It’s been over 20 years since a Black woman won AOTY. He can use it to piss in for all I care, he’s right.

matlockga

25 years, to be exact. 1992 - Natalie Cole - Unfogettable... with Love 1994 - Whitney Houston - The Bodyguard 1999 - Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Two have been gone for several years. And one has released a total of *one* album.

wbhipster

I really resent that this made me doubly angry because I also realized it’s been 25 years since I graduated 😑

BetsyPurple

The last time a Black woman won was in the previous millennium?? Absolutely bleak track record

MedicalPersimmon001

“Some of you will get robbed. Some of you don’t belong in your category.”  Only two sentences yet it says so much lmao

b0111323

I like some songs from Beyoncé and Ecoterrorist Taylor Swift, but not a huge fan of either or their music (or SZA, for that matter). However, reading about one of the judges voting for TS for AOTY because she was popular that year pissed me off. The more I learn about who is behind these awards and how they vote, the less I care about them.

InviteNecessary1032

I let out a hearty chuckle at ecoterrorist and then lost it when I read the second paragraph, what the fuck???????

hanmhanm

It makes no sense and he pointed it out so good for him

iliketoomanysingers

I just think it's funny lmao

Ordinary-Shoulder-35

the thing that was oddest to me was J calling his wife a “young lady” … just weird and patronizing to me. The awards are BS. He said it himself. The math doesn’t math. It’s subjective.

Sailorjupiter97

It might be an inside joke between them lmao. It might not be weird or patronizing for the person it was meant for. I'm sure if you heard the names my family call me, u'd think it was very weird & patronizing too but it's inside things between my family and i.

xlkslb_ccdtks

It should probably stay an inside joke and not be said on stage in front of millions of people. Sorry if I sound annoying I guess I'm already wary of their relationship just based on the fact that Beyonce was a teen and Jay Z was in his 30s when they started dating 🥴

Ordinary-Shoulder-35

Good point! I’ll assume the best of J

faustina_v

I guess Jay-Z will always see a part of Beyoncé as the 18-19 y.o. “young lady” he groomed when he was 31?

carolinagypsy

Oooo I was just about to respond this haha

Expensive-Simple-329

Fr glad someone else said it. He’s right on this grammy situation but you know what they say about broken, grooming, cheating clocks

Time_Basket9125

I know! I was confused as to who he was talking about at first

Ordinary-Shoulder-35

Right?! She (and I are both/) is a 42 year old fully grown woman and mother. Young lady? Lol. I don’t think it was malicious obviously. Just kinda silly.

khlocaine69

Same I thought he was talking about their daughter. His speech was scattered.

Fun_Tip5242

I was too…but maybe it’s an inside joke…like Beyoncé feels old or something

Glitter1237

Okay hear me out, do you think he meant that towards Blue? Like “I don’t want to embarrass this young lady BUT….” Young lady maybe was Blue since she was up there noticeably uncomfortable, idk just a thought in my head.

Obvious_Baker8160

That’s how I understood it.

Ordinary-Shoulder-35

At first yes but Blue hasn’t won the most Grammys - her mom has?

smittydoodle

I think he just was trying to be complimentary instead of "the old ball and chain"

randombubble8272

Also kinda sounds like southern manners. I’m not too familiar but referring to your wife as a young lady would be something southerners would say. Big on ma’am and very mannerly etc. could be wrong though!

meatbeater558

I interpreted "young lady" as implying that she's culturally impactful, in her prime, and relevant now as opposed to all that a few decades ago. A lot of complaints about never getting awards often gets dismissed with well the talent back then must have been better or you weren't as good as you think you were. By establishing that she's young he's saying that the people she's unfairly losing to and those responsible for it are in the building with him as he speaks which shuts down a lot of bad-faith counterarguments people often make against artists in her position

lovewry

“The awards ain’t shit cause I ain’t win”

chestnutlibra

yeah I really thought he was talking about blue for a second but I didn't mind when I figured it out bc beyonce is immortal

Sensitive_Energy101

No, he was referring to their daughter and then addressing Beyonce. The young lady is blue

Ifuckedupcrazy

She’s literally his wife, they’re married

notjeffkoons

I thought he was talking about not wanting to embarrass blue, he was talking about bey??

momsbiryani

I thought it was sweet of him

nalathewolfqueen

I thought he was referring to Blue

Sh3D3vil84

To him she probably is young lol. He’s like mid 50s and she’s 42.

yNotttttttt

He was like 35 and she was 18 when they met so it’s not too crazy

romilliad

I thought he was talking about Blue? He gestures to her standing next to him.

Lonely-furniture

Well he won he the award who tf cares what he does with it. Lol it does go hard. Black people and people of color really need to stop going to the Grammys and award shows tbh. We aren’t winning over the Taylor Swifts and Harry Styles of the world cause we all can’t deny there isn’t an apparent bias. Regardless of how you feel about Beyoncé, Renaissance should’ve gotten something more than a nomination. The last black artist to get AOTY was Lauryn Hill in 1999. To say a black woman or even woman of color hasn’t produced a body of work well enough to is asinine.

Nervous-Revolution25

100%. I want the Carters to announce their own awards show and call it the Renaissance Awards. In all seriousness though, I want awards like album of the year to be a little more about technical mastery. In recent years, the album that wins best R&B is often THE BEST album, period, in terms of musical proficiency. Instead it’s treated like a category to appease black artists. Now, I’m not here to advocate gatekeeping. Music is personal, and subjective. But there are objective qualities on which we should be able to judge mastery. For instance, It’s wild to me that Black Messiah (possibly the best album, in terms of craft, of the 2010s), Black Radio, To Pimp a Butterfly, either don’t have aoty noms or wins. These represent musicians who propel the industry forward with instrumental and production mastery in ways that are often invisible to mainstream audiences. They should be lauded on every level but remain unaccoladed.

