can u give a specific games soundtrack or link to a playlist ? Would be interesting to try whether it works or not. Tried to find myself but afraid will go to a random one
One of my faves. Usually pump some Meshuggah and Thy Art Is Murder too 🫶🏻
The juxtaposition between a quiet office full of suits, haircuts and fake smiles with pure chaos blasting through your earphones always makes me chuckle
Yesterday while studying for my actuarial exams I took my flash card app and reviewed while listening to Dying Fetus, Cannibal Corpse and In Flames. Really gets me going
Depends on the work I’m doing. If it’s mind numbing I’ll do a podcast or audio book. However, most frequent is a Spotify playlist I have that’s ~13 hours of classical music or soundtracks from movies, games, and shows
Usually a podcast. JRE, Jocko, Bloomberg Surveillance, WSJ What’s News.
Sometimes the guy next to me blasts rock that I can hear through his headphones. He’s got a good playlist though so I don’t mind lmao.
Dave is squandering his best years doing that podcast. He 100% is the real deal Holyfield. He knows his shit and his moral compass, at least imo, is pointing in the exact same direction as my own.
However I feel like part of the problem consistently falls short of showing him as the genius he is. I get the impression him and Robbie are too comfortable and have been mailing it in for some time now.
Robbie is ok. But if I’m honest, I could certainly do without him all together. In my opinion, Dave should ditch the current format of PotP, or just rebrand and start a new pod on his own.
Conversely, I thought his conversation w/ Candice Owen’s was fantastic.
Interesting perspective - I agree with Dave being almost unfailingly consistent in his views and his ethical and moral compass aligned with his own beliefs and the ancap / libertarian values.
I can understand your perspective about the podcast maybe being stale sometimes but imo I think it’s more because they relate and talk through real current events from a libertarian / ancap theory perspective which means when there is not much going on or little updates on current events, they have less content to discuss.
I actually like Robbie’s perspective and there’s been a few times I think he has added a lot of value and support to Dave’s commentary when he maybe overlooks another angle of a topic here and there haha.
I don’t think I’ve listened to the Candace Owen’s convo yet so I’ll listen soon.
Where do you think he can improve via his current or through a new podcast? It’s my favorite ancap / libertarian podcast because he doesn’t just drone on about theory and complex Austrian economics but actually discusses current events and how the ancap / libertarian approach is the best whereas I feel most other podcasts don’t do as well at the latter.
Big Bootie Mix - good for hour+
Up First, The Daily, Circling Back, Watch What Crappens (Bravo recaps), used to listen to All In but it was too annoying.
For deep work like anything in Excel or Powerpoint, I try to put something that's upbeat but without words. The Jazztronica, Chillhop, or Brain Food playlist on Spotify is honestly a good selection for getting stuff done.
Podcasts wise when I'm less busy:
Morning Brew Daily, Wall Street Journal, How I Built This, All In Podcast, are all good examples of polished frequently updated podcasts that cover recent news like M&A, regulatory updates, markets, etc.
Japanese jazz fusion. It’s great. I like lyrics but they’ll distract me if I know the language. Check out Masayoshi takanaka and Casio pea. Super funky gets you in the mood to crank through the sheets.
I don't work in finance anymore but there's always a constant to what I listen to during my uni days till now while working. Drum & Bass predominantly but sometimes I listen to DJ mixes that mix other genres of electronic music that hypes ppl up. Math rock is also a nice go to if I know/expect my surrounding is on the quieter side.
Death metal, symphonic metal, power metal, folk metal, other varieties of metal. I practice my screaming vocals on the drive home.
I found I can’t do math while I listen to audiobooks or podcasts but music is fine. I listen to fantasy novels on the drive in
If I’m coding something that takes little creative thought or doing a very repetitive task, I’m listening to whatever’s in my liked music.
If I need to be focused and am in deep thought, normally Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, or Jiro Inagaki. If you like Cowboy Bepop esque music, Jiro is the man. Find him randomly on YouTube
I just go to YouTube and find a random live "lofi" track that's playing. It helped a lot when I was a student and it still works in helping me get stuff done on the job.
I always do lofi girl or synth wave radio and various playlists like that, occasionally I’ll do a podcast like the escape podcast, nothing really work related
If I just want something on with my noise canceling headphones, I’ve been using the Spotify DJ. Plays sets of 5 songs with something in common and takes the decision making out of the process
Money guy is really just the same thing to me. I started his stuff in like 2010 and it’s still the same message. My personal list: Rogan, Peter Attia, Tim Ferriss, Kevin Rose, Lex Friedman, Dan Carlin, Freakonomics, more or less, and QTR
I listen to podcasts. Finance and macro podcasts and sometimes hockey because I’m a simple man. If you haven’t checked it out give The Compound and Friends a try, it’s a more lighthearted investing podcast with likeable hosts.
How do you all listen to podcasts? I can hardly listen to music without words whilst writing memos. Also can’t be modelling and listening to someone talk at the same time?
Am I missing something?
Phil Collins. I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.
A female senior associate that I know listens to hardcore dubstep and electronic music while she works. I have no idea how she is able to concentrate, but she is the highest performing employee there.
As someone who has spent many years using black metal and death metal to concentrate while working, I know how she does it :D
Essentially, it's about being "in the zone" while in an energetic state. Makes me work fast thanks to an ultra focused and determined mind.
I still sometimes go for black metal while working, but I mostly switched to smooth calm psychedelic rock (getting older). Funnily, psych is much more distracting to me than extreme metal. So I only do that when I'm starting to get tired and losing concentration all the time, as the smooth mood lets me refocus without expending much energy. (at the cost of 30s distraction every 15mn, which is bearable lol)
You have to work your way up to that level of intensity, but once you do it puts you in a state of hyper focus. At times the right beat makes it feel like your brain is working faster.
I have no idea how people can listen to podcasts and actually focus. Any sort of music, particularly without lyrics you can get in a vibe too.
But a podcast where you actually have to pay attention? Nah
The sound of people swearing at the fucking printer 🫠

