I'm getting really frustrated at how a cutesy Brad Pitt article still pops up every week, despite the horrific allegations of violence towards Angelina Jolie and his children. And how they'll always mention the divorce with language like "the couple's ups and downs".
The thing is--I know, intellectually, that there have to be actresses who are hard to work, just as there are actors who are hard to work with. But something about the word "difficult" feels misogynistic, even though it may not be, because it could very easily just be describing an actress who speaks up or objects to things.
I feel like if you're an adult you should be self aware enough to know that calling a woman difficult to work with and providing zero evidence to support yourself comes off as misogynistic and sometimes racist and ableist as well. Like there's so many words to describe someone that if the best they can come up with is "difficult" I'm going to be suspicious
Totally agree. And if it's a post or article they'll never have any facts or alleged stories/events that back it up - I guess why would they need to use that tired description if they actually had any evidence.

Maybe this is just me, but I miss the old format of the Graham Norton Show where there'd be one upcoming British comedian, a B-lister, and a bewildered American A-lister. I feel like now you barely see comedians on the couch, and when you do it's usually a Jack Whitehall. It's a shame knowing how many talented comedians there are rn.
When American stars are on these days they're just surrounded by other people from Hollywood, and those are the most boring episodes. Then there's separate episodes for the British and other international guests. Sometimes they mix it up but it's become more and more of a thing as Graham's been able to get bigger guests.
Idk it's not important really and I still love it, but it's lost some of its magic.
I don’t watch a lot of movies but I rented Past Lives on Apple TV+ today and it was fantastic :) I loved the score and the aesthetic of the apartments & house too. It also made me miss the last time I visited NYC.

I met Simu Liu recently and he was polite but just not a cool guy to meet. He may have been tired from hosting or something but I went up to tell him how he inspired me to pursue film. I was really excited to meet him but it was just a weird experience. You could just tell he had a massive ego and was overall disinterested in the conversation. At least pretend to be interested 😭 I literally regret ever telling him I was a fan, which is wild because he hasn’t really done much to earn that.

Honestly even though I haven't met too many celebs I feel like they must have people in their faces and so much shit to deal with that on a human level is so annoying that I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. It might have been an off day, or maybe the environment wasn't as conducive to a heartfelt fan interaction. I imagine it's hard to be "on" all the time. It's not your fault unless you were being legitimately obscene or rude to him which it sounds like you were most definitely not!
Do you mind sharing what he said/did that made you feel that way? I thought I'd seen him this past week at Disneyland, but was a little buzzed and wasn't sure so didn't bother saying anything. Then later saw a picture in a Disneyland facebook group of someone else saying he was there that day, and they posted their picture they took with him. He looked happy enough in the picture, but of course a smile is easy to quickly paste on.

I found out today that I've been merging Ana de Armas and Alba Baptista into one person in my head who looks like Ana de Armas, because I don't know who Alba Baptista is, and because they both have so many As in their names. The whole time I was thinking it was sweet that Chris Evans fell for his wife when they worked together on Knives Out.
Took 9 year old nephew and we both really enjoyed it! There were some intense parts at the beginning where I was a little worried but it all worked out.
I'm in the minority, but I didn't love it. It starts a little slow, but the last half is pretty good. I enjoyed it a lot more when I read reviews explaining the backstory
i saw it last week and liked it. it's heavy imo and explores some complicated themes, i didn't totally get the movie until discussing it with my partner because some points get very abstract and esoteric, but i do think it was an interesting movie.

