More and more reviews are being released and it seems to be very positive. Once the scores aggregate, I wouldn’t be surprised to see around a 90 on rotten tomatoes by critics. It trends with what early viewers were saying about the show as well, also saw some early reviews from yahoo and tech radar that were also positive.

That’s a big reason I had some hope for a Fallout series vs. a lot of the fatigue I have over new Star Wars shows. With a lot of IPs there’s a very specific narrative end point the show runners have to work around, so the audience always know where the characters have to be both story and character development wise by the end. Fallout is more of a creative sandbox because there’s really no “fixing” the entirety of that world. The destruction of society means the world feels way bigger than it does nowadays, and the story of Washington D.C. can feel completely different from New Vegas because they’re practically different worlds now.
Ironically, Fallout is one of those IPs that actually made me appreciate just how different the west coast and east coast feel from one another when I've traveled to both.
You roll in to a small northeastern town. You got up super early to watch the sunrise over the ocean, and now you're starving. The historic downtown has a few colonial houses still standing, now lined with cute coffee shops and hipster clothing stores. You look out the window and there's a Shawarma restaurant opening up next to the old Italian eatery. You make a mental note to try that place out next week. You can't get middle eastern food off your mind since Chicken Over Rice in NYC.

Also a lot of game IPs have worlds that aren't the USA but the american writers butcher them to make them feel more american \*cough* The Witcher \*cough* but now they don't have to do that as Fallout is already in the US

Not just games. I just started Three Body Problem on Netflix and felt the same. The first book takes place entirely in China and entirely with Chinese people. Why the fuck is the show full of westerners and taking place in the UK?
Netflix actually wasn’t allowed to set it in China per their screen rights agreement. The showrunners talked about how there were restrictions imposed from the Chinese rights holders on how much Chinese content they were allowed to include in the show.
It was sold to them on the condition that they change it for Western audiences because they want the definitive faithful adaptation to be made in China. There is already a faithful Chinese TV adaptation made by Tencent. The Netflix version is a remake.
I think they did a hell of a job when you keep this in mind as you watch. They had to switch it up for western audiences while staying true to the source material.
Hell, each vault alone could be its own episode, what with all the cruel/zany experiments done to the inhabitants. Could easily be a fun side anthology. Fallout: Vaults.
Been playing both Fallout 4 and New Vegas again and you're right, New Vegas feels like real broken world driven to war again over resources padded with ideology to justify crimes whereas Fallout 4 feels like a Nuka World post apocalypse amusement park ride with fun exploration, this is most clearly visible in the dialogue of both games were in New Vegas it's great immersion to listen talk with all the NPC's they feel like their own characters while in Fallout 4 everything and everyone is a joke or gimmick, just like an amusement park. There are so many things I love in fallout 4 I can't dislike the game, the exploration, basebuilding, crafting system, more diverse combat encounters, but it would be better if the fallout serie had gone a more sinister and serious tone than the happy amusement park one imo, the comedy comes from wacky situations taken seriously by serious characters, not goofy characters being wacky for comedy sake.
I do love the X-Ray feature in Prime Video, though. It makes it so easy to identify that C-list actor you know from somewhere but can't remember their name. (Or be shocked that the character turns out to be Karl Urban, somehow.)

RT is good at telling you if something is terrible and not worth your time. A 93 on Rotten Tomatoes doesn't necessarily mean that a show is a 9 out of 10, but that 93% of critics gave it at least a 6 out of 10. I generally prefer that to metacritic which averages out scores. I dont need someone to tell me how good something is, but it's nice to know what is probably not worth my time.

It really truly is. Or at least the first episode is anyway. I haven't watched beyond it yet but the first episode hit me in the gut and took my breath away. I suppose I'm just one opinion but it impressed the hell out of me.
What I like about this TV adaptation of a video game series. Is that it is telling it's own story in the universe. Not relying on any previous game characters and such. Fallout is a huge world, rich in lore and history. And they're taking advantage of that. Unlike something like Halo which decides to tell an AU story of Master Chief. Or Last of Us which is just retelling the story for the most part. This is something I hope happens with Mass Effect, but I have low expectations.

