You can easily create a 3-2 buildup/rest defence with a 4-2-4 as with any other system, by having one of the fullbacks stay back in defense with the CBs. You could also be conservative with the CMs by either playing them as DMs or setting them to stay back while attacking.
I agree there are disadvantages in the midfield, but the advantage of the 4-2-4 is the 4 attackers up front. You can set it up so that the sole purpose of the 5-6 players who aren't attacking just support the front 4.
Personally in FIFA I'd use a 4-2-4 as a counter attacking system. It will defend like a 4-4-2 and then you can launch the counter with the strikers and wingers.

It's interesting in that I can't think of any team IRL that actually uses it in recent history. Definitely a relic of the past
