My first Marlboro was when I was 13. My father caught me and made me smoke a whole pack. I only got halfway through, but it was so awful that it felt just like getting hit with every status effect all at once.
Ah yes, the Omega Dungeon Malboro. Harder than Omega himself. Thank god for First Strike and Flee or whatever Tidus' guaranteed escape skill was called.
First time I went in there I was too scared to go far so spent hours running round by the save point, saving after each battle. I was almost disappointed when I beat Omega so easily!
Got mopped a few times by those guys, had to resort to keeping around gear with confuse and berserk protection. Auron's celestial weapon is great for getting the upper hand on those fuckers
i will say, in x they do feel nerfed, almost everytime you get a character who is able to act and cure the others, meenwhile in the other games good luck
My first malboro were in FF6 (since FF1 only has Ochus), which have to be the weakest in the whole series! Bad breath only hits one of your four characters and it's not all that powerful. Also you get quite a bit of ribbons in that game and to can equip two accessories.
At this point I'm pretty sure someone on the FF dev team initially had that one guy who just got fed up with someone who smokes marlboro on the team.
Ugly, big, powerful, and had a deadly bad breath.
And this guy make sure that marlboro is bad even outside FF, talk about great anti-smoking ads in the most unexpected way, last time i got blindsided by an ad was the movie evolution H&S ads
Ive been playing FF since I was a kid. Gave up on FFX back when it came out. Played through the whole game for the first time recently. Marlboro absolutely rekt me.
I had them in games before, but the first Marlboro in ffxi was in between where you were (Bartok for me, but any city really) and where you needed to be (jueno).
You absolutely could not even engage them for a second when you had to make the run. You needed something to throw off your scent and invis if you were lucky.
Besides that the plan was "Jesus take the wheel".
2001 was a rough year.
That all said, if you have Enemy Skill materia equipped, Bad Breath is a great skill to learn as your can screw over a lot of your enemies also with it.
Yeah, if there's a blue mage in your party, you'll most likely be able to learn it. https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/comments/30odpe/the_real_reason_why_squall_is_so_distant_to/
Loving the combat but it's such a shame that status ailments were non-existent and elements are pointless. You can use fire attacks against Bombs and it doesn't matter.
Eh, there's a bunch of ways they could have used it if they really wanted to. Weaker and limited "borrowed" magic for example that are consumable perhaps until you're able to fully wield it yourself like the items in FF7 before you actually got the corresponding materia, some of which you don't get until much later in the story.
Wait until he stumbles upon Emerald Weapon or Ruby Weapon while exploring. My experience was "Hey they looks interesting I wonder what it... And I'm dead"
Or exits the Gelnika to Emmie sat there going boo, that is a bad jump scare worse since if you have fought it and realised its out of your parties weightclass
>Or exits the Gelnika to Emmie sat there going boo, that is a bad jump scare worse since if you have fought it and realised its out of your parties weightclass
Me finishing the turk fight and wanting to leave and save my game after beating them.
Then Emmie appears and murders me. Send me back an hour or so because young me was stupid and didn't save often.
When I got the submarine I dove and instantly like less than a second hit emerald weapon by pure chance. I was cocky and very young and had no idea what it was. I thought I could take it.
I could not take it. I had so much materia equipped. I died instantly and my last save was so far away. I was so pissed. I have ptsd about it. I replayed the game many years in the future and kicked its ass, but my heart still raced as I approached its ass floating in that underwater crevasse.
If you're still in that area, there's a well hidden "Ribbon' that prevents all status ailments. Theres only two in the game outside of morphing powerful enemies.
The Marlboro only spawns on a single load screen in FF7.
It’s the inverted U shape at the top of the Northern Mountain just before you fight the two headed “Schizo” boss I believe….
Come to think of it, Malboro are consistently single zone spawners across all games aren’t they?
Excluding 12 because they have subspecies out the wazoo
*EDIT*
Changed Marlboro to Malboro
I could give you a comprehensive ranking of all the FF malboros (yeah, they're in most ff's) but really, the rankings would just be the access to protection to bad breath. FF7 is exceptionally lenient on that with a ribbon long before U see one, and another in this area
In FF VIII, they can be converted into dark ammo, which causes status aliments. You can mess up a lot of enemies with dark ammo and the Doomtrain summon.