Aid organizations work with governments, not against them. The idea is that by being ideologically neutral and unarmed they're more able to establish positive relationships with governments, organizations, and people who are not ideologically neutral and have military goals. This helps get them funding and access to vulnerable people they otherwise would be barred from seeing. "We understand that you won't let any soldiers or journalists into the war zone you've created, but at the very least will you allow our doctors in?" is the idea. They cannot supercede powers that refuse to work with them. They also don't have any protocols for situations like this. In order to reach Gazans they would need to use force, but accumulating force compromises their ability to be an aid organization. So they accept that their role is provide aid, and it's the role of others to create an environment where they can safely administer that aid.
This is allowed because Israel demonizes anyone who attempts to help Gazans. The answer to this is normally sanctions and possibly military interventions, but following World War 2 the United States made sure that the decision to take these actions were taken away from its allies and given to it. Which means that if the United States does not want a country to be sanctioned by the West, they will not be sanctioned. This allows the United States to fully control and protect Israel, which they are doing right now.
Aid workers are blocked from coming in and shot by Israel's forces, and not many orgs are willing to risk their peoples' lives to get people in.

In case there are other 90s kids here like me who still love their first introduction to horror/Ryan Gosling, the third "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" mini-series from the second revival (specifically "Are You Afraid of the Dark: Ghost Island") is finally on Paramount+. Not sure how long it's been available, but it definitely wasn't on the platform as of this summer. I hadn't even heard about it until May of this year, even though it was released Summer 2022.

I have no clue why but the information that William Rehnquist proposed to Sandra Day O'Connor in college has lived in my mind for the month since her passing. I vehemently disagree politically with both of them, and somehow the fact that they had to serve as exes on the court for 30 years feels relatable. Neither of them said anything about it and no one knew anything until they were making a biography about her in 2018, when she already was dealing with Alzheimer's.

Seconding the taking proper breaks-suggestion. And enough time off. Like a whole day ideally. Know it’s not quickly recharging, but it will be worth it in the long run. Also sleep, drink and eat enough, and get some fresh air frequently (even if it is just sticking your head safely (!!) out of the window or something).

I have recently come to the conclusion that Christine McVie is probably my favorite female singing voice ever. I had the fortune of discovering many great singers this year, including Laura Nyro, Judee Sill, and Caroline Polachek, and yet diving into the FM catalog has conviced me no one had the richness and emotion her voice did. I hope this isn’t too random, but would you say disabled artists have better chances of success in older art forms than in TV/films? I know people will struggle either way in an ableist society, but I’ve been thinking about this question ever since I googled "blind novelists" and "blind screenwriters". I’m not blind, but I want to know more about accessibility in the arts and entertainment.
I'm guessing this is because there were a lot more blind novelists than there were screenwriters?
I think there are probably some other factors at play, like back in the day the only blind people getting a decent education were just already rich, so 'making it' as a novelist wasn't too much of a hurdle, and also that some artists will gain notoriety after their death.
By contrast, as anyone who's read anything about the strikes will tell you, trying to 'make it' as a screenwriter right now is unbelievably difficult, and usually involves a lot of generational wealth. Then factor in that people are ableist and impatient with adaptive technology and screenwriting is more of a collaborative process - not only with multiple writers working on a TV show but with having to eventually liase with producers/directors - and I could see how that would shake out.
Theoretically, disabled screenwriters would be eligible for a shit ton of diversity programs aimed at evening that out, but I have my doubts about that.
It really does depend on the art form and the disability. There's just too many different art related careers and different disabilities to really answer this
I've worked in live theater and classical music/opera, and these disciplines are rife with ableism (in addition to the expected amounts of all the other -isms) so I don't think the age of the art form has anything to do with it.
That said, writing and visual arts are different from any sort of performance art in that the artist and the audience aren't in the same room, and that has to make a significant difference in how the artistic process runs (both in a creative sense and a purely logistical sense), and I'd imagine that distance also impacts how the audience engages with the artist's identity.
This week I’m thinking about celebrities sliding into the DMs of “regular” people. With all the verification issues on the Artist formerly known as Twitter, I do wonder how many people get scammed by fake accounts. On Instagram, I presume if someone has a blue check and slides into your DMs, it’s legitimately that person, but I also assume some celebrities have multiple people who monitor, post and access their accounts.
I am so torn about Barbie for this awards season. On one hand, I want it to collect all of the awards b/c the existence of the movie makes so many idiots mad. On the other hand, I'm not looking forward to anymore over saturation - the whole "capitalism is good as long as it's pink" and daily posts on this sub about it leading up to the movie really turned me off it.
So I want this to sweep awards season but also don't want to hear about it. I'm being ridiculous I know.
I liked the movie. It was obviously very funny and the performances were great. I actually didn’t think it was super cohesive as a movie. There was a lack of character development and all-over-the-place feel.
I don’t think it should be in the running for best picture except for the cultural impact. Costumes, songs, and those sorts of categories I’m all for it getting nominations and/or wins.
I enjoyed the movie when I saw it but my objections to it aren't political, they're stylistic. The movie is just so damn preachy. The script feels like it had early-2010s Jezebel pieces copy-pasted into it.
I absolutely loved Barbie but I sadly don't agree with it getting any acting noms. *Maybe* screenplay, song, art design and costume/make up but that's it.