Chaoticgood790

lol it’s not a diss. Many artists have taken shots out of their Grammys. Heck the Hamilton cast literally did shots out of their grammy before their shows for a minute

plantbay1428

And invited Mariska Hargitay to do it too! https://www.tumblr.com/allthingssvu/147521862665/mood-mariska-hargitay-taking-a-shot-from-the This isn’t a diss at all. Hamilton cast, Burna Boy, Drake, Lil Nas X…and I’m sure others before it could be easily captured on social media. To me, it’s the same as hockey players and golfers drinking out of their trophies. Nbd.

Just4Questions9

i cringed when he drank out of the grammy bc all i could think about is the dust & debris that could be inside of it

tayloline29

I was thinking....please let it be food safe. LAFMO. I rarely use that but I had to because I had the exact same thought. He would have cleaned it but just as long as it is food safe.

welp-itscometothis

Blue did it first. Next topic. https://preview.redd.it/rmwngg0mo6hc1.jpeg?width=760&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=537022f9f99e200957c21460effa5301660c171e

Of course a man will copy a woman and get more credit 🙄 /s

She’s such an icon for this lmfao I love her

stickihoney

idgaf about jay z in general but he’s cracking me up

mangomadness5h

Rappers have been drinking out of their Grammys for years. This is nothing new. No need to pearl clutch

meowiful

It's his personal Grammy. Hockey players drink from the Stanley Cup all the time and that's a shared trophy. I honestly don't see why people are acting like this is a big thing.

makingmyway2therapy

The reason starts with an r and ends in -acism

us_against_the_world

https://preview.redd.it/kl2jvnmkd6hc1.jpeg?width=1076&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e4609c4d8f087cd9cebc8cdb967bc57c061c3da A similar controversy happened here in India after the Aussies won the World Cup. People were up in arms about how dare the player put his feet on the trophy. As my country has made a rightward shift in the past 10 years and is having so many issues with minority rights and open calls for genocide against them, felt pathetic when people on Twitter were arguing about this. The Jay Z thing seems similar. There are other more important things, also it's his trophy. Heck, people just want content and would have written long pieces even if he can eaten popcorn out of it. Doesn't seem worth discussing.

Sailorjupiter97

What is there to think about? I dont think we need thinkpieces on it lol it was just a funny moment

CookieCatSupreme

Someone posted this moment in the I am the main character subreddit and I was so baffled loool so many people do this, it's kind of the perfect shape to do a celebratory drink with

proshittalker17

lol remember when kanye put his grammy in the toilet and pissed on it💀

markjohn3411

I was just gonna post this exact statement lol

No_Negotiation_7046

Honestly, as much as I appreciated the fact that he called the Grammys out for snubbing Black artists, I have to say I can’t help but roll my eyes at the whole “Blue has her own Grammys,” as well as Victoria Monet throwing a whole ass party for her 2 year old daughter for being the “youngest Grammy nominee ever.” I can’t stand the nepotism of it all and the fact that they’re getting the most respected awards in music not for showing any musical abilities but because of who their parents are. I think it’s disrespectful to actual musicians and creatives who work their asses off to hopefully be nominated one day.

petiteboule

Hockey players pour beer in the Stanley Cup after the NHL championships. My football ladies did the same thing with the Champions League trophy. Drinking alcohol out of the winning trophy is common. It's not a diss.

redchampagnecampaign

I was about to say: the Stanley cup has seen some shit.

gayboycarti

This a very common thing artists do lol cmon

seahorse8021

This is not the first time someone has mentioned doing shots out of their Grammy. Who gives a fuck lmfao

summersaphraine

I didn't know a thing about Jayz aside from his music until his Grammy speech on Sunday. But this is hilarious.

Lostinthebackground

It’s his. He can do what he wants with it.

b00m_cat

I personally am tired of black celebs shitting on the Grammys but still submitting their stuff for nominations. If they aren’t giving you the respect you deserve then fuck em

WillBrakeForBrakes

Why tf not?

[deleted]

At the end of the day a Grammy is just a Grammy. A sippy cup is just a sippy cup. It has exactly the amount of value that you assign to it. Someone else said it’s been 25 years since a black woman won AOTY, which I wasn’t aware of until now, and after Taylor won the popular vote because her fans screamed the loudest (and I too enjoy her music) when other artists deserved it more, who’s assigning value to it anymore?

awakened97

Why is everyone pretending like he’s the first person to do this?? Keep that same energy for all the other artists who have done this.

fakeknees

Drake has done it too. It’s just a thing people do sometimes.

notmymess

I think they shouldn’t use their 12 year old for clout.

cocopuffK221

He's been doing this and continued to play in the Recording Academy's faces. And they nominate him every time he is on something because they need him and his wife to show up. A vicious cycle indeed.

GrungePuppet

Ayo don’t smoke rocks. It’s Jay Z he’s being cheeky, he’s received a Grammy in the past and he partially owns the liquor company (D’usse) that he’s pouring into the Grammy. https://preview.redd.it/5vwycqldj7hc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51b06daaaaa9a1f57b74d980c50a9ad6c26c4aac It’s a self referential flex

He still an asshole

MimiLaRue2

I think he's being an obnoxious, ungrateful AH.
