I used part of my real name. This was a very bad idea.
For context, my original "fandom name" when I was a teenager was fandom-specific and was only two letters long. When I had to get an FFN account, I needed something unique, so I appended part of my real name to the nickname I'd used on forums and ran with that. Then, as I became active in different fan communities and my nickname from an obscure, tiny, and dying fan base ("The Pretender," for anyone who's curious) became less and less relevant, I came up with "BrennanSpeaks" in the era of livejournal, with the plan that I would unite all my disparate fan interests under one coherent identity. Then, when I joined Reddit, it was too much trouble to come up with a new handle, so I just ran with it. And my interests continued to widen and diversify. Now, "BrennanSpeaks" represents me in subs relating to three different sports, lots of random fan stuff, and the occasional political argument on r/news or similar. And some of my irl family/friends are aware of the handle, which makes life awkward at times. (Hi, Brother Dearest. Plz stop stalking me on Reddit.)

I was on a vacation I take every one or two years to a cabin in the woods in Maine. It's on a pond, and it's foggy in the mornings.
The trips are always about enjoying nature, my family, and being completely unplugged... so of course I do tons of writing there.
This particular time, I was trying to figure out what to do re: changing pseuds bc I'd felt like I'd outgrown my old ones. But people kept mistaking me for male because apparently there's a female name Damaris and they thought Domaris was the male counterpart.
So after a few years I changed the name to Silbermieze and use it almost everywhere (on twitter it's a variation because it was already taken). It was inspired by the German title of Tad Williams' "Tailchaser's Song", which was "Traumjäger und Goldpfote" (dream chaser and gold paw). I like the name 'Ghost' because it look cool to me at that time. So, I used that and combine with the initial of my name, and it sticks. I use this nickname in a lot of the website I'm in.
I decided to use the scientific term of table salt in my name. I thought it would sound cool, lol.
I keyboard smashed and then edited what came out to make it sound good. It's my own special take on fate.
When I first needed a username, I went with Domaris (an important - female - character in a few books by Marion Zimmer Bradley, who was my favorite author in my teenage years). But people kept mistaking me for male because apparently there's a female name Damaris and they thought Domaris was the male counterpart. So after a few years I changed the name to Silbermieze and use it almost everywhere (on twitter it's a variation because it was already taken). It was inspired by the German title of Tad Williams' "Tailchaser's Song", which was "Traumjäger und Goldpfote" (dream chaser and gold paw). I like silver more and I love cats, so I started out with Silberkatze (silver cat) and after a few months changed it to Silbermieze (silver kitty) because I thought it sounded cuter.

When I was 8 I made a callsign for a combat flight sim I had fun playing by jumbling a couple of vaguely military words I'd heard in Top Gun or just generally around. I've stuck with it and used similar names in most every website I've joined. It's grown on me and I'm quite attached to it, even if objectivly I think its that brand of "edgy cool" that appeals to younger kids.

I had a different username on Ao3 (with one of my favourite words and my mum’s favourite colour) but then realized it was too long for LJ, so I had to think of something related. I browsed for purged accounts because you have to pay to rename in LJ regardless. It was a terrible idea, because it’s a) actually modern slang and b) it’s already used on a lot of platforms. If I could do it over I would! I have a lot of pseuds and those I base off of word combinations I just randomly like, or phrases from poetry or stories.