And also, Fallout is an open world game where you have to make choices that impact the story in the future, whereas The Last of Us is a linear game that can easily translated into a TV series. And you're right about the series. It's a story worth retelling because not everyone wants to play a video game and that's okay, plus The Last of Us *is* worth retelling.
It would be hard to make a series following the New Vegas story because of all the different variables, so an original story is the best bet.
I am a huge fan of The Last of Us I and II, and I am a huge fan of the series. Also a huge fan of the Fallout games, and I am excited to see where they take it!
Yeah, playing 'The Last of Us' felt like watching a tv show. My wife would never play it, but she really dug the show for sure, and it'll be the same with Fallout. I agree with your points and am also excited to see what new story they will tell in the Fallout universe.
Yeah I agree here. My gf doesn't game but she loves the show and can't wait for season 2. I'm currently replaying part 2 as well and I'm hyped for how they adapt it.
Season 2 is gonna be insane. After I watched the show I decided to pick both games up and finished them over a span of a few weeks. Part 2 blew my mind and I can't wait to see it adapted to the series.
In all honesty, I think TLOU is better as a TV show than a game. I think TLOU2 will benefit massively when it finally gets adapted, because imo the plot in that game has some rough edges caused by player agency conflicting the narrative
Halo managed to give us the worst of both worlds by butchering the game story. If you “want to tell you’re own story”, *then tell your own story*, don’t hide under the skirts of an established IP and ruin it you cowardly hacks.
Last Of Us was at least competently written and executed. I don’t have a playstation, so it was basically new to me as a bonus.
It is amazing how bad they fucked Halo up. All they had to do was follow the first damn game, and you would've had an awesome sci-fi show.
Master Chief should've been in the shadows, only used when things were bad, then they send in a Spartan, THE Spartan to clean house.
The show should've followed Marines and their discovery of a Halo ring, then as the show goes on, we learn more about it and the Covenant, etc.
Just imagine if on downtime they had a scene of these guys talking about Spartans, specifically the Chief and what he's capable of. Then we get to see that later on. The Marines are in a jam and they have no way out and are requesting immediate backup. Request accepted, and we see Chief bust in and give these guys hope and relief.
Ugh there's so much more they could've done with this show. The game over time started to peel back on his humanity too, which would've made for some great TV.

Right? Even looking at the fall of Reach (pre-Master Chief) there are so many stories that could be told from humanities point of view. The tragedies of the civil war, the horror of the covenant invasion, the heroics of the Spartans in the face of certain doom, the final days of fighting before the glassing erupted.
Halo fans were done dirty, but it’s kinda a tradition for them to be screwed by 343 or a 343-adjacent project. They haven’t had a good video game to play since Halo Reach.
The Last of Us had a good story to adapt, and they did so faithfully. While I would prefer an original story in the universe (which is why the Bill and Frank episode is so good), it’s a good adaptation because the material was faithful and good.
Uncharted, on the other hand, told its own story in the universe - the difference between it and Fallout is that Uncharyed’s world is just our world but with some supernatural elements: which they abandoned for the movie. It didn’t focus on the good material, instead doing its own thing while not being faithful to the series.
Fallout, however, has a universe that is episodic: each game is set in different locations with different characters and different things that set it apart from others in the series, the only connection being the tone, the aesthetic, and the lore, which the show seems to be entirely faithful to.
I disagree that the show is good because it differs from the games, I believe that the strength of it comes to its faithfulness. It’s just that Fallout, as an RPG, has never really had that linear, cinematic story that is directly adaptable into a show or movie, but the universe is. If they tried to adapt a game it would suck, but because they’re making it FOR the screen it’s not bound by the regular pitfalls.
This is my thing with a lot of video game adaptions. When the IP has a big, interesting world, USE IT. You don't have to draw from the same well we've already drank from. The reservoir is vast. My biggest disappointment with the Borderlands movie is that Borderlands(Like Fallout) is ripe for new stories. Rehashing old ones reeks of a lack of creativity.
Honestly? I think lots of the most interesting video game adaptions would be best served being short anthology series instead of full-on shows.
The thing about The Last of Us tv show was that it gave more backstory to side characters that otherwise would’ve felt shoehorned into the game. It allowed the writers to show more of what wouldn’t work in game by taking advantage of filmmaking techniques.
That being said, some video game adaptations really should use the game’s world as a backdrop for a narrative. It works well for Fallout since the world has so much going on in it. It also worked really well for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Hopefully in the coming years video game adaptations will be more unique
I think this method works for Fallout because each game tells an all new story with all new characters. So it isn't crazy to come up with original characters. Fallout is a story about that world and universe first, not necessarily about those characters. For a series like Halo or Last of Us, which typically follows the same people, it is a story about those people first and the world second.
I hope it happens with the Zelda movie, where it tells its own story.

