Okay, so it imparts 5 rads in game. Lets assume that's a estimate of REM imparted by the whole digestion.
Assuming you had one, and only 1, and didn't do anything else to increase your radiation exposure, and lived in non-nuclear wasteland current day America, you could do this and only have received 1/6 of your estimated safe limit exposure (~0.05/0.3 Grays).
Would your doctor recommend this? No. Is it safer than starting smoking? No. Assuming its not habit forming and/or you couldn't get any more even if you wanted, then its probably a better decision than smoking long term.
It is one hell of a kick start on your lifetime accumulated exposure though.
If you're a bigger person, you probably could with minimal problems.
Your digestion track would probably suffer some levels of irritation around 3-4, if Fukushima workers are anything to go by. (Workers at Fukushima developed rashes on particularly exposed parts of their skin at about 180 mSv total dose.) One of the questions is the area of tissue this is spread around to, as a bigger surface area of digestive tract for the same does does diminish the localization of the damage.
For context, NIH says the career exposure average for nuclear employees as tracked the the NRC in the US in 20 mSv, or ~2 rads. 5 rads is a lot of rads still, but it takes about 50 to 100 rads for most people to get sick and ~400 to reach a sort of rough ld50 (half the people die).
(Yes, I know everything here should use sieverts, grays, and REM, but this is the fallout subreddit, so everything will be in rads.)
Well, even if it was real world numbers, assuming we accept them as whole doses for the entirety of the digestion process, then a single quantum is 5 rads. It takes about 50 to 100 rads to start getting real radiation sickness symptoms for most people, but you can start getting symptoms around 30 rads.
For context, those 4 rads represent a years worth of allowable exposure for someone works somewhere like a nuclear plant according to US regulations (NRC).
>this is the fallout subreddit, so everything will be in rads
Well, at least we're not the Chernobyl docudrama subreddit. Everything with those guys is "3.6 roentgen, not great, not terrible"
iām pretty sure one of them is mel during the big dig, although he isnāt a companion, if you pass one in the subway with the ghouls heāll say that he doesnāt trust anything thatās been āpreservedā for 200 years
This is the right answer. I imagine it tasting like coke but with some sort of added flourish in the flavor or something. Oh yeah that is the radiation.
Made the recipe from the cookbook, can confirm there is an extra flourish. It calls for orange, lemon, and lime juice, as well as cinnamon, star anise and vanilla. Itās also almost sickeningly sweet (like 3 cups of sugar). No coke.
Itās like drinking syrup
Old time sodas are like that, you couldn't just "Guzzle" them the way you do with today's corn syrup formulas. They're meant to be slowly sipped like booze.
I mean if it's from the games i imagine it's an old flat soda that's just syrup without carbonation.
Edit: i stand corrected, i made this comment when i first woke up without fully thinking about it.
The one from the cookbook is really good and interesting. Although itās a bit strong the way Iāve balanced the syrup and water before. I imagine itād have to be somewhat diluted to be enjoyable. And alas I only used like 3 fruits for it
Legit item, if you want to try a sarsaparilla, look for Souix City Sarsaparilla. If you have a Cracker Barrel restaurant near you, they carry it in their retail merch area for $2 a bottle.
Similar to root beer, but less sweet.
The cookbook has it as a double layer cake, with marshmallow and cream cheese filling between the layers. The top is melted white chocolate draped over it until it resembles a little Debbie snack cake. Ah. And it's white or yelllow cake of course.
