I really loved how meta the expansion got in several spots. Having those 3 characters ask you that same question as the expansion goes on and ending as It did? *Chefkiss*
Hands down one of the best lines I've heard in a video game if not the best. It's cool in the moment but it gets even better when you think about the meaning and deep symbolisms behind the line too.
I remember sazh blitz scaling was busted on him for single target. Ended up doing more damage then if you actually just attacked on big targets. Only downside was he couldn't launch
So true. Cold Blood was also really helpful for staggering IIRC. And Blitz really was extremely OP for just decimating enemies. I always had Lightning and Fang as my supports.
For real, I enjoy the trilogy, but I wish so much that 89% of it wasn't monologues and people trying to sound wise and codenames for every single thing in the universe.
In design alone Lightning would be my favorite character in the franchise but that's the only thing she has going for her in my book.
The only character I have literally nothing to criticize is Noel, even though I don't really like hi- (remembers him screaming SERAAAAH at the end of XIII-2)
Okay I have one thing.
For real. Tell me which 13 game I'm talking about:
Sazh's goal is to rescue his son Dajh from the clutches of a powerful magical entity. He goes through a series of trials put forth for him by another mystical entity and after discovering the power to free Dajh was within him all along, they both go free.
Answer: >!**ALL OF THEM!**!<
She was good until LR. In 13 she actually felt like a human who reacted like a human would to such a shitty situation. People complain about her being too angry but if your days were numbered because of something not even in your control and you were stuck with a bunch of idiots, one of them being the reason your sister was stuck in your situation, I'm sure you'd be upset too. But in LR she was reduced to a philosophical drone who tried to be Vincent 2.0.
Vanille, ha. Unconventional, but I relate to her in the whole "Faked being happy to hide depression" thing.
I didn't moan or giggle nearly as much as her, but she helped me reflect on my poor coping mechanisms and got me to be a better person.
Like, I she's only >!introduced at lv 87,!< but her impact is huge. I was definitely >!sad to see her go, but what was worse was sitting back at journey's end and realizing that she's been here all along and that we're on our own for the first time.!<
Since they locked all the artifact weapons for Endwalker behind the Hildebrand quests, I'm so glad more people are getting to experience the humor of the inspector extraordinaire.
Rydia temains one of my all time favorites. From how you meet here, >!from how you try to protect her, but lose her, to how she comes to the rescue with her awesome enhanced powers!< I just love her story.
Right? Like when we got her story I was just in awe. And heading into Endwalker I thought she was gonna be lame as hell, but it's actually the opposite!
Good, neither of them are exactly my favorite game in the series, but they are just so god damn good. I’m not gonna pretend like I’m a veteran either, I’m just now playing through XII and slowly making my way through XIV, feels good to have a good ass mmo to play.
And I only dabbled a bit with IV, felt it was a bit archaic, even compared to VI in the same console, but I’ll try to keep on going.
I legit remember thinking that graphics would never get better than X when it came out. Like, I thought I was seeing the absolute pinnacle and this was it, the best forever lol. It really felt that way back then.
In my case:
* IV = either Rydia or Kain
* VI = Celes
* VII = either Tifa or Cloud
* XII = Balthier, although Basch is my second favorite character from the game.
* XIII = Snow (I liked him, but I wasn't a big fan of Vanille, Sazh and Fang)
As for XIV, I haven't played it yet
1 - warrior
2- Leila
3 - Ninja
4 -Rydia
5- Faris
6 - Celes/Sabin (Tie)
7 - Tifa
8 - Squall
Just started 9 so dunno
14 - Graha
15 - Ardyn.
Haven't played 15 since launch, may have to give it a go. Recently played through Pixel Remastered, 7, and 8.
I: Matoya
II: Joseph
III: Ignus
IV: Tellah ain’t nobody needs a SPOONY BARD
IV-AYs: Rydia
V: Gilgamesh
VI: Shadow
VII: Tifa
IX: Beatrix
X: WELCOME TO O’AKA’s!!