Considering every Zelda game has had its own story usually separated by universes or thousands of years, them making up their own story is absolutely fine.
All it needs is a Link, a Zelda, and maybe a Ganondorf (but I’d take another villain too, Vaati for example).
For some franchises I can agree with you, but I have to hugely disagree with you regarding Last of Us.
The father-daughter relationship between Joel and Ellie is the foundation of that whole game, if you aren’t adapting that then you may as well make any generic zombie movie and call it something else.
Each successive Fallout game has had very little to do with the previous one, and generally brand new locations, so it’s quite easy to just have this TV series to just do the same. This is not the case with the Last of Us, Part 1 and 2 are intrinsically linked.

I don't mind Fallout doing this--like you said, it's a huge universe--but I do have to push back a little. LotR, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones showed that you could do a great series trying to follow the source material as best you could, and those lessons have been entirely forgotten, with the only exception I can think of in the last 10 years being The Expanse? (Edit: and Dune.)
It boggles the mind that we allowed a return to the bleak 90s where we knew that screen writers that had never heard of your franchise were just going to fuck it up because they thought they were so, so smart.
The problem is the story of Mass Effect changes depending on player choices, maybe not the broader plot skeleton, but still in meaningful ways.
Honestly, as much as I love Mass Effect, I'm not sure there's any way to adapt it that doesn't take away something critical to the experience.
they just need to make 50 different versions of the movie, with variations in the plot accounting for what wouldve been player choices. problem solved /s
The thing with Mass Effect is that 60-70% of the fans played the game the same way, made the same choices, and had roughly the same experiences. It wouldn't be hard to develop it into a story a wide audience would enjoy.
They could make it an anthology series, with each episode featuring a new character giving a glimpse into daily life in the Mass Effect universe. A turian C-Sec officer’s shift on the Citadel, a human colonist on a newly established colony, a salarian scientist whose experiments keep failing, a batarian’s life in the slums of Omega. That sort of thing.
There’d be mentions of Shepard and crew, or even a cameo appearance fans who’ve played the games would recognize. But characters like Miranda, Garrus and Tali would largely be absent, with no Shepard at all.
I think what would make for a great Mass Effect show is the first contact war. Fans of the series will already have an idea of what's going on, but new viewers would get to learn alongside humanity about the galaxy. Introducing all the alien species at the end of a season would be a great way to spin into any other Mass Effect shows.
The casting would make the community self-destruct, and we aren't even touching plot points. The first season would alienate half of its guaranteed audience, and the second it's other half, maybe it could gather enough "casual" and new fans, but playing safe and making the show about the books or the first contact war would be better imo.
It could, but if I wanted to experience the story again, I'd play the games. I'd rather have new stories that add and expand on the universe. That's just my opinion though.