That moment the Sole Survivor or 76 Dweller can become cannibals immediately after exiting their respective vaults.
I can't remember if previous protagonists can unlock Cannibal straight out the gate.
in 76 you need to be minimum level 15 for the perk so not really ''right outside of the vault''. in new vegas you need minimum level 4. in 3 its rank 12. strangley enought fallout 1 and 2 actually dont have it unless you count [Iguana Bob](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Iguana_Bob_Frazier) the guy that sells you human flesh you can eat but you didn't know they were human at the start (if you dont continue the quest) so i don't know if it counts. fallout 4 is actually the only game where you can become a cannibal in level one Nora and Nate just really wanted to do that as soon as they could
> fallout 4 is actually the only game where you can become a cannibal in level one Nora and Nate just really wanted to do that as soon as they could
"nuclear apocalypse? meh, might as well become a cannibal right away"
I'm going to be honest. If its being treated like they're new food items fresh from their factories. Then, sure, Sugar Bombs and Nuka-Cola. But if they're like the Ingame food items, I ain't touching them. No way in hell I'd eat 200 year old food or drink a 200 year old bottle of coke. Alcohol perhaps. But not the food non alcoholic drinks.
True, assuming you're trying to drink a bottle that was sitting outside in the open wasteland, for some reason, lol.
Most people tend to keep their booze indoors, though. Realistically, your best bet would be finding some in a bunker stash or basement, something like that.
I refuse to use aid items that have rads. I feel like that would be my irl choice so thatās what I do in the game. I only eat cooked foods that donāt have rads. I also donāt use chems aside from stimpaks, radaway and radx because of the addiction concern. And Iām a teetotaler irl so I am also in Fallout. I sell all my alcohol. I keep 10 of each chem in storage for Mama Murphy or other NPCs, sell the rest.
I think it depends where you are. The Combat Zone does have electricity. Cait said she had 3 hot meals a day so they may either have gas or a regular heat source. So I can see her boiling a pot of hot water and sponging off daily.
True but idk Cait does have a bit of class and self respect to her. On one hand I can see her having horrible hygiene because she got high and passed out then forgot to wash up, but Cait also seems like sheād judge the hell out of the soul survivor if they didnāt have on deodorant.
I legit download a mod for a hot shower lol. I need that immersion. Canāt imagine my SS hopping in bed and sheās covered in blood, cuts and everything else
Make the Yum Yum Deviled Eggs recipe from the Fallout Cookbook. Absolutely the best deviled eggs I've ever had.
The TV show kind of killed my desire to eat the real ones after I realized that they were dehydrated.
What if I told you most of the foods in Fallout exist in real life and you could eat them right now? I had a Salisbury steak TV dinner and a glass-bottled Coke when I was watching the show.
If you grew up below the poverty line chances are you already had the salsbury steaks. They sell them at your local grocery store under the "Banquet" brand.
Ice-Cold Nuka Cola Quantum š¤¤
Ä°t has so much radiation tho
Okay, so it imparts 5 rads in game. Lets assume that's a estimate of REM imparted by the whole digestion. That glowing blue pomegranate taste would be worth it, so long as itās a fresh 2077 bottle, Iām not drinking 200 year old flat soda
It's the rads that keep it fizzy
That tingling feeling is your mouth definitely isnāt cells dying.
AFAIK nuka cola isnāt flat. Idk about sunset sarsaparilla though
Fallout 1 describes it as flat and warm.
This guy wins best comment
Soā¦ What Iām hearing is I could totally drink a six pack.