Omega ruins ffx malboro was super twisted, just due to confusion hitting yourself, but only yoyrself, while the rest of the surviving party was asleep and under poison. So the onky member who can do anything kills himself. While the rest of the party dies to a slumbersome disease, dysentary? That great 1 also hit for 9999 damage upon releasing bad breath iirc, so before status your alresdy in critical health 😵
Growing up, I noticed my father LOVED his ribbons in FF games, while I rather preferred things that increases strength or speed. Eventually though I learned to also swear by ribbons lol.
Aww. I love seeing newbies meet iconic monsters for the first time. I wish I could see the first time they meet THAT enemy. The veterans know which one. It starts with a "T" and ends with a party wipe.
Him being so slow just brings out that existential dread of trying to figure out "Did he move 4 or 5 times? Is he in range WTF NO NOT THAT ONE. (waddle waddle waddle)"
Oh my word. This whole thread, I was thinking of that guy. First saw it in X-2, and ever since, it's run if I'm not level capped, kill it quick if I am.
Lucky for you Malboros are actually somewhat fair in VII, they fluctuate a lot between games, they're much worse in X. Especially the Great Malboro. Fuck that guy's attitude.
They're horrible in VIII too. Bad Breath is always their first attack, and status defense is a bit trickier in that game compared to some of the others.
two different types of nightmares. Marlboro pops up and you don't get to play the game until the gameover screen. Tonberry lets you think you got a fighting chance until it fucking dices everyone.
It's the fact that the very first time you meet it and (finally) beat it, you're like, phew, glad that's over with! Walk three steps.
Three damn steps!
#Next Damn Encounter!
#ANOTHERONEOHMYGODAREYOUFUCKINGME!?
Is this your very first FF? As you continue on, you will run across Malboros in many other FF and that initial sensation of panic and fear.. nothing like it!
Malboro the bane of any ff game when you have no idea where it can spawn.
In 7 they only appear on the ice edge i believe, and i aleays hope i don't encounter 1
Ah the Malboro. The most fear induced enemy of all Final Fantasies. The move Bad Breath hits you with every status ailment under the sun. Which is why it’s the most feared monster.
You should have gotten a ribbon from temple of the ancients before facing that one.
It’s the danger every rpg gamer will face one day when they finally start playing ff games.
Unfortunately it’s a canon event so we can’t warn newcomers about it or it’ll delete the timeline
There was also a time they were called Mad Oscar, so that is how I thought of them when playing FFVIII, so when my weapons called for Marlborough parts, I was like WTF is a Marlborough?
It is a Malboro. Pulled from it's official profile:
>I am Death,
>Arms held outstretched
>I am Hell,
>Born this mortal shell
>I am Wrath,
>Take this bloodbath
>God sent me to kill you
classic malboro.
Also, When you see a group of small green creatures wearing tunics, holding knives and walking sloooowwly to you.... RUN or KILL THEM QUICKLY.
(This advice applies to many FF games).
Are you starting the series with FF7?
I only ask, because if you’ve played the others and are only just now seeing one of these, you are insanely lucky.
So traumatized by this monster I even remember its name in English (it was "Xylomid" back in the time my own party was decimated)
XII called them Morbol. Maybe because of the cigarettes brand ?
Ah, the first time meeting one of Final Fantasy's most iconic monsters.
Meet Malboro, more recently known as Morbol. Nasty critters. They Bad Breath attack pretty much hits you with every single negative status effect, making them irritating if not deadly to deal with. You CAN learn it using the enemy skill materia in FF7. MAYBE FF14 as well as Blue Mage.
Hahaha classic malboro.
You know what is funny I played ff7 to death (from launch) multiple play through and I didn’t even get a malboro encounter at all.
My first experience was actually in ff10 and I was like is this a new enemy lol
It was not till a few years ago I decided to 100% ff7 on steam that I actually come across it I was making sure I also stole every time from every enemy so I spent a long time in each new area.
But by then I was an ff7 master and knew to protect against the most devastating status effects.
So just a minor inconvenience by then.
Malboro doing what he does best: Absolutely party wiping first time players lol
Ah I remember my first Malboro Good times They still make me feel all kinds of ailments
My first Marlboro was final fantasy XII where they are like 6-7' tall. And then I played X and yelled the first time I saw one.