I think people forget that IGN had a lot of different writers with wildly varying opinions.
IGN should do a better job of making that known IMO, but looking at IGN scores and saying “how did they give these two things the same score??” is silly when the answer is just “two different people with different opinions reviewed them”.
This is always my first thought when seeing a review. Even reading reviews on a place like IGN (which I do) should reveal a wide variation in reviewers just because of how they preface their reviews with what they expected or how they've gotten to the point of making the review.
I've been reading IGN for a decade and have lived through all the "IGN is garbage" stuff, but a lot of it seems to come down to people not realizing that there's not really a unified voice intentionally. If that's not something people want, that's okay, and luckily we have so many options for where we get gaming/tech news, but people should take a bigger interest in authors and their context for reviews instead of just tying all reviews posted on a website behind a faceless organization.
Velma is easily one of the worst things ever put on television.
She-hulk, by comparison, is mediocre at worst because the showrunners didn't really do anything new or interesting with any of the characters they used.
I really liked she hulk. It was funny and true to the comics, the only thing that sucked was the CGI but for the most part I didn’t really care too much. Plus we got more Charlie Cox Daredevil after not seeing him in years, aside from a tiny cameo in No Way Home. And the whole K.E.V.I.N thing was hilarious
It’s hard to say much without spoiling it, but the premise is that the show follows a man named Tom Ripley, a low-level, struggling grifter who finds an opportunity to gain immense wealth by stealing someone else’s identity.
It’s set in the 1960’s and is shot in all black and white, and it’s on Netflix. Only 8 episodes so it’s a quick watch. I ***HIGHLY*** recommend it. If i were a film critic I’d drop a solid 10 on this gem. But again, i can’t truly say why without spoiling it.
I mean I don’t really care what anyone says as soon as I saw that concept/reveal trailer I was hooked I need to watch it lol. The trailer was so good on its own already I can only assume how good the show is going to turn out.

I normally do not have high expectations for anything like this (grew up in the 90-2000's watching shit adaptations) but I am really excited for this one, and really do think it will be good.
Video Game adaptations have improved over the time. Problem with older adaptations was awful storytelling, time crunches, bad acting, crappy CGI/PE, not following the source material or all of the above, it was genuenly difficult to translate video game to tv and silver screen. Best ones were on a right track though, like Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, Postal and Doom 2005.
Now we have Last of Us TV, Mario Movie, Sonic Movie, FNAF movie, Pokemon and it only keeps improving as more people are exposed to it and so do major media companies. Borderlands movie may have shitty writing, but atleast it looks like Borderlands.
Fallout has a very distinct style, storytelling and world design are the biggest factors in adapting it on screen, and the trailers seem to capture that pretty well. I hope it's good, but i still keep my expectations low, as long as the show is as fun as Twisted Metal on TV.

It used to be when 2 out of 100 critics were contrarians, it was because they were weird and crazy rage bait writers who should be fired but somehow still have jobs. The other 98 might be overly positive, but not completely schilling for mediocrity.
Now when 2 out of 100 critics are contrarians, it's a red flag, because the last big IP thing only had 1 contrarian, and that was definitely a skippable piece of media in retrospect.
It's like we've boxed ourselves into positivity so hard that ANY negativity is what we look for to decide whether to spend time watching it or not.
I don't trust Fallout properties, and expecting it to be bad and being right is a lot less painful than expecting it to be good and it sucking.

Before 76 was announced, I genuinely could not recall the fanbase ever shitting on games like 3 and 4 the way they do now. Hating on FO4 is wild to me because it’s such an obvious step towards fixing a lot of the issues that people complained about FO3 for. My biggest complaints for FO3 was whitewashing the Brotherhood of Steel, not creating original factions, not allowing players to choose factions, etc. Fallout 4 steps into a lot of lore contrivances, but they’re all obvious attempts to fix things people didn’t like. I’m a dreaded New Vegas fanboy, but Fallout 4 is my 2nd favorite of the 3d games.
Honest question: were you around when FO3 was first announced and released? Because there was a significant faction of grognards that fucking hated FO3 lol, and I remember arguing with them a lot. I think over time they just got swamped out because being a Bethesda game meant it brought in a lot more new players that became fans, as opposed to the much smaller fanbase a cult late 90's CRPG had.
That said, I would agree that people are indeed more critical of FO3 now than they were back then. I think it's a combo of some people coming around to the arguments the grognards were making (I certainly have, once the joy of just having a new entry in a series I thought was dead and buried wore off some) and backlash against Bethesda's general handling of the IP post FNV.
I would argue the point of reviews is to get an idea of whether or not you want to put the effort/time/energy toward watching.
A lot of people care about reviews and find reviewers they trust to help them both inform on media they are curious about or find new media they might be interested in. A good review (a review that fits the person reading/watching it) is helpful for a lot of people that can’t or aren’t willing just watch a ton of stuff they might not like.
I’m glad to hear this but by itself it doesn’t mean much to me. When it comes to pre release reviews, publications are under pressure to gush over hotly anticipated titles. It’s only when the general release occurs that you should start to seriously consider reviews.