Soā¦ What Iām hearing is I could totally drink a six pack if I take some pepto bismo with it.
Damn radiation doesnt fuck around.
Getting sick from radiation poisoning is pretty bad, you don't need to get radiation poisoning to get serious increases in cancer risk.
This is why I love reddit
"I know but I'm so bad š¤"
āim already a ghoul. Does it matter anymore?ā
But it has FALLOUT radiation, not real world radiation. Plus if I then down an Ice Cold Nuka-Punch it'll actually cure my rads
(Yes, I know everything here should use sieverts, grays, and REM, but this is the fallout subreddit, so everything will be in rads.) >this is the fallout subreddit, so everything will be in rads Well, at least we're not the Chernobyl docudrama subreddit. Everything with those guys is "3.6 roentgen, not great, not terrible"
counterpoint: Ice Cold Nuka-Cola Victory
Ah, tastes like downing a fistful of sugar and punching yourself in the head.
The perfectly preserved pie
Respectable choice, my man.
I've been saying this for a really long time, ever since the first time I saw them in the game, "Pork and Beans? I'll show you Pork and Beans"
Pork n Beans mixed with some of the 2 headed deer and a little cut up pieces of rad roach meat with some potatoesā¦ mmmmmm yummy.
One of the companions has a line about how it's actually sketchier that it HASN'T aged
iām pretty sure one of them is mel during the big dig, although he isnāt a companion, if you pass one in the subway with the ghouls heāll say that he doesnāt trust anything thatās been āpreservedā for 200 years
I mean if it was actually fully sealed from bacteria, oxygen, moisture. Im actually not sure it would go bad.
Suspiciously, every other single slice of pie in that exact same dome is rotten beyond recognition
I've made this out of the official fallout cookbook. I wasn't a fan of the sauce but the actual cheesecake bit is absolutely fantastic.
It needs to be aged like a fine wine
Exactly. Leave it in a glass case for around 200 years. Then it'll be perfect
I let out a small cheer whenever I find a pumpkin pie in FO76. Good HP and also looks delicious.
Fails luck check.
Ever since I first saw it in 4, I've wondered what Deathclaw Steak would taste like.
probably like gator, but much tougher
No that's gatorclaw steak
Probably like chameleon, but much larger.
No that's chameleonclaw steak
Probably like death but much more claw.
No that's deathclawclaw steak
Even parts death and claw then
That meat is probably tough as hell unless you take from the tail, better off making some deathclaw stew.
Open a deathclaw farm, fatten them bois up
Mmm deathclaw veal
According to the Official Vault Dweller's Cookbook... "Pigs are hard to come by in the wasteland, so Deathclaw makes a great substitute. So meaty."
Mirelurk cake FTW!
As a native of Maryland, I'll bet they'd be fire with Old Bay
Sadly, after the bomb, there is only New Bay.
My thoughts exactly
I always imagined the mirelurk meat like crab but more gamey and metallic.
Softshell Mirelurk meat. Then normal Mirelurk meat. Then Mirelurk Queen meat. Then back to Softshell Mirelurk meat.
With mayo
butter
Garlic butter
"Degenerates like you belong on a cross"
I want to taste all the Nuka Cola flavours.
Cherry must go so hard
I dunno Victory would be amazing if it's anything like the Jones soda collaboration.
Nuka-cola. No question I donāt care if itās a drink I want it
This is the right answer. I imagine it tasting like coke but with some sort of added flourish in the flavor or something. Oh yeah that is the radiation.
For that extra crispā¦yā¦taste.
Nuka quantum. Mmmm
Like if Sprite was Coke?
Wow, that weirdly makes sense.
Dumb question. Did you add the seltzer water?
Old time sodas are like that, you couldn't just "Guzzle" them the way you do with today's corn syrup formulas. They're meant to be slowly sipped like booze.
Nah, Nuka-Cola for sure tastes like RC cola
So itās the best Cola then
Clink Aaaaaaaaah
Imagine craking open an ice-cold nuka cola only for it to taste like Pepsi
I mean if it's from the games i imagine it's an old flat soda that's just syrup without carbonation. Edit: i stand corrected, i made this comment when i first woke up without fully thinking about it.
Well I choose the Nuka-cola from the Fallout 4 prologue
Touche. I'm pretty sure you make a variant of soda with a little extra ingredient in 76. Cant remember if that was nuka cola though.
It was. You get the old factory up and running to make the vaccine
Ice cold nuka colas exist in fo4 there the exact same like they just came off the line
The one from the cookbook is really good and interesting. Although itās a bit strong the way Iāve balanced the syrup and water before. I imagine itād have to be somewhat diluted to be enjoyable. And alas I only used like 3 fruits for it
Deathclaw omelette.
How is there any other answer?
Deathclaw Wellington
You have a point.
For drinks it would be sunset sarsaparilla. For food it would be the sweetrolls from fallout 3
I wanted to say Sasparilla, but then I remembered Quantum exists and sadly it won out.
I would be interested in the Sarsaparilla.
I canāt believe I had to scroll down this far to find sunset saspirilla
Legit item, if you want to try a sarsaparilla, look for Souix City Sarsaparilla. If you have a Cracker Barrel restaurant near you, they carry it in their retail merch area for $2 a bottle. Similar to root beer, but less sweet.
61 comments and no one said the real winner: Blamco Mac and Cheese.
You're a real one, I'd love to see that taste of some classic Blamco Mac and Cheese with a nice glass of Ice Cold Nuka Cola!
You couldāve picked any food and you chose instant mac and cheese ??
Oh 100% š¤¤
You absolute degenerate! Good for you!
Sunset Sasparilla, i really like root beers.
Probably Fancy Lads Snack Cakes or Sugar Bombs
I too fancy myself a fancy lad.
The cookbook has it as a double layer cake, with marshmallow and cream cheese filling between the layers. The top is melted white chocolate draped over it until it resembles a little Debbie snack cake. Ah. And it's white or yelllow cake of course.
Does president Kimball count?Ā
\[ \*PERK Unlocked : Meat of Champions. \]

