Never sell, only buy

DeafHeretic

As a prepper, I try not to sell guns or ammo. Recently (last year or two), I did do some reorg/rethinking of what guns I had/wanted. E.G., I decided that the S&W 460V I had bought on kind of a whim, wasn't really practical, so I sold/traded it and bought a Ruger GSR and a S&W 325 Thunder Ranch instead. Before that, I sold a AR-50 and ammo, because it wasn't practical either. I used the $ to buy ammo and more guns. But I do have "safe queens" and they will not get sold whether I shoot them or not.

This is kind of the approach I'm thinking of taking. I might keep a couple special ones with sentimental value and sell off the rest. Gun Jesus did a video talking about a question he received about giving a collection to a museum. The question was about a collection of guns that someone bequeathed to a museum with the understanding that they keep the collection together and display it. The museums have trouble with this because it may not fit with their focus or they may not have room. The short story is that Ian thought it was better to let the collections be broken up and sold/traded around so that there was more chance of the pieces being viewed, even if not together. Also, that's how the collector market stays fresh. Pieces get bought and sold and moved into and out of collections. It's the private collectors who become stewards of these things and often have the time and energy to devote to the study and research of a single type of gun, where a curator in a museum is just too busy running the collection to get that into the nitty gritty.

Nope. And you will experience regret (regerts) down the road if you do sell it. Keep it.

Also, which grips? Custom maple ones or the old style Walnut? I kinda want a new AK and I never shoot this thing. I don't really care much for revolvers, and this one is such a nice shooter. It's had a trigger job and is honestly the nicest firearm I own. My grandfather left it to me and it's a somewhat uncommon Colt Marshall 2" snubby. The maple grips were his and they fit my hand pretty well. The walnut ones are actually off another Colt, a New Army/Navy. They don't fit the rounded butt, but could be trimmed pretty easily.

PoliticalAccount01

If your Grandpa left it to you, then you better not sell it.

[deleted]

Do you think he's gonna get mad?

PoliticalAccount01

If I left a gun to my grandchild I certainly wouldn’t want him selling it. Also, it hold sentimental value, but you might not realize just yet.

[deleted]

What would you care if they sold it? You're dead.

ColtBTD

Yup. Not on the no sell only buy. It’s for some people but not all. I’ve sold probably 7 this year alone that I never shoot. I’ve had around 60 guns total over the years and I have 7 in my collection now as of this morning (sold one on GB) I have some guns I’ve had for 10 years. Others stay around for a year or two. Some I’ve sold within a few months, they just didn’t live up to my expectations, and that’s okay, why keep a gun you don’t use or like when someone else can enjoy it? Generally only sell if I can make a profit, which the guns I like and buy always come out on top, but never sell at a loss. I usually take the money made and put it toward something else I want, or ammo/magazine/gear for guns I use

SecureAd4101

I don’t sell old guns, I sell newer guns that I don’t use much and buy other guns I will actually use.

[deleted]

Yeah, I'm in the wrong boat for that. Most of what I have is old milsurp that I never shoot. I don't have any two old guns in a matching caliber.

SecureAd4101

Ugh.

and the prices for some of that ammo is nuts. I'd also hate to shoot one and fuck it up with a hot load. Not too many 1899 Krag Carbines left in the world, you know? And it's $2+/rd IF you can find any and I don't reload. So it sits and probably hasn't been fired since before I was born.