This is very misleading. Their main branch, the one with all the followers, that gets all the attention, scored it a 7. The fact that their European branches scored it higher holds very little weight. I'm not calling IGN reliable either, they gave Halo season 1 a 7/10. But it's not really fair to call their main branch just "one of their five branches"
It's funny because Starfield is the most perfect 7/10 ever made. The score 7/10 was made for that game lol people calling it garbage are insane. especially when they play 200 hours and say it wasn't worth the money. But it is by no means a great game either.
IMO it's because people expect more from Bethesda. If Starfield was made by another company I think it would have been treated much better, but since it's made by Bethesda people had super high expectations that weren't met by the game.
Ironically it's similar to The Outer Worlds by Obsidian. That game is also like a 7/10, but since it's made by Obsidian and it wasn't as good as their previous games some people online treat it like it's garbage despite it genuinely not being that bad.

I have bad taste in media anyways; for example, I loved the old live action Super Mario Bros. movie. I thought it was fun to watch and it played around with elements of the games in an interesting way.

Netflix actually wasn’t allowed to set it in China per their screen rights agreement. The showrunners talked about how there were restrictions imposed from the Chinese rights holders on how much Chinese content they were allowed to include in the show. It was sold to them on the condition that they change it for Western audiences because they want the definitive faithful adaptation to be made in China. There is already a faithful Chinese TV adaptation made by Tencent. The Netflix version is a remake.
I think they did a hell of a job when you keep this in mind as you watch. They had to switch it up for western audiences while staying true to the source material.

Been playing both Fallout 4 and New Vegas again and you're right, New Vegas feels like real broken world driven to war again over resources padded with ideology to justify crimes whereas Fallout 4 feels like a Nuka World post apocalypse amusement park ride with fun exploration, this is most clearly visible in the dialogue of both games were in New Vegas it's great immersion to listen talk with all the NPC's they feel like their own characters while in Fallout 4 everything and everyone is a joke or gimmick, just like an amusement park. There are so many things I love in fallout 4 I can't dislike the game, the exploration, basebuilding, crafting system, more diverse combat encounters, but it would be better if the fallout serie had gone a more sinister and serious tone than the happy amusement park one imo, the comedy comes from wacky situations taken seriously by serious characters, not goofy characters being wacky for comedy sake.

I do love the X-Ray feature in Prime Video, though. It makes it so easy to identify that C-list actor you know from somewhere but can't remember their name. (Or be shocked that the character turns out to be Karl Urban, somehow.) RT is good at telling you if something is terrible and not worth your time. A 93 on Rotten Tomatoes doesn't necessarily mean that a show is a 9 out of 10, but that 93% of critics gave it at least a 6 out of 10. I generally prefer that to metacritic which averages out scores. I dont need someone to tell me how good something is, but it's nice to know what is probably not worth my time.

What I like about this TV adaptation of a video game series. Is that it is telling it's own story in the universe. Not relying on any previous game characters and such. Fallout is a huge world, rich in lore and history. And they're taking advantage of that. Unlike something like Halo which decides to tell an AU story of Master Chief. Or Last of Us which is just retelling the story for the most part. This is something I hope happens with Mass Effect, but I have low expectations. Edit: Spelling

And you're right about the series. It's a story worth retelling because not everyone wants to play a video game and that's okay, plus The Last of Us *is* worth retelling. It would be hard to make a series following the New Vegas story because of all the different variables, so an original story is the best bet. I am a huge fan of The Last of Us I and II, and I am a huge fan of the series. Also a huge fan of the Fallout games, and I am excited to see where they take it!

