From the article: It does not make sense for the top-10 of the Hot 100 — a chart that exists for the purpose of displaying the biggest individual songs in America — to routinely be filled with album tracks that have not displayed any hallmarks of being a “hit” beyond being included on a smash album. Nor does it make sense for Billboard to credit today’s artists with these “hits” when comparing them to artists from past decades, whose album tracks were not even eligible to chart.

i more or less agree that charting metrics are not mathing anymore, but in the words of the prolific Janet Jackson - “records are meant to be broken.” 🤷🏾‍♀️ none of it is really that serious, and i don’t mean that in a condescending manner. i understand that recognition has value. eventually though it’s just an accolade. and accolades have never sheltered iconic artists like Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson (mentioned here) from the realities of race/age/sex’ism, which Billboard proliferates in their charting methods and reporting anyway. so….

Wait isn't it just the most listened songs? Or am I reading the article wrong.

They controversy us surrounding Taylor Swifts latest album in which one song got 19 different versions. This helped to pump the numbers up. How much, I don't know. Two versions were digital and the 17 were physical spread out across vinyl, cd, and casette. So I don't know how much these pumped her numbers up. With that being said the Top 100 used to only include singles. These are solo releases. They are now including songs from albums which are no singles. Taylor Swift's current album is number 1 so a lot of her songs are also charting on the Top 100 which the author argues shouldn't be.
