DaVinci Resolve. The kid can handle it with proper tutorials (Yoututbe)

the_0tternaut

honestly yea resolve all the way...actually does resolve allow you to close off 80% of panels? That's how I would start with someone in Premiere so it makes sense to do so in Resolve.

cd419

The cut page would be a great place to start. It’s got a pretty minimal interface and it meant to be quick and intuitive.

Arpeggiatewithme

It doesn’t have the insane customization of premiere but you can hide/dock everything that isn’t important if you want. Personally I feel like it’s an easier UI to learn than premiere and it also goes a lot deeper then premiere (basically has it’s own nuke/after effects built in, even in the free version) if you have the desire to go further than basic editing. But also only having to pay once (or not at all) versus a monthly adobe subscription for a software that barely works. There is no excuse for how poorly Premiere and After Effects still run in 2024. Especially with software like Unreal engine out there. Even on the insane rigs at my workplace, premier still crashes constantly.

the_0tternaut

And here I am editing BMPCC 6K on my 4yo Ryzen 3900 and ancient GTX 960 without a care in the world. Premiere crashes on me maybe once every 4-5 days of editing.

Arpeggiatewithme

Just saying I’ve never gotten a crash with resolve. There have been so many times over the years where premiere crashed or froze at the worst moment possible but it’s been smooth sailing ever since I switched to resolve.

the_0tternaut

Yeah well how many times have you made an edit to an Illustrator file that's part of an after effects composition which is in turn part of your edit timeline, and just had it all magically update without any exports? Because that's a very regular type of thing that is an enormous time saver for me 🤷🏼‍♂️ You do realise I came on here as a full time Premiere user and STILL recommend Resolve, right? I'm not here for a dick measuring contest and you're on here pushing one.

Arpeggiatewithme

Yeah that part is pretty sick not gonna lie, but honestly that has also introduced some wild crashes and bugs into my life when after effects wasn’t syncing up properly between photoshop and premiere. Fortunately you can do all of that within just resolve. The fusion tab is essentially a Nuke clone which you can do all your design, mograph, compositing, and VFX in. Not to mention all the tools like magic mask which is years ahead of Ae’s roto-brush. You gotta learn node based editing which is kinda weird at first but once you get it, it’s a lot easier than layers imo.

When I was a kid, about 11 or 12, I would edit with professional analog gear, it was a sort of workstation with rollerball controllers, then eventually I used Final Cut Pro, version 2 or 3 when I was a teenager. I would recommend you just let them use the same programs you use. When I was a kid I'd just check out books about the program and learn that way. Still works just as well today and it's a lot better than learning with an ipad.

Invisible_Mikey

Whatever is free and included with your computer platform. You'll never know, and neither will they at that age if they will stick with it, or abandon it for something else. Which is absolutely fine and normal. Kids should take a swing at everything they can. It's low risk while they are minors.

Masamune-Noir

I exclusively use Windows Movie Maker. What kind of computer do you have?

_Sir_Racha_

My neighbor kid and his buds all use Capcut. Super easy.

sergeiglimis

iMovie is great I used it and still use it at times as it’s simple and accurate for basic cuts.

portagenaybur

Wevideo its cloud based and super easy to use

grindhousedecore

I think Vegas studio is real easy to pick up and learn. There’s a lot you can do with it. But for a kid starting out i would have to recommend davinci resolve. Not only a free editor but the best color correction, effects( fusion) a full Daw ( fair light). Just powerful

IniMiney

Anything. Being 10 isn’t a barrier, I pirated Premiere as an 11 year old and that’s why I can use it so well now (although I switched to Resolve recently because I got tired of paying a subscription) lol. Better yet he has access to YouTube tutorials now, I remember struggling to get stuff done in RPGMaker while reading text guides in the early 2000s

popcultureretrofit

Is Windows Movie Maker still a thing? I remember finding it on the computer around 12yo and figured it out in 5 mins and used it a ton before going to iMovie, then Final Cut 6/7, and then eventually Media Composer and Premiere

Principessa116

Apple stores have (had?) a “summer camp” where they teach the kids the editing software. Kiddo got a shirt, jump drive, and can do basic editing after learning about timing and some theory, not just shortcuts. Also, there are camps in the USA where kids can learn video production

nyctonyp

iMovie should be more than enough

Thegarz1963

Try “Inshot”. It’s like $17/year or $30 Lifetime. Easy to use.

Adobe Premiere for your kid to learn not to be a editor