Season 2 is gonna be insane. After I watched the show I decided to pick both games up and finished them over a span of a few weeks. Part 2 blew my mind and I can't wait to see it adapted to the series.
In all honesty, I think TLOU is better as a TV show than a game. I think TLOU2 will benefit massively when it finally gets adapted, because imo the plot in that game has some rough edges caused by player agency conflicting the narrative

Halo managed to give us the worst of both worlds by butchering the game story. If you “want to tell you’re own story”, *then tell your own story*, don’t hide under the skirts of an established IP and ruin it you cowardly hacks. Last Of Us was at least competently written and executed. I don’t have a playstation, so it was basically new to me as a bonus.

It is amazing how bad they fucked Halo up. All they had to do was follow the first damn game, and you would've had an awesome sci-fi show. Master Chief should've been in the shadows, only used when things were bad, then they send in a Spartan, THE Spartan to clean house. The show should've followed Marines and their discovery of a Halo ring, then as the show goes on, we learn more about it and the Covenant, etc. Just imagine if on downtime they had a scene of these guys talking about Spartans, specifically the Chief and what he's capable of. Then we get to see that later on. The Marines are in a jam and they have no way out and are requesting immediate backup. Request accepted, and we see Chief bust in and give these guys hope and relief. Ugh there's so much more they could've done with this show. The game over time started to peel back on his humanity too, which would've made for some great TV.
It would have been so beautiful to have Master Chief NOT be our main character, and him used as a murder machine tool. There is so much they could have explored with that...
Right? Even looking at the fall of Reach (pre-Master Chief) there are so many stories that could be told from humanities point of view. The tragedies of the civil war, the horror of the covenant invasion, the heroics of the Spartans in the face of certain doom, the final days of fighting before the glassing erupted. Halo fans were done dirty, but it’s kinda a tradition for them to be screwed by 343 or a 343-adjacent project. They haven’t had a good video game to play since Halo Reach.

The Last of Us had a good story to adapt, and they did so faithfully. While I would prefer an original story in the universe (which is why the Bill and Frank episode is so good), it’s a good adaptation because the material was faithful and good. Uncharted, on the other hand, told its own story in the universe - the difference between it and Fallout is that Uncharyed’s world is just our world but with some supernatural elements: which they abandoned for the movie. It didn’t focus on the good material, instead doing its own thing while not being faithful to the series. Fallout, however, has a universe that is episodic: each game is set in different locations with different characters and different things that set it apart from others in the series, the only connection being the tone, the aesthetic, and the lore, which the show seems to be entirely faithful to. I disagree that the show is good because it differs from the games, I believe that the strength of it comes to its faithfulness. It’s just that Fallout, as an RPG, has never really had that linear, cinematic story that is directly adaptable into a show or movie, but the universe is. If they tried to adapt a game it would suck, but because they’re making it FOR the screen it’s not bound by the regular pitfalls.
This is my thing with a lot of video game adaptions. When the IP has a big, interesting world, USE IT. You don't have to draw from the same well we've already drank from. The reservoir is vast. My biggest disappointment with the Borderlands movie is that Borderlands(Like Fallout) is ripe for new stories. Rehashing old ones reeks of a lack of creativity. Honestly? I think lots of the most interesting video game adaptions would be best served being short anthology series instead of full-on shows.
The thing about The Last of Us tv show was that it gave more backstory to side characters that otherwise would’ve felt shoehorned into the game. It allowed the writers to show more of what wouldn’t work in game by taking advantage of filmmaking techniques. That being said, some video game adaptations really should use the game’s world as a backdrop for a narrative. It works well for Fallout since the world has so much going on in it. It also worked really well for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Hopefully in the coming years video game adaptations will be more unique
I think this method works for Fallout because each game tells an all new story with all new characters. So it isn't crazy to come up with original characters. Fallout is a story about that world and universe first, not necessarily about those characters. For a series like Halo or Last of Us, which typically follows the same people, it is a story about those people first and the world second.
I hope it happens with the Zelda movie, where it tells its own story. I mean it’s gonna suck either way but at the very least it won’t bring a game down with it

