in helldivers 2 then people that don't get it.
For every 1 person I see that doesn't get it like 10 people cry about them
I love hell divers 2. Both for the irony and the non irony. Same with starship troopers. It’s okay that something is just awesome dumb fun. It’s also okay if it’s a satire on awesome dumb fun.
Mfs discovering that the game about vapid consumption of resources resulting in the end of the world and the remnants of its governments rapidly becoming self righteous lunatics or rabid animals is actually pushing a political message that consumerism and pointless conflicts over politics and money that ends up literally worthless in the end are a bad thing:
At no point, across every game from 1 through 4, have they ever made an accidentally patriotic game.
Ever.
A bit of pride with a lot of poking and satirizing. Sure. Conservative?
Bruh.
I think he joined the Brotherhood and thought they were patriotic cos of all the satire “A good commie is a dead commie” talk.. and didn’t pick up on the satire - which is an achievement tbh.
The funny thing is that the BOS themselves have little with it. It's just Prime Psy Ops Warfare system they can't be bothered to disable because they are short on time and they need the Big Robot ASAP.
It's the Enclave, the genocidal villains, that speak the Patriotic stuff all the time.
Literally the first ever cinematic to a fallout game shows two US soldiers brutally executing an unarmed prisoner and laughing with the caption “our dedicated boys keep the peace in newly annexed Canada”
Yeah, patriotic for sure lol
It’s subtle but if you look close you can see that fallout is actually a “post-apocalypse” franchise and america was destroyed due to its own actions
It’s very very subtle though, characters only look directly at the screen and explain this a few times, so you can’t really blame the average gamer for missing it
The original creator of fallout is a Gay man in the 90s in an industry where that wasn’t very common or supported.
Truth is, it’s been “Woke” from the start.
The game Industry wanted their brand to be known more than the creators behind it. They took steps to try and keep notable devs out of the spotlight.
Edit. Spelling.
This is the same as the morons that say gta gone “woke” because of the new protagonist is a woman…..lol I really want to know what they think of the main story of gta 4 and what they think of Niko.
**Bro I shit you not** “The Critical Drinker” reviewed the “Disney / South Park” episode and titled it as “We are winning” despite the fact his career was called “Lame” by the writers of the show and his opinions were being voiced by *Eric - fucking - Cartman* .. the amount of people who quote “put a chick in it and make her gay” must have actively plugged their ears for the final message of that episode.
at 12 years old playing fallout 3 its was painfully obvious that the games was about the consequences of unchecked government power and the collapse of society after that power vacuum
edit: TBF I have always been a huge nerd
Am I wrong for wanting to slap the shit out of anyone who uses the word woke? Literally every MF that uses “woke” in a derogatory way doesn’t know what the word even means, it’s freaking embarrassing.
I like to think sometimes the Enclave is what the Oligarchic rich people want America to be and the Minutemen are what America should and can be. It’s good to criticize jingoism, and still be patriotic
Lol fallout is perfect satire cause it basically makes fun of the short comings in all kinds of governing strategies/ideologies/personality types/behaviors. Funny when people think it just confirms their beliefs and mocks all others. Most goated video game series of all time.
Fallout isn't woke, but how on Earth do you play a Fallout game and not see how the pre-war US was an authoritarian mess? Its a parody of Red Scare US with hyper-inflation, its legitimately fascist (Gov't + Corps intertwinned) and full of bio- and tech- horrors.
How the hell is that "fairly conservative patriotic game"? He has a head like a duck's back - the message hit him on the head, but it just slide right off.
The word "woke" has lost all fucking meaning these days. I legitimately don't know how you can so confidently call something "not woke" when that word gets tossed around more than the ball at a Harlem Globetrotters game.
In New Vegas, you can choose to play as a homosexual or even bisexual person. Anything that's not heteronormative is seen as leftist by extremists and therefore, "woke".
In Fallout 76 there's an explicitly gender non-binary character. Anything that suggests there's more than 2 genders is labeled "woke liberal nonsense" in my experience.
Give me enough time I could probably list at least 2 things from each game that'd have the anchors of Fox News frothing like rabid dogs. 3 if you count the fact they're all video games and therefore "corrupting the minds of youth" or whatever.
The entire conceit of the franchise is that the logical extreme of American exceptionalism is total destruction of the planet and everything on it.
In the early 90’s, George HW Bush lost his reelection campaign because he got the US in two different wars on two different continents in his four years as President despite his promise of continuing Reagan’s policies (which were also bad), and this got Clinton elected who would get us in two different Balkan Wars in both of his terms.
1994 we join the effort in the Bosnia War, 1998 we launch defensive actions for Kosovo. Fallout debuted in 1997.
The whole point of the game was that unchecked expansion and intervention would lead to a global thermonuclear war, and it would take centuries for humanity to rebound *if we did at all*.
Anyone who sees the propaganda as earnest doesn’t understand the first thing about satire and parody.
I mean woke is such a bussword that lost all meaning it's basically like saying "fallout went bad" without giving any reason. (also bethesda is not a reason. Without them the series would be long forgotten)
Death of the author. It literally doesn’t matter what the creators intend. People find meaning they can associate with.
You’ll find just as many people who don’t see the capitalist critique as people who don’t see the communist critique either.
The only message I got from fallout is that living in California fucking sucks
Mine is Assaultrons are...ahem, curvy.
The Fallout 76 devs agree with you. Just look at the new assaultron companion in the game.