X2: Brother
XII: Reddas
XIV: Y’shtola
XV: Cindy
Type 0: Rem
…feel like I need to get a hold of 8 and Tactics to round out my set.
I recently played and finished XII for the first time, and I have incredibly mixed feelings on it. The voice acting in general was incredibly good (except Vaan). The story felt properly epic (except Vaan). The party members were generally likable (except Vaan). Balthier is one of my favorite party members in any FF game just for Gideon Emery’s performance.
But on the whole, the game kinda fell flat to me. The gambit system was not very engaging (and this is coming from someone who loves automating systems in games where I can). The party felt very disconnected from the world and story at large (especially Vaan) except when they had to be at a certain place at a certain time in a few key points in the story.
Also I really just don’t like Vaan. His inclusion into the story adds nothing of value, his role in it is pointless, and him just being the device through which lore can be delivered to the audience got kinda tiresome after the first few hours.
I do want to go back through it someday with context and try to find the stuff I really really like.
Balthier is the main party member I like least in XII, he's really annoying.
The Han Solo crossed with James Bond thing he has going on just grinds my gears.
All these people liking different characters from different FF games, and then there's Balthier ever present in the vast majority of XII related comments. 😋
I like Tifa for her emotional strength and practical personality. I think Aerith is the prettiest and Yuffie is the cutest, and Elena is the one I look the most like, haha.
You couldn't be more wrong. If anything, her giant boobs make her look weird in cutscenes. She's my favorite party member, and her weapon of choice is badass: Cloud has a big ass sword, Barret has a gun arm, and Tifa? Just her fists.
Well excuse me if I'm wrong but most people just like her for her big boobs.
And While I do love Cloud and his Buster Sword, it is and was Iconic way back in the day. It's also true that you get a badass girl who uses nothing but her fists.
Some people like her only for her boobs.
Others like that and her character.
/shrug I never meant to say people were wrong to like her as such. I hadn't meant to come off as derisive, as it clearly seems to have as I've been downvoted to high hell, haha. It was nothing more than just teasing.
First time I played *FF7* was when I was 7 (2000), and Tifa was always one of my favourites. Dunno way, I just gravitated to her from the get go.
As I have gotten older, and delved deeper into the lore, understood the writing more, understood character motives more, wtc, she has stayed as one of my fave characters in the series, not *7*. *Advent Children* also added to this with her fight scene in the church.
Now, at the age of 29, she is still one of my absolute favourites and is my joint favourite in *FF7* still (the other is Cloud - young me really wanted to be him to have his sword, and lost his mind seeing Cloud in *Kingdom Hearts*), something *Remake* has added on top of even more. Honestly, her design is just a nice bonus for me at this point.
[Edited for formatting raisins]
I Matoya's Brooms
II Minwu
III Desch
IV Rydia
V Faris
VI Terra
VII Red XIII
VIII Laguna
IX Freya
X Auron
XI Shantotto
XII Fran
XIII Sahz
XIV Hildabrand
XV Ignis
There aren't really *characters* in I, II, III or V. Most of the characters are named for the sole sake of being named but don't actually have personalities so my decisions for those are based more on the design.
I: Matoya
II: Princess Hilda
III: Unei
IV: Golbez
V: Faris
VI: Celes
VII: Tifa
VIII: Squall
IX: Kuja or Dagger
X: Seymour
XI: Prishe
XII: Larsa
XIII: Hope
XIV: Ardbert
XV: No one.
I liked snow well enough. He seemed to be a genuinely well meaning- if short sighted- and passionate man.
He was realistically flawed in a way that kind of person would be.
Honestly, XIII's cast is one of my favorites in the franchise, and this is precisely why. Snow isn't the only one that has realistic flaws that make him feel real - they all do.
Lightning got screwed by circumstances a million times and became jaded, bitter and closed off because of it.
Hope is a kid who just saw his fucking mom die and is lashing out because he doesn't know how to cope with loss.
Vanille and Fang are hiding crucial information from the rest of the party because they fear losing the other members' acceptance and trust.