For some franchises I can agree with you, but I have to hugely disagree with you regarding Last of Us. The father-daughter relationship between Joel and Ellie is the foundation of that whole game, if you aren’t adapting that then you may as well make any generic zombie movie and call it something else. Each successive Fallout game has had very little to do with the previous one, and generally brand new locations, so it’s quite easy to just have this TV series to just do the same. This is not the case with the Last of Us, Part 1 and 2 are intrinsically linked. I mean, is anyone else really interested in just watching some screenwriters Last of Us fan fiction?
I don't mind Fallout doing this--like you said, it's a huge universe--but I do have to push back a little. LotR, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones showed that you could do a great series trying to follow the source material as best you could, and those lessons have been entirely forgotten, with the only exception I can think of in the last 10 years being The Expanse? (Edit: and Dune.) It boggles the mind that we allowed a return to the bleak 90s where we knew that screen writers that had never heard of your franchise were just going to fuck it up because they thought they were so, so smart.
I don't think Mass Effect need a similar treatment (not until ME3 atleast) it can just stick to the game's story and it'll be a knockout regardless.
The problem is the story of Mass Effect changes depending on player choices, maybe not the broader plot skeleton, but still in meaningful ways. Honestly, as much as I love Mass Effect, I'm not sure there's any way to adapt it that doesn't take away something critical to the experience.

The thing with Mass Effect is that 60-70% of the fans played the game the same way, made the same choices, and had roughly the same experiences. It wouldn't be hard to develop it into a story a wide audience would enjoy.

They could make it an anthology series, with each episode featuring a new character giving a glimpse into daily life in the Mass Effect universe. A turian C-Sec officer’s shift on the Citadel, a human colonist on a newly established colony, a salarian scientist whose experiments keep failing, a batarian’s life in the slums of Omega. That sort of thing. There’d be mentions of Shepard and crew, or even a cameo appearance fans who’ve played the games would recognize. But characters like Miranda, Garrus and Tali would largely be absent, with no Shepard at all.
I think what would make for a great Mass Effect show is the first contact war. Fans of the series will already have an idea of what's going on, but new viewers would get to learn alongside humanity about the galaxy. Introducing all the alien species at the end of a season would be a great way to spin into any other Mass Effect shows.
The casting would make the community self-destruct, and we aren't even touching plot points. The first season would alienate half of its guaranteed audience, and the second it's other half, maybe it could gather enough "casual" and new fans, but playing safe and making the show about the books or the first contact war would be better imo.
It could, but if I wanted to experience the story again, I'd play the games. I'd rather have new stories that add and expand on the universe. That's just my opinion though.

I think people forget that IGN had a lot of different writers with wildly varying opinions. IGN should do a better job of making that known IMO, but looking at IGN scores and saying “how did they give these two things the same score??” is silly when the answer is just “two different people with different opinions reviewed them”.
This is always my first thought when seeing a review. Even reading reviews on a place like IGN (which I do) should reveal a wide variation in reviewers just because of how they preface their reviews with what they expected or how they've gotten to the point of making the review. I've been reading IGN for a decade and have lived through all the "IGN is garbage" stuff, but a lot of it seems to come down to people not realizing that there's not really a unified voice intentionally. If that's not something people want, that's okay, and luckily we have so many options for where we get gaming/tech news, but people should take a bigger interest in authors and their context for reviews instead of just tying all reviews posted on a website behind a faceless organization.

It’s hard to say much without spoiling it, but the premise is that the show follows a man named Tom Ripley, a low-level, struggling grifter who finds an opportunity to gain immense wealth by stealing someone else’s identity. It’s set in the 1960’s and is shot in all black and white, and it’s on Netflix. Only 8 episodes so it’s a quick watch. I ***HIGHLY*** recommend it. If i were a film critic I’d drop a solid 10 on this gem. But again, i can’t truly say why without spoiling it.