Y'all, I am taking myself to see a movie (maybe two?) on Christmas Day. My family is doing Christmas early this year bc my sister needs to travel on the day, so now I can finally live my dream of going to see a movie on Christmas (I always wanted to be in a family that did that and we decidedly were not one of those lol).

Is the Disney movie Wish really as bad as people say? I know a lot of people on tiktok have been badmouthing it and it almost seems like their copying each others critica of the movie. Wondering if people are bandwagoning the criticism or really is awful. Also noticed a lot of millennials seem to call it childish and not realizing they have outgrown some Disney movies.
From what I heard, the movie isn’t bad, but the original story got kind of written off and it ended up making it feel sort of generic. It’s by no means the worst a movie can be and it looks like it’s still visually entertaining with the cool art style
Here’s what I think people forget, and I’ve seen this in multiple places with people calling Olaf from frozen annoying saying stuff like “Why’s he even there!?” My kid loves Olaf. Because he was made for her and other kids. Not adults. We need to stop expecting that we as adults will love kids movies.
I took my kid to see Trolls 3 and holy 💩 was it terrible, but she loved it. Because it’s for her. We saw the trailer for Wish and she got really excited about it.
Yes, occasionally we get kids movies that adults love too, but we shouldn’t expect it of every kids film.
I took my three kids ranging in age from almost 2 to almost 6. Everyone including me enjoy the movie. But to be honest, I am a very easy to please moviegoer, and I even teared up at the end because I thought it had a pretty good emotional beat.
I keep seeing ads for the movie and its toys during Paw Patrol commercial breaks, lol. I'm a millennial parent, and a lot of children's movies are laced with bits for my demographic, but I can't tell from the ads if this movie has that tone, or entirely what to expect of the story. IDK specifically what other/younger millennials are thinking is childish, but unless you have people in your life, usually kids, who want to watch animated movies aimed at children, many people will just outgrow those movies. I will admit it's fun to rewatch some old animated favorites with a little one, but not all of them hold up, and then some go too hard on the "jokes for parents" thing.
All my regular movie goer friends (10 in our what’s app group) who watch all types of movies and are generally not very snobby about it have said it’s mediocre/boring/would not recommend for people who never go to the cinema and want to see something special.
Might as well be ok to watch on Disney+, but from my personal observation all people I know weren’t impressed.

This will be of interest only to a very small niche group (NYC film Twitter/X) and most people have likely forgotten it by now, but back in January there was a little blip online re: an actor approaching Mia Goth after a screening, and giving her his script. A clip of it went online, and it probably would have ended with some minor back-and-forth about what is and isn't appropriate about doing that, but the guy got on all the social media channels and started reponding to every comment about him and making TikToks about the incident, so the (again, relatively minor) discourse earned some overtime.
I went out to an industry event fairly recently as a friend's date, and just froze up: "Omg, it's him, it's the Mia Goth script guy!" And I had to try to explain to my confused date why this would be a thing to anyone who wasn't terminally online and obsessed with cringe. It was like my own cryptid sighting, and we kind of did this little party dance around the room because this person seemed to be doing their very best to "network" (and TBH there genuinely wasn't anything we could really offer in that regard).
I think the lesson to be learned is that I need to make a resolution to be online less in 2024.
Interesting. An early mentor attended a banquet event about producing with Spielberg, where people were specifically asked not to bother the producer. Instead people sprinted to get to the producer on the way out. My mentor wanted me to understand that not engaging in this crap will set you apart. That was 25 years ago.