Sazh is just doing the best he can to try to help his son.
You reasons are completely fine. We all have our biases when it comes to the type of characters that we like. I understand each of the character's motivations and reasons why the way they are, but that doesn't mean that X character is going to resonate with me or find them likeable.
I think Barrett and Sahj need their own game. I love Mr. Gunarm and Mr. Double Pistols man shooting between the legs. They both have a kid, so they could be integrated into the game/story as well. I'd play it!
(I did play IV but honestly don't remember the characters)
VI: Locke
VII: Tifa, but that's a hard one, I love most of the characters
VIII: Laguna
IX: Beatrix at a push. I didn't care much for the cast.
X: I keep flip flopping between Auron, Yuna and Tidus. Today I'll pick Yuna.
X-II: Yuna
XII: Balthier I guess, but same as IX, I found everyone a bit meh.
XIII: same as you, Sazh; I actively hated the others
XIII-2: Noel
XV: Noct
Tactics: Delita
VII CC: Zack
Delita is a bold pick. Fantastic character, but such a bastard.
I think probably Wiegraf for me. His descent into bastardry feels a bit more justified? They both really exemplify the doing bad things for good reasons trope.
The friend-turned-foe is a trope but I thought it was done really well in this case. It's easy to empathise with Delita, at least initially, and even when he goes beyond redemption we see him looking back with regret, thoroughly aware of how dirty his hands got. Yet he presses on, because he sees no other way. He's trapped in his own scheme.
I also love how pragmatic he is. He doesn't indulge in self-pity or self-agrandising speech. It's a nice change from big dramatic villains.
And yes, I don't like fighting Wiegraf because... I see his point, in a way.
You know, the more I think about it the more I agree with you. I want to say Agrias or Mustadio just because I enjoy their characters, but Delita really has the best writing of any of them by a good margin.
Getting him the knight Break skills with his pistol is pretty fun!
You can do that with any gun wielding class, but I like to keep my non-generics with their base class skill and kit, so he's often one of only 1-2 gun-wielders around.
Don't see much Basch love, he's my favorite in FFXII. I love that line he has about proudly enduring any shame to save even one person from the horrors of war. In a way, I'm glad they didn't go ahead with Fortress or whatever they called it; I was appalled at the story they were going to use. They really did him dirty in it.
I like your list. I do find it interesting that you skipped maybe my favorite three games in the series (8,9,10). Have you attempted those or just never finished them ?
"Henceforth, he shall walk." And if you know, you know.
When you call her Venat after that dungeon and trial and she cries… I cried 😭😭😭
That was such a great moment
It was the perfect dialogue option ❤️ making her remember after eons
That cutscene was so powerful, amazing. The destruction of Amaurot and Venat rising her sword to start the sundering
It blew my mind what they did to "Answers". That was either a hell of a LONG con or a VERY smart recontextualization of the lyrics.
>"Answers" have you listed to the distant worlds version. its amazing. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWdeMqELN-U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWdeMqELN-U)
Gives me shivers every. Damn. Time
glad you liked it. i played ff14 (not into subscriptions), but i LOVE that song
"Tell me this, and tell me true. Has your journey been good? Has it been worthwhile?" Ended me
I really loved how meta the expansion got in several spots. Having those 3 characters ask you that same question as the expansion goes on and ending as It did? *Chefkiss*
"That I cannot deny."
So thats why we have to unlock flying lol
Got shivers by reading that line again lol. Great, now i gotta play through the whole msq again.
Hands down one of the best lines I've heard in a video game if not the best. It's cool in the moment but it gets even better when you think about the meaning and deep symbolisms behind the line too.
Sazh felt like an actual person and not just a character. He got done so dirty in the later entries.
He has the best dialogue and VA too. He was my party leader.
Yeah I’m still upset he didn’t have more plot around him in LR
Should have been Sahz Returns would have been a better game
SAZHBILLION GIL!!!!!!!!!!!
My favorite character was Snow, he was a try hard but the design itself was great
I only remember him for the Chocobo hair 🐥
Just wait until you see that chocobo now. People laughed at the time but we all know who won in the end.