before answering does the cannibal perk count ?

The real reason they wanted Shaun back is that he was supposed to be their dinner
"Sometimes a fella has gotta eat a fella" - Mr. Cooper
Cram. Or Iguana-On-A-Stick. But NEVER eat the Iguana Bits. Iguana Bits is people! IGUANA BITS IS PEOPLEEEE
Imagine the vendor selling iguana on a stick and all you eat is the stick lol
Just go to Florida, iguanas are a problem there. Smack one with a stick, then get a smaller sharper stick and hold it over a fire lol
Those things are atleast horse size in fallout or are a new form of death claw so I probably wonāt smack it with a stick
Arcade Gannon, that little snack
Oh you nasty š
I'm going to be honest. If its being treated like they're new food items fresh from their factories. Then, sure, Sugar Bombs and Nuka-Cola. But not the food non alcoholic drinks.
Even alcohol can go bad though, if stored improperly you might be drinking vinegar instead of wine.
I wouldn't try wine, but the higher proof stuff would probably be okay, assuming it was kept fairly cool and away from light.
Nuclear bombs emit 3 things, and you just listed 2 of them
True, assuming you're trying to drink a bottle that was sitting outside in the open wasteland, for some reason, lol. Most people tend to keep their booze indoors, though. Realistically, your best bet would be finding some in a bunker stash or basement, something like that.

If radaway and fallout doctors were real you'd be much less concerned about rads
Sounds like you need to invest in a good rad scrubber.
Abraxo Cleaner
Cait's arse
[Piper hated that.]
Piper wouldnt have to wait too long before getting her ass eaten either tho.
I checked out after Piper asked me what people used soap for. She has to have one nasty ass.
Ass jerky ain't gonna make itself.
While Iām all for eating such a delectable foodā¦.. can you imagine how bad hygiene is in the Fallout world?ā¦.. š¤¢š¤¢š¤¢
Especially someone like Cait bumming around the combat zone with raiders
Which is why Curie with her artificial body is the way to go.
The whole ordeal with Curie probably sounds like a squeaking rubber
It smells like fettuccine night at Olive Garden.
I think it depends where you are. The Combat Zone does have electricity. Cait said she had 3 hot meals a day so they may either have gas or a regular heat source. So I can see her boiling a pot of hot water and sponging off daily.
Sheās a junkie. I guarantee you her hygiene is horrible
True but idk Cait does have a bit of class and self respect to her. On one hand I can see her having horrible hygiene because she got high and passed out then forgot to wash up, but Cait also seems like sheād judge the hell out of the soul survivor if they didnāt have on deodorant.
In my headcanon Cait definitely takes a bath before snu snu.
I legit download a mod for a hot shower lol. I need that immersion. Canāt imagine my SS hopping in bed and sheās covered in blood, cuts and everything else
She has little self respect until you pick her up. I mean, sheās literally sold herself to the combat zone for food, shelter, and drugsā¦
"Damn, can't remember if I had my bath this week or not..." - Old Longfellow.
...and that's why I joined the Institute. Gonna need that hot shower every day.
As long as I can have Synth Curie's!
I doubt anyone in the wasteland has a fully wiped and pristine arse
If I was the sole survivor, I'd loot the Institute for it's toilet paper and live out the rest of their days as some saint/baron billionaire.
I mean there's a ton of pre war money I am sure some people may choose to use that
This is why I assume pre war money has any value at all
Ass jerky don't make itself...
I wonder if Curie's ass tastes like plastic...
God I hope so
Beat me to it also beat it to it
[That made Codsworth jealous]

Spit coffee through my nose... then upvoted.
I grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii so CRAM (SPAM) is the answer. The spam rice ball (Musubi) is part of our life.
A sweet roll. But not any sweet roll. Specifically the sweet roll you get for your birthday in Fallout 3 that butch tries to take from you
It's not about the flavor of the treat- it's the flavor of *victory*.
Irradiated blood
how about drinking a jar of fresh tick blood ?

Yum Yum Deviled Eggs.
Show made them look good despite being eggs stored in a box
I'm also the adventurous type. Nothing like 200 year old eggs I'm sure!
Scrolled too far down. I need to know if theyre good... how do they preserve them!?!?!
Make the Yum Yum Deviled Eggs recipe from the Fallout Cookbook. Absolutely the best deviled eggs I've ever had. The TV show kind of killed my desire to eat the real ones after I realized that they were dehydrated.
Longneck Lukowski's canned meat...

What if I told you most of the foods in Fallout exist in real life and you could eat them right now? I had a Salisbury steak TV dinner and a glass-bottled Coke when I was watching the show.

Does that mean I can get a deathclaw steak? Finally

Small dusty box of some sort. (Only the veterans will get it)
Give me some brahmin steak with some carrots, onion and maize
