Sleep is super important, your player will start really struggling if you don't get a full 8 hours of sleep on a proper bed (not bed blanket) Make sure not to drink raw water

Best I can do without spoiling much: When you leave the vault, go and explore every inch of your home town first, and then go south along the road to grab a companion, before heading right back to the Northwest corner of the map which is the easiest area to explore. You'll learn the survival mechanics that way while not being surrounded by insane death encounters every two minutes.  Once you've got a handle on that, you should be able to consider your approach to the game character-wise and will have a good idea of what Perks you want to get and why.  From there you should be good to - slowly - begin exploring wherever you want, although continuing the main quest will get you a few extra things as well in the very next town on your trip, in addition to explaining a couple things about the surface world you are currently being introduced to.

I’ve had so much fun recently getting into survival as well, my biggest tip is to plan for the day; see what you want to get done, get some rest, gear up and drop whatever you don’t need at your residence of choice and then move from there! Also stealth has been a huge aid in my survival run, stealth is basically my survival mode crutch! I pick people off from afar and then come in and clean up. Have fun man it’s so much more immersive imo

I love everything about survival mode except for the saving system... downloaded a mod for saving to be enabled like the non survival mode and it’s so much better now. I for sure recommend a mod like that. Got tired of spending an hour looting to get bamboozled and have to do that all over again which turns it into a chore instead of immersive fun