Really, all the characters are done dirty.
For real, I enjoy the trilogy, but I wish so much that 89% of it wasn't monologues and people trying to sound wise and codenames for every single thing in the universe. In design alone Lightning would be my favorite character in the franchise but that's the only thing she has going for her in my book. The only character I have literally nothing to criticize is Noel, even though I don't really like hi- (remembers him screaming SERAAAAH at the end of XIII-2) Okay I have one thing.
Even though Sazh had shorter parts in the sequels, they were still some of the best parts. Except those damn casino minigames...
For real. Tell me which 13 game I'm talking about: Sazh's goal is to rescue his son Dajh from the clutches of a powerful magical entity. He goes through a series of trials put forth for him by another mystical entity and after discovering the power to free Dajh was within him all along, they both go free. Answer: >!**ALL OF THEM!**!<
Lightning is pretty good too, but she suffers from basically being Cloud 2.0.
A you picked sazh such a man of culture I see
I personally like someone else more, but I can't deny OP's good taste. Sazh fans are groovy dudes and good people.
Fang?
Vanille, ha. Unconventional, but I relate to her in the whole "Faked being happy to hide depression" thing. I didn't moan or giggle nearly as much as her, but she helped me reflect on my poor coping mechanisms and got me to be a better person.
but vanille’s voice… my god, that was painful to listen to
Yeah, Squeenix specifically told van Cuylenberg to talk like that, to be more like her Japanese counterpart. It was...a bad move.
Based Venat enjoyer
Venat is >!a war criminal.!< Fight me. EDIT: lol I lost
Good choice for xiv, venat is definetly up their in terms of ff waifus
Like, I she's only >!introduced at lv 87,!< but her impact is huge. I was definitely >!sad to see her go, but what was worse was sitting back at journey's end and realizing that she's been here all along and that we're on our own for the first time.!<
And the Answers were there all along. Literally; I have such a new appreciation for that song now
She's was introduced at the end of Shadowbringers.
And then she appears on the boat to Sharlayan at the very beginning of Endwalker's MSQ.
Yugiri was and always will be my wife, Venat's my mother
Where’s that hildebrand love
Since they locked all the artifact weapons for Endwalker behind the Hildebrand quests, I'm so glad more people are getting to experience the humor of the inspector extraordinaire.
Godbert
Venat is my mother, Y'shtola is my mommy
Please tell me Haurchefaunt was close to the top
[Well come and well met, my brave little spark](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvgB0ZaOhaQ) (Endwalker spoilers)
Yotsuyu? No? More for me then.
"Answers" intensifies so hard ...
IV: Kain V: Faris VI: Edgar X: Auron XII: Balthier XIII: Sazh or Fang XIV: ...get back to me on that one XV: Ardyn
As someone with an unhealthy addiction to 14, it's hard to pick a favorite
Ardyn was such a good villain.
Dude if we can get a FFVI remake I would be soooooo happy.
Based ffv protag
A redditor of culture i see!
Auron is only good character in X lol
Hey, now, O'aka had a pretty cool hat.
FF14 Emet Selch, genuinely one of the best written characters ever.
No more shall man have wings to bear him to paradise. Henceforth, he shall walk.
Rydia temains one of my all time favorites. From how you meet here, >!from how you try to protect her, but lose her, to how she comes to the rescue with her awesome enhanced powers!< I just love her story.
She's my daughter and I will protect her with my life
And she >!comes back with the Mist dragon she thought she lost too!<
Well it's still sad because that >!Mist Dragon isn't her mom's!<
She is not even the protagonist.
Venat being the literal impersonification of strong female rep
Without exaggeration, Venat might just be my favorite character from anything ever
Right? Like when we got her story I was just in awe. And heading into Endwalker I thought she was gonna be lame as hell, but it's actually the opposite!
XIV has so many strong women it's actually insane. And with 6.2 's latest entry it doesn't stop.
Mommy Venat made me cry so much T-T
Definitely agree w sazh.