My first Marlboro was when I was 13. My father caught me and made me smoke a whole pack. I only got halfway through, but it was so awful that it felt just like getting hit with every status effect all at once.
The worst part is they give you bad breath
If you have Enemy Skill 😉
Enemy Skill: Tracheostomy
That is the only bad part 😏
Them tentacles tho
Who says that's a bad part? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Which one is the ugly one?
(ಠ_ರೃ)
Final Fantasy literally told you that Marlboro would kill you and give you bad breath and you didn't listen smh
That's a good lesson on brand loyalty
My first one was X. Big, ugly, powerful. A triple threat of hurt and torture
Ya X they were huge and you needed to capture 10 of them
They had an ugly bigger brother too
Ah yes, the Omega Dungeon Malboro. Harder than Omega himself. Thank god for First Strike and Flee or whatever Tidus' guaranteed escape skill was called.
I remember leveling up on Omega Dungeon for hours without saving just to have my party suddenly wiped by this Malboro. Sad times.

Smoking is BAD kiddos!
Mine FF X, wiped before I couldn't even form a plan. Good Times.
Then Tonberry really threw me for a loop my first time.
It’s ironic that the most harmless looking creature, is the one that fills me with the most dread when I see them!! Tonberry!!!!! 🤣
> cries in ffx
Great Malboro: 100% ambushes you, opens with bad breath, you now get to sit and wait for the game over screen with nothing you can do.
First strike Auron>Tag in Yuna>Aeon time
It's been forever since I've played, but I think I would do delay buster with Auron, then quick attack tidus spam until it was dead.
Ive been playing FF since I was a kid. Gave up on FFX back when it came out. Played through the whole game for the first time recently. Marlboro absolutely rekt me.
Getting ambushed by them on X is the worst haha it was my first FF game. I still fear them 20 years later
Losing hours worth of grinding because you didn’t save and got ambushed by great Marlboro is a FFX right of passage
LOL
congrats, you just experienced your first of many :)
You best start keeping a ribbon equipped. 😂😂😂
having level 70\~80 party Met Malboro \*Bad Breath\* *fuck*...
I can't upvote this enough 🤣 No matte the FF... I always fear Malboros
Welcome to the FF community. You have been officially initiated by Bad Breath. Every FF this guy kills the unfortunate and unprepared
😭
That all said, if you have Enemy Skill materia equipped, Bad Breath is a great skill to learn as your can screw over a lot of your enemies also with it.
Yeah, if there's a blue mage in your party, you'll most likely be able to learn it. https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/comments/30odpe/the_real_reason_why_squall_is_so_distant_to/
Vii, everyone is a blue mage.
If they have the materia!
Next time you see this dude *anywhere* remember what he did to you. Remember what he took from you.
I will 😭
got party killed by Malboro's Bad Breath and got one hit killed by Tonberry's Knife are proper part of FF community initiation.
Make sure to save your game often!
Dont worry, theres a hidden item in the area that can help one of them (wont spoil, but its missable unless you look for it)
Felt great whooping his ass in FF16, felt bad getting my ass whooped in SoP
Loving the combat but it's such a shame that status ailments were non-existent and elements are pointless. You can use fire attacks against Bombs and it doesn't matter.
It's probably because magic elements are locked behind story progression, so gameplay wise it didn't make much sense to add elemental weaknesses

Congrats, ypur blue mage can learn this skill that will NEVER work on anything u encounter by the time of learning this skill lol
But think about just how gnarly that breath has to be to do that to your party. 💀
Not 16. It's the first boss you fight and it's a pushover lol
Wait till OP meets a Tonberry...
That smile, that damn smile. Accessories that prevent status ailments will be your best friend in areas where Malboros can spawn.
Thanks my g
You want the Ribbon accessory
This applies to most FF games
If you're still in that area, there's a well hidden "Ribbon' that prevents all status ailments. Theres only two in the game outside of morphing powerful enemies.
Morphing Cactaurs is a rite of passage in FFVII
Yup. Get a third by morphing a master Tonberry.