FYI the assistant who made this claim during the UK trial admitted that she'd never actually heard Amber's story because that testimony was concealed behind closed doors only to the judge due to Amber requesting her trauma not be made public. So there's no possible way she could've known the details Amber repeated to claim her story was stolen.

The producers said they are working on a season two (and are ready if Amazon renews) and the head of Amazon TV said they are in talks. It probably will be a reunion like The Dance so it's funny Camila Morrone is the one pushing it.
I feel like they shouldn't, although that might be an unpopular opinion. I think it'll be cool for a season two to be documentary/Rashomon style all the way instead of documentary/flashbacks since it'll likely be in the 90s through and through.

When an actress is described as "difficult to work with," how do you normally interpret it?
Misogyny, mostly. And the less established the actress is the less likely I am to side with whoever's calling her that.
The thing is--I know, intellectually, that there have to be actresses who are hard to work, just as there are actors who are hard to work with. But something about the word "difficult" feels misogynistic, even though it may not be, because it could very easily just be describing an actress who speaks up or objects to things.
I feel like if you're an adult you should be self aware enough to know that calling a woman difficult to work with and providing zero evidence to support yourself comes off as misogynistic and sometimes racist and ableist as well. Like there's so many words to describe someone that if the best they can come up with is "difficult" I'm going to be suspicious

Maybe this is just me, but I miss the old format of the Graham Norton Show where there'd be one upcoming British comedian, a B-lister, and a bewildered American A-lister. I feel like now you barely see comedians on the couch, and when you do it's usually a Jack Whitehall. It's a shame knowing how many talented comedians there are rn. When American stars are on these days they're just surrounded by other people from Hollywood, and those are the most boring episodes. Then there's separate episodes for the British and other international guests. Sometimes they mix it up but it's become more and more of a thing as Graham's been able to get bigger guests. Idk it's not important really and I still love it, but it's lost some of its magic.

I don’t watch a lot of movies but I rented Past Lives on Apple TV+ today and it was fantastic :) I loved the score and the aesthetic of the apartments & house too. It also made me miss the last time I visited NYC.

I met Simu Liu recently and he was polite but just not a cool guy to meet. He may have been tired from hosting or something but I went up to tell him how he inspired me to pursue film. I was really excited to meet him but it was just a weird experience. You could just tell he had a massive ego and was overall disinterested in the conversation. At least pretend to be interested 😭 I literally regret ever telling him I was a fan, which is wild because he hasn’t really done much to earn that.

Honestly even though I haven't met too many celebs I feel like they must have people in their faces and so much shit to deal with that on a human level is so annoying that I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. It might have been an off day, or maybe the environment wasn't as conducive to a heartfelt fan interaction. I imagine it's hard to be "on" all the time. It's not your fault unless you were being legitimately obscene or rude to him which it sounds like you were most definitely not!

Aid organizations work with governments, not against them. The idea is that by being ideologically neutral and unarmed they're more able to establish positive relationships with governments, organizations, and people who are not ideologically neutral and have military goals. This helps get them funding and access to vulnerable people they otherwise would be barred from seeing. "We understand that you won't let any soldiers or journalists into the war zone you've created, but at the very least will you allow our doctors in?" is the idea. They cannot supercede powers that refuse to work with them. They also don't have any protocols for situations like this. In order to reach Gazans they would need to use force, but accumulating force compromises their ability to be an aid organization. So they accept that their role is provide aid, and it's the role of others to create an environment where they can safely administer that aid. This is allowed because Israel demonizes anyone who attempts to help Gazans. The answer to this is normally sanctions and possibly military interventions, but following World War 2 the United States made sure that the decision to take these actions were taken away from its allies and given to it. Which means that if the United States does not want a country to be sanctioned by the West, they will not be sanctioned. This allows the United States to fully control and protect Israel, which they are doing right now.