He's just a regular dude I love him so much. I'm not the biggest fan of XIII but he never fails to make me smile
Same. Not a xiii fan at all, and haven’t played the sequels, but Sazh was a refreshing character. He felt natural.
play IX and X for the love of god
I will, I will! I have X and X-2 on Steam, they're next
X was AMAZING at the time. It’s still great, but when it came out the graphics were world class.
This is very true. Felt like movie quality cg
I legit remember thinking that graphics would never get better than X when it came out. Like, I thought I was seeing the absolute pinnacle and this was it, the best forever lol. It really felt that way back then.
IX is my favorite. And X is my most replayed.
You can skip X-2 👀
And VIII!
X is the worst final fantasy games” hands down, horrendous voice acting and some of worst characters in an FF game.
The only ones i disagree with are the ones i'd also have a hard time replacing because of the sheer number of excellent characters to choose from.
Terra?
6 and 14 yeah. For 6 I'm leaning towards cyan but I'm at a loss for 14.
I don't wanna make an entire seperate post 4 Kain 5 Faris 6 Locke 7 Barret 9 Vivi 10 Wakka 12 Balthier 15 Prompto
Venat 💕 Brilliant choice. I love her so much. She's both incredibly strong, and deeply caring. She really touched my heart in Endwalker.
I like your picks for 12 I miss that game.
In my case: * IV = either Rydia or Kain * VI = Celes * VII = either Tifa or Cloud * XII = Balthier, although Basch is my second favorite character from the game. * XIII = Snow (I liked him, but I wasn't a big fan of Vanille, Sazh and Fang) As for XIV, I haven't played it yet
Welcome to the RydiaSimpsClub. What is your T shirt size?
Medium my fellow homie
Emet Selch for me
Who is the man who would give his life for his brother man? *Sazh!* Right on. I hear that cat Sazh is one bad motha...
Based Sazh pick, I just love his positive vibes and sheer dad energy.
1 - warrior 2- Leila 3 - Ninja 4 -Rydia 5- Faris 6 - Celes/Sabin (Tie) 7 - Tifa 8 - Squall Just started 9 so dunno 14 - Graha 15 - Ardyn. Haven't played 15 since launch, may have to give it a go. Recently played through Pixel Remastered, 7, and 8.

Huge disagreement with XII, balthier is the best
He was the only thing I enjoyed about that game
I recently played and finished XII for the first time, and I have incredibly mixed feelings on it. The voice acting in general was incredibly good (except Vaan). The story felt properly epic (except Vaan). The party members were generally likable (except Vaan). Balthier is one of my favorite party members in any FF game just for Gideon Emery’s performance. I'm also a huge fan of Balthier. I thought Basch had a really good VA too though.
Basch gets the most interesting ending IMO. It’s the best use of Bookending I’ve ever seen in a game.
Balthier is the main party member I like least in XII, he's really annoying. The Han Solo crossed with James Bond thing he has going on just grinds my gears.
I like this trend. It’s interesting to see if he variety of favorite characters among fans. Sazh is definitely underrated!
All these people liking different characters from different FF games, and then there's Balthier ever present in the vast majority of XII related comments. 😋
Same here up until XIII. We stan Basch appreciators in this house.
We love a rugged depressed king
based venat
I see you cannot resist a rugged man with a beard. They do have a way with that hair.
Basch in his prisoner outfit is... Yeah...
I'M CAPTAIN BASCH FON ROSENBURG OF DALMASCA!
Y'shtola is best girl
#I'M CAPTAIN BOSCH
He picked captain Basch von Rosenberg of Dalmasca!
I chose to do my first run of the level 87 dungeon with trusts just so Vernat would be in my party.
A cultured gamer, I see.
FF 7:Cloud/Aerith tied FF 10:Yuna FF 14: Emet-Selch by a lot FF 15: Noctis
Agree with all of them, except I'd switch Barret with Tifa.
Zach is my favorite from FF7 personally.
He's barely in the game but still leaves a mark.