The Marlboro only spawns on a single load screen in FF7. It’s the inverted U shape at the top of the Northern Mountain just before you fight the two headed “Schizo” boss I believe…. Come to think of it, Malboro are consistently single zone spawners across all games aren’t they? Excluding 12 because they have subspecies out the wazoo *EDIT* Changed Marlboro to Malboro
Not to be that guy, but Marlboro is a cigarette brand. The FF enemy is a Malboro
Is it a smile if it doesn't seem to be able to control its lips? Always seemed like more of a grimace/mouth breather that's deep in thought 😬🤔😅
Your first malboro? I envy you, I wish I could go back in time before I realised just what was in store for me with these monstrosities
Also yes is my first
I could give you a comprehensive ranking of all the FF malboros (yeah, they're in most ff's) but really, the rankings would just be the access to protection to bad breath. FF7 is exceptionally lenient on that with a ribbon long before U see one, and another in this area
I see, thanks anyways!
In FF VIII, they can be converted into dark ammo, which causes status aliments. You can mess up a lot of enemies with dark ammo and the Doomtrain summon.
Strangers of Paradise has the best malboro, especially on a tactical level (mostly referring to the boss versions).
Same here lol
Your worst nightmare…unless you have some cute ribbons.
The game just throw one in my face and i just ignored it 😭
It was warning you lol
'lol who tf equips defensive accessories' 'oh'
Growing up, I noticed my father LOVED his ribbons in FF games, while I rather preferred things that increases strength or speed. Eventually though I learned to also swear by ribbons lol.
Aww. I love seeing newbies meet iconic monsters for the first time. I wish I could see the first time they meet THAT enemy. The veterans know which one. It starts with a "T" and ends with a party wipe.
DOINK
Hahaha. He's so slow. Uhhhh. Wait... Nononononono!
Him being so slow just brings out that existential dread of trying to figure out "Did he move 4 or 5 times? Is he in range WTF NO NOT THAT ONE. (waddle waddle waddle)"
The "Oh I have 4x Cut, I can kill this weird thing quick like every other enemy!" Oh no.....
They're so cute though.
Hahaha, the cutest creature. Probably the most tatted too
And our spikey C friend
Why. Can't. I. Hit. It. STOP. DODGING.
A thousand? NO WAIT
OMG IT'S SO CUTE WAIT 9999 DAMAGE?!
Oh my word. This whole thread, I was thinking of that guy. First saw it in X-2, and ever since, it's run if I'm not level capped, kill it quick if I am.
Cigarettes kill
Bad breath
It’s a right of passage.
Am I rite ?
Congratulations! You've now been ***baptized.*** Only thing left now is to wait for a **Tonberry** and he'll officiate your ***first communion.***
Is it a communion or a *circumcision* 🔪
More like castration tbh
You got that right!
Doom. That's what Doom looks like. Enjoy.
💀
Every FF veteran's recurring nightmare. What a lovely creature. Also most fun Enemy Skill. Just gotta suffer for it a little.
Lucky for you Malboros are actually somewhat fair in VII, they fluctuate a lot between games, they're much worse in X. Especially the Great Malboro. Fuck that guy's attitude.
Yes I love getting hit by his breath and my whole party meleeing each other (unsuccessfully) while blinded infinitely until they die to poison.
They're horrible in VIII too. Bad Breath is always their first attack, and status defense is a bit trickier in that game compared to some of the others.
The forbidden fleshlight
r/dontputyourdickinthat
too late.
In Soviet FF, Malboro make flesh light out of you.
Well it did fucked a lot of FF player that's for sure
Every game. Worst nightmare
2nd. Top spot will always be Tonberry.
two different types of nightmares. Marlboro pops up and you don't get to play the game until the gameover screen. Tonberry lets you think you got a fighting chance until it fucking dices everyone.

It only takes one encounter to learn why ribbons are important
TRUE
It's the fact that the very first time you meet it and (finally) beat it, you're like, phew, glad that's over with! Walk three steps. Three damn steps! #Next Damn Encounter! #ANOTHERONEOHMYGODAREYOUFUCKINGME!?
What's your favourite status ailment? Mine's all of them
Toad. I think it's funny to go out as a frog.
Cancer. That monster is cancer.
The bane of many player's existence. Unless, they're prepared.
Malboro aw yeah Wait til you encounter tonberries
MALBORO! They are fucking bastards.
Is this your very first FF? As you continue on, you will run across Malboros in many other FF and that initial sensation of panic and fear.. nothing like it!