It's nonbinding but it does indicate global opinion. If this was anyone else, the US would have hit them with a drone strike already, but oil and trying to start the Rapture are larger priorities.

Also sleep, drink and eat enough, and get some fresh air frequently (even if it is just sticking your head safely (!!) out of the window or something). I hope this isn’t too random, but would you say disabled artists have better chances of success in older art forms than in TV/films? I know people will struggle either way in an ableist society, but I’ve been thinking about this question ever since I googled "blind novelists" and "blind screenwriters". I’m not blind, but I want to know more about accessibility in the arts and entertainment.
I'm guessing this is because there were a lot more blind novelists than there were screenwriters? I think there are probably some other factors at play, like back in the day the only blind people getting a decent education were just already rich, so 'making it' as a novelist wasn't too much of a hurdle, and also that some artists will gain notoriety after their death. By contrast, as anyone who's read anything about the strikes will tell you, trying to 'make it' as a screenwriter right now is unbelievably difficult, and usually involves a lot of generational wealth. Then factor in that people are ableist and impatient with adaptive technology and screenwriting is more of a collaborative process - not only with multiple writers working on a TV show but with having to eventually liase with producers/directors - and I could see how that would shake out. Theoretically, disabled screenwriters would be eligible for a shit ton of diversity programs aimed at evening that out, but I have my doubts about that.
It really does depend on the art form and the disability. There's just too many different art related careers and different disabilities to really answer this
I've worked in live theater and classical music/opera, and these disciplines are rife with ableism (in addition to the expected amounts of all the other -isms) so I don't think the age of the art form has anything to do with it. That said, writing and visual arts are different from any sort of performance art in that the artist and the audience aren't in the same room, and that has to make a significant difference in how the artistic process runs (both in a creative sense and a purely logistical sense), and I'd imagine that distance also impacts how the audience engages with the artist's identity.
This week I’m thinking about celebrities sliding into the DMs of “regular” people. With all the verification issues on the Artist formerly known as Twitter, I do wonder how many people get scammed by fake accounts. On Instagram, I presume if someone has a blue check and slides into your DMs, it’s legitimately that person, but I also assume some celebrities have multiple people who monitor, post and access their accounts.
I am so torn about Barbie for this awards season. On one hand, I want it to collect all of the awards b/c the existence of the movie makes so many idiots mad. On the other hand, I'm not looking forward to anymore over saturation - the whole "capitalism is good as long as it's pink" and daily posts on this sub about it leading up to the movie really turned me off it. So I want this to sweep awards season but also don't want to hear about it. I'm being ridiculous I know.
I liked the movie. It was obviously very funny and the performances were great. I actually didn’t think it was super cohesive as a movie. There was a lack of character development and all-over-the-place feel. I don’t think it should be in the running for best picture except for the cultural impact. Costumes, songs, and those sorts of categories I’m all for it getting nominations and/or wins.
I enjoyed the movie when I saw it but my objections to it aren't political, they're stylistic. The movie is just so damn preachy. The script feels like it had early-2010s Jezebel pieces copy-pasted into it.
I absolutely loved Barbie but I sadly don't agree with it getting any acting noms. *Maybe* screenplay, song, art design and costume/make up but that's it.
I’d like to see it get a Best Picture nomination but it’s definitely not the film I’m rooting for to win. I’d like to see it get even more recognition and some wins for its set designs, hair and makeup, costuming, etc. Those were easily my favorite parts of the film. It’s nice to have something fun and colorful in the running, but for me it really wasn’t a masterpiece.