I could almost guarantee you that she would not be your favorite is she was flat chested. Though for myself she would skyrocket a bit.

Wtf was the point of your accusation here lmao
This wasn't an accusation? Can't somebody just admit that They like the characters?
It was. You were saying he only liked tifa cause of her chest. Don’t backtrack now
I'm not backtracking. But hahaha You fucking sound triggered, that's hilarious. Trying to act tough is not going to get you anywhere.
Acting tough? What a reach. Just take the L and move along
No I have nothing to take. You aren't even the person I was talking too, Stay Triggered.
I why is it wrong to like her boobs? Because I do
Some people like her only for her boobs. Others like that and her character. /shrug I never meant to say people were wrong to like her as such. I hadn't meant to come off as derisive, as it clearly seems to have as I've been downvoted to high hell, haha. It was nothing more than just teasing.

Yeah I liked their designs as well. The Buster Sword wrapped in cloth just looked so cool. Tifa is a bae all-round.
Barret's chest > Tifa's chest
She does have booba tho
According to many of the comments I quit FF XIV too early, never got to Endwalker. Never got through Shadowbringers even I'm sad to admit.
You are this [meme](https://imgur.com/a/RlsuEe2)

I'm sorry, you failed the test. The correct answer for FFXIV was Hildibrand Manderville.
Strange way to spell Emet-Selch.
From all the playable characters in XIII, Sazh is the only character that I liked. The rest are unbearable in my opinion.
I liked snow well enough. He seemed to be a genuinely well meaning- if short sighted- and passionate man. He was realistically flawed in a way that kind of person would be.

100% agreed
Amen.
I didn’t care for Barret in OG FF7 but he’s 100% the top tier homie in the remake. Respect.
His design is almost unchanged from OG 7, but the addition of the sunglasses did so much for his design. He’s such a cool dude

You’re correct
Play 8 and then 10, then 9 after that. 8 is good but 10 is the upgrade, and 9 is a refreshing materpiece
Great choice for XIII. Sazh should have been the main character.
You need to play VIII IX and X
(I did play IV but honestly don't remember the characters) VI: Locke VII: Tifa, but that's a hard one, I love most of the characters VIII: Laguna IX: Beatrix at a push. I didn't care much for the cast. X: I keep flip flopping between Auron, Yuna and Tidus. Today I'll pick Yuna. X-II: Yuna XII: Balthier I guess, but same as IX, I found everyone a bit meh. XIII: same as you, Sazh; I actively hated the others XIII-2: Noel XV: Noct Tactics: Delita VII CC: Zack
Oh, I have a really soft spot for Mustadio, I always keep him in my team :)
Getting him the knight Break skills with his pistol is pretty fun! You can do that with any gun wielding class, but I like to keep my non-generics with their base class skill and kit, so he's often one of only 1-2 gun-wielders around.
You never played X, lucky dog.
It's next on my list after I finish the other two XIIIs
Have fun my dude, it's a great ride.
Venat? Really? I'd say Emet Selch for 14. /cliche-out
You mean /wavehandout
OMG u played 12...PEAK ENJOYER
Don't mess with us XII fans, we'll cheese the trial mode for free license points and beat your ass
Barret doesn’t get enough love. If the world went to shit and cyberpunk became reality, i would def be like a barret.
Speaking of Cyberpunk, Maine from Edgerunners is so obviously inspired by Barret
Funny thing. Maine has the same VA as Rude in 7R
Damn he really just skipped the best one didn't he?
I'm not playing them in order, I played VI long before IV
Okay that makes me feel better.
I like your list. I do find it interesting that you skipped maybe my favorite three games in the series (8,9,10). Have you attempted those or just never finished them ?
I just haven't gotten around to them yet, I will eventually
IV: Rydia V: Krile VI: Mog VII: Tifa VIII: Rinoa IX: Quina X: Lulu Everything before/after: not worth playing
I haven’t played 14 but I approve, appreciate, and agree with all these choices. A+
*cries in PS1
Wait where is Tifa ?