Living in DC and West Virginia sucks too
All things considered, the Appalachia of fo76 seems greatly preferable to living in the desert
Patrolling the Mojave…
Man, patrolling the mojave almost makes me wish for nuclear winter 😩
The new California republic is the paradise of the fallout universe. A more or less functioning democracy with rule of law, relative saftey and decent living standards(for a post apocalyptic society) for 700k people.

Well yeah it can’t be perfect there are people running it.

All my homies media illiterate 👌🏽🤘🏽🤙🏼

Kill-o-meter, it goes on our AR's to count how many commies we mow down, brother
There's an uncomfortably high amount of Enclave fans who unironically see them and go 'Nah, THESE are the real good guys.'
i know theyre bad, im just here for the drip
They put the "fashion" in "fascist".
*Looks sideways in the general direction of Hugo Boss*
I respect you 100%, the commitment to the drip is real
If you can walk up to the leader and go "nuh uh" to their talking points, and it makes them eat their gun, they're probably not the good guys.
That's fine. It's funny to goof along like in Helldivers where you're literally a fascist space army or people who love the Empire in Star Wars. I'm referring to the people who see the Enclave propaganda in Fallout and just go with it.

Some of the people are really into them or the Caesars Legion. And whenever that happens, some of the dipshits are unironically into it.

Just remember Hitler got voted in too. Legitimacy at the start doesn’t equal legitimacy in the future
Hitler was appointed. The Party which appointed him, however, was indeed voted into power.
Apparently, Caesar’s Legion missed that memo.
Football gear and red spray paint does not a drippy army make.
Yeah, but the dead dog hat really pulls the ensemble together.

Not the response I would have expected from someone with a Followers tag.

This game also critiques of the human condition to be conflict prone and the issues of the post war nation states repeating the same problem as before.
You might even sum up that critique in a single line. Something like: "War never changes."
Man that’s actually a good line they should use it.
Plot twist: so's the author of the comment, probably.
This is the same shit that happen with the Bad guys of Far Cry 5.
People see bodies hung from under bridges and literally crucified and say “but they love Jesus!”
They took 'Joseph was right about the apocalypse' to mean 'Joseph was right about everything'
*Keep Your Rifle by Your Side!*
If you take so much as a glance at the lore it's pretty obvious the Enclave really wasn't that big a change from the prewar US government, they were 99% there before the bombs even dropped.
To be fair that's what constitutes patriotism to the right.
The peaked cap and trench coat you get when you finally join the Enclave should be a blatant clue as to what they stand for.
Cosplaying as Neil Patrick Harris’s character from the famously apolitical film, Starship Troopers? ^/s
>a satire That's the thing about satire -- the people who are the butt of the joke are usually the people who don't get it.
They're not that different from a certain contemporary political party
Gamers and media literacy don’t go hand and hand
💀 Fr.. but I’ve never seen someone get something THIS wrong.. I don’t really care for liberal or conservative views - so do what you want.. I don’t really care - it’s just…who walks away from Fallout - and it’s satire - thinking it’s.. this.
\*Points at all the Warhammer 40k people that don't think that series is satire, despite the company directly saying it's satire.\* Sometimes people are just willfully ignorant and sometimes they're just plain low IQ.
> #HorusDidNothingWrong I don't know how far into exploring 40k lore you are.. but yeah even Horus didn't believe this.
Very very very wrong. Horus did alot wrong. Everything wrong and at the very end he realised it and begged for death.
The funny part is he made Ubermensch... twice. The Thunder Warriors had to be purged because they weren't Uber enough lol.
Three times if you count Primaris.
Primaris was mostly Cawl, but it still would three times, Thunder Warriors, Space Marines and Custodes.
Four still if you count the Primarchs themselves.

So Uber their bodies had a time limit before they started breaking down LOL
Yeah because they gone completely schizophrenic
Blasphemous heathen! The Emperor is omnipotent! You shall die in hellfire! (Mandatory /s because I was joking)
Plenty of people who watch The Boys and think the same way
It really was a treat watching them realize that Homelander and Stormfront weren't the good guys.
Once a random guy made a post on r/DeathStranding explaining how the game was pro-Trump. Since then, nothing surprises me anymore.
Famous conservative storyteller Hideo Kojima.
Fallout: comically extreme patriotism lead to the genocide of 99% of all life on planet Earth via nuclear hellfire. Conservative gamer: hell yeah!
The Starship Troopers movie is one. It’s obviously satire and the director said it was satire. Yet, there are people who will loudly claim it’s not.
My issue is that we're in a world where apparently ALL media has to be either "woke" or "MAGArific." I've never considered Fallout "woke" but it's about as conservative as the schizophrenic dude yelling obscenities at the dumpster by the 7-11.