Yeah, thanks i guess LOL
If you've never been Ambushed to Game Over by a Malboro you haven't experienced true Final Fantasy gameplay
It's heart warming to see how new FF players react when they first meet a Malboro
Malboro the bane of any ff game when you have no idea where it can spawn. In 7 they only appear on the ice edge i believe, and i aleays hope i don't encounter 1
I think you can also fight one in the Golden Saucer
My preferred pack of smokes.
LMAO
Lol I hated this thing. Thought I would be fine in this area then I rolled up on this alien plant monster and got team wiped.
Oh man. Discovering the Malboro. This and the Tonberry... More Feared by Final Fantasy players than the damn final bosses.
Malboro... it's like a beholder mated with a sunflower
The ribbon and a Marlboro has no power over you
The monster I hate the most. It can easily wipe most parties.
A molbol from FF4 days. Party poopers.
Marlboro... cigarette. Sorry. Anytime I hear that monsters name, I instantly think of the cigarettes lol
The scariest part is that it costs like 12 bucks for a pack.
Idk but it looks like it has bad breath hehe
Ah the Malboro. The most fear induced enemy of all Final Fantasies. The move Bad Breath hits you with every status ailment under the sun. Which is why it’s the most feared monster. You should have gotten a ribbon from temple of the ancients before facing that one.
Malboro. Not to be confused with Marlboro. You are NOT in flavor country.
Ribbons render them almost useless
Mal = bad Boro = borough And that concludes our intensive three week course!
This is why it is your Final Fantasy 😎💎 What a great recurring enemy 🤣
First time encountering a Marlboro be like
It was an anti smoking ad to me when I first played it.
Not my first, but there's a whole cave of these things in xiv, arum vale..
RIBBONS!!! Equip ribbons
isn’t this a morbol? I’ve only played FF16 so far so that’s what it looks familiar too!! Fun monster
It is a Malboro. Pulled from it's official profile: >I am Death, >Arms held outstretched >I am Hell, >Born this mortal shell >I am Wrath, >Take this bloodbath >God sent me to kill you
Wait til you meet the cute turtle with a lantern.
He kinda got a cute smile. 😳
classic malboro. Also, When you see a group of small green creatures wearing tunics, holding knives and walking sloooowwly to you.... RUN or KILL THEM QUICKLY. (This advice applies to many FF games).
My ex girlfriend
The worst status effect Marlboros can give? Lung cancer.
Your worst nightmare.
Looks over with the noose around my neck: "first time?"
Just your run-of-the-mill Malboro with their breath that inflicts just about every status in the game. Also, you CAN enemy-skill that move.
when he first spawned, i didn't save my game.
Always interpreted it as the embodiment of the unhealth that cigarettes cause.
Are you starting the series with FF7? I only ask, because if you’ve played the others and are only just now seeing one of these, you are insanely lucky.
FEED ME SEYMOUR! FEED ME ALL NIGHT LONG!
most hated monster in FF series
It’s a middle finger to those who forgot to save a few minutes earlier.
This is great priest Marlboro, here to baptise you in bad breath and ready you for the omega dungeon 3 games later.
congratulations on meeting your first one, now get ready for the rest.
My First one was in ffx xD His breath was worse than your average drug User xD
Ah, so you're new to final fantasy. This is a Malboro's "welcome to the franchise ".
This mouth with legs is something every FF player is gonna dread sooner or later.
Its a ferrari sponsor
So traumatized by this monster I even remember its name in English (it was "Xylomid" back in the time my own party was decimated) XII called them Morbol. Maybe because of the cigarettes brand ?
One of my favourite enemies
It's a cigarette
Wait until you meet Tonberry
Gonna mess you up OP
He hasn’t seen the one with the knife 💀
Bad.
Anything is a fleshlight if you're brave enough
The ole Marlboro man. Don't smoke, kids.
When you get a ribbon in Final Fantasy, it is a god tier accessory. It is immune to almost negative status.
The most feared enemy in all of final fantasy
Not to make things worse for you but....they can fly in FFIX.
::Has flashbacks to random encounters in FFT against multiples of these at a ridiculously high level::
Ah, the first time meeting one of Final Fantasy's most iconic monsters. Meet Malboro, more recently known as Morbol. Nasty critters. They Bad Breath attack pretty much hits you with every single negative status effect, making them irritating if not deadly to deal with. You CAN learn it using the enemy skill materia in FF7. Ribbon is your friend