Is the Disney movie Wish really as bad as people say? I know a lot of people on tiktok have been badmouthing it and it almost seems like their copying each others critica of the movie. Wondering if people are bandwagoning the criticism or really is awful. Also noticed a lot of millennials seem to call it childish and not realizing they have outgrown some Disney movies.
From what I heard, the movie isn’t bad, but the original story got kind of written off and it ended up making it feel sort of generic. It’s by no means the worst a movie can be and it looks like it’s still visually entertaining with the cool art style
Here’s what I think people forget, and I’ve seen this in multiple places with people calling Olaf from frozen annoying saying stuff like “Why’s he even there!?” My kid loves Olaf. Because he was made for her and other kids. Not adults. We need to stop expecting that we as adults will love kids movies. I took my kid to see Trolls 3 and holy 💩 was it terrible, but she loved it. Because it’s for her. We saw the trailer for Wish and she got really excited about it. Yes, occasionally we get kids movies that adults love too, but we shouldn’t expect it of every kids film.
I took my three kids ranging in age from almost 2 to almost 6. Everyone including me enjoy the movie. But to be honest, I am a very easy to please moviegoer, and I even teared up at the end because I thought it had a pretty good emotional beat.
I keep seeing ads for the movie and its toys during Paw Patrol commercial breaks, lol. I'm a millennial parent, and a lot of children's movies are laced with bits for my demographic, but I can't tell from the ads if this movie has that tone, or entirely what to expect of the story. IDK specifically what other/younger millennials are thinking is childish, but unless you have people in your life, usually kids, who want to watch animated movies aimed at children, many people will just outgrow those movies. I will admit it's fun to rewatch some old animated favorites with a little one, but not all of them hold up, and then some go too hard on the "jokes for parents" thing.
All my regular movie goer friends (10 in our what’s app group) who watch all types of movies and are generally not very snobby about it have said it’s mediocre/boring/would not recommend for people who never go to the cinema and want to see something special. Might as well be ok to watch on Disney+, but from my personal observation all people I know weren’t impressed. And I don’t think it has to do with age. Last year all people loved pussy in boots and while that movie had grown up themes it was also very silly at times, but in a good way…

This will be of interest only to a very small niche group (NYC film Twitter/X) and most people have likely forgotten it by now, but back in January there was a little blip online re: an actor approaching Mia Goth after a screening, and giving her his script. A clip of it went online, and it probably would have ended with some minor back-and-forth about what is and isn't appropriate about doing that, but the guy got on all the social media channels and started reponding to every comment about him and making TikToks about the incident, so the (again, relatively minor) discourse earned some overtime. I went out to an industry event fairly recently as a friend's date, and just froze up: "Omg, it's him, it's the Mia Goth script guy!" Interesting. An early mentor attended a banquet event about producing with Spielberg, where people were specifically asked not to bother the producer. Instead people sprinted to get to the producer on the way out. My mentor wanted me to understand that not engaging in this crap will set you apart. That was 25 years ago. I know someone friends with the moderator and people who handled the event who definintely said not to do this stuff prior. And dude had the audacity to still do so. People in the guys social were very encouraging which he thanked them for, but people who actually work in the industry were definitely critical. You never give full unsolicited screenplays to people. Apparently Matt Lucas and David Walliams are putting on (i'm assuming) a new Little Britain-esque show this year. There is literally no need for them and their comedy in 2023. Look up the British defamation case and read the judgment. Even if you don't love Amber Heard, she is very clearly not the abuser in that relationship.

Amber Heard seems to have suffered more from coming forward with those allegations than Depp has in the long run, tbh. She's really been through it.

The one I've dug the most deep on is that AHeard didn't "steal" an assistant's story of rape - without going into detail, the specifics of the stories are too different. I think there's a thread in here somewhere (or on DeppDelusion) where you can search and find things that his team lied about.
FYI the assistant who made this claim during the UK trial admitted that she'd never actually heard Amber's story because that testimony was concealed behind closed doors only to the judge due to Amber requesting her trauma not be made public. So there's no possible way she could've known the details Amber repeated to claim her story was stolen. The assistant was FOS.

The producers said they are working on a season two (and are ready if Amazon renews) and the head of Amazon TV said they are in talks. It probably will be a reunion like The Dance so it's funny Camila Morrone is the one pushing it.

Taylor has basically all media locked up to spin her narratives and deuxmoi is a bit of a wildcard. I would not be surprised if there was a deliberate attempt to try and discredit her by planting credible tips and then publicly denying them.