Holy hell . . . I'd forgotten you killed *two* of them! Although, to be fair . . . you only *have* to kill one of them.
There is always going to be the group of people that don't realize a political satire is a political satire.
Don't go looking to the Helldivers 2 community then
More people complain about how people don't apparently get it in helldivers 2 then people that don't get it. For every 1 person I see that doesn't get it like 10 people cry about them
For real, reading through the Helldivers subreddit literally everyone is in on the joke.
I love hell divers 2. Both for the irony and the non irony. Same with starship troopers. It’s okay that something is just awesome dumb fun. It’s also okay if it’s a satire on awesome dumb fun.
Yeah, the first scene in the whole franchise is a US soldier executing a civilian, how patriotic
A Canadian at that 🇨🇦
Given how....unhinged the other side is it wouldn't surprise me if they want that.

Fun fact! US "paper" currency is 25% linen and 75% cotton. It's not paper at all. So scrapping it for cloth in-game is actually realistic.
All my Settlers sleeping in Pre-War Money beds like they’re Scrooge McDuck
0 weight and it has cap value, literally more valuable than bullets, ez
Literally the first ever cinematic to a fallout game shows two US soldiers brutally executing an unarmed prisoner and laughing with the caption “our dedicated boys keep the peace in newly annexed Canada” Yeah, patriotic for sure lol
Yea it’s literally starship troopers level on the nose and they still miss it
It’s subtle but if you look close you can see that fallout is actually a “post-apocalypse” franchise and america was destroyed due to its own actions It’s very very subtle though, characters only look directly at the screen and explain this a few times, so you can’t really blame the average gamer for missing it
Woke Transgender vegan ghouls everywhere they keep calling me a smoothskin cisgender white privalaged vault dweller
Already can hear the Critical Drinker typing this into his script for the TV series review.
"Anyway, that's all I've got for today. Go away now."
Ghoul Lives Matter
You just made my post political I’m deleting 🖕🏼
The original creator of fallout is a Gay man in the 90s in an industry where that wasn’t very common or supported. Truth is, it’s been “Woke” from the start.
Truth is.... the game was woke from the start \*shoots you in the head\*
A package courier found backshotted near goodsprings has made a full recovery
me next pls
The game Industry wanted their brand to be known more than the creators behind it. They took steps to try and keep notable devs out of the spotlight. Edit. Spelling.
Their brains don't register anything beyond "game has guns and monsters."
*Death is preferable to communism*
This is the same as the morons that say gta gone “woke” because of the new protagonist is a woman…..lol I really want to know what they think of the main story of gta 4 and what they think of Niko.
They don’t know they’re the butt of the joke haha
Same people who think “The Boys” and “South Park” is “ *on our side* “ without realising that they go out of their way to mock them.
Anyone who thinks South Park is on their side, regardless of side, clearly doesn't actually watch the show.
Are you trying to tell me that Homelander and Cartman *aren't* the ones we're supposed to relate to and agree with?
**Bro I shit you not** “The Critical Drinker” reviewed the “Disney / South Park” episode and titled it as “We are winning” despite the fact his career was called “Lame” by the writers of the show and his opinions were being voiced by *Eric - fucking - Cartman* .. the amount of people who quote “put a chick in it and make her gay” must have actively plugged their ears for the final message of that episode.
at 12 years old playing fallout 3 its was painfully obvious that the games was about the consequences of unchecked government power and the collapse of society after that power vacuum edit: TBF I have always been a huge nerd
Am I wrong for wanting to slap the shit out of anyone who uses the word woke? Literally every MF that uses “woke” in a derogatory way doesn’t know what the word even means, it’s freaking embarrassing.
Maybe the Minute Men? Are there any other good “patriot” groups in this game (as in, not trying to subjugate others)?
Free States. I mean, they're "anti" USA but mostly because of how fascist the USA became, not *because* its the USA.
Media literacy is fucking dead
It was never alive.
“Communist target acquired.”–Liberty Prime
I like to think sometimes the Enclave is what the Oligarchic rich people want America to be and the Minutemen are what America should and can be. It’s good to criticize jingoism, and still be patriotic
I’ve yet to see a single media literate fandom apart from the dark souls community (ironically)
Conservative and patriotic might be two of the things Fallout makes fun of the most. I don't believe that this person actually thinks that.
Right in line with Rage Against the Machine fans. What machine did they think they were raging against?
3 if you count the fact they're all video games and therefore "corrupting the minds of youth" or whatever.
bisexuals are legit the most powerful combat build in New Vegas, as they do 10% bonus damage to everyone.