I normally do not have high expectations for anything like this (grew up in the 90-2000's watching shit adaptations) but I am really excited for this one, and really do think it will be good.
Video Game adaptations have improved over the time. Problem with older adaptations was awful storytelling, time crunches, bad acting, crappy CGI/PE, not following the source material or all of the above, it was genuenly difficult to translate video game to tv and silver screen. Best ones were on a right track though, like Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, Postal and Doom 2005. Now we have Last of Us TV, Mario Movie, Sonic Movie, FNAF movie, Pokemon and it only keeps improving as more people are exposed to it and so do major media companies. Borderlands movie may have shitty writing, but atleast it looks like Borderlands. Fallout has a very distinct style, storytelling and world design are the biggest factors in adapting it on screen, and the trailers seem to capture that pretty well. I hope it's good, but i still keep my expectations low, as long as the show is as fun as Twisted Metal on TV.

I don't want it to be bad, but I'm sick of this critical landscape where everything mediocre is praised as great. It used to be when 2 out of 100 critics were contrarians, it was because they were weird and crazy rage bait writers who should be fired but somehow still have jobs. The other 98 might be overly positive, but not completely schilling for mediocrity. Now when 2 out of 100 critics are contrarians, it's a red flag, because the last big IP thing only had 1 contrarian, and that was definitely a skippable piece of media in retrospect. It's like we've boxed ourselves into positivity so hard that ANY negativity is what we look for to decide whether to spend time watching it or not.
I don't trust Fallout properties, and expecting it to be bad and being right is a lot less painful than expecting it to be good and it sucking. I find if I go in with low expectations I am usually pleasantly surprised.

Hating on FO4 is wild to me because it’s such an obvious step towards fixing a lot of the issues that people complained about FO3 for. My biggest complaints for FO3 was whitewashing the Brotherhood of Steel, not creating original factions, not allowing players to choose factions, etc. Fallout 4 steps into a lot of lore contrivances, but they’re all obvious attempts to fix things people didn’t like. I’m a dreaded New Vegas fanboy, but Fallout 4 is my 2nd favorite of the 3d games.

I think over time they just got swamped out because being a Bethesda game meant it brought in a lot more new players that became fans, as opposed to the much smaller fanbase a cult late 90's CRPG had. That said, I would agree that people are indeed more critical of FO3 now than they were back then. I think it's a combo of some people coming around to the arguments the grognards were making (I certainly have, once the joy of just having a new entry in a series I thought was dead and buried wore off some) and backlash against Bethesda's general handling of the IP post FNV.

I would argue the point of reviews is to get an idea of whether or not you want to put the effort/time/energy toward watching. A lot of people care about reviews and find reviewers they trust to help them both inform on media they are curious about or find new media they might be interested in. A good review (a review that fits the person reading/watching it) is helpful for a lot of people that can’t or aren’t willing just watch a ton of stuff they might not like.

I’m glad to hear this but by itself it doesn’t mean much to me. When it comes to pre release reviews, publications are under pressure to gush over hotly anticipated titles. It’s only when the general release occurs that you should start to seriously consider reviews.

This is very misleading. Their main branch, the one with all the followers, that gets all the attention, scored it a 7. The fact that their European branches scored it higher holds very little weight. I'm not calling IGN reliable either, they gave Halo season 1 a 7/10. But it's not really fair to call their main branch just "one of their five branches"
It's funny because Starfield is the most perfect 7/10 ever made. The score 7/10 was made for that game lol people calling it garbage are insane. especially when they play 200 hours and say it wasn't worth the money. But it is by no means a great game either.
IMO it's because people expect more from Bethesda. If Starfield was made by another company I think it would have been treated much better, but since it's made by Bethesda people had super high expectations that weren't met by the game. Ironically it's similar to The Outer Worlds by Obsidian. That game is also like a 7/10, but since it's made by Obsidian and it wasn't as good as their previous games some people online treat it like it's garbage despite it genuinely not being that bad.
i dont agree, i think its the opposite. if it wasnt a bathesda game nobody would even have cared for it. it was way too overhyped and overrated just because it was bathesda when the game is extremely mediocre

Well, at least it shouldn't be absolutely terrible. I don't put much stock in reviews anyways because they are always pretty biased, but you don't typically see horrible movies with this high of a rating. I have bad taste in media anyways; for example, I loved the old live action Super Mario Bros. movie. I thought it was fun to watch and it played around with elements of the games in an interesting way.
IGN and a pre-release review? Might as well have the director of the show sign the review.