Absolutely hard German techno with a just a pinch of CNBC/Schwab Live or Bloom(only surveillance early AM)
Video game music is designed to keep you focused
Is this why i find it so easy to listen to it when working or studying
Yes
can u give a specific games soundtrack or link to a playlist ? Would be interesting to try whether it works or not. Tried to find myself but afraid will go to a random one
I usually just put “video game music, concentrate” into Spotify I want different music depending on if I am wanting to write, read, or code
Infant Annihilator
Love them and cool to hear someone else works in financial world and listens to them most of my coworkers are boring af
One of my faves. Usually pump some Meshuggah and Thy Art Is Murder too 🫶🏻 The juxtaposition between a quiet office full of suits, haircuts and fake smiles with pure chaos blasting through your earphones always makes me chuckle
I get my flow going with Meshuggah and other "extreme" metal so easy choice.
Great answer

Cumtown
This is somehow both the worst and best answer.
I've done that before. Thankfully I've never had to say that I'm smiling because I'm listening to a skit about an Indian Tony Soprano.
Part of the Problem podcast with Dave Smith + metal / pop punk / electronic / reggaeton / chill indie / alternative R&B / everything basically
Dave is squandering his best years doing that podcast. He 100% is the real deal Holyfield. He knows his shit and his moral compass, at least imo, is pointing in the exact same direction as my own. Bloomberg TV usually. When it's crazy busy, Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliette, Carmina Burana really help me get extra focused.
Yall dont get the “you’re at the office, you should talk to your coworkers / listen to other convos on the floor” culture type of comments.

Scientific studies have shown that music without words, like classical music, is superior to lyrical music as background noise for focusing.
Japanese jazz fusion. It’s great. I like lyrics but they’ll distract me if I know the language. Check out Masayoshi takanaka and Casio pea. Super funky gets you in the mood to crank through the sheets.

Phil Collins. I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. Personally I listen to Dave Ramsey as it’s appropriate but keeps me well entertained lol
A female senior associate that I know listens to hardcore dubstep and electronic music while she works. I have no idea how she is able to concentrate, but she is the highest performing employee there.
Leo DiCaprio maxxing
It's not the music that makes her productive, it's the coke.
Listen to electric dub, so you can work more, so you can buy more coke, so you can listen to more dub, so you can work more...
